Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. The West Virginia-made comedy film “Ambrosia” opens statewide…Elk viewing tours return to Logan County this fall…and Build WV spurs new housing development in Preston County…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – The release of the trailer for a comedy film debuting this week in West Virginia may catch some viewers off guard. Filmed primarily in Beckley and starring West Virginia natives, the movie “Ambrosia!” is a high-style, polished affair that may seem more appropriate to affluent New England. Shane Pierce and David Gravely wrote and directed the 90-minute film, which follows the misadventures of an innkeeper who struggles to manage a house full of eccentric guests and staff. Gravely said he and Pierce felt the need to return to the basics of Hollywood films from the mid-1900s that families could watch together. Statewide theater showings have been confirmed for the following dates: Oct. 5 at the Robinson Grand in Clarksburg; Nov. 6 and  15 at the Floralee Hark Cohen Cinema in Charleston; Nov. 15 and 16 at Marquee Cinemas in Beckley; and Nov. 25 at the Greenbrier Valley Theater in Lewisburg. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/09/18/ambrosia-comedy-film-trailer-released/   #2 – From WCHS-TV –  Popular elk viewing tours have returned in Logan County. The four-hour tours at the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area provide the public an opportunity to see some of the estimated 130-140 elk in their natural habitats. The elk population were reintroduced to the state after a more than 100-year absence. More information and ticket details at wvstateparks.com under “Things to Do.” Tours sell out quickly, so get your tickets early! Read more: https://wchstv.com/news/local/elk-viewing-tours-available-again-at-logan-county-wildlife-area#   #3 – From DOMINION POST –  If you travel to Preston County and find the intersection of North Mountaineer Highway and Dogtown Road, near the confluence of Stacks Run and Stony Run, and take a good look around … you'll probably see a house, maybe a gas station and a whole lot of nature.   But that spot defines a Build WV Act district potentially worth a different kind of green for developers looking to construct housing anywhere within a 20-mile radius of that location.  Developers of approved projects receive incentives including sales tax exemptions and a property value adjustment credit. In order to be eligible, the housing project must be in a certified district and generate approved costs in excess of $3 million or include at least six residential units or houses.  Read more: https://www.dominionpost.com/2024/09/19/build-west-virginia-act-in-place-to-spur-new-housing-development/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Walter Reuther's name is forever linked to Detroit, Michigan, where he and his brother Victor built the United Automobile Workers -- the UAW -- into one of the largest and most progressive labor unions in American history. In Wheeling, West Virginia, where he was born on September 1, 1907, Reuther is a hometown boy who made good. Each year for the last eight years, the Wheeling Academy of Law and Science Foundation (WALS) has organized the Reuther-Pollack Labor History Symposium on Labor Day weekend. The annual event also celebrates the life and work of local stogie maker -- and union supporter -- Augustus Pollack. LHT producers Chris Garlock and Patrick Dixon drove out to Wheeling last Friday to cover the symposium, which included presentations by “Shift Happens” author J. Albert Mann, labor journalist Hamilton Nolan, West Virginia Mine Wars Museum co-founder Lou Martin and the Pittsburgh Labor Choir. We'll be sharing audio from those presentations in upcoming shows. West Virginia historian Hal Gorby led a walking tour on Saturday to statues of both Reuther and Pollack in a park along the Ohio River in downtown Wheeling. The noontime walk was interrupted by an intense but thankfully brief mountain thunderstorm, so you'll hear the rain and thunder in the background as we took shelter and the intrepid Dr. Gorby continued his local history talk beneath his oversized umbrella. On this week's Labor History in Two:  the year was 1921. On that day the “Battle of Blair Mountain” raged in Logan County, West Virginia.  Questions, comments, or suggestions are welcome, and to find out how you can be a part of Labor History Today, email us at LaborHistoryToday@gmail.com Labor History Today is produced by the Labor Heritage Foundation and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor. @FoundationWals @hamiltonnolan @JAlbertMann @WarsWV @UAW_Archivist @ReutherLibrary #LaborRadioPod #History #WorkingClass #ClassStruggle @GeorgetownKILWP #LaborHistory @UMDMLA @ILLaborHistory @AFLCIO @StrikeHistory #LaborHistory @wrkclasshistory

