Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube channel is back, and before we get started, make sure you click the link in the show notes and head over to subscribe to his channel. If you care about firsthand accounts coming straight out of Alaska and rooted in lived cultural experience, Fred's work is essential listening. In this episode, Fred takes us beyond simple encounter stories and into the foundation of how knowledge is preserved in his culture. He explains the vital role oral tradition plays in passing down history, survival skills, and encounters with what many in his community know as the Hairy Man. Written documentation is rare. He points out that “Story Knife” remains one of the few works that even attempts to capture fragments of that tradition in print. For generations, stories were not recorded in books—they were carried in memory, tied to landmarks, seasons, and lived experience. Fred also reflects on navigation, describing how descriptive mapping and deep familiarity with terrain once guided people across vast, unforgiving landscapes long before GPS existed. In his view, those skills are not outdated relics—they still matter. The conversation then shifts to a chilling account Fred heard in 2004 from a man named Jerry in Togiak. Jerry described a winter hunting trip west of Non Dalton that took a terrifying turn. During the hunt, a scream erupted across the tundra so intense that it scattered nearby wolves. What followed was even more disturbing. A Hairy Man reportedly struck a caribou with a single backhand blow to the ribs, dropping it. Jerry and his companions salvaged and packed the meat, trying to focus on the task at hand, but the encounter was far from over. The creature returned, and in an overwhelming display of strength and dominance, it threw their packed quarters over a ridge. The men abandoned the situation and escaped on their snow machines, shaken by what they had witnessed. Jerry also recalled an earlier sighting along the West Channel of the Nok River, where he saw a tall, young, slender Hairy Man that fled the area and swam away, avoiding contact. Fred then shares experiences from a property owner near Juneau, referred to as “Sam,” whose encounters unfolded over time rather than in a single dramatic moment. Sam described strange whistling that mimicked human tones, the sound and sight of bipedal movement in the trees, prolonged wood-banging that echoed through the forest, rocks landing near hunters, and even owl hoots that felt deliberately imitative rather than natural. Alongside these physical signs was a persistent, oppressive feeling in the woods—an atmosphere that made it clear something was present. Sam hesitated to speak openly for fear of ridicule, something Fred notes is common among witnesses. He also discusses a website encounter map and highlights recurring patterns across Alaska: whistles, rock throwing, wood knocks, and vocal mimicry that suggest these accounts follow familiar themes. Bryophytes, AKA mosses, liverworts, and hornworts, are ubiquitous components of ecosystems around the world yet they are all too often underappreciated. Luckily, people like Brittney Miller are doing everything in their power to change that. What started with immense frustration turned into a life-long love affair with all things bryophyte. Join us for a wonderful deep dive into the secret world of these tiny plants. Man bija klasesbiedrs, kurš darbojās Rīgas pionieru pils skolēnu teātrī. To vadīja brīnišķīga sieviete - Astrīda Savisko. Režijas gēns varbūt vairāk dzima, mācoties Teātra fakultātē, Alfrēda Jaunušana kursā, jo es intuitīvi sapratu, ka neesmu no Jaunušana TOP aktieriem. Man gribējās kaut ko darīt pašam, pierādīt pašam. Tas bija ļoti stilīgi, man jāsaka. Viņš visu laiku mēģināja to neievērot, nobāzt malā. Atgādini mums par to laiku mazliet!
