If you haven't seen Backrooms (2026) yet, you're missing out on one of the most intriguing horror experiences in recent years. Directed by Kane Parsons, this film takes the viral creepypasta concept and turns it into a dread-filled, must-watch nightmare. With an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a massive box office draw, it's proof that original, low-budget storytelling is becoming the future of film. My short film, “Bishop's Day” is available to check out on YouTube, and make sure to check out my written reviews at www.ClassicAmericanMovies.com
Horror has always managed to do well at the box office. The way of thinking has always been since the movies are so cheap to make, it is easy to profit of of them. This year has been especially good, with indie horror doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It is clear there is a lesson to learn from this, but will Hollywood learn the right one. (Spoiler alert: no.) Zack Snyder is one of the most polarizing directors around today. That takes in a lot of territory since pretty much everything fits that description nowadays. We talk about his latest project and why we are interested in it. Does this make us Snyderbros? Chum does not reinvent the wheel, but it does not have to. It is a simple revenge story filled with some of the best shark attacks we have ever seen on this show. We talk about the use of AI and how less can sometimes be more. A great sharksploitation movie is more than just a kick ass shark, however. It is not a question of how poor the writing in Chum is; the question is does it ruin all the good the rest of the movie does. “The Killing Cell” is an awesome found footage film that's been tearing up the festival circuit with awards and nominations! Writer/director/producer and actor Karsen Schovajsa and his crew pulled together a nostalgic horror flick that captures the same eerie energy as “Hell House LLC” and “Grave Encounters.” I was lucky enough to check out a screener, absolutely loved it, and had to bring Karsen onto the podcast to talk all about the making of this soon-to-be cult hit! Make sure to follow TheKillingCellMovie, DeadRenegadeFilms, ScreenSanctity (James Bessey, co-director)and Karsen_Thomas3 for updates on the film. Over the years, we have seen and discussed how horror has become more acceptable in the mainstream. This week we talk about two of the most striking examples of this. One is interesting while the other is just straight up weird. But both have us interested. The idea of a nun who has lost her faith is not strange for an exorcism movie. Having the first introduction of said nun has her completely nude and coked up after a threesome is a little different. After showing off this incredibly buff nun, the awesomely titled Speed Demon takes off from there. The film is an example of less being more. It does not reinvent the wheel and tells the simple story of a person trying to overcome their personal demons in order to defeat a literal one. And it works thanks to its setting and quick pace. But it is in the closing moments that Speed Demon truly shines. In a whirlwind of revelations, the most powerful people in the world become entrenched in Sister Lu's world. It also sets up the promise of what could be an exciting franchise. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. ***This podcast contains light spoilers*** If you miss the era of grimy 2000's horror movies with practical effects, real locations, and wild behind-the-scenes stories, you should check out Passenger. Watching it felt like stumbling onto a lost horror flick from 20 years ago. Then while the credits were rolling, I spotted a familiar name — my old friend Coalin Smith as the 2nd AD. Naturally, I texted him immediately and asked if he wanted to come on the podcast to talk about what it was actually like making it … and thankfully, he said yes. So after my review, stick around for stories from behind the camera. Honestly, the behind-the-scenes stories might be just as entertaining as a movie itself. Obsession has become one of the biggest and most talked about movies in America. So much so that it has actually been the number one movie at the box office during the week. Obviously, this will change over the holiday weekend, but it is still nice to see it doing so well. We also talk about what the future holds for it. It seems like we have been talking about Crystal Lake for years. And every once in a while, we have a little bit more information to discuss. This time we actually have a release date for the Friday the 13th spinoff. And it is just around the corner. Zombie apocalypse movies are a staple of horror. They can do a lot by doing a little. To break away from the formula, there have been a number of movies in the sub-genre that have tried to do more. This Is Not a Test tries to bring a depth rarely seen in zombie films. This ends up ruining the whole thing. At the very least, you would figure that people who like these types of films would enjoy it. The opening certainly gives that impression. After all, it is a generic zombie movie. Then you realize that there is a big piece missing from what is otherwise a ho-hum release. It feels nice to finally have the podcast studio up and running. For my first film, I'm covering Curry Barker's Obsession. Since seeing his first film, Milk & Serial , I knew Barker was someone special. What he can create with no money is amazing and I've said numerous times that if given the budget, he would be the next big name. Well, with about $750k, he made one kick ass horror flick. If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. A few weeks back we wondered how well Michael would fare at the box office. There is so much to his