We have a new visit with a longtime friend of the WASP, Simone Brick. Listeners might recall Simone appearing with David and telling her powerful story of remarkably changing from a teenager with disordered eating, weight issues, and being institutionalized with severe depression, to becoming one of the most dynamic trail runners in Australia with one of the sunniest dispositions you'll ever encounter. Simone spent much of 2022 competing in the Salomon Golden Trail Series, a traveling road show of the world's top mountain runners with races spanning Europe and in the U.S. Simone shares what it's like living “on tour,” so to speak. After talking with Simone on numerous occasions via video calls, it was a treat to finally get to hang out with her this summer when she came to Colorado, where she spent a month training in Leadville to prepare for the race tour stop at the Pikes Peak Ascent. This type of racing series has increased the popularity of the sport as well as the prize purses, and inevitably the ugly spectre of doping has reared its head, something which directly impacted Simone. Simone also discusses her 2023 goals and racing schedule, which began last weekend with a victory in the Old Ghost Ultra 85K in New Zealand that she ran in 7:59:23.Simone BrickInstagram @theflyingbrick_stillwerise.com.auBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

I thought it would be fun hearing from Simone about her adventures this summer running the Salomon Golden Trail series in Europe, as well as the travails of spending two weeks quarantined upon her return with no human contact in a small hotel room in Melbourne - at her own $3000 expense!Simone appeared with David back in episode #93 in September, 2019 she has a quite remarkable story.  Once a depressed, traumatized, overweight teen, Simone set a deadline for herself to either change or commit suicide!  In the meantime, she spent long stretches institutionalized while battling mental health issues.  The woman she is today is nearly unrecognizable from that.  She has won both the Australian and New Zealand mountain running championships, and is a bundle of energy with endless optimism.  Definitely listen to that episode with David if you have not already, or listen to it again.  It's quite jaw-dropping.  Simone chatted again with David and me in episode #104 in April, 2020, and with me in episode #136 in May, 2021.  I always love chatting with Simone.  I hope her energy will fire up your own training and daily lives.

We are bringing back an old friend of the WASP all the way from Melbourne, Australia, Simone Brick.  Simone and I were on with David last year in his next-to-last episode, right after lockdowns had begun and we discussed the psyche Down Under and in the world as pandemic-related events began to unravel.  I listened again to that episode, and it was actually interesting to hear how we expected things to unfold versus what has actually occurred.  We were certainly wrong about some things, although we were not predicting Covid would just go away by Easter!  This time, Simone and I talked about how things are now in Australia where they had much stricter lockdowns than we had in the United States, plus, with their summer now ending, how their racing season proceeded, which is instructional for us in the Northern Hemisphere as racing now opens up for us.  She is now preparing to travel to race in mountain running events in Europe this summer.  For those of you who don't remember Simone when she appeared with David back in episode #93 in September, 2019 she has a quite remarkable story. I always love chatting with Simone.  I hope her energy will fire up your own training and daily lives.

Dane, was personally pretty darn satisfied to also go under Mark Tucker’s old mark by 87 seconds; running a 2:52:20! JD went through the marathon 19 seconds shy of his Pb and hung tough to run 2:54:29, slicing 5 minutes off his old 50km PB. Apples (the birthday boy) defied his preparation and hung on till 30km, then jogged in a 2:33 mara. He was an invaluable team player! The incredible amount of support this event received from the running community will forever be appreciated and remembered! Special mentions must go to the people below, as without them, the race just wouldn’t have happened! Sarah Davis (AV official) Richard Davis (AV official) Susan Schnaars (AV official) Stuart Schnaars (AV official) Josh savage (AV official) Peter Villani (Tomato Chip Timing) Simon Forer (lap counter) Scotty Orchard (GM) Karen Mickle (GM/AURA official) Des Waldron (Utility/jack of all trades) Jeff Wright (lap counting) Sean Verwey (lap counting) David Overend (Drinks station) David Wilson (Drinks station) Nathan Fenton (Runner chats/MC) Pete James (Runner chats/MC) Damien Clark (Fb live) Peter Dutton (lap counter) Simone Brick (lap counter) Clint Perrott (helper) Tim bowman (Took over 4000 photos today, including the brilliant ones above!) Chris Smith (Zero plus sports Beers) Barry Thomas (Zero plus sports Beers) Bec Black (lap counter) Jeanette Reyes (lap counter) Box Hill Athletics Club for allowing us to use their great track, on top of being so accomodating and easy to work with! Liam Adam for his meticulous pacing for 30kms. Jess Dunsmore for pacing till 21kms all in lane 2, rolling a 72 min half. He had poise beyond his 21 yrs of age. And of course every single other man and his/her dog for coming out and showing their support and excitement for this wicked sport! What a special day Sunday November the 29th 2020 was!

This is episode 48 of The Betar Project with special guest Simone Brick.Simone grew up in a loving family of 7 kids but that soon morphed into a battle against herself as she succumbed to depression, anxiety, eating disorders and psychosis. On may occasions she was written off as too far gone but with years spent in hospitals and treatment centres of various kinds, Simone has suffered through and witnessed many of the darkest sides of the human experience. Simone has come out the other side which is truly inspirational, it just shows true grit and determination which is now shown in her highly successful running  career and she is regarded as someone who is changing the game in trail/ultra running in Australia all whilst also spreading the messages that are too often drowned out by doubt and lack of awareness.I couldn't thank Simone enough for coming on and opening up. Catriona Bisset (AUS 800m record holder) and Simone Brick (2018-2019 Australian Mountain Running Champion) tell stories on their amazing careers, battles with mental health and the athletics industry as a whole. They also give an amazing observation on how eating disorders and addictions are eerily similar (6.00-60.00) After the interview Horace says something ridiculous about March Madness (1.03.34-1.04.10), the boys guess where Jimmy Rayner is (1.04.10-1.07.10) and finish with an amazing TOP3! Our favourite guilty pleasure songs! (70.50-81.10). Also Bundy wanted this to be a musical episode so we left a little goodie in the outro song.  Enjoy!!