Isn't that wild?” Though uncharacteristic for the singer/songwriter, the heavier drum beats compliment her powerful voice, and the use of real fire as a backdrop sets the ideal tone for the full display of guitarist Shane Runyon's talent.   Produced by Allegheny Image Factory, the video was shot on location in Boytek's hometown of Logan.  Read more: https://therealwv.com/2024/07/28/kate-boytek-starts-a-fire-in-new-music-video/?es_id=c22a0a26d4   #2 – From WV COMMERCE – There are so many West Virginia Economic Development Authority success stories where companies are creating jobs and furthering economic opportunities in their community. Born in Penrith, Cumberland, he briefly attended trade school in London before returning to Penrith. When he was around twelve years old, Littlejohn immigrated to the Thirteen Colonies to pursue various apprenticeships under tradesmen in Virginia and Maryland. While not particularly religious as a youth, he was inspired by Methodist revivalist sermons and began service as a circuit rider in 1776, during the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.In his preaching, he traveled across the early United States, including Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D. C. After several years of itinerancy he settled in Leesburg, Virginia. There he served as a local preacher and saddler for several decades, and occasionally as a county magistrate, sheriff, and tax collector. As Loudoun County sheriff during the 1814 British raid on Washington, he protected a safehouse containing the relocated National Archives, including the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. In 1818, he moved with his family to Kentucky, where he served as a land agent, preaching alongside his work during travel across the state. He retired to Logan County in southern Kentucky, where he became a slaveholder. He died in 1836, after sixty years of preaching. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Saturday, 30 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see John Littlejohn (preacher) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Brian Standard.

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Friday, Jan. 19  As WV's elk program expands, the DNR plans a visitor's center and observation tower for wildlife enthusiasts. The Health Plan has a 44 year legacy of serving West Virginians. And a Morgantown neurologist is working to slow the progression of Alzheimer's…on today's daily304.   #1 – From WV EXPLORER – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will introduce 40 new elk to the Mountain State's growing herd in 2024 and create a visitors center and observation tower in Logan County to help wildlife enthusiasts observe the animals in a natural setting. Gov. Jim Justice said the introduction of elk has been a highlight of his administration. The current elk population is 110, and the herd roams the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area, which includes more than 25,155 acres in Logan and Mingo counties in the state's southwestern mountains. Since 2018, the division has offered guided elk tours in Logan County, where participants can learn more about the history of the species and get a chance to see elk in a natural setting. Tours are offered in September and October each year and usually sell out. Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2024/01/12/west-virginia-to-introduce-more-elk-create-new-elk-visitor-center/   #2 – From WV ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – A beacon of health and community support in Wheeling and throughout West Virginia, The Health Plan has been proudly saying #YesWV for over four decades. As one of the state's largest locally managed care organizations, The Health Plan has carved a rich history of commitment to the well-being of its members and the communities it serves. With offices strategically located in Wheeling, Charleston and Massillon, OH, The Health Plan manages and improves the health and well-being of its members with a comprehensive line of managed care products and services.  In addition, the company's dedication to community and charitable giving is evident in its sponsorship of local youth-focused asthma and diabetes camps, college scholarship programs, chamber of commerce events, and numerous community events throughout the region. This commitment goes beyond health care, emphasizing the importance of holistic well-being and community connection. Read more: https://westvirginia.gov/yeswv-the-health-plans-44-year-legacy-of-health-and-community/   #3 – From CBS NEWS – Anyone who has had experience with Alzheimer's disease knows the agony of watching someone fade away as it steals memory and at the end – a person's own identity. But a West Virginia doctor is experimenting with a way to beat back Alzheimer's.  Dr. Ali Rezai is the executive director of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute in Morgantown. He is attempting to delay the progression of Alzheimer's and its worst symptoms using ultrasound.  