Botanizing is a skill set that, like muscles, must be exercised regularly. Whether just starting out or a seasoned specialist, botanical ID takes repetition. That doesn't mean it has to be dry or boring! My guests today are Dr.'s Ben Goulet-Scott and Jacob Suissa of Let's Botanize. When they aren't teaching about and researching plants, they are producing lots of great videos helping to connect people to plants. Most recently, they have published a book titled "Let's Botanize: 101 Ways to Connect with Plants" with the goal of encouraging "readers to observe and appreciate the plant life around them, from their backyard to their commute." Join us for a fun look at why they wrote this book and how it can benefit newcomers and professionals alike. Journey back in time some 60 million years to the Cenozoic with Dr. Ellen Currano by looking at fossil leaves. Aside from just being cool, leaf fossils can tell us a lot about the ecology of long extinct ecosystems. For instance, leaf margins can tell you about things like temperature while leaf size can tell you about precipitation. Also, looking at fossilized insect damage can reveal important insights into how climate influences herbivory. Join us for a deep dive on the myriad scientific insights fossil leaves can provide. Mosquito sprays and fogs only kill mosquitos, right? Wrong! The kinds of pesticides used to control mosquito populations are lethal to all manner of insects and other invertebrates. The use of these chemicals can have serious impacts on biodiversity and their marketing doesn't tell this side of the story. Join me and Dr. Aaron Anderson of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation as we look at the science of these pesticides and what you can do in your yard and in your community to improve conditions for insect diversity. Where in the world am I? In San Diego, talking about Oslo Part 1 Welcome back to the Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast. I had my second solo 90-day journey around the world, and I'm excited to connect with fellow travelers and share experiences. The FAQ is from Amara, who wants to travel more. She asked: How can I plan a trip like you do, Dr. Travelbest? Would I love to take some of the trips you have been on? I'm not sure where to start. I hear a lot from YOU, but how do I do it? Answer: Getting started is like this. Take small trips until you build up your travel muscles. I met a woman yesterday named Teresa who said she needs to read my books and here's why.. She's a single woman in her 70s and relies on her grown children for travel assistance. But they don't always want to go on the same trips as mom. So Teresa needs to manage her travel. I also think she needs to organize her phone apps so she can find the ones she needs quickly. If this is you, stick around. Some of this will flow into your DNA. I know it. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today is to plan a Step One Trip. That means you spend the night in a new city, by yourself. You book your room, meals, and itinerary yourself. You come home the next day, refreshed and confident that you can do anything! One night of travel can reset your travel confidence. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series delves deeper into Step 1 travel. Never heard of it? You will. It's been tried, tested, and trusted since 2020. You can find the series at the link in the description. See Book A for addressing this concern.. Find it on the website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. It's a several-part series. Today's special destination is Oslo, Norway, Part 1, the intro of Oslo. Today we're heading north — to Oslo, Norway, a city surrounded by fjords and forests. Oslo is one of Europe's most accessible and progressive capitals, offering a calm, safe, and modern environment — perfect for solo women travelers over 50, including those using wheelchairs or mobility aids. Norway is a stunning country with a vibrant population of around 5 million, comparable to Montana's population and area, stretching over 142,000 square miles. The current exchange rate is favorable at $10 USD for 10.1 NOK, making it an exciting time to explore this beautiful land! The renowned Hurtigruten line makes it easy to connect with major cities and highlights throughout the region. There are so many incredible places to visit, including these: - Hammerfest - The breathtaking Svalbard and the Lofoten Islands - Crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting Trondheim—particularly special for Karin - The scenic Flåm Railroad - The unique Vigeland Sculpture Park - The fascinating Fram Museum - Tasty cloudberries - The architectural marvel of the Oslo Opera House - The Well spa, a relaxing retreat at just $65 per day, open from 10 AM to 10 PM, and includes food - Convenient Bus 81 for easy travel Italian traveler Julius highly recommends the Paradox optical illusions exhibit in Oslo—what a fun experience! Additional must-see spots include: https://www.paradoxmuseumoslo.com/en/ - An impressive castle - The immersive Vikings exhibit that captivated Debbie and Erik from Toronto, Canada, whom I had the pleasure of meeting on the train and spending the better part of the day with. https://www.science.org/content/article/thousand-year-old-viking-fortress-reveals-technologically-advanced-society - The Bergen Hurtigruten line - Stunning views of the Skagerrak Strait - Enchanting Troll Forest - The magical Aurora Domes - An informative visit to Oslo City Hall and the Nobel Peace Center - The enchanting Munch Museum featuring "The Scream." - The lovely Bygdøy neighborhood You pronounce Bygdøy (a peninsula