Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester return for another episode of Hyperspace Theories discussing the Ahsoka Disney+ series, specifically the second act of the story: Part Three “Time to Fly,” Part Four “Fallen Jedi,” and Part Five “Shadow Warrior.” Often Star Wars is at its best when it advances not only the character arcs of its principals, but also the mythology of the franchise, The episodes of Ahsoka, and “Shadow Warrior” especially, mark a great success in that tradition. As we mentioned in our previous episode discussing the two-part premiere, Ahsoka has excelled at representation and inclusion, particularly compared to Star Wars' less than stellar historical track record. In late September, the Women's Committee of the Critic's Choice Association (CCA) announced that it would be honoring Ahsoka with the Seal of Female Empowerment in Entertainment (SOFEE), which “recognizes outstanding new films and television series that illuminate the female experience and perspective through authentically told female-driven stories.” The press release noted that Ahsoka had achieved “a perfect score in the numerical formula” which evaluates whether nominated projects “have a prominent female character arc, give female characters at least equal screen time to male characters, have female leaders behind the scenes, and pass elements highlighted in the Bechdel test.” Congratulations to Carrie Beck, Dave Filoni, and the other leaders behind Ahsoka for their contributions to making this kind of recognition possible for a Star Wars project. The second act of Ahsoka places the characterization focus on the titular character and the personal and spiritual journey she undertakes. “Time to Fly” and “Fallen Jedi” reveal the ways in which Ahsoka Tano, despite her age and experience, still faces the emotional legacy of her past and still struggles to follow herself the Jedi lessons she imparts to Sabine. In “Shadow Warrior” her near-death experience compels her to face her deepest traumas and fears – and to finally truly confront her feelings toward former Master, Anakin Skywalker, and his fate as Darth Vader, and what it means for Ahsoka to have been trained by him. After her rescue and return to land on Seatos, she has rediscovered her true self and made the transition, inspired by Tolkein's Gandalf, from Ahsoka the Gray to Ahsoka the White. In the Hero's Journey monomyth described by Joseph Campbell, a recurring topic on Hyperspace Theories, the Belly of the Whale marks a key metamorphosis from the hero's ordinary existence to their extraordinary adventure. For Ahsoka, her ascension to her Wizard's Journey requires such a transformation – and its culmination is indicated, literally, by her passage into the open mouth of a gigantic, ancient purgill. These episodes of Ahsoka also present interesting perspectives on the Force, and what it means to be a Jedi, through other characters including Sabine, Hera, Jacen Syndulla, Huyang, and Baylan Skoll. All of these ideas are juxtaposed against Ahsoka's concurrent personal journey, and all of them pay off in the third act of the series. Check back soon for our next episode of Hyperspace Theories analyzing those episodes in depth. Priester: Twitter @RedPenofLex; email Lex@fangirlblog.com The Ahsoka series premiered and aired on Disney+ during the concurrent ongoing strikes against Disney and other major Hollywood studios by unions representing the writers (WGA) and actors (SAG-AFTRA) who are indispensable to their productions. Accordingly, neither Filoni nor any of the actors in Ahsoka could participate in promotional interviews or other marketing for the series (although they appear in material previously recorded, such as interviews at Star Wars Celebration in April, that is shared by Disney or entertainment journalists). Aside from its value in raising the visibility of the series to the prospective audience, such interviews with talent often provide fascinating insight into the storytelling process, characterization and motivations, and the themes and values underlying a series. We are disappointed that the studios have denied the talent the opportunity to participate in the excitement of the series launch, and the fans and audience the ability to share in their enthusiasm and learn from it, through their unwillingness to agree to reasonable terms relating to changing technology, shifts in production and distribution within the industry, and a fair sharing of billions of dollars in global profits with those who make those profits possible in the first place. Despite the ongoing strikes, the unions have not called for a boycott of the studios: they encourage fans and audience to watch newly released films and series (to demonstrate their value and profitability) and have clarified that non-promotional activities such as reviews, criticism, and analysis are not inconsistent with the terms of the strike. At FANgirl Blog and Hyperspace Theories, we intend to discuss Star Wars (and other projects from the struck studios) in solidarity with the unions and in conformity with their approved official guidance.