Intravenously delivered drugs can break up the brain plaque that leads to Alzheimer's but they can take 18 months or more to take effect, during which the disease continues to progress. Rezai uses ultrasound to help safely open the blood brain barrier enough to allow the drugs to rush in, thus treating the disease at a much faster rate. If Rezai's name sounds familiar, it's probably because he's a pioneer in Parkinson's research. He was among the first to implant a pacemaker-type device in the brain which stopped uncontrollable movements suffered by Parkinson's patients. In 2005, Logan County investigators say 18-year-old Scott Moody shot and killed his mom, grandparents and two friends before turning the gun on himself. One problem with this theory is that Scott's sister Stacy was also shot that day, but she survived and insisted the shooter wasn't her brother, but a gray-haired man she had never seen before. Today we've got a double feature of UFO sightings sent in to us by a listener in West Virginia.Back in July of 2020, I was with my dad and we were heading back home from one of my baseball games in Logan County, West Virginia. It was around 8:00 PM. As my dad was driving us back, we saw on the right side of the road through some trees odd looking green and red type lights. It was strange because it couldn't be a plane, it was too low to the ground to be a plane but too high in the trees to be a person. It was very strange. Never saw metal shapes or anything because the trees on the right side of the road blocked the view. I didn't take a photo because I didn't have a phone and we were driving. We didn't expect it and we passed it by. My dad and I always thought this was odd and might be a UFO due to the color and its height from the ground. It was also stationary. If this sighting wasn't weird enough the listener that sent this one in had one more. This happened on April 30th, 2023 around 7:00 in the evening near Madison, West Virginia. I was with my family riding in the back seat of our car when on my left out the window I could see a faint white circle. At first I thought it was a plane but then I saw a second object, similar in shape. They were going in circles kinda like vultures do when they find a dead animal. It was a very weird experience indeed. If you look at the zoomed in photo I sent, it doesn't really look like a drone or anything I can think of.Thank you to the listener who sent these two stories in! I've always heard if you've seen one UFO you'll see more, so to the fan who sent these in be sure to keep an eye out! Welcome to episode 21 of Ohio 88 where I, your host, Heather Wright, will discuss one of the most notorious individuals from Logan County, Ohio. For this episode, we will be discussing Scott Moody. It was a Sunday morning, May 29, 2005 when 18-year-old Scott Moody is said to have “lost it” and shot 6 people; killing 5, gravely injuring another, and then killing himself. According to the Columbus Dispatch, investigators never disclosed a motive for the massacre, although rumors had swirled in the small rural town of Bellfefontaine, Ohio. One of which involved him not wanting to have the responsibility of the family farm now that he was graduating high school. But is that what happened? Is Scott the real shooter? What motive could he have had? From 2005 until about 2018; that was the story. That is exactly what everyone thought happened on that Spring day. But information that has been released since has coincided with details that the lone survivor of that attack, Scott's 15-year-old sister, mentioned immediately after the shooting…from her hospital bed. Please keep your mind open whilst listening to this episode. It will be a tad different than previous episodes on the show and perhaps will offer you new insight into this case as well as a different perspective. Perhaps Scott Moody isn't the most notorious individual from Logan County, Ohio. But this story is just as, if not more important, than other subjects on the show - especially if he is in fact innocent of this atrocity, yet most believe he is the one who committed such a heinous act to his own family and close friend. CVB Executive Director Debrina Williams said 40% of the organization's working budget is based off the numbers presented in the report. “You can take a look at those numbers and know that tourism is booming in Logan County,” Williams said during Monday's meeting of the Logan County Commission. According to the CVB's annual report, the organization had $243,367.15 in total assets in 2022, compared to $236,761.23 in 2021.  Commission President Diana Barnette, who also sits on the CVB Board, noted that the 2022 figure is a representation of how much hotel/motel tax the county is raking in, largely due to out-of-state riders on the Hatfield McCoy Trails.   