Back off, you Neanderthal! It sounds as if you've just been dissed, but maybe you should take it as a compliment. Contrary to common cliches, our Pleistocene relatives were clever, curious, and technologically inventive. Find out how our assessment of Neanderthals has undergone a radical rethinking, and hear about the influence they have as they live on in our DNA. For example, some of their genes have a strong association with severe Covid 19 infection. Plus, how Neanderthal mini-brains grown in a lab will teach us about the evolution of Homo sapiens. Guests: Svante Pääbo – Evolutionary geneticist and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Doyle Stevick – Associate professor of educational leadership and policies at the University of South Carolina. Beverly Brown – Professor emerita of anthropology, Rockland Community College, New York. Rebecca Wragg Sykes – Paleolithic anthropologist, author of “Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art.” Alysson Muotri – Neuroscientist and professor of pediatrics, cellular and molecular medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine Originally aired March 22, 2021 Featuring music by Dewey Dellay and Jun Miyake Big Picture Science is part of the Airwave Media podcast network. “Gateway courses” are supposed to clear the path to fields of study, but for millions of students who struggle in those key classes, they often shut the door prematurely. This week's episode of The Key digs into early efforts to develop courseware for 20 high enrollment courses that can make or break whether students from all backgrounds persist and ultimately complete their educations. The goal of the initiative, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is to bring together colleges, companies and research organizations to build digital courses that can be used on dozens if not hundreds of campuses to eliminate gaps in performance by students from different backgrounds. Ariel Anbar is a President's Professor at Arizona State University, which is working with Carnegie Mellon University and the publisher OpenStax to create a general chemistry course heavy on active learning and real-world problem solving. Jeanette Koskinas is chief product officer at Lumen Learning, which is developing an intro statistics course in close collaboration with students and instructors at institutions like Rockland Community College and Santa Ana College. The Key is hosted by Inside Higher Ed Co-founder and Editor Doug Lederman. This episode is sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Wilton sits down with Angel Reyes-Muñiz, the first Mexican basketball player from New York City to play for the Mexican national team. Reyes is a true hooper at heart and a student of the game. But his journey as a player—one that is still evolving—goes beyond the hardwood. The Bronx native became the first person to graduate in his family in September 2022 when he earned an associate degree from Rockland Community College. He credits his mom as his biggest inspiration to keep striving for more and not giving up on his dreams. As he continues to build on his hoop dreams, Reyes has multiple years of college eligibility remaining. His goal is to land with a program that will position him to one day get a chance to play in the NBA. It helps that he has relationships with former legends like Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Kyrie Irving to help him navigate the process. Sit back and get ready to listen as he dives into his hoop dreams, the lessons he learned on the courts in NYC, his relationship with his mom, the international growth among the NBA and some of his previous and recent brand collaborations away from the court.

Dr. Jackson was a critical contributor to the quadracentennial celebrations in the county with key leadership roles in both the Tappan Zee Bridge with the Historical Society of Rockland County and the Mighty River Project with the African-American Historical Society of Rockland County, Rockland Community College, and the CEJJES Institute. Other awards he received included the Distinguished Alumnus at SUNY Cortland, Suffern High School Alumnus of the Year, the Ashby Award, which is the highest award that a Ridgewood teacher or administrator can receive. Broadcast originally aired on October 21, 2019.Clare Sheridan welcomed Arlene Clinkscale, who made New York State education history when she became the first African American woman in the state to lead a school district: Nyack.Dr. Clinkscale has distinguished herself in the field of education since 1950. She came to Rockland County in 1960 after ten years of teaching elementary school in Virginia. She taught in Pearl River and Spring Valley for six years before assuming a series of senior administrative positions in the East Ramapo and Nyack Central school districts, rising to the rank of district superintendent in Nyack in 1981. She also served as principal for Englewood Public Schools in addition to assistant superintendent and acting superintendent. A native of Haiti, Jean Paul arrived in the United States in 2004 with a suitcase and a dream to excel. Since his arrivival, he has taken charge of his academic and professional development while remaining committed to achieving his dream. Jean Paul’s approach to addressing the challenges facing Haiti after the earthquake is to combine his training in dental care with his need to give back. He was immediately struck by the children’s persistent smiles in the face of overwhelming hardship and soon realized that behind each smile hid an unspoken story waiting to be told – a thought that became the seed of Unspoken Smiles Foundation. Jean Paul's strong leadership and successful track record for delivery of care have attracted investors who partner with him to help the children of Haiti, and his philanthropic achievements have garnered recognition from a variety of prestigious organizations. Jean Paul is working on an MPA in Advance Management and Finance at Columbia University - School of International and Public Affairs, holds a B.S in Health Service Administration from City Tech, an AAS in Dental Hygiene from NYU College of Dentistry, and an AS in Liberal Arts from Rockland Community College.
