Host Dave Sobel welcomes Dennis O'Shea, CEO of Mobile Mentor, a managed services provider (MSP) with a unique background in mobile technology. Dennis shares insights from his extensive experience in the industry, particularly focusing on the generational differences in attitudes toward data security and privacy. He highlights how younger generations, especially Generation Z, have a more relaxed approach to sharing personal information, influenced by their social media habits, contrasting sharply with the more privacy-conscious attitudes of older generations. The conversation shifts to the evolving landscape of device usage in the workplace, where mobile devices are becoming increasingly prevalent. Dennis recounts his journey from working at Nokia to founding Mobile Mentor, where he initially focused on helping businesses adopt mobile technology. As Microsoft introduced Microsoft 365, Dennis recognized the need for comprehensive security across various device platforms, leading Mobile Mentor to expand its services to include endpoint security for a diverse range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops.Dennis also discusses the impact of regional regulations on data security practices, particularly comparing the stringent privacy laws in Australia and New Zealand to the more relaxed regulatory environment in the United States. He notes that organizations in regulated markets tend to take security more seriously, often having dedicated budgets and personnel for security, while those in unregulated markets may adopt a more casual approach. This disparity highlights the importance of understanding local regulations and their influence on organizational security practices. As the episode concludes, Dennis emphasizes the critical need for organizations to establish robust data governance frameworks, especially in light of the increasing integration of AI technologies. He warns that many organizations are unprepared for the challenges posed by AI, particularly regarding data classification and protection. By automating basic IT operations, organizations can free up resources to focus on data governance, ultimately positioning themselves to leverage AI effectively in the future. Denis and Shikirah discussed the issue of companies underutilizing productivity tools, specifically focusing on the benefits of going passwordless. Denis explained that many organizations require employees to manage multiple passwords, which can be inefficient and less secure. He advocated for the use of biometrics and multi-factor authentication instead, as they are faster, more secure, and eliminate the risk of password compromise. Shikirah agreed, highlighting that many people struggle with remembering multiple passwords and the time wasted resetting them. Denis confirmed that he has not typed a password for two and a half years, emphasizing the feasibility and benefits of going passwordless. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beinsightfulintechnology/support

On today's episode we are talking about how ignoring the work-from-home trends might be killing your company.Denis O'Shea is the founder and chairman of Mobile Mentor, a global leader in the endpoint ecosystem. Founded in New Zealand in 2004, the company empowers people to achieve more with their devices. In 2017, O'Shea moved to Nashville to focus on securing the mobile workforce in the US. He has partnered with industry leaders like Nokia, Citrix, and Microsoft, earning the Global Partner of the Year Award for Endpoint Management. A former global executive with Nokia, O'Shea has extensive international business experience. He is passionate about international business, fly-fishing, and playing guitar.Key Discussion Points:Stagnant Hybrid Work Configuration but Shifting Attitudes: Despite the pandemic subsiding, the configuration of hybrid work has remained unchanged over the last two years. However, employees' attitudes have significantly shifted, with increased focus on personal well-being, productivity, and privacy, while company culture has become less important. Challenges with Remote Work Onboarding and Security: Remote onboarding continues to be problematic, with employees struggling to set up devices and get necessary support. Younger employees are using unsecured personal devices and practicing lax password management, leading to potential security breaches.Discrepancies in Productivity and Preferences Across Generations: Gen Z employees, who began their careers during the pandemic, prefer office environments for better productivity and support. They exhibit more casual attitudes towards data security, unlike older generations who prioritize company and personal data security more highly. Generational Differences in Data Sharing Attitudes: Younger generations, particularly Millennials, are more willing to share personal data in exchange for convenience and insights. This contrasts with older generations, who tend to be more cautious about data privacy and security. Effective Communication About Data Privacy in Companies: Companies should reframe security messages with a focus on personal privacy to better engage employees. Emphasizing the protection of personal data resonates more with employees than using terms like compliance and risk.Top Takeaways for the Audience:Hybrid work is here to stay. Research shows that hybrid work is now a permanent fixture in the workplace. Companies need to invest more in making hybrid work environments secure, productive, and cohesive. There is still much to do in enabling and empowering hybrid workers with the right technology. It's an ongoing journey for everyone involved, including organizations like Mobile Mentor, to figure out and optimize hybrid work setups. The process of improving hybrid work is both challenging and enjoyable. With increasing numbers of clients and partners working in hybrid configurations across various geographies and time zones, it's crucial to remain passionate and engaged in making hybrid work successful. How to Connect with Denis: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/denisosheamobilementor/Website: https://www.mobile-mentor.com/

