How did Ramez Naam spot the exponential cost trends in renewables? How should we tailor our messaging to convince different audiences we need to act on climate change? Why are forecasters so often wrong?Ramez Naam, our Ep12 guest talks about all of the above and much more!   Not many people manage to write critically acclaimed science-fiction series and equally appreciated non-fiction books. Even smaller subset happens to also be energy analysts and investors. And there’s only one who, in addition, holds several patents, some co-authored with Bill Gates. Ramez Naam is, by all measures, a rare type of person.  Originally from Cairo, Egypt he moved to the US at the age of 3. He studied computer science nad started his career with Microsoft, where he worked on the company’s flagship projects – including Outlook.  After 13 years, he switched to the energy sector and was one of the first to spot the exponential cost trends in renewables. In his 2011 piece ‘Smaller, Cheaper, Faster’ he noted that solar had the steepest learning curve and would eventually become the cheapest source of power.  Ramez has written five books – the first two about the frontiers of science and how they will impact, for the better, on the human condition: The Infinite Resource: the power of ideas on a finite planet (2013) and More than human (2005). These were followed by three science fiction titles, Nexus, Crux and Apex (2015)  Ramez is also an angel investor, focused on energy and sustainability, a co-chair for energy and the environment at the Singularity University, an advisor to Shell New Energies, as well as a very in-demand public speaker. He covers not only energy, but also issues like transhumanism.  Key links: Ramez Naam’s websitehttps://rameznaam.com/ Ramez Naam’s author page on Amazonhttps://www.amazon.com/Ramez-Naam/e/B001IOH84S Smaller Cheaper Faster (2011)https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/smaller-cheaper-faster-does-moores-law-apply-to-solar-cells/ Ramez Naam: capitalism is not the enemy of climate (2015)https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2015/jun/30/ramez-naam-capitalism-climate-change-ideas-markets Solar’s future is insanely cheaphttps://rameznaam.com/2020/05/14/solars-future-is-insanely-cheap-2020/ Scenarios for a solar singularity (Liebreich, December 2018)https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/scenarios-solar-singularity-michael-liebreich About Cleaning UpOnce a week Michael Liebreich has a conversation (and a drink) with a leader in clean energy, mobility, climate finance or sustainable development. Each episode covers the technical ground on some aspect of the low-carbon transition – but it also delves into the nature of leadership in the climate transition: whether to be optimistic or pessimistic; how to communicate in order to inspire change; personal credos; and so on.And it should be fun – most of the guests are Michael’s friends.Follow Cleaning Up on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MLCleaningUpLinks to other Podcast Platforms: https://www.cleaningup.live/

Global energy giants have been on a distributed energy acquisition spree over the last few years. With the formation of its New Energies unit in 2016, Shell is leading the oil & gas majors in investment and vision.Shell New Energies plans to invest $2 billion dollars in renewables, microgrids, batteries, electric vehicle charging, and other emerging tech every year. That number is just a tiny sliver of Shell's fossil fuel and chemical businesses, but it's enough money to start re-arranging the competitive landscape for clean electrification. Most recently, the company acquired sonnen, a leading behind-the-meter battery company, and First Utility, a UK retail supplier and smart home service provider. Shell is developing smart home offerings through both companies. This week, Brian Davis, the VP of energy solutions at Shell, joins us to discuss the company's strategy. His job: to help reshape the strategy of Shell and build up new businesses around biofuels and electrification. What does the New Energies strategy tell us about where Shell thinks the world is headed? We'll cover the following topics:Shell's acquisitions over the past two years: why those companies? How do we fit those puzzle pieces together? To what degree do they optimize for near-term profit vs. land-grabs in key areas? How will shell integrate all these businesses, both strategically and culturally? What are the biggest risks to Shell's strategy? What's the long-term profitability of the new energies business? How does it become more profitable? Will all supermajors eventually follow in Shell's footsteps? The most recent acquisition of First Utility provides snapshot of Shell's customer strategy: “We're offering a suite of smart home solutions, starting from smart thermostats that control your heating remotely. And then clearly over time we can offer an electric vehicle charger…we can come in and offer the benefits of energy storage if you have onsite solar. So we're offering all of that as packages to meet the needs of our customers under the Shell brand in the UK,” says Davis.Recommended reading/listening:Reuters: Shell Goes Green as It Rebrands UK Household Power SupplierGTM: Shell New Energies Director on Investing in Clean Energy: ‘It's About Survival'The Interchange: Solar Dwarfs Oil and Gas as World's Primary Source of Energy in Shell's Sky ScenarioSupport for this podcast comes from PG&E. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   KIA ENIRO UPDATE I am a Norwegian reservation holder, currently #5605 !! They had previously said (Bjørn Nyland has confirmed):- "Norway is allocated 2000 Kia E-Nero's for delivery during 2019. But this may change?" They stopped the reservation program when it reached 6000. I think Nov.2018 and have refunded all deposits made ( 7,777 NOK)   I got a text from Kia Norway on 16.Jan.2019:-   It states they will deliver 356 Cars by 23 Feb.2019. So for me at 5605, well when then, 2020 if I'm lucky?   