In the 5th chapter of the Ahsoka series, our titular heroine finds herself in the World Between Worlds, a mystical plane of existence beyond space and time. In this realm she encounters the spirit of her former master Anakin Skywalker, who still has a few teachings to impart. Meanwhile, General Hera Syndulla mounts a desperate search for Ahsoka in the waters of Seatos, aided by the enhanced abilities of her Force-sensitive son Jacen. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pageturnerstheywerenot/message

WHAT AN EPISODE! We travel to the World Between Worlds in Star Wars Ahsoka Part 5 Shadow Warrior. We loved this episode and chat all about it in our latest podcast.Ahsoka Part 5 "Shadow Warrior" SynopsisExecutive Producers - Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson and Carrie BeckHead Writer: Dave FiloniPart 5 Written by: Dave FiloniPart 5 Directed by: Dave FiloniHera Syndulla arrives on Seatos where she finds no trace of Ahsoka nor Sabine Wren. Alerted by a noise at the Henge she finds only Huyang holding Sabine's helmet recalling that he told them both to stay together. While the X-Wings sweep the nearby forest for Sabine and Ahsoka, Jacen Syndulla senses lightsabers clashing above the noise of the crashing waves as he senses Ahsoka's presence in the World Between Worlds and reveals to his mother Hera and Huyang his own connection with the Force. Hera orders the X-Wings to begin sweeping the coastline for Ahsoka. In the World Between Worlds, Anakin explains to Ahsoka that he had been watching her through the Force and deduces that her loss with Baylon Skoll is partially due to her unresolved guilt over the events that drove them apart. He is here to continue their training and gives her the choice to “live or die” as his lightsaber ignites. As they duel Ahsoka has the bridge taken from beneath her and falls into a battle where she relives fragments of her past with Anakin during the Clone Wars. But Ahsoka doesn't want to simply be a Jedi of war and refuses Anakin's teachings, determined to not be held to the legacy of her Master's past nor those of his Masters from before. Her refusal leads to another duel between them, which Ahsoka wins and chooses to live, accepting that she wasn't part of the reason for Anakin's downfall. Ahsoka is recovered by Hera's crew after being picked up on Chopper's scanner. Once she has recovered she uses her powers to learn that Sabine is with Baylon Skol. As she contemplates what to do she sees the Purrgil overhead and realises there is another way to find the Pathway to Peridia. At the same time Hera is contacted by Mon Mothma who informs her that New Republic forces are en route to take her and Ahsoka into custody. As a New Republic Fleet led by Captain Girard arrives, X-Wing pilot Carson Teva is tasked with holding them up as Ahsoka force-connects to a pod of Purrgil to get them to take her and Huyang to Ezra and Sabine. Syndulla, Jacen, and Chopper stay behind, with Hera likely to be stripped of her rank at the hands of the Senate for the unauthorised mission, as the New Republic Defense Fleet watches the large pod of Purrgil jump to hyperspace with Ahsoka and Huyang.Star Wars Ahsoka Cast Part 5Ashoka Tano played by Rosario DawsonSabine Wren played by Natasha Liu BordizzoBaylan Skoll played by Ray StevensonGeneral Hera Syndulla played by Mary Elizabeth WinsteadShin Hati played by Ivanna SakhnoLady Morgan Elsbeth played by Diana Lee InosantoHuyang voiced by David TennantMon Mothma played by Genevieve O'ReillyCaptain Carson Teva played by Paul Sun-Hyung LeeC1-1OP (Chopper) voiced by Dave FiloniJacen Syndulla played by Evan WhittenWith Anakin Skywalker played by Hayden ChristensenA Return to a Galaxy Far Far AwayWe will discuss:- Our Top 3 Points (or Saber Points) of the episode- Notes, Quotes and referencesThe Ahsoka Cantina QuizDuring each podcast we'll ask a question about each episode in our Ahsoka Cantina Quiz. Darth Amin and Darth Cornpuzzle guide you through a breezy episode that featured some jedi training, a senatorial conference call and a dogfight over Seatos in an episode heavily reminiscent of A New Hope. They also address the disparity between the experienced an inexperienced when it comes to understanding the show, the severity of lightsaber wounds, and Amin translates the starmap from the credits. Finally, there is some heavy theorizing about the identity of one of the masked characters in the show, and what that reveal could portend for the series and future of the Star Wars Galaxy. Saber training, an epic space battle, and purrgil oh my! This episode of Ahsoka may be remembered for it's epic space battle sequence but the third episode continues to explore the idea that the