https://youtu.be/euOxUX7nlj4 Denis O'Shea is the founder of Mobile Mentor, an MSP helping clients find and maintain the right balance between securing devices, protecting data, and empowering people to be productive. We talk about cybersecurity for a remote workforce, how to go totally password-free, and how to turn your company into a “Category of One” business. --- Define Your Own Category with Denis O'Shea Our guest is Denis O'Shea the founder of Mobile Mentor and MSP helping clients find and maintain the right balance between securing devices, protecting data and empowering people to be productive. Mobile Mentor has helped over a million clients and has become Microsoft's Global Partner of the Year in the process. Dennis, welcome to the show. Thank you, Steve. It's a pleasure to be on your show. I appreciate it. Well, it's going to be great, our conversation. I've been looking forward to it. And you have quite an entrepreneurial journey with Mobile Mentor and arriving to the point where you got these awards and helped a million people. How did that come about? How did you come up with this idea of mobile mentor and how did that evolve over the years? Well, like many business ideas, it came out of a failure. And I used to work for Nokia in Europe and I lost a big sale in Switzerland around 2003. And that was like somebody kicked me up the butt and it forced me to think about what was going on. And what happened was I was trying to sell some technology to the CEO of one of the mobile operators in Europe. And he said, why should I buy this technology from you when our customers are not using the technology we bought last year? And I didn't have an answer. And I lost the sale and I went away with my tail between my legs. And it really got me thinking about how do we, not just sell technology, how do we ensure that people use technology, that people actually adopt the technology they purchase and get value from it? And I left Nokia after a 15 year career, I left Nokia and I set up Mobile Mentor to try and answer that question. I tackled the space and smartphones because I could see people are buying these smartphones and they were doing two very simple things with these amazing phones. They were making phone calls and they were sending text messages. And that was it. People were not configuring email. They were not syncing their calendar. They were not getting music on these devices. They were not browsing the web. They were just doing very basic things. And I thought, wow, we have a huge problem here. This industry is spending billions of dollars every year to try and get smartphones deployed and building all these 3G and 4G networks. And people are fundamentally not using them. I'm gonna dedicate my career to solving that problem and enabling people to get value from these smartphones they're purchasing so they can become more productive mobile workers. So that was the reason I founded the company. That's very interesting. So I just had a conversation today, one of my clients who is providing a subscription service and he basically said the same thing that what's important is that people use the service and with a subscription-based service, if they don't use it, they're gonna cancel the subscription. So it's kind of a mutual interest that the service, that the client is able to use it, be successful with it. And it's an incentive to the provider that they constantly upgrade the service, they constantly increase the value, otherwise they're going to lose a customer. Exactly. So it's an interesting approach. So, okay. So how, so what happened then? So we, so I set up the business and I managed to convince Nokia to give me some money and also Vodafone, who was the biggest mobile operator in the world. And they gave me some money to do a pilot with 10,000 people. And we set up their smartphones. It was like a one-to-one service. So if you just got your first BlackBerry or back in those days Nokia device,

(Lander, WY) – KOVE 1330 AM / 107.7 FM's Coffee Time host Vince Tropea recently sat down with Amarah Fegring and Anne Mason the artistic directors (and performer) behind AN ILIAD, which makes its way to Lander this week. Laramie's Relative Theatrics and Lander's Communal Pancake Performing Arts are collaborating to present the play by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare. AN ILIAD will be performed January 18-21, 2023, at 7 pm in the Lander Library Carnegie Room. Check out the full Coffee Time interview with Fehring and Mason and the official press release below. Poetry and humor, the ancient tale of the Trojan War, and the modern world collide in this captivating theatrical experience. The setting is simple: the empty theater. The time is now: the present moment; a lone figure stands onstage. AN ILIAD is a modern-day retelling of Homer's classic and features a single storyteller, The Poet (Anne Mason), who is fated to travel from one town to the next, telling the story of the Trojan War. h/t Communal Pancake Performing Arts and Relative Theatrics h/t Communal Pancake Performing Arts and Relative Theatrics "During the course of the play, you come to realize that the Poet has been charged with the task of telling the story for thousands of years and has laid witness to every major conflict in Western - and global - history since 2,000 BCE," said Anne Mason, actor and Producing Artistic Director for Relative Theatrics. "The Homeric epic is quoted, paraphrased, and contextualized for today's modern, English-speaking audience… but there's still a bit of the ancient Greek language sprinkled in!" Relative Theatrics originally produced the play in Laramie during the fall of 2019, featuring Mason as the Poet, and directed by Riverton native Andrew Thornton. "I began preparing for the September 2019 performance in February of the same year," Mason said. "In addition to reading a couple of translations of Homer's The Iliad, this show also required an intense amount of research - everything from ancient Greek civilization and Greek mythology to military tactics and world history. I also spent many hours with University of Wyoming professor Dr. Laura De Lozier learning the ancient Greek language in the text." Before AN ILIAD, Mason had done several small-cast shows, but this was her first time being alone on stage. "I was surprised to learn how lonely it can be to vulnerably lean into a piece without the support and camaraderie of fellow castmates," Mason said. "It is rigorous and requires an incredible amount of self-accountability. It also means that the pressure is on you to bring it every night - you can't rely on someone else's energy to pick up any slack. I found that I needed to engage in a two-hour warm-up ritual for each performance in order to get my voice, my body, and my mind primed for the show." In the summer of 2022, Mason connected with Amara Fehring, the Artistic Director for Communal Pancake Performing Arts. The pair quickly decided that a collaboration would be an excellent creative opportunity for Lander and Wyoming. "Once we decided to co-produce a show, it was a matter of finding the right play, and we thought AN ILIAD would be the perfect fit," Mason said. “It is Communal Pancake and Relative Theatrics' hope to promote the idea of theatre as a platform that fosters open civic dialogue while highlighting the eternally relevant aspects of human life" In addition to the performance, the team is providing arts education programming based on the play in Fremont County. Over this past week, Mason has conducted workshops in multiple Fremont County high school and middle school classrooms rooted in the play's content. "I am a huge proponent of Arts Education and of using theatre as a means to better access scholastic content," said Mason. "It has been a treat to bring workshops to Fremont County students that apply theatre skills in order to explore character devel...
