Cindy Esliger talks about the double-edged sword that niceness can be in this episode. The pressure to be nice in the corporate world can feel overwhelming but forced niceness can lead to self-sacrifice and the impression of being easily manipulated. Being kind is a far better goal than being nice and Cindy explains why that is and how to pursue kindness over being nice. Cindy outright states that “niceness is overrated” and then delves into why that is. Niceness often comes at the expense of being real, honest, and kind. Niceness is about appearances and is surface level. It means keeping things pleasant even when it betrays our own feelings or needs. Kindness, however, digs deeper. Kindness is showing up for people, and not just in easy moments. It's caring enough to tell someone an uncomfortable truth. And kindness is compassionate without being a doormat. The vast differences between working in a culture of nice and working in a culture of kindness are explored by Cindy. Kindness is generous, fair, honest, and vulnerable. Niceness might say positive things but kindness does positive things. The difference between simply keeping things cordial at the expense of ourselves and our goals and finding kind ways to tell truths and remain true to ourselves is the point of this episode. Cindy highlights the benefits of kindness in the workplace and shares advice on how to let go of being nice and pursue kindness instead. Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Being Kind in the Corporate WorldAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

In this episode, host Christian Taylor sits down with Emmy-nominated editor and producer Evan Wise, ACE, to delve into his career journey and unique approach to documentary filmmaking. Evan shares his path from a rebellious skate punk in New Jersey to becoming a highly respected editor, working on acclaimed series like HBO's The Circus and Q: Into the Storm. The conversation turns to his latest project, Chimp Crazy, a four-part HBO series that explores the complex world of primates. Evan offers a behind-the-scenes look at Chimp Crazy, discussing the creative and technical challenges of editing a real-time documentary. He emphasizes the importance of finding a compelling story arc, balancing multiple perspectives, and allowing the audience to interpret the narrative independently. He also shares his unique workflow, which involves producing, writing, and editing simultaneously—an approach that fosters flexibility and creativity. Throughout the episode, Evan provides valuable insights and practical advice for aspiring editors. He highlights essential skills like negotiation, teamwork, and self-advocacy, offering listeners an inside view of the collaborative and often intense world of documentary editing. Building relationships with experienced editors and filmmakers is invaluable for growth. Film school offers resources but isn't necessary for success in the industry. Starting in entry-level roles, like logger or assistant editor, can lead to an editing career. High-profile projects and recognition, like Emmy nominations, can open new doors. Creating a series involves tailoring the format, episode length, and story to the footage available. Presenting multiple perspectives lets the audience form their own opinions. Filming, writing, and editing at the same time allows for creative, flexible storytelling. Creative problem-solving makes scenes more engaging and visually dynamic. Negotiation skills and self-advocacy are crucial for an editor's success. Building positive relationships and being kind to others is essential in the editing world. Send us a textWelcome to the Country Proud Living Podcast, I am your host LoriLynn! It is good to recognize those in your life that have your best interest at heart and those that don't. When you are on a journey of improving your lot in life some will not like how growth looks on you. They will try to keep you where they would like you to be and will not be supportive. The worst part as they may seem to support you when in actuality they don't.  Learn to note the difference. I am not saying to drop all your relationships but to be aware of those who have your back and those that don't. Sorry to say that a lot of times this is even your relatives. Salt looks like sugar as they say! You need to be your own advocate and not expect others to advocate for you. It is your responsibility and a form of self-respect to do so.Don't just listen to what people say, watch what they do. Actions speak louder than words. Observe my friend and you will start to see things more clearly.  Our lives are greatly affected by who we choose to surround ourselves with, and spotting someone who doesn't necessarily have your best interest at heart is a critical skill when learning to foster your own happiness and emotional evolution.Being NICE is when you are polite to people and treat people well. Being KIND is when you care about people and show you care. If you pay attention you will recognize this difference in how the people you surround yourself with behave. You'll also find ways you can improve to spread more loving kindness to others in your life. One of the less discussed but equally significant aspects of relationships is their role in personal growth and development.  Friends and family often act as mirrors, reflecting our strengths and weaknesses, thus enabling us to understand ourselves better. They challenge us, celebrate our successes, and support us through failures. Welcome to the Country Proud Living Podcast, I'm your host LoriLynn. How does gender programming affect the mental load? All of this to say that women are taught from an early age that our worth and value comes from the house we keep and the kids we raise. Dads are taught that their job is done as soon as they've provided shelter and money for the family. What this looks like in Women: Programmed to think self worth comes from the house we keep and the kids we raiseAre taught to be the caretakers (therefore we prioritize this within our do to list)Nice vs Kind: Being nice is when you are polite to people and treat people well. Being kind is when you care about people and show you care."Being Nice" means we avoid confrontation and is dishonest. Kind would be honest but often uncomfortableConfrontation in relationships feels like it could be the end rather than an opportunity to understand more or accept differencesNice leads to guilt over