Picture this: a factory that makes its own power, stores it, and has enough left over to sell back to the grid. It may sound like a thought experiment, but Siemens is running one right now in Wendell, North Carolina, at one of its industrial factories. Here's the gist. Solar panels on top of a carport feed a battery roughly the size of a small building, which lets the whole facility run on renewables, keep operations carbon-neutral, and yes, push excess power back into the grid for other people to use. The setup is a 1.25-megawatt microgrid paired with 3.9 megawatt-hours of battery storage, and it's one of the largest industrial solar plus storage systems on Duke Energy's distribution network in the Carolinas. When the grid goes down, the factory keeps humming. When the sun is shining and production is light, the surplus goes out the door and into the neighborhood. The carport doubles as covered parking with EV chargers tied into the same system, so EVs get charged on the factory's own solar. This is what an industrial microgrid actually looks like in practice, a real working example of solar plus storage, distributed energy resources, and smart building controls coming together to make a single site genuinely energy independent. It's also a preview of where a lot of manufacturing is heading as companies start seizing energy resilience as a competitive advantage. (Courtesy Schatz Energy Resource Center) Microgrids can be a lifeline in remote areas prone to power outages, according to local and tribal leaders in Humboldt County in California. Leaders spoke at an event on energy security in an era of wildfire, drought, and sea-level rise — linked to climate change. Suzanne Potter has more. Dr. Arne Jacobson, director of the Schatz Energy Research Center at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt says microgrids often involve solar panels plus battery storage. “During normal operation, they’re connected to the regional grid, and they can export power and generate revenue. And during a regional grid outage, they operate in “island mode” and can provide resilience energy services.” Microgrids have gained popularity in recent years as utilities have had to shut off power intermittently during wildfires and high wind events. Jacobson adds that the Willow Creek and Hoopa substations and their associated circuits in the Humboldt area are frequently on the top 10 list of least reliable circuits in the state. Beth Burks, who directs the Redwood Coastal Energy Authority, says its microgrid serves as backup power to the airport, and kept it online for 15 hours in December 2022, when an earthquake knocked out power. “We’re all familiar with how important it is to keep the airport going. We do emergency medical transport out of there, and the Coast Guard serves 250 miles of search-and-rescue territory. And again, we can keep them going when we go into ‘islanding.'” “Islanding” is the term for a system that can kick in and power a local area when the main utility grid goes down. Heidi Moore-Guynup with the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribe says its microgrid saved the day during the 2022 blackout, keeping several tribal buildings running so they could provide ice, gas, medical care, and lodging. “We want to be known as the safe place to go, the islands in times of despair. The annual spring event seeks art submissions from Alaska creatives for festival merchandise, including its promotional poster. KRBD's Hunter Morrison sat down with LeCornu to discuss how the opportunity will help expand representation of Indigenous artists throughout Alaska. Hunter Morrison: Can you tell me a little bit about what inspires your work as an artist? Savannah LeCornu: I'm an Indigenous artist. I’m part of three different tribes. I’m Tsimshian, Haida and Nez Perce. So a lot of my inspiration comes from the art styles of my tribes, as well as my family, surroundings, environment, friends, that kind of thing. HM: Can you tell me a little bit more about what mediums of art you specialize in? SL: Yeah. So mainly I draw and I paint. I do a lot of traditional drawing, but I also do digital drawing as well. So, working with Procreate on my iPad. And then I also do painting, mainly acrylic, but I have done watercolor here and there. HM: You were selected as this year’s poster artist for the Alaska Folk Festival. Do you have a design yet for that poster? Or, do you have ideas of what that design might look like? SL: I don’t know how secret they are with it. I will say my inspirations were some of my favorite musicians in Alaska, as well as the northern lights. HM: How will this opportunity expand not only your work as an artist, but expand the celebration of Indigenous people and Indigenous art? SL: Wow, what a great question. What I’m hoping for with being the artist for this year’s folk fest is that my art gets started to be seen more widely throughout Alaska. I will say it’s not my most obvious Indigenous design. I will say all of my art inherently becomes Indigenous because I am Indigenous, but at the same time, there’s no form line in it. There’s no traditional Native art in it for this design. After a careful review of the inconsistent public notices for the proposed DoñaAna County East and West Microgrids Air Quality Construction Permits for ProjectJupiter, CCNS found them to be defective. The discrepancies require a restart of thepublic comment periods for the proposed $165 billion microgrid facilities that will emit upto 13 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually – more than yearly emissionsgenerated by Las Cruces, Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Currently, public comments aredue on Monday, March 2, 2026 to the New Mexico Environment Department.