Read more: https://www.loganbanner.com/news/hatfield-mccoy-cvb-reports-higher-financials-for-2022/article_99575ef0-f81b-54a1-89b2-61261b73be38.html   #2 – From WV STATE PARKS –  Celebrate spring's return with a getaway at West Virginia state parks and forests! You understand the exhilaration of cruising the open road and the challenge of controlling a motorcycle. But motorcycling also can be dangerous.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges drivers and motorcyclists to share the road and be alert, and reminds motorcyclists to make themselves visible, to use DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets, and to always ride sober. Safe riding practices and cooperation from all road users will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on our nation's highways. But it's especially important for drivers to understand the safety challenges faced by motorcyclists such as size and visibility, and motorcycle riding practices like downshifting and weaving to know how to anticipate and respond to them. By raising motorists' awareness, both drivers and riders will be safer sharing the road. Learn more: https://www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/motorcycles Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. Most people in Lincoln, Illinois, didn't lock their doors in the 1970's. They weren't worried about murderers roaming around. Mike Hartnett and his wife arrived in town to work at Lincoln College, a private junior college. Both were ready to counsel Lincoln's students and they wondered how much trouble there could possibly be in this peaceful looking small town in 1972. If they'd only known, who knows if they would have gone there at all. Our book this week is “And I Cried, Too “, by Mike Hartnett. This episode's guest is our chaplain here at The Unlovely Truth, Lori Prather. She grew up near where these murders took place, and I grew up nearby in the Midwest. We were both pretty sheltered and stories like this were shocking to say the least. But unfortunately, they are reality as well, so I think we need to talk about them to see what takeaways we can glean from them to help ourselves and our communities be safer. Let's take a look at a great verse for anyone who thinks the Bible is super hard to understand. Some parts are more difficult than others and require more study to put them in the proper context, but this one is very straight forward. Let's read it: “Don't let anyone fool you. ‘Bad companions make a good person bad.'” 1 Corinthians 15:33 I chose the NIrV translation because it's made to be easy to read, and easy to understand. And context helps us as well. Paul is writing to the church at Corinth to warn them against false teaching. He knows how easily influenced we can be. In this week's case, Mike Mansfield went along with someone he thought was his friend and he ended up paying for his misplaced trust with his life. We've all been burned by someone we thought was our friend. We've watched it happen to our children too, haven't we? I'm so grateful that it never went this far for me, and I want to help you keep it from ever going this far in your life or the life of a loved one. To me, one of the biggest steps to accomplish that is a little self-awareness. In western Christianity, we love to talk about love, and grace, and forgiveness, and happy things like that. Great stuff, of course, but the Bible has a lot to say about evil too. We need to know what God says evil looks and acts like so we can recognize it, in others - and in ourselves. That's right. We don't like to think about that, but we all have the capacity for evil thoughts and deeds. Outside of Scripture, I think the late Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn said it best. Yes, I love all kinds of stories, even those from Russian dissidents. But listen to what he has to say about how understanding evil really means understanding human nature. “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” Let's all find someone this week that we can have a conversation with about this. The first step toward being safer is being aware of what we have to keep ourselves safe from. And sometimes, that doesn't look like what we might think it should. Season 6, Episode 6 - Follow the Van Just a few days after Bob and Kristin were last seen alive in North Dakota in August 1993, a manager at the Burlington Northern railroad yard in Aberdeen, South Dakota picked up the phone and called the police. There was a darn Dodge van just sitting in stall No. 10, he told them. It seemed to be abandoned. There were no license plates on the thing. Today, that same 1979 B200 Dodge van is in Logan County, North Dakota, where it is being held as evidence. The van belonged to Bob – it was how he and Kristin got to North Dakota, and they were in it the last day they were seen. So how did it end up abandoned in a city 100 miles away from Wishek? In this episode, co-producers James Wolner and Jeremy Fugleberg continue their investigation into the 1993 unsolved disappearance of Kristin Diede and Bob Anderson and share detailed information about the week following Bob and Kristin's last sighting.
