Shoot us a Text.Episode #1038: Today we're talking about the expected surge in auto dealership M&A activity, Hyundai's latest software update that simplifies EV charging across major networks, and Tanger's decision to launch its back-to-school campaign early in response to ongoing tariff concerns.Show Notes with links:Though Q1 saw a dip in dealership buy-sell activity, The Presidio Group sees the rest of 2025 heating up. With election season uncertainty in the rearview, dealers may be ready to get back to the negotiating table.Q1 had 82 transactions involving 106 dealerships, down from 90 deals and 175 stores last year.Election year uncertainty slowed activity, but momentum is now rebounding with Presidio saying the pipeline is “robust” and expecting strong summer/fall dealmaking.Presidio President George Karolis said that tariffs are adding complexity, especially around brand valuation and sourcing strategies. However, many dealers are already looking past tariffs, and there are more buyers than sellers in the current market.“Certainly, [tariffs have] come up. If anything, maybe we're buying a little bit of time just to see what happens over the next 90 days before we finalize some transactions,” said Sonic Automotive President Jeff Dyke.Hyundai EV drivers just got a serious charging upgrade. With tighter app integration and support for plug-and-charge at Tesla Superchargers, the Ioniq lineup is catching up to the Tesla standard in user experience.New software upgrades bring MyHyundai app support for Tesla, ChargePoint, EVGo, and Ionna.Plug-and-charge is now available on Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, and future EVs—just plug in and go.App features include route planning, charger location, and direct in-app payments.Older Hyundai EVs can access Superchargers with an adapter; however the Kona EV is not yet supported. The upgrade aims to make EV charging “as easy as gassing up.”As tariffs loom large, outlet mall giant Tanger is speeding up its seasonal strategy. The company's early back-to-school campaign kicks off June 1, tapping into consumer concerns over rising prices and potential supply shortfalls.Tanger CEO Stephen Yalof says early shopping means better deals and availability. This year's campaign targets 10 million TangerClub members with urgent messaging and marks a pivot from last year's late-July start.Other retailers like Fashion Nova and Beis are also urging pre-tariff purchases.“If they can make decisions early and shop early, then they can take advantage of getting the products they want at the price they want,” said Yalof.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
As the presidential inauguration loomed on the horizon in January this year, the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Loan Programs Office (LPO) published a “year-in-review” article, highlighting accomplishments from 2024 and looking ahead to the future. It noted that the previous four years had been the most productive in the LPO's history. “Under the Biden-Harris Administration, the Office has announced 53 deals totaling approximately $107.57 billion in committed project investment––approximately $46.95 billion for 28 active conditional commitments and approximately $60.62 billion for 25 closed loans and loan guarantees,” it said. Much of the funding for these investments came through the passing of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The LPO reported that U.S. clean energy investment more than doubled from $111 billion in 2020 to $236 billion in 2023, creating more than 400,000 clean energy jobs. The private sector notably led the way, enabled by U.S. government policy and partnerships. “There were 55 deals that we got across the finish line,” Jigar Shah, director of the LPO from March 2021 to January 2025, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast, while noting there were possibly 200 more projects that were nearly supported. “They needed to do more work on their end to improve their business,” he explained. That might have meant they needed to de-risk their feedstock agreement or their off-take agreement, for example, or get better quality contractors to do the construction of their project. “It was a lot of education work,” Shah said, “but I'm really proud of that work, because I think a lot of those companies, regardless of whether they used our office or not, were better for the interactions that they had with us.” A Framework for Success When asked about doling out funds, Shah viewed the term somewhat negatively. “As somebody who's been an investor in my career, you don't dole out money, because that's how you lose money,” he explained. “What you do is you create a framework. And you tell people, ‘Hey, if you meet this framework, then we've got a loan for you, and if you don't meet this framework, then we don't have a loan for you.” Shah noted that the vast majority of the 400 to 500 companies that the LPO worked closely with during his tenure didn't quite meet the framework. Still, most of those that did have progressed smoothly. “Everything that started construction is still under construction, and so, they're all going to be completed,” said Shah. “I think all in all, the thesis worked. Certainly, there are many people who had a hard time raising equity or had a hard time getting to the finish line and final investment decision, but for those folks who got to final investment decision and started construction, I think they're doing very well.” Notable Projects When asked which projects he was most excited about, Shah said, “All of them are equally exciting to me. I mean, that's the beauty of the work I do.” He did, however, go on to mention several that stood out to him. Specifically, he pointed to the Wabash, Montana Renewables, EVgo, and Holtec Palisades projects, which were all supported under the LPO's Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program, as particularly noteworthy. Perhaps the most important of the projects Shah mentioned from a power industry perspective, was the Holtec Palisades endeavor. Valued at $1.52 billion, the loan guarantee will allow upgrading and repowering of the Palisades nuclear plant in Covert, Michigan, a first in U.S. history, which has spurred others to bring retired nuclear plants back online. “[It's] super exciting to see our first nuclear plant being restarted, and as a result, the Constellation folks have decided to restart a nuclear reactor in Pennsylvania, and NextEra has decided to restart a nuclear reactor in Iowa. So, it's great to have that catalytic impact,” said Shah.

