The growth comes at a steep price: the company burned $3.8 billion in cash in 2025, announced its third layoff in three years (cutting 12% of US salaried staff), and is banking on a new ~$50,000 midsize SUV later in 2026.EU PETROL AND DIESEL SHARE SLIDES AGAINEU new car registrations fell 3.9% in January 2026, but the real story is the collapse in fossil fuel powertrains: the combined petrol and diesel share fell from 39.5% a year ago to just 30.1%, down from 48.7% in January 2024, with petrol registrations dropping 28.2% year-on-year across France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Pure BEVs took a 19.3% share (up from 14.9% twelve months prior), and electrified powertrains collectively accounted for around 68% of all January registrations.COMMISSION DELAYS "MADE IN EUROPE" PROCUREMENT ACTThe European Commission's Industrial Accelerator Act — which would add a "European preference" to public procurement, including a 70% EU-origin threshold for electric vehicles — has been delayed for a fourth time, now targeting a 4 March presentation. The UK has raised concerns that any protectionist tilt could damage cross-Channel automotive supply chains, given the EU is the largest export market for UK-built cars.VOLVO RECALLS 40,323 EX30S OVER FIRE RISKVolvo has issued a formal recall of 40,323 EX30 Single-Motor Extended Range and Twin-Motor Performance vehicles over a battery overheating risk — caused by lithium plating growth in cells from Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Co — that could trigger a fire. Volvo will replace the battery modules free of charge, but has disputed Reuters' estimate that the replacements alone could cost around $195 million, while continuing to advise owners to cap charging at 70% until their vehicle is fixed.T&E PUSHES EU TO TOUGHEN CORPORATE EV QUOTASTransport & Environment, an NGO advocating for clean transport, is urging the EU to raise corporate fleet EV targets to 69% zero-emission vehicles by 2030 — well above the Commission's proposed 45% — while excluding PHEVs entirely, arguing that company car drivers rarely plug in and routinely exceed lab-test emissions figures. Corporate buyers account for roughly 60% of new EU car sales, and T&E says its stricter targets would deliver 1.9 million additional EU-made EV sales in 2030, versus 1.2 million under the current Commission plan, while redirecting €42 billion in annual fossil fuel company car tax subsidies toward EU-built EVs.VAUXHALL CONFIRMS ELECTRIC CORSA GSE FOR 2026Vauxhall has confirmed a fully electric Corsa GSE for 2026, the brand's first hot hatch in eight years and the second model under its revived GSE performance sub-brand. The car is expected to carry over the Mokka GSE's 276bhp front motor, 54kWh battery, Torsen limited-slip differential, and Alcon brakes — a combination that delivers 0–62mph in 5.9 seconds on the Mokka, matching the Mini Cooper Electric JCW.RENAULT TO BUY OUT FLEXIS PARTNERSRenault plans to take full ownership of Flexis, its electric van joint venture, by buying out partners Volvo Group and CMA CGM — part of a broader retrenchment under new CEO François Provost that also sees the Ampere EV and software unit folded back into Renault Group by as early as July 2026. The first Flexis product, the Renault Trafic Van E-Tech, remains on track for production at Sandouville before the end of 2026, with Renault Trucks distributing the van from 2027 under an existing light commercial vehicle partnership.LEPAS CONFIRMS L8 SUV FOR UK LAUNCHChery-owned Lepas has confirmed its L8 SUV as its first UK model, with a summer 2026 launch expected and full specifications still to come. The most likely powertrain is the plug-in hybrid system shared with the UK-spec Jaecoo 7 — a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and 18.3kWh battery delivering 56 miles of electric range and 204bhp total — with a pure EV variant expected to follow.HONDA ICON E: ELECTRIC SCOOTER HITS ¥220,000 IN JAPANHonda has launched the ICON e: electric scooter in Japan at ¥220,000 (~$1,435 / €1,350), undercutting its own petrol mopeds by around ¥20,000 and claiming 81km (50 miles) of range via a removable, swappable Mobile Power Pack e: battery. Accessible from age 16 under Japan's moped licence class — mirroring the EU's AM category — the ICON e: is designed for urban practicality over headline specs, and its sub-€1,400 price positions it well as European cities continue to tighten low-emission zones.

The ground just shifted under the auto industry, and we take you straight to the dealer floor to show what's really moving metal. With the $7,500 EV tax credit gone and emissions targets easing, automakers are recalibrating fast—dialing up hybrids, testing extended-range EVs, and even hinting at new life for V8 performance where demand is loudest. We connect policy changes to showroom choices, price pressure, and the practical hurdles that still stall EV adoption: high MSRPs, thin charging networks, and range that doesn't always meet real commutes. We break down why traditional hybrids are winning hearts and wallets right now. No plugs. Fewer compromises. Better fuel economy without changing habits. Then we dig into extended-range EVs, a sleeper category that pairs electric drive with an onboard generator to put range anxiety on ice while trimming complexity versus plug-in hybrids. PHEVs get a critical look too—those 30-ish electric miles sound great until your round trip or charger access says otherwise. Add in dealership intel on what sits, what sells, and how rigid trim bundles can stifle choice, and you've got a candid view of today's buying reality at the $50,000 average price point.Enthusiasts, we didn't forget you. We celebrate muscle car heritage with a tour of wagon-based builds that borrow glory from icons like the GTO, 442, and Chevelle SS, and talk about why sound, torque, and identity still matter in a multi-powertrain future. To round things out, we map a stack of Mardi Gras road trips across Texas—from packed Galveston nights to family-friendly boardwalks—because the best car talk ends with somewhere to go.If you love practical car advice with a pulse, hit play. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, visited Linamar, a Canadian company and global leader in advanced automotive manufacturing, to highlight the Government of Canada's new Automotive Strategy. The world is changing rapidly, fundamentally reshaping trade relationships and leaving economies, businesses and workers under a cloud of uncertainty. Canada's automotive industry is on the front line of this shift, with more than 90% of Canadian-made vehicles and 60% of Canadian-made auto parts currently exported to the U.S. The government is focused on what we can control—implementing a new industrial strategy. Canada is transforming the economy from one that is reliant on a single trade partner to one that is more resilient to global shocks—a stronger, more sustainable, more independent economy built on the solid foundation of strong Canadian industries and bolstered by diverse international trade partners. In parallel, the government is launching a national electricity strategy to leverage our energy advantage to provide clean, affordable and reliable power to Canadians. These shifts present a unique opportunity to transform Canada's auto industry to be less reliant on the U.S. and gas-powered vehicles. To that end, the government has introduced a new auto strategy that rewards the production of made-in-Canada vehicles and harnesses our world-class capabilities in artificial intelligence and technology expertise to build the cars of the future. This is a strategy that positions Canada to become a global leader in electric vehicle (EV) production. On February 5, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the following new measures: 1. To accelerate investment in Canada's auto manufacturing sector, the government will:allocate $3 billion from the Strategic Response Fund and up to $100 million from the Regional Tariff Response Initiative to help the auto industry adapt, grow, and diversify to new markets.harness the Productivity Super-Deduction and reduced corporate tax rates for zero emission‑ technology manufacturers to encourage investment in clean technologies and EVs.2. To rationalise emissions reduction policies to focus on outcomes that matter to Canadians, the government will:introduce stronger greenhouse gas emission standards for model years 2027–32. These standards will put Canada on a path to achieve a goal of 75% EV sales by 2035 and 90% EV sales by 2040—reducing our carbon footprint and securing Canada's global leadership in clean energy. These more stringent emissions standards will enable the Government of Canada to repeal the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard. This approach will allow manufacturers to use a wide array of technologies to meet the standards and respond to consumer preferences in the near term, while driving EV adoption over time.3. To build up a domestic consumer base and make electric vehicles more affordable and reliable, the government will:launch a five-year EV Affordability Program to lower the cost of EVs for Canadians and create a stronger domestic consumer market. The new $2.3 billion program will offer individuals and businesses purchase or lease incentives of up to $5,000 for battery electric and fuel EVs, and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids (PHEV) with a final transaction value up to $50,000 on cars made by countries Canada has free trade agreements with. To support the Canadian automotive industry, this $50,000 cap will not apply to Canadian made‑ EVs and PHEVs.enhance our national EV charging network through investments of $1.5 billion through the Canada Infrastructure Bank's Charging and Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure Initiative, making it easier and more convenient for drivers to charge their EVs across the country.4. To establish a comprehensive trade regime that strengthens the competitiveness of the auto sector, the government will:strengthen Canada's automotive remission framework to reward companies that produce and invest in Canada.maintain counter-tariffs on auto imports from the United States to ensure a level playing field for Canadian automotive manufacturers in the domestic market.build on its recently strengthened strategic partnership with the Republic of Korea by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen Canada Korea‑ industrial collaboration for future mobility. This builds on other MOUs that Canada has signed with global automakers to promote cooperation.focus on establishing a new strategic partnership with China, a global leader in EV manufacturing, to further diversify trade and catalyse new investment in the automotive sector. The recently announced partnership will look to drive new Chinese joint venture investment in Canada and allow for a fixed volume of Chinese EV imports into the Canadian market.[KP2]5. To protect Canadian auto workers and businesses from immediate pressures while helping them bridge them to the future, the government will:provide support to employees through a new Work-Sharing grant—preventing layoffs and supporting worker retention so businesses can plan for the future.establish a new workforce alliance of industry, labour and training partners to address bottlenecks and catalyse private investment.provide employment assistance and reskilling supports for up to 66,000 workers across Canada, including for displaced auto workers, through a $570 million investment. The government will leverage our new and existing trade agreements—including the recent EV arrangement with China—to catalyse massive new investment in the sector, diversify Canada's auto export markets and position Canada as a global leader in EVs. Canadian workers and industries are well equipped to seize this opportunity, and we are making generational investments in critical minerals, including those essential for batteries, to secure Canada's place in the world's most important supply chains. The choices made now will shape the Canadian auto industry for decades to come. By protecting the industry and incentivising automakers to build here, we are helping ensure that Canada's workers and businesses can transform to compete and win in this new global environment. These measures build on previously announced initiatives to help transform strategic Canadian industries, including steel and softwood lumber. Together, they form an ambitious industrial strategy that will build a stronger, more resilient, more independent Canadian economy and ensure workers and industries can bridge to that future and seize its opportunities. Canada is a nation of builders and our auto sector has grown and powered communities across the country for more than a century. The skills and dedication of Canadian auto workers is at the heart of this new strategy. Our new government's message is clear: Canada intends not only to keep building vehicles at home, but to shape the future of the industry with Canadian workers at its core.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.

Join Tony and April on the **Jeep Talk Show** flagship episode for a casual, fun catch-up chat after a three-week break! In this laid-back discussion, they dive into hot Jeep topics, share personal takes, and keep the laughs rolling. Key highlights include: - **Jeep's discontinuation of the 4xe plug-in hybrid models** (Wrangler and Grand Cherokee) for 2026 – why it doesn't bother April (old-school simplicity wins), range anxiety fears, charging challenges in rural areas, and how PHEVs sometimes traded capability for electrification quirks. - **Mud Terrain (MT) tires vs. lockers** – which upgrade to prioritize first? They agree: go tires first for better overall traction (rocks, mud, emergencies), then add lockers. April shares her approach of testing without lockers first to learn the Jeep's limits and reduce drivetrain stress. - **Ham radio vs. GMRS for emergency/off-road comms** – Tony questions if ham is phasing out with modern tech (satellites, internet), but April champions GMRS (easy, no test, family license, Midland's Jeep-friendly setups like the MXT series with integrated mics for tight dashes). Great for trails where cell service fails! - **Wrangler 392 pricing gripes** – recent price drops (like the 2026 Moab 392 coming in ~$20K cheaper), the thrill of that Hemi V8 roar, and why it's worth the premium (plus jealousy over friends' new ones). - **Off-road pet peeves** from the round table fireside chat crew: dropdown steps on rock sliders, loud concert-level speakers blasting music on trails, rear dual-exit exhausts getting mangled, oversized wheels, hitch sliders, and trail judgment. - Bonus: Tony plugs his new interview-focused show **Tony Muckleroy** (check it out on YouTube/Spotify for paranormal chats, preppers, and more wide-ranging topics). If you're a Jeep owner, off-roader, or just love the community vibe, this episode is full of relatable rants, practical advice, and good-natured banter. Hit play for trail stories, gear tips, and that classic Jeep passion!

