"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Send us a textEver wondered what makes performers tick? Neil Bett – actor, facilitator, coach, and one-sixth of an acapella sextet – takes us on a fascinating journey through the moments that shaped his creative path.Recorded in our brand new Future Leap Studios in Bristol, this conversation between old friends crackles with authenticity. Neil and host Chris Grimes trained together at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, giving them a shared language around performance and presence that elevates their exchange beyond mere reminiscence. The heart of the episode centers on Neil's transformative moment at age 12 when, during a school improvisation, he portrayed a punk rocker stuck in a lift. The uproarious laughter that followed revealed something profound – the power to affect others through performance. This revelation would shape his entire career and approach to creative expression.Neil's candor is refreshing as he shares wisdom gleaned from mentors like acting teacher Rudy Shelly, who bluntly told the cold-ridden student: "I don't give a shit how you feel, and neither does the audience." This lesson in professionalism remains a cornerstone of Neil's philosophy. Equally valuable was a colleague's advice to pursue opportunities that provide an "emotional kick" rather than just career advancement – a phrase that has guided Neil's decisions ever since.Beyond performance insights, we discover delightful surprises: Neil's obsession with marmalade-making (continuing his mother's tradition), his fascination with birds of prey, and how the smell of pastries never fails to stop him in his tracks. His reflections on Shakespeare's "to thine own self be true" reveal a man who has found authenticity through both creative expression and family life. The episode concludes with Neil's acapella rendition of Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" – a perfect musical embodiment of the conversation's themes. Whether you're a performer yourself or simply curious about the creative mind, you'll find something to inspire you in Neil's journey.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. George Russell was one of the foremost composer/arrangers in Modern Jazz and always a forward thinker. He recorded under his own name in the mid-50's but didn't form an actual working band until 1960 when he put together his Sextet. He recorded for Decca and the independent label, Riverside Records and until he left the US for Europe in the mid-60's. it was a golden and productive period for Russell. This is a very special album and the only one where the great Eric Dolphy who is heard here on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, was a member of Russell's Sextet. The album was recorded on May 8,1961 in New York for Riverside and titled "Ezz-Thetics". The personnel of the band includes Don Ellis on trumpet, Dave Baker on trombone, Dolphy, bassist Steve Swallow, drummer Joe Hunt and Russell on piano. George Russell arranged all the tunes and composed 4 of the 7 tunes here. Two unique interpretations are included here and scored by Russell they are: Miles Davis' "Nardis" and Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight". This is a special album as are all of Russell's recordings with the Sextet but the presence of Eric Dolphy makes this one extra special. "Ezz-Thetics" is the Jazz Feature tonight.

SynopsisIf he hadn't turned composer, Johannes Brahms might have made an excellent travel agent. He was in the habit of spending his summer vacations working on his music and consequently was always on the lookout for scenic spots and comfortable rooms at a decent price. In the summer of 1865, Brahms rented rooms from a certain widow Becker in Lichtental near Baden-Baden. The rooms offered a wonderful view of a mountain hillside covered with fir trees — and the rent was irresistibly low. “I came. I saw. I rented,” Brahms wrote to a friend.Brahms composed his String Sextet No. 2 there, between jolts of bracing coffee in the morning and afternoon hikes up the aforementioned hillside. Not surprisingly, this sextet turned out to be one of his happiest and most genial chamber works. But on today's date in 1867 at the sextet's first performance in Vienna, the critic of the Wiener Zeitung heard desert sands rather than shady forests, and wrote: “We are seized with a kind of foreboding whenever Herr Johannes Brahms, this new John the Baptist, emerges from the wilderness. This prophet makes us quite disconsolate with his impalpable, vertiginous tone-vexations, pleasing to neither body nor soul.”Music Played in Today's ProgramJohannes Brahms (1833-1897): String Sextet No. 2; L'Archibudelli Sony Classical 68252

Basie's "New Testament" band of the early 1950's was a classic group that recorded for Clef. At the same time he did several Nonet, Sextet and Quintet sides featuring some of his prime soloists (Joe Newman, Paul Quinichette, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis) and guests (Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich).

Rudy Williams was a journeyman sax player who stylistically crossed between swing and bebop. The son of legendary/notorious bandleader Fess Williams and the cousin of Charles Mingus, Williams is here heard on alto sax with a pickup group put together by Baron Timme Rosenkrantz in 1939 (with Don Byas, Tyree Glenn, Rex Stewart, Russell Procope, Billy Kyle, Walter Page and Jo Jones), the Savoy Sultans (his regular band from 1937-1941 or so), a Don Byas group (with Charlie Shavers and Clyde Hart), Tadd Dameron's Sextet (with Fats Navarro, Allan Eager, Kenny Clarke and Curly Russell), Bennie Green's Sextet (on baritone, with Teddy Brannon and Lockjaw Davis) and the Howard McGhee Korean All-Stars (on tenor, with J.J. Johnson and Skeeter Best). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support