Force resides in everyone, we just have to quite our mind and find the discipline to wield it no matter our talent level. But training and contemplation are cut short as Ahsoka, Sabine and Huyang make their way to Seatos while Morgan Elsbeth's hired mercenaries are in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, Hera tries to get approval from the New Republic Senate Committee to investigate the Denab system to find further proof that Thrawn is alive and attempting to return. Frank, Brandon and Kevin discuss all this as well as dive into some Marrok theories and speculate on a bevy of other topics. Regrouping with the fleet, Ahsoka meets with General Hera Syndulla, but Huyang reveals that the star map is locked. Syndulla advises Ahsoka to go to her former Padawan, Sabine Wren, to use her skills to help unlock the map.On the planet Lothal, the tense relationship between Ahsoka and Sabine is palpable and Wren takes the star map to unlock it back at her home outside the city where she is ambushed by two assassin droids and the apprentice Shin who steal it. As Sabine tries to stop Shin a lightsaber duel ensues and Shin seriously wounds Sabine. In episode 2 After the attack on Sabine, she recovers at Lothal's medical facility and soon puts her tech skills to use as she hacks one of the assassin droid's memories. This second episode was awesome! We have a new galaxy to explore in Star Wars with new villains and powers beyond the Jedi and Sith. Baylan says that galaxy, Peridea has power that we have never seen before. I believe this is a galaxy with a new set of rules. New people. New powers. Powers beyond the force, perhaps Magic. I think it's absolutely brilliant how Dave has created another galaxy, many of them in fact, and is introducing new civilizations that make even Baylan, a powerful Jedi who survived Order 66, amazed. Ahsoka and Hera observe the hyperdrives being dismantled on Corellia to be repurposed to the New Republic, as they learn that ex Imperials work for the new republic, still on pay roll. They were never fired, they all kept their same job just no longer under the Empire. They talk about Sabine becoming Ahsoka's apprentice again, and Ahsoka is reluctant. A medical droid attends to Sabine's wounds, this is the same class of droid that worked on Anakin as he transformed into Darth Vader. Huyang walks in and tells Sabine that Ezra's lightsaber is actually now hers because she has modified it to her liking. He hands it to her after some encouraging words, and she is going to get serious now instead of being such a rebellious brat. We learn that these dismantled imperial fleet ships when sold are profitable to fund many different republic projects among other things. As Hera notices the hyperdrive core outside being built, they're told 9 have been built. This core is WAY too big to be used for any new republic ship. The information is classified and General Hera Syndulla is being denied. Ahsoka asks about the HK assassin droids that could be repurposed here, as they learn a droid of this class does exist here, currently departing on that transport. The traitorous workers scream FOR THE EMPIRE and attack Ahsoka and Hera, as Hera races for the Ghost and Ahsoka jumps out the window facing Marrok. The inquisitor loyal to Baylan it seems, as he holds a red lightsaber. They fight as Hera chases the hyperdrive core being transported. Chopper tries to find the tracker, as he throws a literal big LEGO piece out, finally finding the tracker. This is hilarious. Marrock can't take Ahsoka and ends up running away to his or her ship. I have no clue who this is. It could be Barris Offee I think, but I don't know. Ashoka dodges his lightsaber as it returns to him, she's in control of all emotions and can sense everything. She's very samurai. Very one with the force. Sabine heads back home, lays her Mandalorian armor out like a Samurai, kneels before it which is very ritual like, and cuts her hair. The imperial loyalists on Corellia are arrested. Also, for a fun fact, Corellia is where Han Solo was raised. Sabine sends a holo to Ahsoka of her in armor. She's ready. We're now at the very end of Rebels where she dawns the armor, observing the mural of the ghost crew, touching Ezra's face, turning to see Ahsoka there to pick her up. We're now all caught up and ready to find Ezra…and…THRAWN. Huyang informs them Hera Syndulla has tracked the ship, they're in Denab system, in orbit around the planet Seatos. As the hyperdrive cores are being put together, we can see this is HUGE. Clearly something big enough for a massive ship to be launched into hyperspace…or perhaps…open a portal using the power of the hyperdrive cores. Learn more about your ad choices.
