Today's conversation is with someone you may have come across via a term she coined. That term is ‘gray rhino' and that person is Michele Wucker. Michele is a strategic advisor and a best-selling author. The term ‘gray rhino' is one she came up with to take a fresh look at how we respond to the obvious, probable and most impactful risks we face. Her book, THE GRAY RHINO: How to Recognize and Act on the Obvious Dangers We Ignore became a bestseller. Michele has written a sequel entitled YOU ARE WHAT YOU RISK: The New Art and Science of Navigating an Uncertain World. This is a book whose theme is right at the heart of many of the things we love to talk about on this show. It's about how we as individuals can better navigate uncertainty by better understanding how our experiences and perceptions shape the way we view it. We get into that in the conversation, including terms such as ‘risk empathy' and ‘risk fingerprint', and so much more. At 12 we recorded a Live Tortoise Shack Sunday Special and it was one of my favourites. Caroline walked Vicky, Martin, Linda, me and Jules from the ConverSayTrans podcast through a jam packed schedule. The Irish Examiner's Aoife Moore and Vicky gave a brilliant insight into events over "the border" and the issues facing Policing. Simone George talked We Can Be Zero and the real cost of rolling lockdowns. Linda talked about the people from good families who can buy their way out of jail. We also talk the PAC and the LDA. We then had a brilliant contribution from Jean about her experience of living and enduring the pandemic. This is always the best podcast of the week. Four years ago this week, we called an Emergency Episode of this podcast to lament and analyse the ascent of racist, sexist Donald Trump to The White House. