Discover Lafayette is thrilled to welcome Kiki Frayard, founder of Kiki, a boutique store known for its exquisite selection of fine jewelry, fragrances, handbags, and other carefully curated items from designers across the world. While Kiki is known for offering unique designs, Kiki says, "Anybody can walk in to buy fun or lower price point jewelry at $75 to $250. We also offer jewelry up to $65,000." In addition to her successful retail business, Kiki recently ventured into children's literature with her book Lila Says No, cleverly illustrated by Aileen Bennett. Her passion for beauty and creativity extends beyond retail, as seen on her vibrant Instagram page, where she shares colorful and inspirational table settings for various events. Kiki, an Opelousas native, has strong ties to the Lafayette community. She is the sister of Marilyn Castle, retired 15th JDC judge, and Joan Dubuisson of Cox Business. She graduated from UL-Lafayette with degrees in Art History and English, initially intending to become an art teacher before discovering her passion for advertising and retail. Her career has been a fascinating journey, including stints as a nightclub singer in New Orleans, a radio advertising executive, and an ad agency owner. Working alongside advertising legend George Graham, Kiki honed her skills in creative writing and marketing, ultimately paving the way for her entrepreneurial success. Kiki opened her boutique in River Ranch after gaining invaluable retail experience from Molly Flanagan, owner of Molly's. She and her daughter, Katie, built the business together, expanding to Baton Rouge and establishing Kiki as a premier shopping destination. A life-changing car accident in 2007 prompted Kiki to embrace retail fully, leaving advertising to focus on her boutique. She and Katie meticulously designed the store, ensuring an elevated shopping experience comparable to high-end retailers in New York and beyond. Kiki says, "We knew we wanted to do something nice. We didn't want it to be a hodgepodge of display cases and just thrown together. We really wanted it to be the nicest store in Lafayette. "We had a vision of doing jewelry with designers in mind so that every case was dedicated to a designer. The handbags were displayed one on a shelf to make it seem really special so that everything seemed a little elevated. That worked when people walked in the store. Also, with most merchandise, if you don't turn it, you got to put it on sale, you've got to get rid of it, you got to turn. But jewelry isn't like that. We could have an expensive piece of jewelry and it could be there for two years, and then someone comes in and and buys it. So you don't have to discount quite as much. The same thing with perfume." Beyond retail, Kiki has made a mark in the Lafayette community. She played a crucial role in the development of Lafayette's downtown playground, recognizing its value in revitalizing the area. Her passion for community enrichment continues to shape her contributions to the city's cultural and economic landscape. Kiki's love for creativity extends to her personal life, where she enjoys setting stunning tablescapes for family gatherings. Her collections of fine china and linens reflect her impeccable taste and appreciation for beauty. Her foray into children's literature has been met with great enthusiasm. Lila Says No is resonating with parents and educators, with notable endorsements from child psychologist Carolyn Helm. The book received a glowing review rom Kirkus as "quirky and entertaining, with a kid and parent-savvy message." Kiki's deep admiration for children's literature and her collection of over 500 books inspired her to finally write her own story, with more books potentially on the horizon. Though retired from store ownership, Kiki remains an integral part of Kiki, still attending market trips and influencing the store's aesthetic.