Government grants and incentives have widened adoption, and zero-emission vehicles now account for over 22% of new cars registered in 2025, while diesel registrations plummeted to historic lows. TESLA TEASES OCTOBER 7 MODEL Y REVEAL Tesla released a teaser for an October 7 Model Y reveal, sparking speculation over a more affordable variant intended to boost sales momentum and address product aging. The event is pivotal as Tesla faces pressure from competition and expiring federal incentives; analysts expect production ramp-up of the lower-cost Model Y in Q4. TESLA GERMANY SEPTEMBER SALES AND BYD SURGE In Germany, BEV registrations rose 31.9% year-over-year, but Tesla's numbers fell 9.4% in September and halved since January, while Chinese rival BYD saw registrations soar beyond twenty-fold for the month. The rise of competitors and market diversification are accelerating electrification, prompting legacy automakers to refresh offerings despite Tesla's updated Model Y achieving stronger results in other parts of Europe. EUROPE EV SALES RISE IN AUGUST European plug-in vehicle sales climbed 36% year-over-year in August to about 246,000 units, outpacing overall market growth and raising BEV share to 21%. Popular models like Tesla's Model Y, Skoda Elroq, and Model 3 contributed to momentum, reinforcing investment in charging infrastructure and fleet electrification. FRANCE SEPTEMBER EV MARKET UPDATE France saw 140,090 total registrations in September with plug-in vehicles making up 29% of sales, as BEVs and PHEVs increased their market share compared to last year. The Tesla Model Y led the month's results with its best French volume in two years, pointing to strengthening Q3 demand for electrification despite a slight year-to-date shortfall. AUDI US EV SALES SURGE Q3 2025 Audi's U.S. EV sales leaped 232% to 18,071 units in Q3 2025, with electrics making up 39% of the brand's quarterly volume as the Q6 e-tron outsold its ICE sibling Q5. The shift signals consumer preference for electric variants, but ongoing growth depends on scaled production, dealer readiness, and effective ownership economics. CADILLAC Q3 EV SALES SURGE Cadillac delivered 18,383 EVs in Q3—a record since 2013—boosted by expiring tax credits, with electric models chosen by 40% of buyers in the period. Q3 EV deliveries rose 154% year-over-year, though upcoming quarters will test Cadillac's ability to sustain the momentum. BMW AND STELLANTIS MATCH FEDERAL EV CREDIT BMW and Stellantis are offsetting the loss of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit by applying equivalent discounts to eligible electric and plug‑in hybrid models. The offers, restricted to dealer inventory and requiring delivery by early November, are intended to prevent immediate price hikes and maintain sales amidst changing incentives. DACIA SPRING UPGRADED WITH MORE POWER AND LFP Dacia's upgraded Spring city car features new, more powerful motors and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that improves cost and safety while maintaining a WLTP range of 140 miles. The revised models, now quicker and more efficient, are priced from £15,000 to £17,000 and arrive early next year. SCANIA HIGH-FLOOR ELECTRIC COACH PLATFORM Scania has launched a high-floor battery-electric coach platform with up to 600 km range, supporting multiple body types and maintaining luggage space comparable to conventional coaches. The new platform comes with integrated smart charging services and aims to advance commercial vehicle electrification across Europe. KIA PV5: ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMERCIAL VAN Kia's new PV5 electric van, built on a dedicated E-GMP.S platform, offers multiple body styles, battery options up to 258 miles, and fast DC charging of up to 150 kW. Integrated fleet management and warranty features support commercial use, with mass production underway in Korea. ILLINOIS EV FAST CHARGING: $15 FLAT Universal EV Chargers now provide flat-rate, $15-per-session DC fast charging across Illinois, eliminating time-based pricing and surprise surcharges. Drivers use CCS or NACS connectors, scan to start, and benefit from predictable costs with a growing statewide coverage. RIVIAN ADDS LIDAR TO AUTONOMY PLATFORM Rivian will incorporate LiDAR sensors into its next-generation vehicles to bolster their autonomy platform, reflecting industry trends as costs for the technology decrease. Recent hires and tech stack updates align with CEO RJ Scaringe's statements about Rivian's long-term focus on advanced driver-assistance systems.