legacy that we truly had no idea. Two weeks later, we have a good idea. It also leads to a discussion about how the media, especially movie critics, really suck. It took one of us a second viewing to truly appreciate it, but we both loved Longlegs. It is moody, well acted, and just all around frightening. Unsurprisingly, we are very excited to see the sequel. Surprisingly, that is going to be longer than expected. Hokum was recently released and will probably end up being on the list for one of the best horror movies of the year. Based on his output, it seems like director Damian McCarthy has a promising future in horror. At least we thought that until The Python Hunt did not have to do much. The true story is centered around an annual competition in Florida about the hunting and killing of invasive pythons in the Everglades. This means you will get a cool setting, conflict, and eccentric characters. So, how does the film disappoint after delivering on all of this? This documentary is a great example of how important it is for this type of release to have some type of message or some semblance of a story. It is certainly interesting, but that will only take you so far. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Tale From the Crypt is one of the best anthology horror shows of all time. One of the things that made it so special is that so much has been left to our memories. It has not been available for literally decades. We are excited to hear that the full series is coming to Shudder, but we also wonder how well it will hold up. One of the most important parts of starting any new job is the onboarding process. It is during this time that you learn all the rules and regulations that will govern your work life. We found an instructional work video from the late 1980s that is one of the funniest and most disgusting things we have ever seen. One of the big surprises of the post-Covid world is the lack of movies about it. This is not a complaint as we thought he would be flooded by pandemic films. There have been a few, but the films that have dealt with it have chosen to dance around it or use it as a storytelling device. Such is the case with Itch! The premise includes the sudden onset of a virus that leads to a lockdown. It is a relatable situation that also includes some old horror tropes. There are some good moments, but it is a frustrating watch. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. "The ultimate indie film success story! Writer and director Ian Tuason joins Giles Alderson to discuss his massive breakout horror hit, Undertone. Made for just $500,000, Undertone sparked a bidding war at Fantasia Fest, was acquired by A24 in a 7-figure deal, and is now crushing the global box office ($20M and counting). Ian breaks down how he crafted 'the scariest movie you'll ever hear' by making an audio-driven horror film where only one speaking character (Nina Kiri) is ever shown on screen. We dive deep into the emotional reality of indie filmmaking, as Ian reveals what it was like to shoot the film in his childhood home where he previously cared for his terminally ill parents. We also discuss his background in 360-degree VR horror and how this massive indie hit led to him being hired by Jason Blum and James Wan to write and direct Paranormal Activity 8. There is no doubting Scream's place in horror history. Still, it is somewhat surprising what the latest installment has done. Part of the success of the sequels is due to Jenna Ortega. There was a time when she was white hot and seemed poised to take over Hollywood. Has that window already closed? Horror heads of a certain age will remember Faces of Death. These memories go beyond just seeing the mondo “documentary”. They extend to the first time they heard about it, the stories surrounding, and how they felt watching it. Each new month brings us another remake, but it was safe to say we weren't going to see Faces of Death redone. This week's feature presentation is the surprising remake of the cult classic. Obviously, there was no way they could do a one to one reboot. The original was even a real movie. What they end up doing will surprise everyone familiar with the source material. The modern version of Faces of Death is a slasher. And it is a very well done one. The casting is spot on and the story does not overstay its welcome. It brings laughs and gore and is a strong addition to the franchise. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. There are always upcoming sequels to talk about. Tubi has been kicking ass and taking names. But for all the awesome older content on the channel, people tend to forget that it does have original programming. Last year's R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead was successful enough to have warranted a sequel. Did Tubi stumble on a Halloween franchise? Jennifer's Body is one of the most interesting movies of the 21st century. Released during the height of Megan Fox's popularity, the marketing centered around her and a possible lebsian plotline. Naturally, this did not attract a female audience who discovered the movie after the fact. Now regarded as a feminist cult classic, a sequel seems to be on the way. It has been a while since we have talked about cryptids. The fact of the matter is, they just are not as popular as they used to be. So, we were excited to watch a movie called The Yeti. The fantastic opening got us even more excited. Unfortunately, the film was not able to follow through. The Yeti is filled with flamboyant personalities, some good gore, and decent creature effects. But in between all of this, there is a lot of talking. It is not bad, but it is as if the movie is trying to be way more serious than it needs to