Two decades before the Lindbergh baby became America's most famous missing child, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar, went missing in Opelousas, Louisiana, setting in motion one of the strangest kidnapping stories in the nation's history. In the summer of 1912, the Dunbar family took a trip to Swayze Lake in St. Landry Parish, where Bobby wandered off and disappeared. The boy's disappearance was followed by an eight-month search across the American south, until Bobby was ostensibly found in the company of William Walters, a handyman traveling through the Mississippi. Bobby's parents were elated to have their son back after such a long absence, but the problem was, very few people seem convinced that the boy was in fact Bobby Dunbar. After extensive news coverage of the search, Walters' trial for kidnapping, and the joyful return of Bobby to his family, interest in the case began to fade, but for the Dunbar family, questions remained about Bobby's identity. Had the Dunbars, in their desperation to find their son, unintentionally kidnapped someone else's child? Pat Mire, who founded Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival in 2006, joins Discover Lafayette, along with his wife, Rebecca Hudsmith, to discuss his career as a filmmaker celebrated for his authentic portrayals of Cajun culture. Since his early days as a filmmaker, Pat has been able to make a living solely by directing and producing films which resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and of various cultures. Cinema on the Bayou Festival was created in 2006 by chance, after the devastating damage wreaked by Hurricane Katrina upon New Orleans. "The National Film Board of Canada called me saying there was a US premiere of the documentary "Maroon," by famed Quebecois filmmaker Andre Gladu that was supposed to be playing at the New Orleans Film Festival. I was living in uptown New Orleans and we all had to leave. There was nobody living in New Orleans at that time in 2006.. And so I came here to Lafayette. There was no New Orleans. It was an opportunity. I decided we were going to pay for his hotel, fly him here, and pay a stipend. I said, I'm starting a film festival. That's how it started. I've worked with all the scholars here, including Barry Ancelet and Carl Brasseaux, to preserve our local culture." Since 2006, Cinema on the Bayou has presented hundreds of internationally acclaimed documentary, narrative fiction, animated and experimental films, with filmmakers in attendance from across the United States and around the world. The Festival is now unique among film festivals in the U.S. in that it also regularly screens a large number of French-language independent films and presents filmmakers from throughout the Francophone world.  Pointe Noire, a film the couple co-wrote and produced together, will premier on January 22, 2025, at the St. Landry Cinema in Opelousas as a feature film of the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival. Local talent, Andrew Morgan Smith, a veteran composer from Youngsville, was the composer for the movie's score. Cinema On the Bayou runs from Jan. 22 - 29, 2025. For Pointe Noire's premiere on Jan. 22, doors will open at 6 p.m. at St. Landry Cinema, 1234 Heather Dr., Opelousas, with a Red Carpet wine reception. The film will screen at 7 p.m. Following the film screening and Q&A, the after-screening reception for all attendees will be held at Cite des Arts, 109 Vine St., Lafayette. There will be a cash bar along with complimentary boudin and king cake. Tickets for the opening night film screening and reception are $20 per person and cna be purchased in advance at www.cinemaonthebayou.com. All-Access passes for the festival can be purchased at:  https://cinemaonthebayou2025.eventive.org/passes/buy Pointe Noire, shot throughout the Acadiana area, stars Canadian film stars Roy Dupuis and Myriam Cyr, and features Michael Bienvenu and Zachary Richard.  It tells the story of filmmaker and crawfisherman Louis Leger (Roy Dupuis) and criminal defense attorney Dolores Arceneaux (Myriam Cyr), who join forces in the Cajun prairie community of Pointe Noire in an effort to save the life of Joel Richard (Michael Bienvenu), a falsely accused man on Louisiana's Death Row. What follows is a search to find out what really happened 30 years ago when two people were killed on the night of the traditional courir de Mardi Gras. Along the way, Louis and Dolores uncover a hauntingly beautiful, isolated community suffering from secrecy and deceit, yet ultimately striving to achieve its own form of folk justice.   Pat's documentaries have been broadcast nationally on PBS, the Discovery Channel, and many more platforms, and have earned prestigious awards including the American Anthropological Film Festival's Award of Excellence. "A film is told three ways. There are three films in one film. It's what you write, what you shoot and what you edit... post production That's, to me, the lace and embellishment. The negligee you put on the film at the end is so important." His first film, Dirty Rice,

It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

There's a saying in show business: Every musician wants to be an actor. And every actor wants to be a musician. For a lot of people, either option would be a dream job. Especially if they grow up to be doctors or lawyers instead. But do lawyers want to be doctors? Do doctors want to be lawyers?  Maybe. Maybe not. Even if you join the bar. You can still work in health care. Just ask Jack McGee. Jack is an attorney. He got a law degree from Tulane. But he's not practicing law so much these days. Instead, he's running a plastic surgery clinic. McGee Plastic Surgery is the only clinic in Lafayette headed by a double board-certified surgeon. That would be Jack's wife, Dr. Catherine Link-McGee.  Jack runs the clinic's business operations. And he still puts his law degree to work in contract negotiations and other office matters. And there are plenty of office matters to attend to. Unlike many plastic surgeons, the McGee's take insurance. The start-up challenges are daunting for starting a mom and pop surgery center, Jack says. But McGee has built a strong client base, serving 400 patients with a full-time staff of three.  