This episode is a bit different than what you might be used to hearing. It's a conversation about how secure your team's passwords are and the risks associated with the sensitive employee and client information that used to live at the office, but has now become accessible from your employees' homes. When the pandemic hit, most of us tried to figure out how to be able to work from home within a matter of days. Having the tech set up and being able to access work files and tools was way more important than data security... unless, of course, security is your jam ;-) Well, that whole situation resulted in a 500% increase in cybercrime! Since risk awareness and prevention is a key responsibility of a manager, I'm confident that you'll find this conversation with Denis O'Shea, the founder of Mobile Mentor, insightful. Denis' company has just published the results of a study to understand the hybrid workforce, specifically remote workers coming out of the pandemic. Some of the findings were very surprising, and he shares them in this episode of The Manager Track podcast! You'll learn some practical tips to help you avoid (or at least be prepared for) the nightmare of a cyber attack or data breach. If you found this episode insightful, please do share it with the leadership in your organization's tech/ security department. — RESOURCES MENTIONED — Connect with Denis on Linkedin Read whitepapers published by Mobile Mentor to help improve your security knowledge! 80% of people prioritize their personal privacy over their organizational security. The average person is overloaded with passwords to remember. What if instead of giving the same old online security training, we started making it about personal privacy? When you think about it, your company has your salary information, your social security details, and your home address, and they have an obligation to make sure it never gets leaked. By talking about data security in terms of personal privacy, you can not only get the ear of the people in your organization - but you can also make your company more secure. We know that people are sick and tired of passwords, each person has upwards of 97 passwords as of 2022. The answer is not to write your password in a book, it's not writing them in an app, or having a browser remember all your passwords. What would it look like to go password-less? With the technology we have available today we can rely on biometrics, multi-factor authentication, and single sign on. In this week's episode, we interview Mircosoft Partner of the year, Denis O'Shea for his take on what data security looks like for 2022 and beyond. If you're wondering how to be more aware of your digital privacy whether you're working at home or in an office, this is the episode for you. THE FINER DETAILS OF THIS SHOWWhy are you so passionate about the idea of businesses going paper-less, server-less, and password-less? [4:19] After doing a study on how people work in a post-pandemic setting, what did you learn? [6:28] What do people need to do to secure their home office when working remotely?[14:47] What role do generational differences play in the approach to data security? [20:44] A key question in interviews is, "do I have to come into the office?". For people who grew up in a world that was physically unsafe, it relates back to privacy. How much of this drive for privacy is tied to the need for personal agency? The rise of remote work has changed businesses in many ways. One of the most notable consequences has been its effect on the way employees behave and work. Not only is the line between work and home life becoming increasingly blurred, but the distinction between our work and personal devices has also become less clear than ever. While it may seem simpler and cheaper to allow your employees to work on their own devices, the truth is that the laxness around regulated devices and passwords is creating a huge security risk at a time when the threat of cybercrime attacks, like hacking and ransomware, has never been higher. Here to help us tackle this important topic is Denis O'Shea, Founder of Mobile Mentor, a company that provides its clients with invisible securities that aren't disruptive to their employees' workflow. In our conversation, Denis describes the challenge that companies currently face in attempting to create a robust security system, while also ensuring a seamless employee experience, and what can be done about it. We also discuss their surprise win of the prestigious Microsoft Partner of the Year award, how it was all thanks to several innovative shifts they'd instituted over the past two years, and what they're doing to make sure they win again next year. To learn more about security in 2022 and how to leverage the power of an award to scale effectively, make sure you tune in today!
