Face to Face, Nikki's new album is out today! As a founder member of the hugely innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra in the early 90s, Nikki Iles came to prominence working with musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Mark Anthony Turnage, Kenny Wheeler and Mike Gibbs.Mike subsequently booked her for one of her first recording dates with great American musicians, Steve Swallow and Bob Moses on the CD “By The Way” on AH HUM records. For many years, Nikki served a lengthy apprenticeship in the North of England playing with the cream of British and American jazz such as Peter King, Iain Ballamy, Art Farmer, Peter King ,Tina May ,Tim Garland and Jim Mullen. Many of these relationships were re- kindled later ,when after a car accident, Nikki finally decided to make the move to London in 1998. Here she joined the groups and toured and recorded with musicians such as Steve Arguelles, Mick Hutton, Martin Speake, Stan Sulzmann and Julian Arguelles and Norma Winstone .Several awards followed with the BT British Jazz Award and an IAJE Award in America for services to Jazz. Although well known as a pianist, composition still remains a major part of her musical life. The breadth of Nikki's artistic vision has led her to disregard the arbitrary boundaries of the jazz scene and most notably, commissions have included a collaboration with American dancer Mimi Cichanowicz , the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Finland, “A Gentle Prayer “ - London Sinfonietta , “Red Ellen” - Tim Garland's Northern Underground Band, “Carillion – The LPO's Renga ensemble and this year “The Caged Bird” from the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.Nikki was honoured to have her piece HUSH commissioned by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra featured at the 2012 Proms ( BBC TV) and more recently write for the great American singer, Kurt Elling and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.Recently she has been particularly busy - she was awarded the prestigious Ivors Academy Gold Badge and the Ivor Novello Award - winning the best large ensemble composition in 2021.Support the show
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by acclaimed actor, musician and activist Tam Dean Burn. Once dubbed 'The scariest actor in Scotland', Tam talks about how he saw acting as an escape route to possibility and how that vision evolved into a prolific career spanning nearly 50 years. From working with the likes of Steven Berkoff and Irving Welsh to his more recent work raising climate awareness with children Tam has always searched for meaning. He also talks openly about the life changing event that led him to re-valuate his perceptions around mental illness and how that has since informed his work. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tam initially saw acting as an escape from a troubled home life and difficult relationship with his mother, opening up a whole new world of possibilities. Punk music became an outlet for Tam's anger but he realised acting allowed him to channel his energy in a more constructive way through the discipline of performance. Working with directors like Steven Berkoff who celebrated working-class stories helped Tam find meaning and belief in more alternative, physical styles of theatre. Being stabbed by a mentally ill man led Tam to completely re-evaluate his perceptions around mental illness. The experience inspired Tam to create work aimed at understanding voices in people's heads, reducing stigma and supporting mental health. Tam uses daily meditation, yoga and tai chi to find calm, control his anger and recover from difficult situations. Performing climate crisis awareness shows for kids is now a major focus for Tam - helping shift perceptions on protecting the planet. BEST MOMENTS "I was the first person in my whole extended family that moved away from home without being married." "If I'd carried on doing Agatha Christie I would have dropped out, who knows where I would have ended up." "When you've got children, I don't know, then you just think, God, what is it going to be like for my daughter?" "He's been told by the voices that there was a paedophile ring of Scottish actors and I was the only one he recognised." "I felt immediately calm. I didn't freak out at all...it must have been a really sharp knife." "Forgiveness is the key to the kingdom of heaven." "Maybe I could make a series of podcasts with the interviews - podcasts are all about listening." "If life was based on forgiveness, we'd all be in an entirely different place." One of the finest up and coming Scottish Jazz musicians and composers takes to the road with Tune Up for his first ever nationwide tour - playing his own compositions with David Dunsmuir on guitar, Ross Hamilton on bass and a host of special guest appearances. Jazz musician Alyn Cosker has emerged as a regular on the Scottish jazz scene, known to most as the drummer with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and for his performances alongside numerous international jazz greats. Most recently, he stepped in to replace Paolo Vinaccia to great acclaim on a couple of dates on the Tune Up tour that featured Tommy Smith and Arild Anderson. So impressed was Tommy Smith, that he has agreed to guest on Alyn's own Tune Up tour this May. Cosker is also coming to light as a talented composer and this, his first nationwide tour, will co-incide with his debut album release, showcasing the Alyn Cosker Trio comprising electric guitarist David Dunsmuir and Ross Hamilton on bass. Special guest will also include Tommy Smith (tnr sax), Jason Rebello (pno), Paul Towndrow (alto/sop sax), Ryan Quigley (trumpet) & Maureen McMullan (vox). "This has been my first real outlet for composition, and it will be mainly my own stuff. There are a lot of styles going on within the trio, and I wanted to challenge myself." Alyn Cosker
Paul Towndrow Alto and Soprano Saxophonist, Composer, Educator, World Saxophone Competition finalist 2003 & 2004. Paul currently leads his own group, The Paul Towndrow Quartet, is a member of The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and has also performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The Sextet took off around Scotland in summer 2007 with Tune Up. This episode captures some of their unique, quirky, character.
