In a special Trouble Shooter episode of CFO Thought Leader, we speak with Tal Kirschenbaum, CEO and founder of Ledge. Together, we delve into his career journey and the foresight that led him to identify a significant opportunity in finance automation. Tal's path, starting from his finance education at the University of Chicago and Tel Aviv University, through various roles at Intel Capital, BCG, Facebook, and Milio, provided him with a broad perspective on financial operations and corporate development. At the core of Tal's entrepreneurial vision is a keen awareness of the inefficiencies in traditional finance operations. He identified a common challenge faced by finance teams: the reliance on manual processes and siloed systems, which often lead to increased workloads and errors. This insight spurred the creation of Ledge, a platform designed to automate repetitive tasks and streamline financial data management. Tal's experiences highlighted the critical role of AI in transforming finance functions. He emphasized that AI can address the high volume of unstructured data finance teams deal with daily. For instance, AI-driven solutions can resolve discrepancies in transaction data, such as mismatched names between bank transfers and invoices, significantly reducing manual intervention. Moreover, Tal sees AI as a powerful tool for financial forecasting. By using AI to predict outcomes based on historical data and user inputs, finance teams can move away from time-consuming manual data manipulation and focus on strategic decision-making. This shift not only enhances efficiency but also addresses the acute shortage of skilled accountants by automating routine tasks and allowing finance professionals to engage in more valuable work. In today's challenging economic environment, Tal advises finance leaders to prioritize sustainable and profitable growth. He believes that integrating AI into finance operations is crucial for achieving increased efficiency and supporting complex business operations. As the market demands more from finance teams, leveraging AI can be the key to maintaining competitiveness and ensuring long-term success.

Ron Whittier Interview Introduction Intel Corporation was founded in 1968 by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, who left Fairchild Semiconductor to start their own company. In the early years from 1970 to 1978, Intel went through major inflection points that helped transform it from a startup to an industry leader. Ron Whittier, who joined Intel in 1970 as an engineering manager, played a key role in navigating many of these pivotal moments. This included instilling the pioneering "Intel Culture" driven by Andy Grove, expanding into new product lines like microprocessors, raising funds through Intel's first public offering in 1972, and then rapidly scaling up design and manufacturing capabilities. From 1978 to 2000, Intel experienced explosive growth riding the PC revolution and the emergence of the world-wide web. Ron helped the company successfully navigate through additional inflection points like improving manufacturing processes under Craig Barrett's leadership, the famous decision to exit the DRAM business to focus on microprocessors, developing major marketing campaigns like "Intel Inside", transitioning to being a sole microprocessor supplier, and forming new groups like the Intel Architecture Labs and Intel Capital. Through recognizing and deftly navigating these many inflection points, Ron and Intel's leadership team transformed the company into a global technology powerhouse. We talked about   How did Intel balance looking for outside ideas and developing things internally? When you listen to historians talk about the history of Intel, what are they missing or not getting 100% correct? What words do you want to say to the next generation of Intel employees and entrepreneurs out there? Did you ever look at the other companies in Silicon Valley and think that their businesses were being run in ways that you wished to model? And much more…

As Ben Lorica will readily admit, at the risk of dating himself, he belongs to the first generation of data scientists. In addition to having served as Chief Data Scientist for the likes of Databricks and O'Reilly, Lorica advises and works with a number of venture capitals, startups and enterprises, conducts surveys, and chairs some of the top data and AI events in the world. That gives him a unique vantage point to identify developments in this space. Having worked in academia teaching applied mathematics and statistics for years, at some point Lorica realized that he wanted his work to have more practical implications. At that point the term "data science" was not yet coined, and Lorica's exit strategy was to become a quant. Fast forwarding to today, Lorica still has friends in the venture capital world. That includes Intel Capital's Assaf Araki, with whom Lorica co-authored two recent posts on data management and AI trends. We caught up with Lorica to discuss those, as well as new areas for growth and the trouble with unicorns and what to do about it.
