4. Art Blakey – “Moanin'” (1958) Blakey's “press roll thunder” en soulvolle drive: hét hard‑bop geluid. 5. Philly Joe Jones – “Two Bass Hit” (Miles Davis, 1958) Super strakke rudiments, dynamische fills, en meesterlijke controle. 6. Elvin Jones – “A Love Supreme: Pt II – Resolution” (John Coltrane, 1965) Golvende, spirituele storm aan polyritmiek. 7. Tony Williams – “Seven Steps to Heaven” (Miles Davis, 1963) Williams was 17 (!) en revolutionair in drive, vrijheid en cymbal‑articulatie. 8. Roy Haynes – “Snap Crackle” (1962) Zijn bijna elektronische “snap & crackle” stijl komt hier volledig tot recht. 9. 10. Steve Gadd – Intro van 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover 11. Steve Gadd – “Foam Home” (Steve Gadd Band – 70-Strong, 2015) Legendarische precisie, frasevorming en groove—drummer's favorite. 12. 1. Vroege jazz & New Orleans (1900–1920) De moderne drumkit ontstond in New Orleans toen slagwerkers verschillende percussie-instrumenten combineerden tot één set (o.a. bass drum, snare en bekkens).

Die gespielten Titel: Interpret:in: Titel (Album / Label) - Maria Schneider Orchestra: Allégresse (Allégresse / Enja) - Vienna Art Orchestra: Türkis (Fe & Males / Amadeo) - Ingrid Jensen: Dear John (Higher Grounds / Enja) - Ingrid Jensen: Touch Her Soft Lips and Part (Higher Grounds / Enja) - Darcy James Argue's Secret Society: Transit (Presents: Infernal Machines / New Amsterdam Records) - Ingrid Jensen: Foxy Trot (Invisible Sounds / Whirlwind Recordings) - Artemis: Sights Unseen (Arboresque / Blue Note)

The Later Days of Big Bands: From the Culture Desk Join co-hosts Joshua Michael Stewart & Scott Graves on a musical look at just what all those Big Band musicians were doing decades after the end of the Big Band Era. The popular culture phenomenon of swing music did not end when the record deals started drying up. The spectrum and synthesis of styles, the premium musicianship and the comradery between bands and fans continued to the present date. We bring you more than a dozen recordings in their whole from the seventies to now including mostly musicians and bands still very much alive. You'll experience the music of Buddy Rich, Clayton/Hamilton Big Band, Count Basie, The Either Orchestra and folks new to the scene like Omar Thomas. And my co-host put together a larger playlist for those of you who want to swing the night away! Listen Now

** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 36: Drummer, vocalist and bandleader Chuck Wansley. In the late 1970s, his band cut their teeth on the dance club circuit and opened for acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, Chic and Tavares, and during the early 1980s he landed gigs with Martha Reeves, Mary Wells and Phyllis Hyman. However, he is best known as a founding member of Warp 9, one of the first electro-hip hop groups, with two albums and six hit singles. Those tracks included “Nunk,” “Beatwave,” “Light Years Away” and “No Man Is an Island.” He also released a solo album in Japan, and more recently has been performing overseas as a big band jazz singer and entertainer. RECORDED JULY 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright.
