George Russell was one of the foremost composer/arrangers in Modern Jazz and always a forward thinker. He recorded under his own name in the mid-50's but didn't form an actual working band until 1960 when he put together his Sextet. He recorded for Decca and the independent label, Riverside Records and until he left the US for Europe in the mid-60's. it was a golden and productive period for Russell. This is a very special album and the only one where the great Eric Dolphy who is heard here on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, was a member of Russell's Sextet. The album was recorded on May 8,1961 in New York for Riverside and titled "Ezz-Thetics". The personnel of the band includes Don Ellis on trumpet, Dave Baker on trombone, Dolphy, bassist Steve Swallow, drummer Joe Hunt and Russell on piano. George Russell arranged all the tunes and composed 4 of the 7 tunes here. Two unique interpretations are included here and scored by Russell they are: Miles Davis' "Nardis" and Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight". This is a special album as are all of Russell's recordings with the Sextet but the presence of Eric Dolphy makes this one extra special. "Ezz-Thetics" is the Jazz Feature tonight.

Ra Kalam Bob Moses spent his youth growing up in New York City and living in the same building as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Elvin Jones, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. This early experience had a profound effect on this young musician. Ra Kalam would go on to work with jazz luminaries such as Gary Burton, Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow, Jack DeJohnette, Tisziji Muñoz and many others. He was also a member of the group The Free Spirits in the 1960's, considered one of the first Jazz rock bands ever. Many were introduced to Ra Kalam's drumming by way of Pat Metheny‘s very first solo record Bright Size Life in 1976 with Jaco Pastorius on bass. Ra Kalam is also a composer and leader on many recorded projects, going back decades. In this episode, Ra Kalam talks about: His thoughts on the documentary being made about him Growing up in the same building as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Elvin Jones, Rahsaan Roland Kirk in New York Getting beyond your tendencies and patterns His relationship with teacher and musical collaborator, Tisziji Muñoz The origin of his name “Ra Kalam” Reconciling his own legacy Upcoming recordings
Face to Face, Nikki's new album is out today! As a founder member of the hugely innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra in the early 90s, Nikki Iles came to prominence working with musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Vince Mendoza, Mark Anthony Turnage, Kenny Wheeler and Mike Gibbs.Mike subsequently booked her for one of her first recording dates with great American musicians, Steve Swallow and Bob Moses on the CD “By The Way” on AH HUM records. For many years, Nikki served a lengthy apprenticeship in the North of England playing with the cream of British and American jazz such as Peter King, Iain Ballamy, Art Farmer, Peter King ,Tina May ,Tim Garland and Jim Mullen. Many of these relationships were re- kindled later ,when after a car accident, Nikki finally decided to make the move to London in 1998. Here she joined the groups and toured and recorded with musicians such as Steve Arguelles, Mick Hutton, Martin Speake, Stan Sulzmann and Julian Arguelles and Norma Winstone .Several awards followed with the BT British Jazz Award and an IAJE Award in America for services to Jazz. Although well known as a pianist, composition still remains a major part of her musical life. The breadth of Nikki's artistic vision has led her to disregard the arbitrary boundaries of the jazz scene and most notably, commissions have included a collaboration with American dancer Mimi Cichanowicz , the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Finland, “A Gentle Prayer “ - London Sinfonietta , “Red Ellen” - Tim Garland's Northern Underground Band, “Carillion – The LPO's Renga ensemble and this year “The Caged Bird” from the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers.Nikki was honoured to have her piece HUSH commissioned by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra featured at the 2012 Proms ( BBC TV) and more recently write for the great American singer, Kurt Elling and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.Recently she has been particularly busy - she was awarded the prestigious Ivors Academy Gold Badge and the Ivor Novello Award - winning the best large ensemble composition in 2021.Support the show

Artistically ambitious, a rare woman in a male dominated scene, taking the road less travelled, or even the road never travelled, and with her feet well on the ground business-wise side to ensure her artistic independence, Carla Bley played a key role in giving today's music scene the shape we know. This week we concentrate on some of her signature compositions, focusing on her Church side, her Big Band side, her catchy side, her electric side, and some of the musicians that embraced her work early on. The playlist features Conjure, Kip Hanrahan; Orrin Evans; Howard Tate; Masabumi Kikuchi, Gil Evans; Espoo Big Band; George Russell; Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley, Steve Swallow; Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Paul Bley, Bruce Ditmas; and John McLaughlin. Gary Burton, the multiple-Grammy-winning jazz vibraphonist has been an influential force on the vibraphone — the Burton grip, the technique he invented to play pianistically with 4-mallets, bears his name. He is also an important figure in jazz education, through a 33-year affiliation with the Berklee College of Music in Boston. As a bandleader he made what is arguably the first jazz fusion album, in the 1960s, and has since mentored many artists including the guitarists Pat Metheny and Julian Lage. He also mentored composers such as Michael Gibbs, Steve Swallow, and Carla Bley, recording their music on his many successful albums. His long collaborative history with the pianist Chick Corea resulted in 6 Grammys and are regarded as one of the highest examples of the jazz duet. In 2016 Gary Burton was recognized as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, the highest honor reserved for a jazz musician. But for me, I will always be grateful to have had him as a teacher when I was a student at the Berklee College of Music from 1971 to 1975. As you are about to hear, Gary explains things extremely clearly, so that information that is new and sophisticated seems logical and inevitable. He was also very encouraging to me as a composer, and we spent many happy sessions looking at my tunes and discussing the possibilities. In 2004 I wrote and hosted a radio series for the BBC, “Inside Improvisation”. Enjoy my interview with the great, Gary Burton. GARY BURTON – Rare Interview and Free Improvisation Masterclass!