"What is a microgrid?...There's a lot of challenges that folks are dealing with around the grid infrastructure, with weather related challenges and load growth and other elements. And so what a microgrid does is help those customers become not only consumers of energy, but also producers of energy. So we like to call that a prosumer….So a microgrid helps to create that bridge between the building and the big grid…So if the grid's no longer there (e.g., an outage), they can act independently of the grid. It also helps with deploying more renewables on their sites, as well as really energy costs." #EP328 Federal funding for tribal clean energy projects has been rescinded. Tribes that invested millions in solar and microgrid projects now face stalled construction, lost jobs, and broken promises. David Harper, CEO of Huurav, is stepping in with bridge loans to keep these projects alive.David Harper is a tribal member from the Colorado River Indian Tribes on the Arizona-California border. He started his solar career fighting developers who disturbed sacred artifacts and human remains on tribal lands. Today, he runs Huurav, a company providing bridge financing for the 575 federally recognized tribes across the United States. His sister company, 7 Skyline, provides electrical engineering consulting to 80-90 tribes nationwide.Episode Highlights:The 2021 Infrastructure Bill allocated $10-15 billion for tribal energy projects. Much of that funding has been clawed back.Tribes that invested their own money now have stalled projects with no path to completion.Huurav provides 2-6 year bridge loans that allow tribes to continue construction while securing permanent financing.Capital stacking allows multiple funders (CDFIs, philanthropy, financial institutions, etc) to share risk on larger projects.Case study: Guidiville Rancheria in Mendocino County received a $1M bridge loan for a 500kW solar plus 1.5MW battery storage microgrid serving 44 homes.Huurav has 22 projects in its pipeline with more tribes requesting support.Tribal communities often suffer brownouts and blackouts because they sit at the end of utility lines. Microgrids offer energy independence.David Harper's story captures what happens when federal promises disappear overnight. Tribes that did everything right, completed feasibility studies, hired workers, and approved scopes of work, are left holding the bill. Huurav fills that gap with bridge loans sized to what tribes can pay back. Data centers face a critical timing problem. They need massive amounts of power immediately, but grid upgrades can take more than seven years to complete. Microgrids could be a solution to this growing power gap. "How do you future-proof your systems through adaptability of technologies? Microgrids are really a nice technology to address that," explains Adib Nasle, CEO of Xendee. In this episode, recorded as part of a live Frontier Forum, Latitude Media's Stephen Lacey speaks with Xendee co-founders Adib Nasle and Michael Stadler about how microgrids can help data centers get power quickly, while also preparing for future technology changes. The conversation explores how the combination of combined heat and power systems with supplemental technologies like batteries and renewables can create flexible, adaptable power solutions for mission-critical facilities. Their research across different energy markets shows striking cost reductions. "We saw cost reductions up to 80 percent in California and 60 percent in Virginia," notes Dr. Michael Stadler, CTO of Xendee. "If you really go with the utility, it's always the most expensive case." Using a stepped approach to microgrid implementation, data centers can achieve electricity prices significantly below grid rates — while maintaining complete control over their power infrastructure and preparing for future technologies like small modular reactors. "One way to think about microgrids is really as a Swiss army knife of energy infrastructure," says Nasle. "You're getting localized resilience, economics, flexibility, scalability, efficiency through controls, and the inherent benefits of a decentralized system."