Electric Vehicles are bad business. To boost sales in a market lacking a competitive edge, the government has stepped in with subsidies, tax breaks, and rebates as well as a mandate requiring 35% of all new sales be zero-emission vehicles. The government is replacing competitive prices and market performance with an ideology. In an attempt to maintain sales and meet the mandate, Ford has been price slashing causing them to lose $1.32B on their EV business just in the first quarter of 2024. Ford lost $65,272 per EV sold, the cost equivalent of a Mercedes Benz E-class sedan. Losing billions year over year has caused EV shareholders and investors to bolt. EV charging companies ChargePoint Holdings, Blink Charging, and EVgo had share price drops in December 2023 of 74%, 67%, and 21% respectively. To assuage shareholders, GM's Mary Barra explained their profits were coming from the sale of gas vehicles, undermining the purpose of the mandate and proving EVs not to be a profitable business. The American people cannot be forced to switch to EVs, and automakers should not be punished for something outside of their control. The government is fighting a losing economic battle with a doomed product. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coffeewithcascade/message

Welcome to Wednesday as we talk about a big eclectic partnership, a little electric car, and an alliance that attempts to keep AI safe. Show Notes with links:Two major OEMs are both partnering to expand their charging networks across the US. GM is partnering with EVgo and Pilot and Ford will partner with Ecel Energy to provide a total of over 30k charging stations for commercial and residential drivers.GM plans to support the installation of 25 locations and 100 chargers before the end of the year and an additional 200 locations in 2024.The chargers will be co-branded “Pilot Flying J” and “Ultium Charge 360,” reflecting the two companies that will be funding the project.Ford is partnering with Xcel Energy to install 30,000 EV charging ports for fleet customers by 2030.“While other charging providers battle for market share and go through turmoil. Ford is a trusted resource with more than 120 years of experience,” Dave Prusinski, global chief revenue officer at Ford Pro, said. “Yet today we're reinventing ourselves daily and running at startup speeds.”Fans of small Italian vehicles rejoice as a revamped Fiat 500e is set to return to the U.S. in early 2024. The tiny vehicle boasts a 149-mile range, a significant increase from its previous 84 miles.Powered by a 42-kWh lithium-ion battery, the 500e includes a range of driving modes and safety features, like automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The little vehicle weighs 3000 pounds and even welcomes drivers with a digital tone that, according to the company, "sets the tone for an immersive Italian experience."Customers can buy the car from the Fiat Live Store without going to a dealership where they can interact with a “Fiat Genius” "The 2024 500e is a modern, tech-forward take on a beloved classic... Try not to smile when you drive this car," says Fiat CEO Olivier Francois. In a significant move for the AI industry, Meta and IBM have joined forces to form the AI Alliance, a collective effort to promote open-source AI development. This initiative includes major partners like NASA, Intel, and Yale University. The Alliance's agenda includes developing benchmarks for AI creation, building a catalog of vetted tools, and advocating their use among developers.Efforts will also be directed towards educating the public and policymakers on AI, along with launching initiatives for safe AI development.Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs, Meta noted when talking about the desire to have AI be open sourced, "We believe it's better when AI is developed openly — more people can access the benefits, build innovative products and work on safety."Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Sons of Speed Publisher Paul Herrold sits in for Jill this week. Paul and Tom opened the show talking about the discontinued Fiat 500X and related Jeep Renegade small crossovers. Tom asked Paul if he thought Jeep's recent sales decline came—at least in part—as a result of the brand's small, too-conventional crossovers, such as the Renegade, Compass, and Cherokee. Paul talked about four new Sons of Speed videos available for viewing at WeAreMotorDrive.com. The videos feature lap time at Road America race track, and include the Toyota GR Corolla, Volkswagen GTI, BMW M2, and Toyota Supra. Following up on Jill's EV charging issues from a week earlier, Tom shared a tale of similar frustration, including broken Evgo charging units—which were listed as operational on the provider's app—and Electrify America's over-hyped “Super Fast” charging. In the second segment Paul and Tom welcome Ram Communications Manager Trevor Dorchies to the show. Trevor updated the hosts on product in the Ram pipeline, including the redesigned 1500 pickup, the RAM REV electric pickup, and the extended-range plug-in-hybrid Ram Ramcharger. Also discussed is the new, ultra-luxury Ram 1500 Tungsten. In the last segment Paul is subjected to Tom's “Best Mileage” quiz, which includes a surprising Burger King bonus question. The hosts wrapped up the show by discussing why Tom's test vehicle, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, makes Tom want to shoot a water buffalo.
