Melvyn Bragg and guests explore typology, a method of biblical interpretation that aims to meaningfully link people, places, and events in the Hebrew Bible, what Christians call the Old Testament, with the coming of Christ in the New Testament. Old Testament figures like Moses, Jonah, and King David were regarded by Christians as being ‘types' or symbols of Jesus. This way of thinking became hugely popular in medieval Europe, Renaissance England and Victorian Britain, as Christians sought to make sense of their Jewish inheritance - sometimes rejecting that inheritance with antisemitic fervour. It was a way of seeing human history as part of a divine plan, with ancient events prefiguring more modern ones, and it influenced debates about the relationship between metaphor and reality in the bible, in literature, and in art. It also influenced attitudes towards reality, time and history. In the quiet elegance of 1880s Cheltenham, a spectral presence stirred unease in a grand old family mansion in the centre of town. The ghost—described as a tall, veiled woman in black—appeared repeatedly to the daughters of the Despard family, moving silently through the house and vanishing without trace. Witnessed by multiple family members over several years, the haunting became one of Britain's most documented supernatural cases, thanks to the efforts of the newly founded Society for Psychical Research, who jumped at the chance to study a haunted house, first hand. Once an admired figure in NSW police, the now disgraced Roger Rogerson left a trail of corruption and death as he moved his way through the force. Former NSW Detective Deborah Locke was at the centre of Rogerson's grip on the police, and faced horrific consequences for standing up to him and his corruption. Deb sat down with host Brent Sanders, and unpacked the details of her life in the force and how she overcame both Rogerson and the police itself. Two former high-profile NSW Detectives lured a drug dealer to a storage unit in Sydney's southern suburbs and murdered him in what the just called a "cold-blooded execution". Their trial took a turn when both turned on the other trying to prove they didn't kill Jamie Gao, the 20-year-old drug dealer who had taken 2.8 kilograms of the drug ice to the meeting, expecting to make millions in the deal. He was dead minutes later. The Muslim world, despite its sprawling and complex history, is largely understood by outsiders to fall within the Shia or Sunni category, or among the conflict between. This is not just misleading, but also obscures a much more fascinating and colorful human history of the Middle East which continues to shape events today. In this episode of Departures with Robert Amsterdam, we're pleased to feature Barnaby Rogerson, the author of "The House Divided: Sunni, Shia and the Making of the Middle East." Rogerson, who is a seasoned British author, television presenter and publisher explores these complex themes and history, sharing stories dating back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632, the accidental coup against his son, and fast forwarding right up to the Iranian revolution to draw insights on the religious cleavages which have taken root in the region in modern times.

While up at the 2024 World Championships in Calgary at Spruce Meadows, we were able to sit down with guests we don't get to see often because they live across the world in England, so it was awesome to get to have a chat with Alex Collier and George Rogerson. What we find is really cool is that when we chatted, nobody knew who the new World Champion was going to be yet and now that we're releasing this episode it has been announced that George Rogerson is the 2024 World Champion Blacksmith! Congratulations George and to everyone else who competed at the World Championships. It's a very exciting time amongst us knowing this information and feeling that buzz being around so many talented and motivated farriers. We enjoyed having this conversation with Alex and George, getting to hear how they both became farriers and their journeys to becoming some of the best in the world. It's cool to hear how similar they are to us in the states but yet their system they have to abide by in the UK sets them apart from us too. It's apparent that they both wanted to become farriers and once they got on this path, they set their minds to it to become the best of the best. My special guest tonight is Ali Saidatan who's here to discuss the alien-hybrids that are being created to replace the human race in secret. Abductions in History: While "alien abduction" did not achieve widespread attention until the 1960s, many similar stories are known to have been circulating decades earlier. These early abduction-like accounts have been dubbed "paleo-abductions" by UFO researcher Jerome Clark.[3] This same two-part article ([4] and [3]) makes note of many paleo-abductions, some of which were reported well before the 1957 Antonio Villas Boas case earned much attention, or even before the UFO report claimed in 1947 by pilot Kenneth Arnold that first generated widespread interest in UFOs: At least one case of attempted abduction was reported in conjunction with the mystery airships of the late 19th century. Colonel H. G. Shaw's account was published in the Stockton, California Daily Mail in 1897: Shaw claimed that he and a friend were harassed by three tall, slender humanoids whose bodies were covered with a fine, downy hair. The beings tried to accost or kidnap Shaw and his friend, who were able to fight them off.[4] In his book New Lands (1923), American writer Charles Fort speculated that extraterrestrial beings might have kidnapped humans: "One supposes that if extra-mundane vessels have sometimes come close to this earth, then sailing away, terrestrial aëronauts may have occasionally left this earth, or may have been seized and carried away from this earth."[5] The 1951 case of Fred Reagan was publicized by Flying Saucer Review in the late 1960s based on news clippings from 1952. Reagan claimed to have been piloting his small airplane, which was struck by a UFO; the occupants (who resembled metallic stalks of asparagus) apologized, and tried to cure Reagan's cancer. Reagan reportedly died of a brain disorder not long after the alleged UFO encounter.[6][unreliable source?] In 1954, Paris Match printed a story said to have occurred in 1921, when the anonymous writer was a child. The writer claimed to have been snatched by two tall "men" who wore helmets and "diving suits", who took the boy to an "oddly shaped tank" before being released. Rogerson calls this story "the earliest known abduction survivor report".[2] A 1958 letter to NICAP asserted that two U.S. Army soldiers witnessed two bright red lights near their base. The soldiers had a strange sense of dissociation, and found themselves in a new location, with no memory of how they arrived there.[citation needed] Rogerson writes that the publication of Harold T. Wilkins's Flying Saucers Uncensored (1955) declared that two contactees (Karl Hunrath and Wilbur Wilkinson) had disappeared under mysterious circumstances; Wilkins reported speculation that the duo were the victims of "alleged abduction by flying saucers".[2] The so-called Shaver Mystery of the 1940s has some similarities to later abduction accounts, as well, with sinister beings said to be kidnapping and torturing people. Rogerson writes that John Robinson (a friend of ufology gadfly Jim Moseley) made a 1957 appearance on John Nebel's popular overnight radio program to tell "a dramatically spooky, if not very plausible, abduction tale" related to the Shaver Mystery: Robinson claimed that a friend of his had been held captive by the evil Deros beneath the Earth, and to have been the victim of a sort of mind control via small "earphones"; Rogerson writes that "in this unlikely tale that we first encounter the implants ... and other abductionist staples".[2] Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio
Compliance Clarified – a podcast by Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence
It's been quite a month for elections in Europe, but in this episode, Regulatory Intelligence's Lindsey Rogerson, Mike Cowan, and Rachel Wolcott pick out what financial services should be aware of after the Labour party's win in the UK election on July 5. The financial services sector certainly will play a part in Labour's growth plans. The party's financial services plan, published in January said: “We will unashamedly champion our financial services sector as one of the UK's greatest assets.”Rachel Reeves, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer and the first woman to hold the post in 800 years, has been warmly received by women working in Britain's finance sector. Her appointment as well as the increase in diversity in members of parliament across all parties was called a break-through moment at this week's Women in Finance summit held in London. Tulip Siddiq was appointed as City Minister as the podcast was going to press. She had been Labour's shadow City Minister since 2021. On July 8 Reeves told an audience of financial services and green industry leaders that economic growth is a national mission. She also announced Labour will go ahead with a national wealth fund with a remit to invest in and catalyse private sector investment in new and growing industries. This discussion was recorded on 8th July, things will change when the government gets going with its first King's Speech setting out its legislative agenda and announces its budget in the fall. There will be a wait to hear whether the new government prioritizes crypto and pushes forward with that regulatory workstream, where it lands on economic crime and how it will push forward the green finance agenda as well as changes to the car insurance market—to name but a few items in its bulging inbox. Perhaps the biggest question now, however, is whether the government will do something for financial services when it comes to doing business with the European Union.