Europe led growth, North America hit a record as buyers rushed to secure tax credits, and China saw robust, if moderating, expansion, while BYD cut its sales target but expects significant overseas volume. FORD'S FOCUS-SIZED RECOVERY PLAN Ford will launch a new mid-sized crossover in 2027, built in Valencia, Spain, reflecting a shift toward affordable EVs following Fiesta and Focus factory closures. The model will compete directly with the likes of Tiguan and Sportage at a mid-£30,000 price point—aiming to recover relevance with lower emissions and competitive pricing without expecting past market share highs. EUROPEAN AUTOMAKERS SEEK 2035 FLEXIBILITY European automotive leaders are calling for flexibility in the EU's 2035 ban on petrol and diesel cars, citing tougher global supply chains and increased reliance on Chinese battery suppliers. Automakers advocate for hybrids and transitional support beyond 2035, while member states like Italy and France push for exceptions, highlighting the division over the full fossil fuel phase-out deadline. TOYOTA BUILDS EV SUVS IN KENTUCKY Toyota will begin producing its first electric vehicles in the U.S. next year, including two three-row SUVs at its Georgetown, Kentucky site, part of a $1.3 billion investment focused on domestic EV growth. The move aims to serve rising American demand, add jobs, and advance Toyota toward carbon neutrality by 2050, while balancing hybrids, plug-ins, and full EVs. STELLANTIS CANCELS ELECTRIC RAM 1500 REV Ram has scrapped its planned all-electric 1500 REV pickup in favor of a plug-in hybrid model, citing weak demand for battery-only trucks and financial constraints at Stellantis. The new Ram REV, featuring a gasoline generator with over 690 miles of range, appeals to users needing greater towing and long-distance capability, while Stellantis refocuses on hybrids and profitable platforms. NISSAN MICRA LIVE EVENT SHOWCASES NEW SUPERMINI EV Nissan unveiled its fully electric sixth-generation MICRA in Rotterdam, built on the dedicated AmpR platform, offering two battery sizes, 198–260 miles WLTP range, and advanced handling and tech features. Starting at £21,495 in the UK with government support, deliveries begin January 2026 as MICRA leads Nissan's European EV lineup expansion. GM REAFFIRMS EV-ONLY FUTURE, SLOWS TRANSITION GM CEO Mary Barra reaffirmed the company's long-term goal of going all-electric by 2035, positioning it as a strategic "North Star". However, she acknowledged that the full transition may take decades due to industry complexity and evolving market and regulatory challenges. AMAZON TESTS GM BRIGHTDROP DELIVERY VANS Amazon has started testing GM's BrightDrop electric vans alongside its existing Rivian fleet, part of its strategy to deploy 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. The pilot comes as GM faces production slowdowns, offering a chance to boost BrightDrop's visibility and demand while Amazon diversifies its supplier base. VOLVO CEO EXPECTS OTHER BRANDS TO FAIL Volvo recently rehired former CEO Håkan Samuelsson, who affirmed the inevitability of electrification and predicted only a few Chinese brands will dominate globally in the next decade. He expects legacy automakers will struggle, with survival dependent on agility and partnership with advanced firms like Geely, as newcomers like Tesla and BYD reshape the market. CHINA AUTO INDUSTRY THREAT TO GLOBAL MARKET Industry experts at the Detroit Automotive News Congress warned that U.S. automakers are underestimating the competitive threat posed by Chinese brands, whose EV market share in China surged to 50%. Fierce home competition is fueling aggressive export plans, targeting Europe, Mexico, and North America, with cost and technology advantages challenging established automakers. HYUNDAI-LG GEORGIA BATTERY PLANT STARTUP DELAY Hyundai and LG's Georgia battery plant faces a two- to three-month startup delay after a major U.S. immigration raid detained hundreds of workers, most employed by LG suppliers. Hyundai will offset production impact by sourcing batteries from other facilities while both governments negotiate skilled labor solutions for future projects. SCOUT CEO ARGUES FOR DIRECT SALES STRATEGY Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh stated the company will pursue direct sales, comparing traditional dealer model unfavorably to buying directly from Apple and advocating for a seamless brand experience. He dismissed dealers as a distraction, reinforcing direct-to-consumer as the company's strategic retail approach. MAINE DISTRICTS FACE ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS SERVICE ISSUES Maine school districts have seen electric buses sidelined due to unresolved service issues, with manufacturer Lion Electric's bankruptcy halting repairs and parts, leaving districts stuck with non-functional vehicles under federal grant terms. The state faces mounting frustration, a federal lawsuit against Lion, and reliance on emergency replacement options while the EPA oversees the troubled program.

