We all hope for a lot of things: nice weather, another Chiefs Super Bowl, or the perfect vacation. But what do we hope IN? Jesus says that our hope and treasure determine the safety of our heart, but how do we know where to hope? In Colossians 1:1-14, the Apostle Paul writes that we can have a hope in heaven that leads to a fully pleasing life, both to God and to us. Come check out Week 1 of Colossians as Nick Swearingen takes us through what it means to put our hope in Jesus and His kingdom.
The church in Colossae in danger of syncretism, which is the combination of several religious practices. The believers in this church were in danger of losing the truth of Christ by forsaking the truth of the Gospel and adopting practices from other religions. Paul wants to remind them of the Gospel that they first heard from Epaphras (v. 5, 7) and so Paul begins to lay out the appropriate responses to the Gospel in verses 9-12. He finishes this section off by reminding them of the truth that we all need to remember each and every day. That God has transferred us from one kingdom to another — the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of the Son. The question for us is, which kingdom are we living for today? "We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people."
There’s no question we are living in tumultuous times. Our hope should not be in our government, our culture, or our possessions. God says to fix our eyes on things above (Colossians 3:2). As followers of Jesus our true home is in heaven – we are merely passing through this temporal and chaotic world. How, then, do we live? Listen as Pastor Jeremy teaches four ways from Colossians 1:1-14 to live in this “in between” time – the time we are living in the midst of trouble and toil on earth and yet longing for our citizenship in heaven: • Increase in knowledge (v 9) • Bearing fruit of hope and peace (v10) • Being strengthened according to His power (v11) • Giving thanks (v12)

Over the next few weeks we will be thinking over the core values of our church, reminding ourselves of who we are and what we do as followers of Jesus Christ. Our first value is, GOSPEL: The Gospel is at the heart of all we say and do’. What do we mean by this? We tend to think ‘the gospel’ is a message we share with others; something we believe in order to be saved. But the gospel is more than that. It wasn’t meant to just change your eternity, but your everyday life. It’s not just about getting into heaven, but about growing more and more into the likeness of Jesus Christ. In other words, it shapes your everyday life. But, how does it impact your daily life? How does the gospel help you deal with everyday life?
In our consumer-driven culture, we are surrounded by options and choices. When it comes to faith, there is really only one true option. When it comes to the church, we can only have one message. In the opening sermon of a series through the book of Colossians, we look at how the Preeminence of Jesus Christ must not be understated.

Colossians 1:1-14 (NRSV) 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae:Grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3 In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. 7 This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow-servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8 and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 9 For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The focus of Pentecost is on spiritual growth. Christians grow in their stewardship through a better understanding of what Jesus taught as well as teachings about Him. For the next four weeks, we will be considering St. Paul's letter to us as he writes to the Colossian Church. Even though the reason Paul writes is to address the false teachers who have made their way into the congregation, you would never know it reading only Chapter 1. Paul opens with the encouragement giving to us through the death and resurrection of Christ. Jesus Christ is God's plan of salvation for all people. Intuitively, Paul chooses not to confront the false teachers head on. Instead, he reminds his readers of the gift and impact of Jesus's unconditional love and grace. It is the truth of God's plan of salvation in Jesus Christ that opens mind and heart in such a way that spotting and addressing the false teaching is clearly seen and confronted.
In this introduction to the new series in Colossians, we see that it is our shared hope in the eventual and unavoidable reality of the reconnection of heaven and earth that provides us energy and unity today.

Our modern era is not unique in its fascination with angels and the spirit world. The converts to Christ at Colossae also had a strong interest in the subject, but some of them allowed their interest to distract them from their newfound faith in Jesus Christ.
