This week we wrap up our month of 1950s Atomic and/or Space Monster movies with a couple of "classics:" Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) and The Giant Claw (1957). We had a lot of fun with these two so join us we discuss questionable 50's science and questionable 50's special effects. We also choose our surprise theme for next month via lottery. Tune in to see what we are covering next month as well as details of the ongoing MRAC giveaway. contact us at: mracfilmclub@gmail.com
The fun continues this week as we cover The Blob (1958). This one falls into the space monster sub-genre, but we also spend time discussing the supplemental: Tarantula (1955), yet another giant bug movie. How do these hold up against other films we've watched this month? Will Marco be a buzzkill once again and overanalyze the science in Tarantula? And what about the MRAC giveaway? Tune in to find out. And tune in next week as we wrap up the month with Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958). email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com
"Do you think we're robot clean/ Does this face look almost mean/ Is it time to be an android not a man?" This week, it's time for some 60s space-age nonsense. So join us for bikini babes on the beach, a guy in a gorilla suit, rock-n-roll dance parties, and a bald little freak from space. And SO much archival B-roll. It may not be nuclear, it may not be from space, but Creature from the Black Lagoon is a 1950's monster and we are covering it. Why? That's how we roll. Join us as we break down this classic, as well as a non-classic: The Beginning of the End (1957). Tune in for the fun, and tune in next week as we cover The Blob (1958) mracfilmclub@gmail.com
Is your Tuesday grey? Does it break your heart? Give you a heart attack? Make you wanna stay in bed? We say pshaw, Robert Smith, PSHAW! He apparently doesn't know that Tuesday means brand new O3L episodes. Come to think of it, no matter what day you listen, you'll say "I'm in love." Or perhaps this our thinly veiled way of saying that, in this episode, we chat about songs with a day of the week in the title. Our Third Lad this week is Dan Cuddy, the bassist/singer/songwriter who has been leading Hoboken, New Jersey's The Special Pillow since 1995, and was previously in the late '80s/early '90s psych-tinged indie rockers Hypnolovewheel. The Special Pillow are esteemed purveyors of a full-spectrum, string-driven sound encompassing concise '60s-flavored pop gems, dreamy hallucinogenic reveries, and pulse-pounding propulsion redolent of your favorite antipodean indie upstarts of the '80s. The band specializes in catchy and confounding songcraft that has earned them notable fans such as Yo La Tengo, who have covered the group's classic "Automatic Doom" The Special Pillow Meets the Space Monster is the latest in a series of acclaimed EPs, following in the wake of Mind Wipe (2022) and World's Finest (2020). It is named in honor of the 1965 science-fiction potboiler, Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, the soundtrack of that cinematic milestone being the source of the featured cover song, "That's the Way It's Got to Be," originally performed by Scotland's beat titans The Poets and an underground hit for The Special Pillow in the summer of 2023. This is the first week of a new month. The theme: The Nuclear Space Monster: Fear and Normalization in the 1950's. This month was put together by Brian in reaction to last month's theme of Kurosawa and Post War Japan. This week we cover two films in rapid fire. The main feature is Them! (1954), and the supplemental is The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953). Join us as we talk the nuclear scare, animatronic ants, stop motion and the science behind 1950's B movies. Apologies for the abrupt ending. Join us next week as we discuss the classic Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954). And more details to come about our giveaway.
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In yet another impromptu “bonus” episode, Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss a film that was finally unleashed upon the world by SRS Cinema: Space Monster Wangmagwi. As you can see, this one actually fits the season theme of The Monster Island World Tour. As mentioned in the Yongary episode, this was also released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, beating Yongary by a few months. But like many South Korean kaiju films, the story around this one exceeds its artistic merits. In its case, it was a “holy grail” of a lost film for kaiju fans; a thing of legend that few ever saw. But thanks to the dogged efforts of Ron Bonk, it's now readily available. Just prepare yourself for a “rantmaster” about Squirrel (not “Spider”), King of the Kennys! Byrd, Matt and Kevin discuss the South Korean obscurity, 1967's Space Monster Wangmagwi! Made (cheaply) to compete with the same year's Yongary, Wangmagwi has been a rarity up until 2023 when it got its first home video release (in any country!) via SRS Cinema in The United States. The film was thought lost until the Korean Film Archive started doing rare showings at festivals in the 2000s, which only made giant monster fans even more curious. The film tells of a space monster sent to destroy the population to make room for its alien overlords to populate the earth. Along the way we have interrupted weddings, someone falling in their own poop, and a homeless child getting stuck inside the monsters head in one of the most stream of consciousness monster movies we've ever seen. We expected weird, but nothing could have prepared us for the madness that is Wangmagwi. So how does the film hold up to the hype it has built in its decades in hiding? Listen and find out!