in Oslo) roughly as "BIG-day" (or "BIG-oy"), with the 'y' sounding like the 'i' in 'big' or 'ee' in 'see', and the 'ø' sounding like the 'i' in 'bird' or the 'u' in 'fur', making it close to 'BIG-doy' or 'BÜGD-oy' in Norwegian, but 'Big-Day' is a common English approximation. For an unforgettable adventure, the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour can be completed in just 2 to 3 days. Don't miss the dazzling Lofoten Islands, the majestic western fjords, and the charming Longyearbyen in Svalbard, along with Trondheim! Get ready for a fantastic journey through Norway! . - Library - Ibsens Gate - Tysnes Festival: A nearby island with many summer music events. People in Norway typically take two months of vacation. Education and healthcare are publicly funded through high taxes, which support strong economic conditions. Activities and locations: - Cable car to Mt. Ulriken - Royal Gamlehaugen Castle and Park - Kayaking On my First Day in Oslo, I arrived at the Train station and found my hostel on Karl Lagerfeldsgate Street - Oslo K7 Hostel: There were minor issues, such as being under construction, but it wasn't a bad experience. My initial Activities included: - Swimming in the sea with Nina from South Korea - Visiting the Opera House, the Munch Museum, and the library - Tasting hot dogs and even shopping for underwear. https://www.visitnorway.com/places-to-go/eastern-norway/oslo/oslo-opera-house/ Art, Architecture, and the Waterfront Start your day at the Oslo Opera House, an architectural masterpiece that rises from the fjord like a glacier. The sloping white roof is fully wheelchair-accessible, with gentle ramps leading to panoramic views of the harbor and the city skyline—a truly unique experience. https://www.visitoslo.com/en/articles/the-harbour-promenade/ From there, take a leisurely roll or stroll along the Harbor Promenade, a flat, scenic walkway that connects many of Oslo's major attractions. Stop by the MUNCH Museum, dedicated to artist Edvard Munch, whose "The Scream" is on display here. The museum is fully accessible with wide galleries, elevators, and a riverside café for a light lunch. https://www.munch.no/en/ In the afternoon, visit Akershus Fortress. While some cobblestone areas can be uneven, the main paths and museum sections are accessible, and the views of the Oslofjord are worth the effort. End your first day at Aker Brygge (BRU-geh), a lively waterfront district filled with accessible restaurants and outdoor seating for watching the sunset. Brygge, spelled, B R Y …..(Norwegian/Danish for "jetty" or "quay") is pronounced roughly like "BRÜ-geh" (German ü sound, short 'e' at the end) in Norwegian or "BRŒK-eh" (like 'brok' with a soft 'eh' sound) in Danish, involving a rolled 'r' and a rounded vowel, similar to the start of "burger" but with a distinct "oo" or "uh" vowel sound before the 'g' and 'e'. https://www.visitoslo.com/en/activities-and-attractions/boroughs/aker-brygge-tjuvholmen/ My missteps: High prices were not expected I was not fully prepared for the high costs of dining and transportation in one of Europe's priciest cities. Many travelers like me mistakenly expect prices to match other European capitals. To make the most of my time, I purchased a 24-hour Oslo Pass for convenient access to public transport and popular attractions. Plus, I used a refillable water bottle and enjoyed picnic meals from local grocery stores and bakeries.
Plant poaching is a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide and it doesn't get the attention it deserves. While the act of poaching plants from the wild ravages species and ecosystems alike, what happens to plants after the poachers have been caught? That is exactly what we are talking about in this episode. Director of Horticulture for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Raj Brown joins us to explore how they ensure that poached cycads, cacti, and other succulents can continue to contribute to plant conservation and education efforts.
Lion Diet vs. mer fleksibel nullkarbo – hvem trenger hva?Nok proteiner og fett gjør deg stabilt mett. The Devonian Period was for plants what the Cambrian Period was for animals. Land plants really started to experiment with new forms of growth some 380 million years ago which led to the establishment of the first forests on Earth. We revisit a conversation with Dr. Chris Berry who was part of the team that recently discovered the oldest fossil evidence of forests. As you are going to hear, these forests were very different from the ones we know and love today. This episode was produced in part by Matthew, April, Dana, Lilith, Sanza, Eva, Yellowroot, Wisewren, Nadia, Heidi, Blake, Josh, Laure, R.J., Carly, Lucia, Dana, Sarah, Lauren, Strych Mind, Linda, Sylvan, Austin, Sarah, Ethan, Elle, Steve, Cassie, Chuck, Aaron, Gillian, Abi, Rich, Shad, Maddie, Owen, Linda, Alana, Sigma, Max, Richard, Maia, Rens, David, Robert, Thomas, Valerie, Joan, Mohsin Kazmi Photography, Cathy, Simon, Nick, Paul, Charis, EJ, Laura, Sung, NOK, Stephen, Heidi, Kristin, Luke, Sea, Shannon, Thomas, Will, Jamie, Waverly, Brent, Tanner, Rick, Kazys, Dorothy, Katherine, Emily, Theo, Nichole, Paul, Karen, Randi, Caelan, Tom, Don, Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