Translated to English:- "Delivery of the first e-Niro will soon start. The first customers on the reservation list have now signed a contract, and the delivery of these cars starts at the end of January / February, and beyond in February. We are pleased to announce that we have managed to get a good allocation of e-Niro at the beginning of the year. Here are the next shipments we have an overview of with arrival Drammen: (From arrival it takes from 1-3 weeks until the cars are out at the dealer, depending on where in the country they are sent) January 29, 83 cars arrive. On February 9, 24 cars arrive. On February 23, 249 cars arrive In these shipments there are cars with a total of 9 exterior colors and 2 interior colors. This differs from the colors we have initially set up for "First Edition". During January, we will contact the next customers on the list, 50-100 at a time, for car allocation. They choose a car and sign a contract with their dealer. If color originally selected is not on this delivery, one will be able to choose a different color, or wait for the next shipment."     AUDI TO UNVEIL NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS IN GENEVA Audi announced that at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, the company will unveil new plug-in hybrid models. The plural form indicates that there will be at least two new PHEVs. Martin Sander, currently in charge of operations at the Marketing and Sales division of AUDI AG, said that the expansion into PHEVs will be substantial" reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Audi BEV models: Audi e-tron (already in production, deliveries in early 2019), Audi e-tron Sportback (to debut in 2019), Audi e-tron GT concept (from late 2020), Audi A3-sized EV concept (to be unveiled soon), Audi SUV BEV based on MEB platform (from late 2020) (to be unveiled soon), 5 more SUVs"   https://insideevs.com/audi-new-plug-in-hybrids-geneva/   REPORT: AUDI E-TRON FACES BATTERY-RELATED DELAY IN EUROPE "Audi's e-tron SUV was scheduled to go on sale in Europe by now, but its rollout in Europe has been delayed to next month, according to a report today from Automotive News Europe. Back in October, Audi told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag that it was working on "improvements in the interests of the buyer." Sources then told Bild that it had to do with battery software." according to Eric at Green Car Reports: "The newspaper had reported a bottleneck in battery supplies as battery supplier LG Chem is seeking a 10-percent price hike for the car's 95-kilowatt-hour battery. Citing sources close to Audi and/or its suppliers, it anticipated the software and battery pricing issues could delay the car for months. Audi spokesman Mark Dahnke said in an emailed statement that the launch schedule in the U.S. remains in the second quarter (of 2019) "as we have been targeting from the beginning."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121399_audi-e-tron-faces-battery-related-delay-in-europe   HUBJECT AND GREENLOTS COLLABORATE TO BRING APP-FREE AND CARD-FREE CHARGING TO EV DRIVERS "Hubject is collaborating with Greenlots to deploy its ISO 15118 Plug&Charge technology (earlier post) in North America. Customers with new, Plug&Charge-enabled vehicles will no longer need to worry about using an app or card to pay for their charge."This achievement is the result of a partnership between Hubject and Greenlots, a US-based provider of EV charging and energy management software and solutions and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell New Energies."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/02/20190208-hubject.html   EVGO SWITCHES UP ITS DC FAST CHARGING PRICES: LOWER MONTHLY PAYMENTS BUT HIGHER PER MINUTE Seth Weintraub at Electrek brings us the next story "US fast charging network EVgo has again decided to switch up its charging prices. The DC fast charger network that operates in 34 states charges its users on two tiers: Pay-as-you-go and Membership. EVgo charges based on time rather than electricity transfer and as of next week, prices are about to change. This week’s pricing update, called the ‘2019 prices‘ seems to affect membership prices, upping the costs significantly, almost to non-member prices. EVgo however, lowers the membership fee to $8 from $10/month but now includes few free minutes (only 29 minutes of free charging per month from 52 in New York for instance)."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/08/evgo-switches-charging-prices/   TESLA SHOWCASES MODEL 3 AT ONE OF EUROPE’S BUSIEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS Tesla is making its Model 3 presence in Europe known with the latest display of its all-electric sedan in one of the world’s busiest airports for international passenger traffic." reports Teslarati today: "In an appeal to potential customers in the European region, Tesla proudly displayed its newest vehicle in Lounge 1 of the Schengen area of Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. A photo posted of the Model 3 in the airport showed the car covered from view by a cloth; however, according to observations noted by other users on the site, the cover was being removed periodically and concealing a red Model 3."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-europe-amsterdam-airport-display/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. What is the role of the energy sector in the energy transition? DNV GL hears from Duncan van Bergen, Vice President of Shell New Energies, about Shell's vision for the future and the scale of transformation required. In this engaging episode, Duncan discusses the dual challenges of growing energy demand and a lower carbon future, with the population heading for 10 billion by 2070. Duncan tells us how Shell is investing in electricity retail, decentralized power, new fuels and electric mobility. He addresses the urgency issue raised by the IPCC report and highlights the unparalleled transformation needed to meet it. Duncan shares Shell's ‘Sky' scenario work, showing that a target of well below 2°C is possible and is therefore imperative that we try to achieve it. He shares examples of the scale of the challenge ahead and points to how Shell will manage the transformation with industry partnerships. Finally, Duncan tells us how he sees for the sector, both a mixture of daunting responsibility and business opportunities in the future. *This episode was recorded live at the Singapore International Energy Week 2018.