There's plenty of lawyering in health care. For a lot of folks, medical malpractice suits might come to mind. But it's a much bigger sector in the legal industry with a range of issues to be litigated, both literally and figuratively.  Berryl Broussard is currently the in-house counsel for the Teche Action Clinic, a federally qualified health center. That essentially means it's a special type of clinic designed to address health needs in places with few doctors and hospitals with services for uninsured and underinsured.  Teche Action offers pretty much everything a patient might need. Primary care, dental care, counseling and more. The challenge here is how to make an action clinic sustainable. By definition, they receive federal funding, but it covers just a portion of the action clinic's operating budget.  Berryl has long career in health law and is a certified health care compliance professional. She was born and raised in Opelousas.   Right now there are around 100,000 students in law schools around the country. Each year about 30,000 of those students graduate and become lawyers. Most of these folks start out in various types of legal positions - working in a law office – but after a few years a number of them find their way into other occupations, many in business. It's not necessarily that they don't like being a lawyer, it's because unlike other post-graduate studies - which focus in on a narrow specialty – law training ranges from a broad education in federal regulation to personnel skills required for client counseling. A law degree is kind of the Swiss Army pocketknife of post-grad education. Berryl and Jack's individual journeys after law school have taken them down a lot of interesting paths, with further directions to come.  Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. In July 2022, Jones spoke publicly against book censorship at a Livingston Parish Public Library Board meeting. After the meeting, multiple conservative organizations posted about Jones on their websites and social media pages. In 2022, Jones helped to create Louisiana Citizens Against Censorship, an organization in which she is executive director, as well as the Livingston Parish Library Alliance. Jones has lobbied against censorship legislation in Louisiana, specifically Louisiana Senate Bill 7 in 2023, to limit access to minors of material with "sexual conduct," and House Bills 414 and 545 in 2024, which would apply state obscenity law to libraries. South Louisiana Community College's ("SoLAcc") Anne Falgout, Director of Strategic Communications, and Lana Fontenot, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and External Relations and Executive Director of the College's Foundation, join Discover Lafayette to discuss the latest developments at SoLAcc and its recent rebranding. SoLAcc currently offers more than 50 programs, leading to associate degrees, technical diplomas, and certificates, to almost 12,000 students annually, at its campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, Morgan City, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville, and Ville Platte. The College also offers a wide range of non-credit instruction and training, for careers that need certification training such as power linemen, industrial scaffolding, and commercial driving, which students can complete in under six months. Following an Academic Blueprint prepared five years in advance, SoLAcc endeavors to build educational programs that fit the needs of each community they serve. Many people in our region don't have high school diplomas, and SoLAcc steps up to offer Adult Basic Education Services, assisting individuals in passing the High School Equivalency Exam ("HiSET") which replaced the former GED exam. Students of all ages come to SoLAcc for this program, sometimes after their own children graduate from high school, and are guided by the college counselors to figure out the best way to obtain an appropriate degree while qualifying for grants, loans, and other institutional aid resources to help cover the cost of their education. SoLAcc was awarded the Hunger-Free Campus Award by the Louisiana Board of Regents in 2024. The typical age of a SoLAcc student has declined in recent years, from 27 years of age to 24 years of age today. This is a huge shift in demographics, due to the college's effective outreach program. Additionally, SoLAcc's tuition is on average about 40% less than a tradtional four-year colleges and institutions. Anne Falgout says, "The top issues that come up when we speak with prospective students is affordability and flexibility in classes as they choose which institution to attend. Affordability plus Quality equals Value!" Student Success Live is an in-person new-student orientation that all students take before registering. Guidance on resources and expectations help SoLAcc's retention rate of students. About 3/4 of the college's students are first generation college students and have no frame of reference about what to expect. Many know no one who has gone to college. SoLAcc works to help each student holistically and offers free tutoring at every campus. More than one-half of SoLAcc's students are university bound and find that first obtaining a two-year Associate's degree at the college is the most economical method to earn their credits. SoLAcc partners not only with UL-Lafayette, but also McNeese, Holy Cross, and Nicholls State to offer a 2 + 2 agreement that allows students to seamlessly transfer their credits from the community college to the universities. Lana pointed out that SoLAcc is the largest feeder of students to UL-Lafayette and its graduates start the university ready to excel. The Early College Academy, which is 'baked into SoLAcc's Devalcourt location in Lafayette," is rated in the top 1% of public high schools in Louisiana, and is particularly well-known for its students' math and reading proficiencies. The high school shares faculty with SoLAcc and the benefit of of this dual enrollment program is that students can earn their two-year Associate's Degree while earning their high school diploma. This enables the students to start at a university as a Junior. Many people attend SoLAcc after having graduated from a traditional four-year college and established in a career. As an example close to home, Lana's husband, educated to be a teacher and experienced as a fifteen-year veteran of teaching middle and high school stu...

Ask any business owner in a small town: What's the secret to success? And they'll tell you: relationships. When everyone knows you, where you go to church and whether your mom can make a roux, you're trading on a reputation bigger than your own.  Relationships drive business development and they can define success. That's true if you're selling barbecue sauce or underwriting commercial loans. Your word and your values mean something. So when a small town business endures, that's usually a mark of strong community roots. Or a mark of making a high quality roux. Besides barbecue sauce, jarred roux is the secret sauce behind the longevity of Kary's Roux and Pig Stand in Ville Platte. Ross Lafleur is the general manager.  Kary's is well known for its line of specialty sauces and seasonings. You can find them at just about any grocery store in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Florida.  It started life as a restaurant. Ross' grandfather bought the restaurant he worked in as a teenager. He and his business partner found success bottling and selling the barbecue sauce they served with their plate lunches. Ross's dad, Kary, joined the business in the 1970s, and the Lafleurs splintered off to focus on manufacturing. And that's the business Ross now oversees. It comes with a lot of cooking. 21st century marketing is one thing, but the best way to sell a sauce, is the good old fashioned taste test. It's also Ross's favorite part of the job.   Whether you're selling jarred roux or running a restaurant, there's a pretty good chance you'll need somewhere to put all that money or maybe get a loan. And if you're living in a small town, a community bank is a great option. Banking, like a lot of other industries, is hot on consolidation. But community banks like St. Landry Bank and Trust still offer value to main street markets, where customers put a premium on knowing the people they business with.  At St. Landry Bank, Shelly Fontenot is the person to know. She leads business development for the Bank, meaning she spends a lot of time on the road building relationships and giving customers a taste of what community banking is like.  St. Landry Bank has been around a long time. It was founded in the late 19th century and is still firmly rooted in St. Landry Parish, with several branches in Opelousas and shops in Port Barre, Eunice, Scott, Carencro and in Lafayette.  Shelly had an unconventional path to banking. She got a degree in Fire Science and worked in the health and medical resources field out of school. She joined St. Landry Bank after connecting with her boss through a local Kiwanis Club. Shelly is from Ville Platte and now lives in Pine Prairie. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. While the men and women who serve in the military make untold sacrifices to serve their country, when they come home they face a unique set of challenges – especially when it comes tt starting a business. According to the most recent statistics, in the United States today, fewer than six percent of all businesses are owned by military veterans. And of those roughly 338-thousand veteran-owned businesses, only 10% are owned by Black veterans.  A handful of them are in Baton Rouge.  Craig Stevens is President of Genesis 360, a Baton Rouge based company that acts like a one-stop shop providing services related to building maintenance, grounds maintenance and construction and even IT services. Craig started the company in 2011 as a parking lot-striping company so its scope of services was limited but quickly grew as Craig began offering more and more services to a clientele that now span the country and include commercial business and the federal government. Craig, a native of Opelousas, who now lives in Baton Rouge, is a retired Air Force officer, who served for 25 years in the U.S., Europe and Asia before retiring as captain of the 93rd bomb squadron. From there he went to serve as Director of Operations for Circle K before founding Genesis 360 in 2011.   Xavier Hoskins is Managing Partner of DXI Health Solutions, a Baton Rouge-based company that specializes in orthotics, joint replacement implants, spinal hardware bone growth hardware and disposable medical equipment. Xavier and his partner David Hyde founded the company in 2011, after Xavier spent a dozen years in the pharmaceutical industry. Xavier also is a veteran. He served in the U.S. Army  after graduating from Ole Miss. Xavier and Craig also know each other because they were both members of the first class in the Baton Rouge Area Chamber's Drive Minority Business Accelerator program, which was held during the fall of 2022 and spring of 2023.  Out to Lunch is recorded over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Americans are going to get a lot older over the next 30 years. That's not just an obvious statement about aging: the share of senior citizens in our country is projected to get much, much bigger. Researchers think seniors will account for 25% of Americans by 2060. It's a population shift often referred to as the Silver Tsunami. The impact of that change is on us now. And it's putting a lot of pressure on the healthcare industry. There's greater demand for care-giving services and treatment for chronic disease, and it's getting harder to fill it.  