    Alex Bazhinov – Lumin

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 12, 2022 41:44

What's it all about? I love this stuff!! Smart grids for the home, community and beyond. I also love when entrepreneurs from a fossil fuel, or ‘dirty' world see the light and create great cleantech businesses. Never has energy been a bigger topic in the average household. The silver lining in the present energy and inflation crisis is that cleantech solutions make even more financial sense, as well as reducing carbon emissions. I talk to Alex about his business, his technology and the future of the Grid. About Alex Bazhinov:  An inventor and entrepreneur, Alex is driven by the vision of the energy grid that encompasses the many distributed energy resources. He had the idea for Lumin while tending to his first start up, DreamPower, which he founded at the University of Virginia's iLab while earning his graduate degree at UVA's Darden School of Business. Alex hails from Moscow, Russia, where he held senior finance positions in global firms–spending six years at Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest nickel and palladium producer, and as CFO at the global manufacturing conglomerate, Sandvik. Alex's passion for a business challenge is aligned with his concern for the planet, having witnessed first-hand the negative impact of fossil fuel production around the world. When not chasing patents, Alex is busy at home with three young children and looks forward to his next sailing trip with his wife and first mates in training. About Lumin: Lumin® is the pioneer and market leader for responsive load management, adding exceptional value to residential microgrids by balancing home energy supply and demand. Lumin helps homeowners automatically or manually control their personal microgrid and enhance and protect their investment in solar PV and energy storage. What's it all about? Disruption, I love cleantech disruption, and if ever there was a market that needed disruption it was car rental. On so many levels. And that is exactly what Aidan McClean has done. We talk about that, but also the transition from corporate to start-up life, the challenges of starting from scratch, fundraising, hiring, family life, EV and Clean Energy myths and host of other topics in this fascinating chat. My first podcast recorded in a Tesla Model 3 too. About Aidan McClean:  Aidan McClean is an entrepreneur and clean technology investor who co-founded the world's first all-digital all-electric car rental company, UFODRIVE. He is passionate about exposing the truths beyond the hype around the rise of electric vehicles. His extensive research led to him writing his explosive book ELECTRIC REVOLUTION, published in March 2022. A keen cyclist and outdoorsman, Aidan was not an early adopter or advocate for electric vehicles, or particularly aware of environmental matters. However, the more he researched air pollution, climate change and the impact of fossil fuel-powered vehicles, the more passionate he became about the role electric vehicles will play in averting the impending climate disaster. About UFO Drive Aidan left behind a successful 25-year career in the financial services sector in 2017 to found UFODRIVE with his business partner and COO, Renaud Marquet. UFODRIVE was born out of a desire to help accelerate the move to clean mobility and a passion for great customer experience, guided by the following principles: easy booking; no queuing; no paperwork; great cars; transparent, all-inclusive, simple pricing; no confusing insurance options; no refuelling; and great value for money. McClean and Marquet set out to examine the car rental business in detail and understand what customers really want. In tandem they studied the coming revolution in electric cars. By combining the smartphone revolution with the coming electric car revolution, UFODRIVE has developed something unique. Its car rental location - the ‘UFO Landing Bay' - is where customers can arrive and drive – all with just their smartphone. UFODRIVE now has 18 locations across 8 countries in Europe with many more opening, including in North America and beyond. In February 2022, UFODRIVE announced a $19m series A investment round, led by Hertz. Following blind-tests of the UFODRIVE platform, the global car rental giant had decided that it was the future of direct-to-car, contactless, electric car rental. Hertz will use the UFODRIVE Software as a Service (SaaS) platform for the end-to-end management of its new fleet. What's it all about? At last. With caution and compliance being followed, live events are back. I expect very many of the Leaders in Cleantech audience are familiar with the all things clean mobility and energy Youtube Channel Fully Charged. As well as having over 800,000 subscribers and 2 million monthly views, the Fully Charged team have also been running fantastic events, in the