In this episode, Derek and Conrad sit down with Danish stand-up comedian Mikkel Klint Thorius, one of the sharpest, most fearless voices in Danish comedy, to talk about the jokes behind the jokes, the culture that shapes them, and why Denmark works precisely because Danes refuse to think it does.Mikkel shares how he first stepped on stage at age 10, thanks to an unusually supportive teacher. Since then, his path from suburban kid to national headliner has been fueled by curiosity, self-deprecation, and a sharp instinct for cutting through Danish hypocrisy. You'll hear Mikkel's take on:Why Danes complain their way into a better societyHow Danish comedians “tear their own people a new one” - lovinglyHis new show, Nok om mig (Enough About Me)Balancing comedy with new fatherhood and personal boundariesThe art of pushing audiences to the edge and pulling them backIt's a conversation about comedy, culture, criticism, and the strange Danish superpower of never being satisfied, delivered with the honesty and humor that make Mikkel one of the most compelling Danish comedians working today.➡️ This is part one of our conversation. Heat stress is a major component of plant health and it in growing more and more timely each year. Understanding how plants do or do not tolerate heat can teach us a lot about not only individual species, but communities and habitats as a whole. Joining us to talk about this is Dr. Brad Posch who is trying to understand the consequences of heat stress at the leaf level. Deserts present a unique set of challenges to plants, especially when you are trying to restore them to the landscape. Drought, heat, soil salinity and more can make desert plant restoration seriously challenging. Luckily, Ali Schuessler and her colleagues at the Desert Botanical Garden are working hard to understand if soil microbes like fungi can help put ecosystems back together. Join us for a fascinating look at this process. One of the biggest hurdles to native plant gardening is sourcing native plants. Whereas nurseries are starting to fill the demand, it is nevertheless difficult to keep up with demand. Sourcing seed from the wild is a major part of this process, but how do we do it ethically? Stripping native plant populations of their seeds isn't good for the habitats they comprise so this is where groups like the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank (MARSB) come in. Their mission is to conserve and wisely manage the Mid-Atlantic Region's wild seed resources, through scientific sampling, ethical collection, banking, and curation, and to encourage and actively contribute to the development of the Native Plant Material supply chain throughout the region. Join me and their Native Seed Collection Coordinator John Price as we discuss the process behind what it takes to achieve this mission and some of the major struggles they face. Microbes are everywhere and studying them isn't always easy, but microbial ecology is a vitally important field. Microbes influence the world around them in numerous ways and trying to understand how they do that with plants is where people like Dr. Leonora Bittleston come in. Join us as we explore the leaf microbiomes of sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and various species of pitcher plants (Sarracenia, Nepenthes, and Cephalotus) and learn just how fractal community ecology truly is! Jason and Jeff chat about the "circular" AI deals, whether AI stocks are just hype, and what it would actually take for this bubble to keep inflating. In this episode, we ask:Are AI stocks dangerously overvalued? What are these "circular deals" between companies like Nvidia, AMD, and OpenAI? Is this AI rally just like the dot-com bubble? Will AI lead to massive job losses, or will it just change what our jobs look like? Where will all the energy come from to power AI? (And what does this mean for nuclear power?) Fallen leaves provide habitat to countless organisms and maintain crucial ecosystem processes. At the same time, convincing people to keep leaf litter on the landscape is a serious challenge. Leaving the leaves needs effective advocacy more than ever and that is where people like National Wildlife Federation Naturalist David Mizejewski come in. With October being Leave the Leaves Month, David and I take a deep dive into not only why it is an important practice but how we can all be better advocates for creating habitat. Galls are among the most remarkable biological structures on our planet. The organisms that produce them are also extreme diverse and contribute a bewildering amount of biomass to their habitats. Some of the most fascinating gall makers are the gall wasps. This group of organisms is still woefully understudied but people like Dr. Louis Nastasi are trying to change that. Join us as we take a deep dive on gall wasps that specialize on herbaceous plants like the rosinweeds (Silphium spp.) and learn what these amazing little insects can teach us about biodiversity and evolution. Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) is a foundational species in the ecology and economy of much of western North America. It also faces numerous threats. From invasive grasses and mega wildfires, it is important that we learn how to better restore sagebrush and the habitat it provides. That is where people like Dr. Trevor Caughlin come in. Join us as we look at how he and his lab are leveraging new technologies to help understand sagebrush and move the needle on helping to restore it. Ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora) has captured the imaginations of many a hiker and can you blame them? What is not to love about a parasitic plant that bucks all the traditional plant trends? For as charismatic as this ghost pipe is, we still have a lot to learn about it. For instance, what has largely been considered a widespread single species turns out to by two. Join me and Ashley Keesling as we explore what it takes to uncover cryptic Monotropa diversity and what her research can tell us about its evolution and ecology.