Ok, so we kinda stretched this one. This film was released in 1980, but was made in the 70s and still has the 70s vibe, so there. Anywhoooo, if you ever wanted to see a last ditch effort by a studio to revive a franchise using clip shows and popular, yet out of place, tropes; then look no further than today's installment of Gamera, Space Monster. Seriously, when it's not ripping things off, it's just showing old clips of older Gamera films.
YHS on Monster Island returns to review the recently acquired South Korean film, Space Monster Wangmagwi…and it's a doozy! Not only do we get a creepy monster (and not in the horror film “creepy” way), we witness the kaiju genre's first inner ear canal urination scene, terrible paper mâché monster feet, and the very best in retro sci-fi costuming! Can Jay's compliment sandwich do enough to salvage Wangmagwi's reputation or will Jake toss it back into the lost and (not) found drawer in the Korean film archive? But it's not just the review on this week's episode, the duo goes over recently pick-ups ranging from Marmit to Marusan to Trendmasters - and includes a Top 10 Wishlist acquisition! Other quick hitters include Jay's hatred for Gyaos, the greatness of Sinbad, and the struggle of making a top 10 episode list for Ultra Q. It's a fun one on the Island…so join us!

Also, James "sells" Craig T. Nelson a haunted house, Clark Gable parties with Louis B. Mayer, a Boy Scout uniform leads to an acting career and a controversial "Jeffersons" episode nearly sinks a plum TV pitchman gig. PLUS: "Return of the Living Dead"! The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! The astronomers at the University of Valencia have recorded a powerful flare on a magnetar, a neutron star with an extremely strong magnetic field, 13 million light-years away from Earth in a group of galaxies in the Sculptor constellation. It all happened in just 0.16 seconds. In a fraction of a second, the flare released energy equivalent to what our Sun emits in 100,000 years. This huge explosion got the nickname "space monster".

This episode of YHS on Monster Island is brought to you by the letter "X". "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and his sidekick, Jay Key, tackle not one - but two- kaiju flicks from Shochiku: 1967's The X from Outer Space and 2008's follow-up, Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit. If you aren't already familiar with these films - hold on tight - because they offer a little bit of everything, from truly original kaiju design to moon dancing to famous cameos to Kim Jong-Il. Most notably, it demonstrates two very unique ways that kaiju can stop deadly missiles. So grab a cocktail, check for any Guilalanium, put on your headphones (make sure they aren't the brainwashing kind), and start chanting "Neci-Coma" - because YHS on Monster Island is taking you to GuiLALA-Land! In addition to reviewing these two movies, Jake and Jay discuss some big news items such as Apple TV+'s upcoming Monsterverse series, a new Marusan 350 BioGoji, and SH Monster Arts' Singular Point Rodan! Oh, and is there a new Guilala toy? Now that's timing. And don't forget weekly pick-ups!

It's the year 20,018, and Alabaster Infinity has to team up with Dr. Whendiana Joan to find a new galaxy to inhabit. But when their RocCat Ship is set upon by monsters of many colors, can the intrepid crew survive? Lessons include: it's fun to have favorite things, as long as it doesn't close you off to new experiences; however strange someone's culture may seem, they are probably still capable (and deserving) of great kindness. Hello, kaiju lovers! Making his third trip to Monster Island—but his first appearance on MIFV—is none other than the Kaiju Groupie himself, Michael Hamilton. He paid Nathan and Jimmy a visit to discuss Dogora, the Space Monster, which was one of three kaiju films released in 1964 by Toho. The titular space squid is a nightmare straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft story—minus the sorta lame weakness. (To quote Batman, “Bees. My god.”) Nathan and Michael also discuss Japan's infamous mafia, the Yakuza, since there are elements of it in this film. Enjoy! Check out Michael's titular podcast and social media here. Episode image created by, well, Michael Hamilton. Read Jimmy's Notes on this episode. Hangout episodes are less-structured episodes that come during breaks between our main, structured episodes. In each one we choose two movies to discuss in free-wheeling conversations. This episode, Tony Salvaggio, tech director at Rooster Teeth, chose low-budget, surprisingly engaging SF movie Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster (1965) and writer Jason Henderson chose the grimy, trashy, thrilling Spanish horror The House That Screamed (1969). Along the way we also touch on how picking on bad movies is less fun than enjoying hidden treasures, and what we think of the 1980 Golden Turkey Awards. (Episode 284)
Jim reflects on another "Guilty Pleasure" from his youth - the 1958 Cult Classic, "Queen Of Outer Space," starring Zsa Zsa Gabor, Eric Fleming, Laurie Mitchell, Dave Willock, Patrick Waltz and Paul Birch. Four astronauts find themselves on the planet Venus, now inhabited by a race of beauty queens and swimsuit models. The evil Queen Yllana has plans to destroy the Earth, so the race is on. You must check out this episode of "Monster Attack!" The fate of the planet depends on it.

Januar 1991.