JULY 2025 NEW CAR REGISTRATIONSNew car registrations fall, year-on-year, in July 2025 by 5%. Whilst the electric car grant is now available, which models are eligible and at what rate remains to be seen. This has had a knock on effect with registrations of EVs raising slower than expected. Welcome to Overdrive, the show that dives into the quirks, questions, and cultural shifts shaping how we move. Host David Brown is joined by Brian Smith, transport planner and original Overdrive contributor, for a jam-packed episode that blends industry news, thoughtful critique, and cheeky observations.
The 2025 Lucid Gravity marks a major step for Lucid Motors as it enters the hotly competitive luxury electric SUV market. With a bold aerodynamic design, three-row practicality, and up to 828 horsepower, the Gravity aims to combine performance and family-friendly utility in a premium package. By doing so, it seeks to upset the luxury SUV applecart as it rockets to the top of the pack. This past week, host Jack Nerad was one of a select few journalists to drive and road test the Gravity for the first time. During his stint behind the wheel, he sampled the Gravity's dynamic split personality. At once, it is a highly competent performance vehicle and a fully utilitarian SUV that can tow, haul and convey seven adults at a rate few are accustomed to. Powered by dual motors producing up to 828 horsepower and 909 lb-ft of torque, the Gravity can accelerate to 60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds. Its air suspension, rear-wheel steering, and adjustable ride height make it a surprisingly agile and adaptable vehicle, particularly given its 6,048-pound curb weight, while a Terrain Mode and 6,000-pound towing capacity further expand its versatility. But is it a vehicle you'd want to live with day-to-day, given the elevated level of several of its rivals? Nerad will offer his views. In our other road test, co-host Chris Teague takes one of the nation's most popular plug-in hybrid vehicles through its paces as winter turns to spring in Maine. As unlikely as it might seem, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is among the best sellers among the much-misunderstood roster of PHEVs. Its credentials are strong, but, again, is it a wise choice given its premium price over other Wranglers? Teague and Nerad will weigh in. When it comes to family vehicles, the Hyundai Palisade has gained a reputation as a thinking person's choice. Now, Hyundai has just introduced the all-new 2026 version, and Nerad went behind the scenes for an exclusive interview with Hyundai Product Planning Manager Melvyn Bautista to take a deep dive into the vehicle. It is both Easter week and New York Auto Show week, so we have a lot of news from each. Easter in Moab, Utah, is one of the biggest off-road gatherings of the year, and Jeep and Ford are there showing off concept vehicles. We have the details. Several new models have been introduced in and around the New York show, and we'll tell you about cool vehicles from Kia, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in this episode. Used car buyers might be in for a price shock in the next few weeks, and it has nothing to do with tariffs. We'll tell you more and, of course, we'll have the latest auto tariff news for you too. Austin Nerad 2007-2025Our beloved dog, Austin, went to heaven this week. We miss him so. NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURES FOR NOVEMBER 2024The November new car registration figures were released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and they're not great. Petrol and diesel fell, as did PHEVs. What will be concerning is that Fleet numbers fell, on top of Private continuing to decline. The recent Autumn Budget, presented by Labour's Chancellor Rachel Reeves - the first female chancellor to present a budget in a red box - introduces significant changes to vehicle taxation and incentives in the UK. Electric vehicles. Conventionally fueled vehicles. Hybrids. On The Fleet Success Show, Josh Turley and Marc Canton have talked about them all. In this episode, they're diving into the raw numbers to show you the (not always beautiful) truth about the costs of EVs. Josh and Marc dispel the myths around assumed cost savings when switching from fueled vehicles to electric to give fleet managers the data they need to make decisions with their eyes wide open. Pulling information from places like KBB, Edmunds, and the EPA, Josh and Marc compare conventionally fueled vehicles (CFVs) to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Shoot us a Text. We're together in-person this Thursday morning as we reflect on the 100 years of Carter Myers Automotive. Today we're talking about how plug-in hybrids may not be the transition to EVs that we thought, how Tesla may