In 2005, Logan County investigators say 18-year-old Scott Moody shot and killed his mom, grandparents and two friends before turning the gun on himself. One problem with this theory is that Scott's sister Stacy was also shot that day, but she survived and insisted the shooter wasn't her brother, but a gray-haired man she had never seen before. Welcome to episode 21 of Ohio 88 where I, your host, Heather Wright, will discuss one of the most notorious individuals from Logan County, Ohio. For this episode, we will be discussing Scott Moody. It was a Sunday morning, May 29, 2005 when 18-year-old Scott Moody is said to have “lost it” and shot 6 people; killing 5, gravely injuring another, and then killing himself. According to the Columbus Dispatch, investigators never disclosed a motive for the massacre, although rumors had swirled in the small rural town of Bellfefontaine, Ohio. One of which involved him not wanting to have the responsibility of the family farm now that he was graduating high school. But is that what happened? Is Scott the real shooter? What motive could he have had? From 2005 until about 2018; that was the story. That is exactly what everyone thought happened on that Spring day. But information that has been released since has coincided with details that the lone survivor of that attack, Scott's 15-year-old sister, mentioned immediately after the shooting…from her hospital bed. Please keep your mind open whilst listening to this episode. It will be a tad different than previous episodes on the show and perhaps will offer you new insight into this case as well as a different perspective. Perhaps Scott Moody isn't the most notorious individual from Logan County, Ohio. But this story is just as, if not more important, than other subjects on the show - especially if he is in fact innocent of this atrocity, yet most believe he is the one who committed such a heinous act to his own family and close friend. When the police find his mother, grandparents, girlfriend, and friend murdered on the morning of his high school graduation they immediately proclaim Scott is the perpetrator in a massive murder suicide. It may have been an open-shut case to the police - but one person disagreed with them. Scott's little sister, Stacy, had been shot, too. And she had something to say that will blow your mind. On May 29, 2005, a young man named Scott Moody was preparing to graduate from Riverside high school. Scott lived in Bellfontaine, Ohio with his mother Sheri and sister Stacy. However, on the day of graduation, authorities received a 911 call and arrived at Scott Moody’s home. What authorities would discover was horrific. They found the bodies of Scott Moody, his mother Sheri, and 14-year-old Paige Harshbarger and 19-year-old Megan Karus who were Scott’s friends. Authorities would also find the bodies of Scott’s maternal grandparents Gary and Sheryl Shafer. The Shafers lived in a separate residence near their grandchildren and daughter. Someone had also shot Scott’s sister Stacy. She would be the only survivor. In 2 hours, the Logan County Sheriff’s department ruled the case a murder suicide and that Scott had killed his family before killing himself with a .22 caliber rifle. But there was a problem. When Stacy recovered enough to speak, she was asked who shot her. She said that she was shot by a gray haired man wearing a blue shirt. The police would dismiss her statement and tell her Scott was the shooter. Although Stacy and several witnesses saw a middle aged gray haired man, the Logan Sheriff’s department has always dismissed this person as the shooter. For this episode, I spoke to attorney and author Rob St. Clair who wrote the book titled Saving Stacy. Rob represented Scott’s father and also got to know the family well. He has spent many hours researching this case, studying court documentation and the sheriff’s documentation about the case. He explains that his company helps people who are getting older to live the same way as when they were younger. He does this with three basic foundational ideas: simpler, healthier, and happier. A simpler life includes integrating home automation technologies such as home repair services. A healthier life involves wellness devices and care services such as a scale or blood pressure monitor. Finally, a happier life brings connectivity outside of the community such as video chat capabilities with family, being able to order meals, or to even call or message anyone else in the community through an app.
