Original Air Date: November 2, 2022 ---- "Not only is it difficult for the person going through their mental health concern, but it's also really difficult to be a witness; and to not have the floor to say, "Oh, this is hard for me, too." Today we welcome Kara Bucci to the podcast! Kara is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist in the Hudson Valley region of New York and she is here to speak with Courtney about challenges and strategies associated with caring for someone with mental health issues. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI - nami.org) more than 20% of Americans experienced a mental health concern in 2020 (nami.org/mhstats, retrieved October 27, 2022). With nationwide stats suggesting that 1 in 5 individuals are living with a diagnosable mental health disorder it is easy to assume many of us have been impacted by this - in big and small ways - at some point in our lives. Of course, these impacts are more deeply felt when the individual is a friend, parent, child, or even colleague. Kara is here to help frame this experience through the lens of roles, responsibilities, and ultimately, limitations. She is also going to provide some ways of approaching these relationships with love, empathy, and compassion, and also with a view toward preserving our own wellbeing as caretakers. About our guest:Kara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of a small (but growing!) group practice called the Upstate Therapy Group located in Beacon, NY. Kara has been in private practice for 5 years, where she works primarily with adolescents and adults, in individual or group psychotherapy. Kara typically works with people who are going through difficult life transitions, struggling with anxiety and depression, and people who underneath it all, are looking to learn and explore themselves through the lens of a therapeutic relationship. Prior to working in private practice, Kara worked as a residential Counselor at Silver Hill Hospital, where she managed Transitional Living Programs for the Adolescent Program and the (now called) Psychotic Illnesses Program. While at Silver Hill, Kara went through the Foundations training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which was particularly helpful in helping develop the resilience skill set for higher risk patients. Kara is continuing her education as a candidate for the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Thanks for listening! Ben Tuff grew up splitting his time between Atlanta, GA and Jamestown, RI.He is one of six kids and has an identical twin brother named Chris. Ben's sport of choice was soccer and he played competitively for Lovett and his club team keeping the Tuff family legacy alive by playing goalkeeper. He attended Colby College where he met his now wife, Gretchen and treasured his times working at a sailing instructor and boat captain in the British Virgin Islands.Instead of playing soccer, Ben enjoyed skiing and playing recreational soccer and taking part in the all the other recreational activities that come with the college experience.Between Jamestown and the BVI, Ben developed a lifelong appreciation for the ocean.Ben is a lifelong educator and has had the privilege of working with hundreds of boarding students from across the world. Upon graduating from Colby, Ben became a teacher at two Junior Boarding Schools and two boarding high schools.Caught up in the pressures of boarding school life, Ben found that his dependence on alcohol steadily increased to an addiction. In 2012, Ben made the life-altering decision to break free of the hold that the addiction to alcohol had on him. After five weeks in the rehabilitation hospital Silver Hill, Ben was ready to head into the world without looking back.Despite not knowing how to swim, the sport of triathlon arrived quickly in his life. After seven years of competitive triathlon, Ben made the switch to marathon swimming. Despite not being able to swim a single lap, Ben discovered that with a little time, energy, and dedication, he could improve his distance. After many crossings from Newport, RI to Jamestown, RI on Save the Bay Swims, Ben throttled it up with the 12.5 Miles FKCC Swim Around Key West. After that, he couldn't stop and completed a 21-mile swim around Jamestown, a 19-mile swim from Block Island to Jamestown, and most recently swimming the length of Narragansett Bay by swimming 24 miles from Providence, RI to Jamestown, RI. Esteemed producer, Matt Corliss, chronicled Ben's journey to sobriety and the parallels of his recent swim. The film, “Swim Tuff: How I Swam my Way Out of the Bottle” is projected to be released Spring 2023.For Ben, swimming has become an outlet where he processes life's problems and appreciates the peace of moving in the water. Ben's goal of making this movie and getting the message of addiction out to the world is to destigmatize the topic while giving hope to those who suffer or knows someone who suffers from addiction. When not giving speeches or screenings of the movie, Ben lives in Peru, Vermont with his wife Gretchen and two children, Wyatt and Maisie.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ieaYrqYuIFc@ben.tuffhttps://www.facebook.com/BenTuff?mibextid=LQQJ4d

Also eating the right foods and taking specific vitamins can help as well.  Listen to this episode to get great tips on fighting those awful feelings that come with anxiety and depression... we get great advice from all of our guests on this subject who are in the backyard of Weston, Connecticut, Westchester County, NY as well as Boonton, New Jersey! https://uncorkingastory.com/author-services/conversation-with-a-desperate-man/https://www.yourdailydosetribe.com/Jim is the founder and chairman of the Fairfield County Bar Association's Wellness Committee, and is a frequent speaker on the topic of mental health in the legal workplace. On this episode of Hot Off the Press, Chef Pete sits down with his longtime friend and owner of Café Acadiana in Silver Hill, Alabama, Gerald Ardoin. Pete first met Gerald during the early days of "Panini Pete's" when Gerald worked as his local U.S. Foods sales rep. The youngest of six children, Gerald grew up in his family’s grocery business before his father purchased a “fried chicken and ice cream joint” in Opelousas, Louisiana in 1979, and reopened it as Ardoin’s Seafood. Gerald continued working in the family business until his father’s retirement in 1995 and, with the help of his father, opened his own restaurant in the same Louisiana area shortly after. In 2004, Gerald and his family moved to Baldwin County, Alabama, where he took a job as a sales representative with U.S. Foods. After 10 years with the major food distributor, Gerald and his wife, Cristina, renovated a building in downtown Silverhill and opened Café Acadiana in the heart of this little Mayberry-like Gulf Coast town in 2013, returning to what he loved best. The menu is a mix of All-American and seafood dishes including steak, burgers, po-boys, gumbo and fried, grilled, and blackened seafood, all with a Cajun flare. A local favorite, the Boudreaux’s Burrito is a crawfish, shrimp and crabmeat stuffing-filled burrito topped with a creamy crawfish and shrimp sauce. Three and a half years after first bringing a little Cajun cuisine to south Alabama, Gerald has expanded the restaurant, adding a catering service and selling his own Cajun spices and rubs. For more information visit www.datsgoodyeah.com or call (251) 945-CAFÉ. You can also connect with Cafe Acadiana on Facebook.