UK and Austin, Texas. Then Covid interrupted that flow. Now they're back, starting in the UK in September 2021. I speak to Fully Charged Founder and host Robert Llewelyn (TV actor/presenter and Red Dwarf cult hero) and my good friend Dan Ceasar (CEO and now also a presenter) to look forward to what we can expect at this event, and other international events to follow. About Robert Llewellyn:  Robert Llewellyn is a British actor, presenter and writer, famous for his thirty-year stretch as the rubber-masked mechanoid Kryten in the much-loved science fiction comedy, ‘Red Dwarf'. With his interest in engineering, Robert then turned his hand to presenting the long-running TV gameshow, ‘Scrapheap Challenge' and also ‘How Do They Do It?' and ‘Carpool'. In 2010, after being blown away by early Electric Cars, Robert launched Fully Charged, a YouTube channel focussing on the future of electric vehicles, of all shapes and sizes, and clean energy. Fully Charged has exceeded 55 million views around the world and Robert was recently acknowledged as ‘Tech Legend' at the T3 Awards. About Dan Caesar:  Clean Energy promoter since 2005, Electric Car driver since 2015, Dan has 25 years' experience in digital, events and media. He's worked with, or on, the following in that timeframe: Accelerating Clean Technologies, Ceres Power, CORGI, Department of Energy & Climate Change, Energise Communications, Homebuilding & Renovating Show, Solar Media, Wolseley Plc; Renewables Roadshow, Renewables Awards, Renewable Heat Incentive Roadshow, Energy Storage Alliance, Energy Saving Home at the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show, Installer/Green Installer Magazine, House of the Future/Installer LIVE and Place Magazine. About Fully Charged: The origins of Fully Charged lay in the question, ‘is it possible for humans to no longer need to burn things to live, to work and to travel?' An unachievable destination perhaps, but an important direction of travel as the world responds to air pollution and climate breakdown. Our recent Fully Charged survey shows that our audience want to live and work in buildings, and travel in vehicles that don't cost the earth. Fully Charged exists therefore to educate, encourage and explain to its viewers that a very high percentage of the energy that the global population demands can and should, come from ‘clean' sources, like solar, wind and energy storage. In short, we would like the world to… STOP BURNING STUFF Social links:  Fully Charged Live UK: https://fullycharged.show/events/fully-charged-live-2021/ Fully Charged on Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/robert-llewellyn-s-fully-charged-show/ Fully Charged Website: https://fullycharged.show/ Fully Charged YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/fullychargedshow About David Hunt David Hunt is a prominent figure and thought leader in the cleantech sector. What's it all about? I was delighted when the Fifth Wall people reached out about the podcast. For some time I've wanted to address areas of the climate challenge, and areas of technology that are hugely important, but don't often get much press or attention, including on this podcast. In particular the Built Environment is of enormous importance to us all on many levels, it is of course where we live and work, and because of that impacts not just our immediate lives, but as you will hear, contributes far more to carbon emissions than transport, which gets most coverage at present. Greg has a great background, including reporting directly to Elon Musk at the Boring Company and Neuralink. Take a listen. About Greg Smithies:  Greg is a Partner at Fifth Wall, where he co-leads the Climate Technology Investment team. Toddington's is a fascinating story, if you want to know about his childhood of TV powered by Solar in the deserts of Bahrain, or why he's named after a service station, listen to our first conversation (episode 15- link below), but on this episode we focus on the concept of ‘Sun to wheel', using solar power and batteries to power fast charging of electric vehicles through Electric Forecourts and Electric Highway hubs. The Gridserve story is a great one, enjoy the episode. About Toddington Harper Toddington is a second-generation solar energy and energy storage professional, whose parents pioneered some of the world's first commercial deployments of solar energy and battery storage systems more than 45 years ago. He has spent virtually his entire career focused on delivering sustainable energy solutions, including creating five successful sustainable energy and low carbon businesses which he has led as CEO over the last 19-years. Prior to establishing GRIDSERVE Sustainable Energy Ltd, Toddington was co-founder and CEO of BELECTRIC UK (2010 & 2011 solar world market leader), responsible for the development, construction and financing of c.350 MWp of utility scale solar farm & solar rooftop projects, including a 3.5MWp 20-acre solar rooftop project for Rolls-Royce. At BELECTRIC UK Toddington built a multi-award winning team that delivered a fully integrated development, construction, financing, operation, maintenance, asset management solar energy & energy storage business. The business was successfully sold to RWE Innogy (largest European utility) in December 2016. Toddington created GRIDSERVE to deliver sustainable energy and move the needle on climate change. GRIDSERVE's first major success was winning the highest price battery storage enhanced frequency response contract with National Grid, where GRIDSERVE was awarded one of only seven successful contracts out of 208 tendered. Since then GRIDSERVE has grown from strength to strength. In 2019, against the odds of a year dominated by Brexit, GRIDSERVE pushed through, pioneering and delivering the UK's largest and most technically advanced hybrid solar projects, and becoming the UK solar energy and technology market leader. About GRIDESERVE GRIDSERVE® is a tech-enabled international sustainable energy business, whose purpose is to #deliver sustainable energy and move the needle on climate change. We develop, build, own and operate ‘sun-to-wheel' hybrid solar, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging critical power infrastructure. What’s it all about? Green Hydrogen! I’ve been aware of Graham and the work of ITM for some time, since meeting their Germany team at Power to X event in Dusseldorf, and seeing the scale of their recently expanded manufacturing capacity, I thought it would be a great time to have CEO Dr Graham Cooley on the podcast. Hydrogen is still in some ways contentious, but as I’ve said many times, it’s about the right tech solving the right problem. There is much to be done to replace grey/dirty hydrogen with green hydrogen, and it was fascinating to hear Graham’s take on this. About Graham Cooley:  Dr Graham Cooley joined ITM Power as CEO in 2009. ITM Power was the first hydrogen related company to be listed on the London Stock Market and has been developing electrolyser equipment for over 20 years. Graham started his career in the power sector in 1989 joining the CEGB and became Business Development Manager at National Power plc and then International Power plc developing energy storage and new generation technologies. Before joining ITM Power Graham was CEO of Sensortec Ltd, founding CEO of Metalysis Ltd, a spin out from Cambridge University and founding CEO of Antenova Ltd. Graham has a PhD in physics, an MBA and is a Fellow of the Institute of Metals, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM). Graham also sits on a number of industry bodies and is a member of the UK Government’s Hydrogen Advisory Council. About ITM Power: ITM Power plc manufactures integrated hydrogen energy solutions for grid balancing, energy storage and the production of renewable hydrogen for transport, renewable heat and chemicals. ITM Power plc was admitted to the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in 2004. In October 2019, the Company announced the completion of a £58.8 million fundraising, including an investment by Linde of £38 million, together with the formation of a joint venture with Linde to focus on delivering renewable hydrogen to large-scale industrial projects worldwide. ITM Power operates from the world's largest electrolyser factory in Sheffield with a capacity of 1GW (1,000MW) per annum. What’s it all about? Going Double Unicorn in 5 years, and still knowing you are still only at the beginning of the journey! I speak to tech founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Greg Jackson about how he used tech as the platform to disrupt one of the industries most resistant to, and in need of disruption- energy supply. With a focus on technology solving problems, and driving down costs, AND a focus on creating cultures which support and empower people to be their best and most creative. I hope you enjoy this slightly longer than usual episode. About Greg Jackson:  Greg is an experienced digital entrepreneur, passionate about making the green energy revolution affordable through technology. He’s founded a number of successful businesses, including e-commerce company C360, built HomeServe’s innovation business and is an angel investor in a wide range of tech start-ups. He also served as Director of several innovative businesses, including Zopa, the world’s first peer to peer lender, which has now lent almost £2bn fairly and responsibly whilst generating excellent interest rates for lenders. Greg founded Octopus Energy in 2015. It uses technology to be highly efficient – empowering customers with a full digital experience, and then using the same systems to provide the highest standards of support to its customers by phone, email and chat. This technology allows Octopus to challenge normal