Welcome back metal fans - this time we're checking out US west coast power metal act Helion Prime, with their new release “Terror Of The Cybernetic Space Monster”, due out from AFM Records on August 31, 2018. I'd heard the 2016 self-titled debut from Helion Prime, and thought it was an impressive effort, albeit something of a diamond-in-the-rough. The concept of a “science metal” band was one I found intriguing, and that amalgam of nerdy lyrical themes meshed well with the catchy, uplifting power metal Helion Prime offered up. Helion Prime's new album “Terror Of The Cybernetic Space Monster” builds on that foundation and advances it significantly. I'll touch on a few highlights. After the spooky opening atmospheric “Failed Hypothesis”, the album segues into the dynamic crusher “A King Is Born”. This track is a brilliant intro, giving fans the origin-story of band mascot Saibot in dramatic and colorful fashion. New singer Sozos Michael exudes strength and passion on this one, giving the fantastic storyline a punch of emotion. There are plenty of great tracks here, including the melodic “Spectrum” and charging “Bury The Sun”. Perhaps my favorite song is “Atlas Obscura” which delivers a killer verse and a catchy, flavorful chorus. Not all tracks are favs, but even those that don't register top marks are well-crafted, and there's certainly no filler to be found here. The final song and album title track is the longest of the effort. A segmented, epic affair, this power metal tour-du-force provides the listener great pacing and storyline in the closing act. As much of a fan as I am of former Helion Prime singer Heather Michelle – and I consider her one of the top up-and-coming singers in North American metal – after multiple listens I have come to the conclusion Sozo's voice may be better suited to Helion Prime's music. Mostly because his vocals so drip that European metal texture; you can hear that this guy fits comfortably in the tradition of power metal crooners like Michael Kiske and Roy Khan. I continued to be blown away by the musicianship of Helion Prime guitarist Jason Ashcraft. In an era where too much is often viewed as mpt enough, Jason doesn't have to overwhelm us with a barrage of riffs to display his axe prowess. It's clear a lot of time and thought went into devising these tracks. This is considered composition and songwriting! In summary, I'm very impressed with the quality of this new material from Helion Prime. This band is developing their sound, and seeming to be finding their niche. Two big thumbs up to Jason and the Helion Prime crew for an outstanding sophomore effort. One of the better metal albums so far this year and a must-purchase for power metal fans. Helion Prime's “Terror Of The Cybernetic Space Monster” is available from AFM Records, via all the normal online outlets.
Not Frankenstein takes on horny Martians, and for a brief moment meets the titular Space Monster! We deconstruct this 1965 gem that's got it all! Bikini Babes, aggressive Racists and much more! Please remember to rate us on Apple Podcasts or wherever fine podcasts are available. Wikipedia Summary:All of the women on the planet Mars have died in an atomic war, except for Martian Princess Marcuzan (Marilyn Hanold). Marcuzan and her right-hand man, Dr. Nadir (Lou Cutell), decide they will travel to Earth and steal all of the women on the planet in order to continue the Martian race. The Martians shoot down a space capsule manned by the android astronaut Colonel Frank Saunders (Robert Reilly), causing it to crash in Puerto Rico. Frank's electronic brain and the left half of his face are damaged after encountering a trigger-happy Martian and his ray gun. Frank, now the "Frankenstein" of the title, described by his creator as an "astro-robot without a control system", proceeds to terrorize the island. A subplot involves the Martians abducting bikini-clad women. As with many a story, this one begins in space, with Space Japan being Space Attacked by some sort of giant Space Monster. In this particular case, it's Space Skynet. Of course, the only reasonable response to this threat is to make a giant humanoid robot that basically never actually walks (and instead flies?!) to attack Space Skynet's rampaging armies. At least you have some sweet tunes and majestic views to aid you in your journey!

Madeline Brumby is back to help "Monster Attack" celebrate its 2nd Anniversary with a look at Jack Arnold's 1953 Sci-Fi Classic "It Came From Outer Space," starring Richard Carlson, Barbara Rush, Charles Drake and Russell Johnson. Jim and Madeline examine this beautifully crafted film written by Ray Bradbury on this very special episode of Monster Attack.

Character actor extraordinaire James Karen has appeared in over 80 movies, over 100 television shows and a staggering 5,000 TV commercials. In a career spanning nearly 7 decades (!), he's worked with Frederic March, Lauren Bacall, James Garner, Gene Hackman, Steven Spielberg, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford and Will Smith, to name but a few. Gilbert and Frank phoned James one recent Saturday night to cover a VERY wide range of topics, including his film debut in the immortal "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster," his years-long friendship with the legendary Buster Keaton and his experience sharing a townhouse with Marlon Brando, Wally Cox and Maureen Stapleton. Also, James "sells" Craig T. Nelson a haunted house, a Boy Scout uniform leads to an acting career and a controversial "Jeffersons" episode nearly torpedoes a plum TV pitchman gig. PLUS: James parties with Clark Gable and Louis B. Mayer! Gilbert gets a one-cent residual check! Moe Howard recites from "The Tempest"! And James teaches a teenaged Michael Douglas to drive!