be. Is that enough reason to pass on it, though? The 1980s were the best decade for larger than life action heroes. There were so many characters and moments to come out of the decade. We talk about the sudden passing of one of the greatest. Chuck Norris became a meme after the birth of the internet, but he never stopped being a bad ass. Plus, it seems like they are finally going through with a Conan sequel with possibly the biggest action star of them all. We throw around what direction it may decide to go. Another trademark of the 1980s was pumping out content. The straight to video market was booming leading to some awesome childhood memories. This also led to a number of names becoming familiar through the sheer volume of their work. You just don't see that anymore which is one of the things that made The Serpent's Skin so interesting to us. At only 21 years old, this is director Alice Maio Mackay's sixth film. An impressive feat that is a throwback to old school DIY exploitation guerilla filmmaking. Unfortunately, this also leads to some glaring flaws. Cringey dialogue and poor pacing take away from its grounded storytelling and Buffy-esque plot. The Serpent's Skin is filled with promise, and there is a lot to like. It just feels like it needs more seasoning. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. The kings of modern horror-comedy are here! Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (the filmmaking collective Radio Silence who made Scream and Scream VI) join Dom Lenoir and Conor Boru to discuss their blood-soaked new theatrical hit, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026). In this deep-dive interview, Matt and Tyler reveal why they decided to return to the universe of their 2019 breakout hit, how they managed to pick up the story on the exact same day seven years later, and the joy of torturing Samara Weaving all over again. We also discuss assembling a dream horror cast including Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elijah Wood, and director David Cronenberg. The duo breaks down their collaborative process on set, the lessons they learned from directing franchises, and how to successfully balance terrifying tension with laugh-out-loud comedy. If so, maybe you should listen to our discussion of You'll Never Find Me (2023), because you might change your mind.

Growing up, we were fans of The X-Files. Reboots have been a mixed bag, however. That does not stop us from being excited about Ryan Coogler's upcoming take on the series. As we speculated last week, The Last Drive-In aired its final episode. According to those in the know, there will be more to come. The first movie this show throws a lot at the wall. It is a supernatural horror movie with a haunted house, ghosts, and cursed objects. Plus, there are twins, a blind medium, and a monster. Oddity makes it work thanks to patient writing and some of the best placed scares we have ever seen. We have covered lots of found footage on our show. Bodycam is the first one to make one of us feel physically ill. And it had nothing to do with what is in the movie. Its chaotic pacing and extra shaky shaky cam will make this a difficult watch for anyone with a weak stomach. It does try to do something different by having a semblance of a plot. This works until it doesn't. After a great set-up, Bodycam runs out of ideas. The first and biggest issue happens almost immediately. There is no reason for anything in the movie to be happening. As things progress, it becomes more convoluted and less enjoyable. Maybe it is better for found footage movies to have no plot. This one is being released a bit late, but take a look back at 2025 Horror with us as we go through our TOP 10 HORROR MOVIES OF 2025! 2025 was another HUGE year for horror. This year we saw everything from experimental ghost and animal POVs, killers on land and in the sea, sexy monsters, and DIY resurrections! Some horror directors have solidified their names in the history of horror with more insanely good follow ups. We also had a bunch of INDIE HORROR movies give us a fresh take on the genre. In this episode we look at all these plus some bonus honorable mentions. What will make our top 10 list for 2025?? Listen to find out! Also, we want to know what your favorite Horror movies of 2025 were. Drop your favorites in the comments!❤️
The genesis of our show can be found in the Alamo Drafthouse. We may not go to it as often as we used to, but we did not want to see it close its doors in El Paso. We have not had too many good things to say about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise recently. Maybe the latest update will have us singing a different tune. Plus, a lot of Mike Flannagan news.Unsurprisingly, we love Halloween. The costumes, the movies, the parties, we enjoy it all. Still, a Halloween movie at the beginning of the year is a little weird. But what if that movie dresses up as a Halloween movie but has nothing to do with it?Even putting aside the fact that it is a Halloween movie that has no costumes, no decorations, and no pumpkins, The Haunted Forest is a strange film. The protagonist is surrounded by death, but is more concerned about whether he should go to work. A woman on her way to college grooms a high school kid. Two haunts with similar names become involved in a blood feud. It also includes the hardest cut possible ever seen in movie history.Movies based on video games are nothing new. One of the biggest stories of this young year is how a small indie horror based on a little game has been a box office success. It is hard to believe that within a matter of weeks, two indie horrors based on indie games have dropped, however. The Mortuary Assistant has the expected