energy models, bringing transparent, low pricing to new and loyal customers. Octopus is a recognised innovator, delivering time-of-use tariffs at scale, driving EV adoption and helping make the smart grid a reality. About Octopus Energy In the UK, Octopus now stands at 2 million customers, growing by 2500-3000 per day, and is the only energy supplier recommended by consumer champions Which?, for four years in a row. Following significant investment from Tokyo Gas and Origin Energy in December 2020, Octopus became a tech ‘double unicorn’ valued at well over £2 billion. With operations in the US, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, Octopus expects to expand its platform into many more markets over the next few years. What’s it all about? Flow batteries have had their technical and commercial challenges over the years, so it’s good to see that the technology is really starting to get traction in that 6-12 hour storage category. It’s also good to hear a good traditional ‘started in my garage’ cleantech start-ups story, just watch for the EPA. This week I talk to Craig Evans about scaling a the flow battery technology and company of ESS Inc. About Craig Evans:  Craig Evans is the President and CEO, and a founder of ESS Inc. Having started ESS from his garage in 2011, he led the company to the commercialization of the Iron Flow Battery system in 2016. Prior to ESS, Craig was the Director of Design & Product Development at ClearEdge Power Inc. His team designed the ClearEdge5, a 5kW combine-heat-and-power fuel cell system, which was successfully commercialized in 2010. This product received both CSA International certification in North America and KNREC certification in Asia. Craig began his career at United Technologies Corporation (UTC) where he held technical leadership positions in their Fuel Cell business and, prior to that, as a project engineer in the Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine business. In 2006, He was awarded the distinguished George Mead Award, the highest honor for individual engineering achievement at UTC. Craig Evans has authored over 15 patents and patent applications. He holds a BS in Aerospace Engineering and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University, an MS in Finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A from Carnegie Mellon University. About ESS: ESS’s mission is to bring to market the cleanest, lowest-cost long-duration energy storage systems. Which are the catalyst for a sustainable energy future. Established in 2011, ESS Inc. manufactures low-cost, long-duration iron flow batteries for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications requiring 4+ hours of flexible energy capacity. Our long-duration energy storage platforms, the Energy Warehouse™ (EW) and Energy Center™(EC), use iron, salt, and water for the electrolyte, and deliver an environmentally safe, long-life energy storage solution for the world’s renewable energy infrastructure. Based in Wilsonville, Oregon, ESS Inc. was founded by a team with deep experience in fuel cells, electrochemistry, advanced material science and renewable energy. After five years of intensive innovation, engineering development and rigorous testing and validation, with the backing of ARPA-E and others, the company began shipping turnkey energy storage solutions that allowed companies and municipalities to control their own energy future in 2015. One of the biggest challenges I face is trying to keep up with all the great books my guests recommend as part of the show. One that I absolutely loved and found incredibly useful was The Grid: The fraying wires between Americans and our energy future. After the recent black outs in Texas I thought it a great time to speak with the author Gretchen Bakke, and ask why that happened, what needs to change, and what opportunities that creates for cleantech start-ups, scale-ups and VCs. I’m delighted that Gretchen accepted my request and joins me on the podcast this week. About Gretchen Bakke:  Gretchen is interested in what people do when the systems they rely upon stop working. Whether speaking of the end of political systems like communism, infrastructural systems like the electric grid, economic systems like whaling, energetic systems like fossil fuels, or cultural systems like the contemporary university what unites my work is an abiding concern for both the inventive creativity and the normative impulses that systemic collapse begets. What is the nature of renewal, she asks, and what do people, diversely, make of things when all that is solid fades unexpectedly into air. About Grid- The Fraying Wires Between Americans and Our Energy Future: “A remarkable achievement. Bakke deftly shows us how a system most of us are happy to ignore–the electrical grid–is both inseparable from everything we think of as civilization and on the verge of complete failure.” Paul Roberts, author of The End Of Oil and The Impulse Society. “This book, about our aging electrical grid, fits in one of my favorite genres: ‘Books About Mundane Stuff That Are Actually Fascinating.’ … even if you have never given a moment’s thought to how electricity reaches your outlets, I think this book would convince you that the electrical grid is one of the greatest engineering wonders of the modern world. I think you would also come to see why modernizing the grid is so complex and so critical for building our clean-energy future.” - Bill Gates, “My Favorite Books of 2016 Social links:  Gretchen Bakke on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gretchen-bakke-485067135/ Gretchen Bakke Website: http://bakkeconsolidated.org/about.php About Hyperion Executive Search: Hyperion are a specialist executive search firm working with some of the most innovative cleantech companies in the world, helping to find extraordinary talent to enable their growth and success. What’s it all about? Wireless Charging!! A concept that blows the mind of some, and yet it’s here and in operation. I met Andy Daga at a conference we were both speaking at, and I’ve wanted to get him onto the podcast ever since. From working on the Space Station, to working on irradicating fuel stations, Andy has a fascinating background, and company doing amazing things. I hope you enjoy the episode. About Andy Daga Andy is the founder and President and CEO of Momentum Dynamics. Andy’s fascinating story takes him from his birthplace of Brooklyn, NY, through Ithaca NY where his family developed the best Italian Restaurant in town through Hawaii, degrees in structural and civil engineering, architecture and space science and technology, ground-breaking work at NASA and his current role at Momentum Dynamics. Prior to founding Momentum Dynamics, Andy was a leading consultant to the aerospace industry and contributed to the design of the International Space Station solar power array system, the Mars Pathfinder program, and future mission planning studies with NASA and the US Department of Defense. Andy will admit that this layered journey wasn’t fully planned, but nor did it happen by accident: as a child, Andy would travel with his family from his home in Brooklyn to visit their extended family in Philadelphia, PA. This route took him through New Jersey and past the bleak refineries of Route 95. As a lover of architectural beauty, the outdoors and being obsessive about ‘all things efficiency’, the New Jersey oil refineries were the antithesis of everything Andy wanted the world to be. Fast forward to Andy’s time at NASA. He came upon the idea of inductive charging while mulling on ways to save cable weight on the International Space Station and future Mars missions. Why employ heavy cabling to carry electrons when it could be done efficiently through a vacuum or even the air itself? Out of this thought was born Momentum Dynamics. Through his varied experiences Andy has developed a strong capacity to identify engineering talent and manage multidisciplinary engineering and business teams. Andy is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) where he serves on a number of standards committees. He believes that every precious piece of our finite resources should be fully valued and carefully spent. He envisions a world of zero emissions, zero cables and zero wasted miles doing anything but making our lives better. He is a devoted husband, family man, polymath and entrepreneur. He is passionate about his dogs and his team at MD - perhaps in that order. He is still working to make the world a better place, one electron at a time. About Momentum Dynamics Momentum Dynamics develops and produces wireless charging systems for the transport industry. The company is based in Malvern, Pennsylvania and employees over 60 engineers, technicians and scientists. The company as deployed wireless systems operating in the United States and Europe. The company’s vision is to increase the adoption of electric vehicles by improving the cost and time efficiency of the EV charging infrastructure and at the time rid the world of charging cables. That the cleantech industry is so dynamic is one of its biggest appeals, and its biggest challenges. At Hyperion our goal is to help the world’s best cleantech companies find the talent to achieve their goals and ambitions, and to help founders towards their desired exit. I interviewed LImejump founder, and former CEO Erik Nygard on a previous episode, at the time Hyperion were supporting him to hire a COO. That process went well, and Cat Newman was hired into the role, so well in fact that she has recently been promoted to CEO as Erik moves on to new pastures, after their acquisition by Shell. It was great to talk to Cat about the challenges of moving from corporate to start-ups, about building structure and process for growth, about diversity and so much more. I hope you enjoy the episode. About Catherine Newman Catherine joined Limejump in February 2020, initially to run the Commercial and Trading teams as COO. In July 2020, Catherine moved into the role of CEO with plans to drive the company’s growth towards becoming the largest transformational player in the global renewable market. Previous to Limejump, Catherine spent 11 years at Gazprom Marketing and Trading. During this time Catherine was in a variety of roles – most noteworthy being COO of Trading and Director of Global IT and Delivery – she also chaired the operating committee. Prior to this, Catherine worked at BP. Even though Catherine has worked in the energy trading space for over 20 years, her career started in bioinformatics at Pfizer – she also spent time enjoying the dotcom bubble. This initial career choice followed her BSc (Hons) in Genetics and MSc in Bioinformatics in 1998, both from the University of Manchester. After the dotcom bubble burst, Catherine moved into energy consultancy where she spent time at most of the major energy players across Europe. In her spare time Catherine enjoys family life, keeping fit, gardening and cooking. She is a mental health first aider and is a strong advocate for keeping ‘the balance’ right in life. After last week’s episode we return to the ground but stay with eMobility. Last mile deliveries have never been more needed, as we’re currently so reliant on home deliveries. It’s also fair to say cities, mayors and citizens are quite liking the clean air and lack of both air and noise pollution, I can only expect the successes of Voltia and others in this space will continue. That said, when I first spoke to Juraj some time ago, it was his entrepreneurial story that stood, out. We discuss both in this episode. About Juraj Ulehla Juraj Ulehla, a former investment banker who specialized in risk management when working for international banks, is the Co-Founder and CEO of Voltia. He holds a PhD from the University of Economics Bratislava. Prior to leading Voltia, Juraj focused on solar power plant development and was instrumental in building up Voltia’s predecessor Greenway Operator (GWO), together with his co-founder and co-investor Peter Badik, who heads Voltia’s sister company Greenway Infrastructure (GWI). About Voltia Voltia is a European e-mobility specialist based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Launched in 2015, with the mission to help make commercial e-mobility effective and affordable, it supports OEMs by broadening the usability of their mass-market electric LCV models. Voltia’s approach is to add value in terms of application-specific re-design for different purposes. It provides development know-how, vehicle structure engineering, prototyping, production set-up, and sales & marketing support. It has clients in 11 European countries. More than 500 Voltia e-vans already operate successfully in large urban environments, such as London, Paris, Nice, Dortmund, Tallinn or Bratislava. As you’ll know I feel a fair amount of guilt over the amount of flying I typically do. Not an issue at present, but as we discuss on this episode, despite the present situation, aviation is on a fast-upward trend, and has a huge environmental impact. So it was a pleasure to speak to Val Miftakhov to see just how close we are to electric flight, at least on a regional level. It was also interesting to hear his thoughts on hydrogen in transport generally, and why he feels aviation is the area where it can, and does, work. About Val Miftakhov Val Miftakhov is Founder & CEO of ZeroAvia, a company developing the World's first practical zero emission aviation powertrain. Val is an avid helicopter and airplane pilot, and a serial sustainable transportation entrepreneur - his previous company eMotorWerks has developed the World’s leading platform for EV battery aggregation to provide grid services, and was acquired in 2017. Prior to that, Val held a number of senior business and product positions at Google and McKinsey & Company, and was a nuclear researcher at Stanford Linear Accelerator. Val holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University, Masters in Physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and was a two-time winner of Russian Nationwide Physics competitions. About ZeroAvia ZeroAvia is producing the world’s first practical zero emission aviation powertrain, initially targeting 9-19-passenger airplanes to start replacing dirty jet fuel. Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable aviation by giving aircraft customers and airframe manufacturers a zero- emission option that serves the most common airline trips. We do this by designing and producing hydrogen-fueled powertrains for the aviation industry. Currently, we have the largest zero emission aircraft in the world flying today using no fossil fuels.
