On November 8th, 1977 archaeologist Manolis Andronikos made public one of the greatest finds of all time—the royal Macedonian tombs at Aigai (modern day Vergina), including what is likely the tomb of Philipp II himself. This week, the guys walk through this remarkable story and frame it within the chaotic historical context of the decline of Athens and the rise of Macedon in the 4th century BC. Using David Grant's recent book, Unearthing the Family of Alexander the Great (Pen and Sword Military, 2019), Dave and Jeff address a number of the ongoing controversies surrounding the finds—why did these tombs survive while most others have been found looted? Is it really Philipp II in the larnax? If so, who is the mysterious “Scythian Queen” in the antechamber? Along the way, sample a bit of Demosthenes' Second Philippic, prepare yourself for Smarch weather, and soak up the inanities.

Have we achieved Artificial General Intelligence? MIT CSAIL Professor Manolis Kellis argues yes. Computers can do nearly every intellectual task that humans are capable of and are rapidly tackling the physical tasks. What does this mean for the future of AI integration, regulation, and development? Hear Professor Kellis' ideas about how businesses can incorporate LLMs (large language models) to minimize silos, why we shouldn't put up too many guardrails on AI technology, and how human-AI collaboration can lead to broader societal benefit, including healthcare. Irini Arabatzi is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and performer. Born in Thessaloniki, Greece, she began her music journey while growing up in Brussels. Inspired by the Greek records of her parents she began to absorb traditional folk sounds but also to discover jazz and improvisation during 12 years of piano classes.

Somehow this got away from Jimmy when Patrick Coppolino admitted that Manolis Zontanos was right and Back to the Future was the better movie. But he still found enough redeeming value in Hot Tub Time Machine to put up a spirited defence. And then Manolis starts definding it. Very funny episode with a couple of naturally funny people.

At our core, humans are storytellers. And books are one of the oldest technologies we use to document and preserve our stories. But the printed book has remained relatively unchanged for hundreds of years so it might just be ready for a makeover. In this episode, Greg Newby tells us the story of his friend Michael Hart who, roused by an impressive display of fireworks one 4th of July, invented the eBook. Then Manolis Kelaidis explains how he designed a new print/digital hybrid book that got the attention of Penguin publishing and big Silicon Valley investors. In 1971, more than 30 years before the first eReader, Michael Hart founded Project Gutenberg, the world's first electronic digital library. With the help of volunteers, he slowly transcribed literary works in the public domain into eBooks and shared them online. Librarians and publishers openly condemned Project Gutenberg and many thought the idea of reading books on a computer was downright wacky. The eBook marked the first major change to book technology since Gutenberg invented the printing press. The next big evolution is Manolis' bitbook. The bitbook is a printed, paper book with circuits embedded in the pages, connected by Bluetooth to nearby devices, posed to come alive with additional media to entirely reinvented the reading experience. For more information, visit setapp.com/podcast

Today, in honor of father's day, I would like to share my conversation with a good friend and colleague of mine, whose story is a perfect example of the importance of a role model and its importance to future success. In my opinion, there is no better role model than one's father. Someone you grew up with and looked up to since the day you were born. Someone that provides, protects, loves, and inspires you. A figure larger than life, your hero. As the son of Greek immigrants, Dr. Manolis Manolakakis grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey. He grew up with the basic and most important values; hard work and kindness, instilled in him by his father. According to him, it was his father, who taught him the meaning of perseverance and determination, and to always “do what it takes”.Manolis Manolakakis, DMD, FACS, is a dual board-certified cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgeon and the director at Advanced Facial Surgery in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and Greenwich Village in Manhattan, New York City. He currently runs a fellowship program in facial cosmetic surgery and inspires the new generation of surgeons to continue his legacy.
Manolis Angelakis runs tind.gr, a long-running Athens, Greece, screen printing shop that does graphic and textile printing, as well as experimental graphics with exotic inks, art prints, and displays for a range of clients in Europe. But it's his unique live screen printing adventures Andy MacDougall explores in this episode. Formulating special skin-friendly inks, and printing - printing - yes printing, food at an annual charity event. Learn how the Greeks bring squeegees – and chocolate covered crepes – to the people. And see images discussed in the podcast here.