have already exhausted its Cybertruck reservation list and how more Americans are concerned about their credit card debt.Show Notes with linksMany have pointed to the plug-in hybrid as the ideal transition vehicle from ICE to BEV. But a new study from J.D. Power suggests that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) may not be the electric vehicle solution consumers are looking for.PHEV satisfaction scored 669 on a 1,000-point scale, lower than BEVs (716) and premium EVs (738).PHEVs account for just 1.9% of U.S. vehicle sales, while BEVs hold 9.4% and conventional hybrids 10.7%.High purchase and maintenance costs are major drawbacks, with compact PHEVs averaging $48,700 compared to BEVs at $36,900.As of August 2024, there are 41 PHEV models in the U.S., compared to 39 hybrid models and 60 BEV models."Dealers are the frontline educators in the EV space," says Brent Gruber of J.D. Power, encouraging them to bridge knowledge gaps around issues like range, charging, and cost.Tesla's Cybertruck has seen impressive sales, with over 27,000 units sold in the U.S. in 2024. However, the company appears to be running through its massive reservation list faster than anticipated, with new buyers getting their trucks much sooner than expected.Tesla sold 16,000 Cybertrucks in Q3 2024, following 11,000 in the first half of the year.Despite claims of up to 2 million reservations, buyers can now get a Cybertruck within 60 days of ordering. Some early reservation holders report being offered additional trucks much earlier than anticipated. The base model, originally priced at $39,900, is no longer available, with current models starting around $100,000.A new survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals that many Americans are growing more concerned about their ability to manage credit card debt. The likelihood of missing a payment in the next three months has climbed to 14.2%, the highest since April 2020.Delinquencies on credit card accounts over 90 days past due reached 9.1%, along with a rise in bankruptcy filings.U.S. household debt now totals $17.8 trillion, with credit card balances hitting $1.14 trillion, up almost 6% year-over-year.Middle-income households are feeling the squeeze, with 44% reporting more financial worries than last year."For people with good incomes and good credit scores, things are going well... Now the other half, that can be a much more troublesome situation," noted Bankrate analyst Ted Rossman.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Tom Bodrovics welcomes back Doomberg, author of the Doomberg Substack, for a discussion on the science hype cycle and its impact on investments. The science hype cycle refers to the persistent overhyping of scientific innovations, such as solid state batteries, fusion, room temperature superconductors, and cancer cures, which often take decades to materialize. Despite progress, solid state batteries face inherent challenges due to safety concerns and complexity. Samsung's recent announcement of a silver-intensive solid state battery may boost silver demand but diminishes its near-term relevance for investors. Next, the conversation shifts to the automobile industry, focusing on plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). PHEVs reduce regional gasoline consumption efficiently, but China's competitive edge in manufacturing affordable cars, driven by access to intellectual property, lower labor costs, and less stringent regulations, poses a significant challenge. Consumers favor affordable PHEVs over luxury BEVs, believed to be saturated in demand. The discussion touches upon the carbon footprint of battery production for electric vehicles and the importance of recycling them. The focus should be on addressing pollution rather than just reducing carbon emissions. China's lenient environmental regulations give it an edge in industries like magnesium production. Doomberg advocates continued investment in nuclear, natural gas, and existing hydroelectric power due to their reliability and suitability. He dismisses fusion reactors as unnecessary distractions from proven nuclear technologies. Small modular reactors and thorium reactors hold potential but lag behind large modular reactors, which offer known designs and predictable supply chains. The conversation addresses the Russia-Ukraine conflict's implications for energy markets, Russia's role as a nuclear superpower, and the consequences of NATO involvement. Doomberg expresses concerns about the conflict's outcome and its impact on gold as a neutral reserve asset amidst geopolitical tensions and the bifurcation of the world into G7 and BRICS. He concludes by advocating for thoughtful consideration of military conflicts and their consequences, and introspection about the wisdom of engaging in war.
