LGBTQ Conversations in Local Churches - Part 1: Questions, Thoughts and Our Experience

Difficult conversations in churches are…well, difficult.  Most of us simply aren't taught how to disagree or discuss hard things in the context of faith within the church.  One of the most difficult conversations a church can journey through is a conversation on LGBTQ inclusivity.  Since there are typically a lot of theological perspectives, lived experiences and long held beliefs, this conversation in particular can get heated very quickly.  Because many denominations are having conversation like this, being clear and honest in messaging regarding LGBTQ affirmation is crucial for churches. Over the last few years, we have received a lot of questions about this very process.  What was it like to have a conversation on inclusivity in a local church?  What did you actually do, talk about, and how?  What did you learn along the way?  In this episode, we dive into the process of what that was like for our local church, and we hope our story helps if your local church congregation is discussing inclusivity soon. We have so many friends on all sides of this topic, so we enter this dialogue very gently and do our best to approach this discussion with gentleness and compassion.  We know from this experience that conversations like this are hard and can be hurtful to all involved because church family is just that…family.  Our aim for this podcast is to really sit in the difficulty of how hard the process of having this conversation was and to give thoughts and suggestions from our experience that are helpful to others. This isn't an episode on the theology of affirmation or a deep dive on scripture passages.  If that is what you are looking for, then we suggest listening to episodes 32-35. In our most recent episode (Season 4, Episode 5) we looked at the issues news businesses face securing loans and basic banking services when dealing with a product that is still considered federally illegal. We got a lot of response to that episode, and we want to share what we learned with you in this follow up. And for the most part, the news appears to be good for those trying to break into the industry in New Mexico. Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick talk with Shannon Cox, Cannabis Program Executive with Southwest Capital Bank, about their ever-expanding approach to lending to cannabis businesses. We also learn more about risk management and insurance coverage for these businesses with Kenny Byrd, a risk Management Specialist. Every experience we have in life impacts us.  Some experiences leave a huge impact, like a canyon in the desert.  Others might leave such a tiny ripple that we don't even notice the effects.  Religious trauma, hurts from the institutional Church, or any pain we experience at the hands of those who represent the spiritual to us are deep wounds that leave an impact that often takes years to process. This sermon that our dear friend Layne Rogerson gave at Cedarbridge Baptist Church in Greenville, NC back in June of 2021 speaks to this very idea.  Layne shares parts of her family's story and weaves in the truth that even amid pain and struggle, God is at work, moving all things toward redemption and blessing.  With Layne's permission we wanted to share this sermon with the Finding Free community and talk about why it was so meaningful to us. Staying Safe While Voting (0:00:00) Election Day is just around the corner! Have you voted by mail or are you gearing up to get in line at the polls? Well thanks to COVID, many people are concerned about the health risks involved with in-person voting. Here to talk to us about what we can do to make voting a safe and enjoyable experience is Dr. Joseph Khabbaza, a pulmonary medicine doctor with Cleveland Clinic.  Halloween Strategies for Safety and Fun (0:35:41) Crazy as it seems, we're approaching Halloween (and that's my only rhyme for the morning)! It seems like quarantine started, I blinked, and now it's almost Halloween night! Now, I don't know about you, but Halloween is one of my favorites holidays—the costumes, the jump-scares, and (most importantly) the candy. However, as fun as Halloween is, there are definitely some important precautions to be taken when preparing for Halloween—especially this year. Here to discuss as how to safely celebrate Halloween and some trick or treating alternatives is friend of the show, Carrie Ann Rhodes.   Mentoring Women from Prison (0:52:41) What if you could literally change someone's life for the better? Not only would that be an amazing accomplishment, but think of the relationship you would build with them. Today we wanted to talk about a service opportunity that would allow you to do just that. Shannon Cox is the Executive Director for Journey of Hope, an organization that partners volunteers with women who are transitioning out of prison to help them learn how to change their lives so they can have success.   Managing Screen-time (1:13:32) The integration of technology into our lives is on the rise. Not only is it hard to keep up with the ever-evolving tech, but it also seems impossible to manage our time on and off our devices. We're consumed by our phones, social media, music, and TV as we continually strive to be more productive and efficient.  Technology has found its way into our kid's hands as well. But what's concerning is that kids don't have as much self-control as adults, and many parents wonder if it's possible to manage screen time in a tech-driven world. Here with us to help answer that question is Arlene Pellicane, author and speaker, to help us understand how our kids can navigate a tech-driven world.   How COVID is Affecting Women in Business (1:27:54) As we've discussed on the show before, women wear many hats. Mothers, sisters, employees, bosses, teachers, friends, neighbors and more. With the pandemic, many have been forced to fill new roles that they hadn't experienced before. And this, as many women have experienced, spreads them thin. For example, working mothers are now their kids' teachers at home. And some stay-at-home mothers are having to find work or start side businesses to ease financial strain. But what affect does this have on women? And how can they find flexibility and balance in the many roles they juggle without falling behind? Here to shed greater light on the situation, as well as offer advice is Jennifer Mackin, CEO and leadership development influencer.