Caring for people is a stressful business, but a rewarding one. Susan Amos has worked in healthcare and senior care since the 1990s. Today, she's the Chief Marketing Officer for Senior Helpers, a senior care-giving franchise she bought in 2017 and then sold in 2023. But not before growing the company rapidly with her business partner. Her Senior Helpers unit doubled its business in its first year alone. Today it cares for 115 people with a long waiting list.  Susan also serves on the board of the Lafayette Council on Aging and on the advisory board of the Alzheimer's Association.  Lack of access to care is a big hurdle, particularly in rural communities. In St. Landry Parish, for instance, there isn't a higher rate of cancer diagnoses. But there is a higher rate of cancer deaths. That's in part because St. Landry is what researchers call an underserved market. The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer opened a location in Opelousas to close that gap.   Mary Bird is a well known name in cancer care. It provides a wide scope of services with locations across South Louisiana and in Mississippi. Jodi Conachen is Mary Bird's Chief Operating Officer.  Jodi comes from the marketing world. She's worked for Community Coffee, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Women's Hospital. She joined Mary Bird in 2019 as VP of marketing and became COO in 2023.  Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Lafayette Parish is celebrating its Bicentennial this year with ongoing celebrations commemorating the time the Louisiana State Legislature carved off the western half of St. Martin Parish in 1823 to form a new parish named after the Marquis de Lafayette.      Two years earlier, in 1821, Jean Mouton donated a parcel of land to the community then known as Vermilionville for a Courthouse and a Cathedral. Mouton became known as the founder of Vermilionville that in 1884 became the City of Lafayette in honor of the French marquis who fought in the American revolution. Our guest is Sami Parbhoo who is heading up the series of events throughout 2023 that will honor the history of our parish and look to what the future holds. Lafayette Parish enjoys a proud history of various cultures coming together, starting with the indigenous Atakapa-Ishak, Choctaw, Chitimacha, and Opelousas, who were the first to inhabit the area. Acadian refugees settled in the area after Le Grand Dérangement from Canada in 1755 when Great Britain captured the land from France. The Acadians married other native, French, Spanish, and African settlers, forming the rich culture and history of Lafayette Parish. It has been nearly two-hundred years since we were chartered by the Louisiana Legislature in 1823. Two years earlier, in 1821, Jean Mouton, a wealthy planter donated a parcel of land to the community known as Vermilionville, for a Courthouse, and a Cathedral. Together, they told the story of their grandfather, Dr. Carl A. Weiss Sr., who was accused of being the assassin of controversial Louisiana Senator, Huey Long in 1935. During that interview, Gretchen and her siblings presented a case for their grandfather's innocence and also shared how that horrific event changed their family tree by forcing their grandmother to leave Louisiana with her young son Carl A. Weiss Jr. to escape a hostile environment in their community. They also told, how years later, their dad, who had settled in New York, eventually began visiting his relatives in Louisiana…a tradition that continued as his own family grew. In today's episode, Gretchen will talk about her new book, “Under the Oak Tree: Stories of a Southern Family”, a collection of stories and memories from her annual spring visits to see her father's family in Opelousas, Louisiana. Gretchen, a native New Yorker who now lives in Colorado, will share memories of family reunions, outdoor play, crawfishing, horseback riding and more. She will tell of her special bond with her Great-Aunt Marie who was a wonderful storyteller, a lively and generous host and a living link to her Louisiana Cajun family's interesting and accomplished history. Gretchen will also discuss the family secrets that were not shared by Aunt Marie or other family members because of the painful and disruptive consequences of the family's involvement in a tragic incident that also affected American history.  Photo(s): Courtesy of Gretchen Weiss Dubit and YHYS Podcast Music: "With Loved Ones" Jay Man Your History Your Story Social Links: https://linktr.ee/yhyspodcast Your History Your Story - Join our mailing list! Jase discusses Louisiana history, zydeco music, southern culture, and the origin of the delicious Opelousas catfish. Phil has planted thousands of bald cypress trees and aided in wetland conservation in Louisiana, but he still has a message for some of nature's biggest fans. Jase explores the interesting traits and characteristics of catfish skins correlating to their location in the river, and the guys remember Si's ultimate basketball trick shot: "The Crane." Phil talks about his 30-foot-tall willows that were planted by wild blue heron, and Jase guesses that people up North are grumpy because they don't season the food up there.