thrills, chills, and spills. It does a nice job of changing up the formula by having the vessel for possession have much more agency. There are also some spooky visuals in it. If only the damn story did not get in the way. It was an interesting weekend at the box office. The big discourse was all around Melania, but we don't really care about that. What was interesting to us was the battle for the top spot between an old favorite and a YouTuber. We also talk about an exorcism movie in the White House and an upcoming movie we reviewed years ago.Teacher's Pet sounds like it is an erotic thriller. The story centers around a new high school teacher who notices and wants to help a student in his class. Naturally, things are not what they seem. Instead of a sultry suspense, the film is much more frightening.Horror taught us long ago that a great villain can take a movie a long way. Think of all the fan favorite killers that lead very popular franchises. Teacher's Pet has a strong villain that carries its basic plot. (The story may be paint-by-numbers, but it is very well written.) There are some noticeable flaws, but it is worth watching.Whistle has one of the strongest casts seen in an indie horror movie. Dafnee Keen and Nick Frost are the big names, but it also includes stars from Yellowjackets, Rebel Moon, and the upcoming Hunger Games movies. Even better, no one phones in their performances. There may not be much to the characters, but they are fun.The film is a typical high school slasher filled with corny lines, unrequited love, and infighting. The kills are amazing and how the killer commits their acts is a cool idea. But after a very strong first two acts, the story relies on a very familiar crutch and almost ruins everything. Astra Award-winning actor, Indy! He won for his performance in Good Boy (2025) Who’s a good boy? Why, you are, Indy! In a monumental achievement, Indy the dog’s performance in Good Boy earned him the Astra Award for Best Performance in a Horror or Thriller, beating out his esteemed human competition. In a year that has started off with so much social friction, it is amazing news like this that gives us hope. This win is for the underdog. How did Indy do it? Listen to my interview with director Ben Leonberg about how they pulled off this miraculous feat. The Astra Awards are presented by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, a collective group of movie industry professionals, and this was their ninth annual awards ceremony. The Astra Awards expand the genres eligible for awards. Like the Golden Globes, they award separate categories for dramas and comedies/musicals. In a laudable move, they also have awards for best horror or thriller. So, this is not a genre awards festival; they have set these awards to align with the end of the year and the lead-up to the Oscars. Indy’s competition this year was strong: Alfie Williams for 28 Years Later Alison Brie for Together Ethan Hawke for The Black Phone 2 Sally Hawkins for Bring Her Back Sophie Thatcher for Companion Indy the Dog for Good Boy Curiously, no acting nominations for Sinners or Weapons. I’m actually pleased that these other performances got rewarded. No worries. There will almost certainly be Oscar noms for Amy Madigan and Michael B. Jordan. This may be a first: a non-human acting award over human competition. I think the Astra Awards just made some waves. For those of you who fall in love with Indy and want a dog like him, he is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. It’s an uncommon breed, but I’d expect this movie to make the breed a lot more popular! The AKC describes this breed as “lovey dovey”, pretty good with other dogs, and very good with children. Moreover, they are super cute. How Did They Pull This Off? First and foremost, it helps that Indy is director Ben Leonberg’s pet. Secondly, it took a very long time, over three years from start to release. Hundreds of hours of footage had to be shot to capture the perfect reaction for Indy, and the shooting schedule was limited to three-hour sessions with him to avoid wearing him out. For anyone worried about harming the dog, worry not! All the acting was done with positive reinforcement and treats, and a stunt dog was used for any truly perilous scenes. Harm to dogs is a trigger for many viewers, particularly in horror movies. People who willingly put good money to see teenagers get slaughtered by the dozen will nope out with violence to a dog. So, many people have asked me, “Does Indy make it?” I can’t say that without spoiling the movie, since it’s all about him. However, if it means the difference between seeing the movie and not, I suggest you go to the site Does the Dog Die trigger warning database to get the spoilers. Good Boy is going to go down as the little Indie Horror film that could for 2025. On a reported budget of only $70,000, the movie to date, with a limited release, has a worldwide gross of over $8,700,000… plus whatever they were able to receive as their Shudder contract. That’s over a 100:1 ratio of profitability! Congratulations to Indy and Ben for their wonderful movie. This will be a cult film favorite. It lands at #4 on my Horror Movies for 2025, and I know I am not alone in my admiration for this movie. The Interview: For deeper insight into the movie’s production and how Ben got such a wonderful performance out of Indy, here is my interview with Leonberg at the Overlook Film Festival in April 2025. I’ve been doing industry interviews for going on nine years, and this is one of my absolute favorite discussions. Check it out! Ben Leonberg of Good Boy, directing his dog, the award-winning Indy. On set with the dog height camera rig: Indy and Ben Leonberg from Good Boy.