having our own needsWe police our own behavior:Tone of voice (harshest for women of color who battle the “angry black woman” trope in all areas of life)If we ask for something, say at work, we risk being labeled “aggressive”Nice is transactional but “kind” positions us as worthy to give and receive kindnessOur time and work is seen as less valuable than when men can contribute - both at home and in the office. Women are often seen as multi-taskers that it's part of their personalityif being a “multi-tasker” was a personality trait, we would see it spread across genders. But as it stands, women are the ones being assigned with this label. What programming looks like in men:Men are programmed to believe their worth comes from providing for the family. Once those jobs are complete, they deserve to be cared for. Men are raised to be:BreadwinnersProtectorsHold jobs that are more highly valuedDisconnected - emotions are weaknessesBut,Women are seen as “right” when it comes to the safety of the (shared) childrenIn a study, young men supported gender equality in theory. But many held on to traditional ideas about gender roles. They saw men as “breadwinners” or “protectors” and women as “carers” and felt that societal attitudes hadn't changed dramatically. One of the ways we reinforce gendered behavior is by focusing on economics. If one partner earns more money than the other, we tell ourselves that the partner who earns less or works fewer hours has more time for household work. Each week, according to Pew, mothers spend nearly twice as long as fathers doing unpaid domestic work. Men are simply not taught to look at the things that we look at because remember the mental load is largely anticipating and monitoring the outcomes, the shit end of the process to do and that's how gender programming contributes to the mental load. when women say they're solely charged with handling their child's well-being, including being attentive to their emotions and relationships, it can lead to lower satisfaction with their partner and their life, as well as feelings of emptiness. That included whether the women felt unconditionally loved and accepted as well as how they viewed intimacy with their partners. Even when taking such variables into account, Luthar found that being solely responsible for a child's emotional development was negatively related to women's well-being and satisfaction with their relationship.Stereotypical expectations about what constitutes women's and men's work are not simply the outmoded relics of past generations. Research shows they persist even among

Creating an Easement by Being Nice to your Neighbors (LA 1586) Transcript: Steven Butala: Steve and Jill here. Jill DeWit: Hi. Steven Butala: Welcome to the land academy show, entertaining land investment talk. I'm Steven Jack Butala. Jill DeWit: And I'm Jill Dewitt broadcasting from the valley of the sun today. Steven Butala: Today Jill and I talk about creating an easement by simply being nice to your neighbors. Jill DeWit: Okay. This is confusing. An easement means I have access, preferably legal and physical, to go somewhere. An easement means it's the legal paperwork, as necessary, to access a property. Steven Butala: So I'll give a full-blown examples in the mid of the show, but this solves a landlocked property. Jill DeWit: I just have to ask. I'm so confused. I'm not confused. I'm just saying that- Steven Butala: Oh, you're asking for everybody- Jill DeWit: No. Yeah. Steven Butala: If you have a landlocked piece of property and there's a neighbor's property on the road, on a county road, let's say, and some of your [inaudible 00:01:00] sends it back to you and says, "Heck yes, I will sell you my incredibly valuable property for a tiny small amount of money, because I know there's no access." Steven Butala: And I'll explain how you can get access by baking a cake and showing up at somebody's store. Before we get into it, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community, it's free. Don't forget to subscribe on the Land Academy YouTube channel and comment on the shows you like. Jill DeWit: Aaron wrote, "Has anyone figured out how to integrate their website with an e-signature service to automate purchase agreement signing? Use case looks like receive letter. He puts like the little terminology in there without- Steven Butala: This is a code- Jill DeWit: Website URL. Steven Butala: His case looks like receive letter. Go to website URL in letter, enter reference number, digitally sign their PA, just trying to think about how to reduce the friction of signing and sending back a purchase agreement. Jill DeWit: This is kind of cool. This is a really good idea. Steven Butala: Well, I think it's a brilliant idea. It'll never work. Jill DeWit: Why? Steven Butala: So let's talk about this for a second. I want to make a kind of a big deal about this. There's a lot of technical people in our group, me included. I'm a very technical person and I'm hugely interested in making things easier and faster and more profitable. And one of the ways that you do that now, maybe the way, is through tech and technology improvements in databases and all this. And so Aaron obviously has a tech background or just knows about it. And so there's a lot of ways you can automate this and make this easy. And there's a lot of people who have come and gone in our group from a tech background, there's a lot of people in our group right now that have a core tech background in their W2 jobs, very successful, walking into this environment saying, "Oh no, we're going to make this whole thing an app. We're going to automate the entire system and we're going to take control over US land." Steven Butala: And so that's the extreme and Aaron, I'm not picking on you at all. I think this is a brilliant idea. I'm serious. But what you're missing here and what I think a lot of tech people miss, again, it's not a criticism at all. It's not like I'm talking about California right now. This is not a criticism. It's a backwards compliment. I'm not sure that you understand this customer. Do you think that most of the people that you sell property to, or buy property from, I'm sorry, are going to go onto a website, click on some stuff and sign it that way? Jill DeWit: No, that's true. Steven Butala: So Jill's right. They're not tech savvy. They're not set up for that. They want you to do it for them. They're asking you- Jill DeWit: kind of the point- Steven Butala:
