The 2025 Lucid Gravity marks a major step for Lucid Motors as it enters the hotly competitive luxury electric SUV market. With a bold aerodynamic design, three-row practicality, and up to 828 horsepower, the Gravity aims to combine performance and family-friendly utility in a premium package. By doing so, it seeks to upset the luxury SUV applecart as it rockets to the top of the pack. This past week, host Jack Nerad was one of a select few journalists to drive and road test the Gravity for the first time. During his stint behind the wheel, he sampled the Gravity's dynamic split personality. At once, it is a highly competent performance vehicle and a fully utilitarian SUV that can tow, haul and convey seven adults at a rate few are accustomed to. Powered by dual motors producing up to 828 horsepower and 909 lb-ft of torque, the Gravity can accelerate to 60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds. Its air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and adjustable ride height make it a surprisingly agile and adaptable vehicle, particularly given its 6,048-pound curb weight, while a Terrain Mode and 6,000-pound towing capacity further expand its versatility. But is it a vehicle you'd want to live with day-to-day, given the elevated level of several of its rivals? Nerad will offer his views. In our other road test, co-host Chris Teague takes one of the nation's most popular plug-in hybrid vehicles through its paces as winter turns to spring in Maine. As unlikely as it might seem, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is among the best sellers among the much-misunderstood roster of PHEVs. Its credentials are strong, but, again, is it a wise choice given its premium price over other Wranglers? Teague and Nerad will weigh in. When it comes to family vehicles, the Hyundai Palisade has gained a reputation as a thinking person's choice. Now, Hyundai has just introduced the all-new 2026 version, and Nerad went behind the scenes for an exclusive interview with Hyundai Product Planning Manager Melvyn Bautista to take a deep dive into the vehicle. It is both Easter week and New York Auto Show week, so we have a lot of news from each. Easter in Moab, Utah, is one of the biggest off-road gatherings of the year, and Jeep and Ford are there showing off concept vehicles. We have the details. Several new models have been introduced in and around the New York show, and we'll tell you about cool vehicles from Kia, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in this episode. Used car buyers might be in for a price shock in the next few weeks, and it has nothing to do with tariffs. We'll tell you more and, of course, we'll have the latest auto tariff news for you too. Austin Nerad 2007-2025Our beloved dog, Austin, went to heaven this week. We miss him so. NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURES FOR NOVEMBER 2024The November new car registration figures were released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and they're not great. A 1.9% decline in registrations overall, but BEVs increased again, with over 14,000 extra registrations than for the same month in 2023, amounting to a 25.1% market share for the month. Petrol and diesel fell, as did PHEVs. What will be concerning is that Fleet numbers fell, on top of Private continuing to decline. Electric vehicles. Conventionally fueled vehicles. Hybrids. On The Fleet Success Show, Josh Turley and Marc Canton have talked about them all. In this episode, they're diving into the raw numbers to show you the (not always beautiful) truth about the costs of EVs. Josh and Marc dispel the myths around assumed cost savings when switching from fueled vehicles to electric to give fleet managers the data they need to make decisions with their eyes wide open. Pulling information from places like KBB, Edmunds, and the EPA, Josh and Marc compare conventionally fueled vehicles (CFVs) to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Shoot us a Text. We're together in-person this Thursday morning as we reflect on the 100 years of Carter Myers Automotive. Today we're talking about how plug-in hybrids may not be the transition to EVs that we thought, how Tesla may have already exhausted its Cybertruck reservation list and how more Americans are concerned about their credit card debt.Show Notes with linksMany have pointed to the plug-in hybrid as the ideal transition vehicle from ICE to BEV. But a new study from J.D. Power suggests that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) may not be the electric vehicle solution consumers are looking for.PHEV satisfaction scored 669 on a 1,000-point scale, lower than BEVs (716) and premium EVs (738).PHEVs account for just 1.9% of U.S. vehicle sales, while BEVs hold 9.4% and conventional hybrids 10.7%.High purchase and maintenance costs are major drawbacks, with compact PHEVs averaging $48,700 compared to BEVs at $36,900.As of August 2024, there are 41 PHEV models in the U.S., compared to 39 hybrid models and 60 BEV models."Dealers are the frontline educators in the EV space," says Brent Gruber of J.D. Power, encouraging them to bridge knowledge gaps around issues like range, charging, and cost.Tesla's Cybertruck has seen impressive sales, with over 27,000 units sold in the U.S. in 2024. However, the company appears to be running through its massive reservation list faster than anticipated, with new buyers getting their trucks much sooner than expected.Tesla sold 16,000 Cybertrucks in Q3 2024, following 11,000 in the first half of the year.Despite claims of up to 2 million reservations, buyers can now get a Cybertruck within 60 days of ordering. Some early reservation holders report being offered additional trucks much earlier than anticipated. The base model, originally priced at $39,900, is no longer available, with current models starting around $100,000.A new survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals that many Americans are growing more concerned about their ability to manage credit card debt. The likelihood of missing a payment in the next three months has climbed to 14.2%, the highest since April 2020.Delinquencies on credit card accounts over 90 days past due reached 9.1%, along with a rise in bankruptcy filings.U.S. household debt now totals $17.8 trillion, with credit card balances hitting $1.14 trillion, up almost 6% year-over-year.Middle-income households are feeling the squeeze, with 44% reporting more financial worries than last year."For people with good incomes and good credit scores, things are going well... Now the other half, that can be a much more troublesome situation," noted Bankrate analyst Ted Rossman.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Tom Bodrovics welcomes back Doomberg, author of the Doomberg Substack, for a discussion on the science hype cycle and its impact on investments. The science hype cycle refers to the persistent overhyping of scientific innovations, such as solid state batteries, fusion, room temperature superconductors, and cancer cures, which often take decades to materialize. Despite progress, solid state batteries face inherent challenges due to safety concerns and complexity. Samsung's recent announcement of a silver-intensive solid state battery may boost silver demand but diminishes its near-term relevance for investors. Next, the conversation shifts to the automobile industry, focusing on plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). PHEVs reduce regional gasoline consumption efficiently, but China's competitive edge in manufacturing affordable cars, driven by access to intellectual property, lower labor costs, and less stringent regulations, poses a significant challenge. Consumers favor affordable PHEVs over luxury BEVs, believed to be saturated in demand. The discussion touches upon the carbon footprint of battery production for electric vehicles and the importance of recycling them. The focus should be on addressing pollution rather than just reducing carbon emissions. China's lenient environmental regulations give it an edge in industries like magnesium production. Doomberg advocates continued investment in nuclear, natural gas, and existing hydroelectric power due to their reliability and suitability. He dismisses fusion reactors as unnecessary distractions from proven nuclear technologies. Small modular reactors and thorium reactors hold potential but lag behind large modular reactors, which offer known designs and predictable supply chains. The conversation addresses the Russia-Ukraine conflict's implications for energy markets, Russia's role as a nuclear superpower, and the consequences of NATO involvement. Doomberg expresses concerns about the conflict's outcome and its impact on gold as a neutral reserve asset amidst geopolitical tensions and the bifurcation of the world into G7 and BRICS. He concludes by advocating for thoughtful consideration of military conflicts and their consequences, and introspection about the wisdom of engaging in war. The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Happy first week of the month (and happy birthday to our very own Paul Daly). Today, we're covering Toyota's concern over consumer demand, the fastest EV charger ever and robotaxis rolling on.Show Notes with links:Toyota continues to project a measured future for BEVs, with North America CEO Ted Ogawa estimating they'll constitute just 30% of U.S. sales by 2030, diverging from more ambitious EPA targets."I know that EPA is now reconsidering what the regulation level should be,” said Ogawa in an exclusive Automotive News interview. “However.. our starting point is what the customer demand should be… We are respecting the regulation, but more important is customer demand."The EPA's light vehicle standards as proposed require 54-60% BEV penetration by 2030. Current analysis doesn't include PHEVs, but the agency plans to include it in the final rule.2024 is the starting year for Toyota's “multi-path” strategy, offering different levels of electrification in America, with Ogawa calling the shift “one of my challenges this year.”Toyota plans to use credit purchases to comply with regulations, while prioritizing investment in EVs and hybrids, including a $13.9 billion battery complex in Liberty, N.C."Wasted investment is worse than the credit purchase," said Ogawa.Gravity Mobility, backed by Google, has launched the fastest public EV charging solution in the U.S.The startup has introduced 24 chargers in New York, currently only open to fleet operators. The chargers have a 500 kW capacity, capable of charging 200 miles in 5 minutes, equating to 2,400 miles of range per hour. The company's chargers are the size of a carry-on suitcase and Gravity plans to manufacture and deploy thousands of chargers annually, with further sites in development beyond their initial Midtown Manhattan location. Most EVs currently have a charging speed cap of 350 kW, but future models are expected to support faster charging capabilities.Competitor ChargePoint announced a product capable of 500 kW charging for two vehicles simultaneously, while Tesla Superchargers offer up to 250 kW.The self-driving robotaxi is not dead yet as Waymo has received approval to operate its vehicles up to 65mph on highways in parts of Los Angeles and the Bay Area, following a California regulator's decision. The company plans a "careful and incremental" expansion without immediate highway service plans, amid safety concerns and high-profile crashes involving autonomous vehicles. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved Waymo's expansion, dismissing requests for evidentiary hearings and citing continuous technology and safety improvements.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
Will there ever be another standard of measure for EVs besides straight-line performance? Also, it's hard to build cars, as Apple found out. Zach has a wife and son who kicks the back of the front seat – what car is fun but has a large backseat area? Then, Tomas in the UK has a growing family and wants a commuter + long-distance champ, but can it still be entertaining? The 2024 Blazer EV is the first Chevrolet vehicle on General Motors' new Ultium electric platform, which is shared by the Honda Prologue EV and Cadillac Lyriq. We offer our first impressions of the new Blazer, including its driving dynamics, build quality, and why GM ordered dealers to stop selling it. We also discuss the future of internal combustion engines and whether or not EVs will dominate the car market in the next decade. Also, we debate whether the 2025 Toyota Camry hybrid is worth the wait, or is the recently updated 2024 Honda Accord hybrid. We're at CES in Las Vegas, where much of the hype has been around introducing artificial intelligence into your car's infotainment system. But is AI in your vehicle actually going to be useful, or is it just hype? The EV market is maturing, and we got to see where automakers are going to take the unique abilities that electric vehicles are afforded with fewer moving parts and more space-efficient layouts, including a rebrand of the minivan form factor. We also discuss why hydrogen might be a viable alternative to battery-electric vehicles in the future, and try to figure out why anyone would want a large LED screen built into their bumper.
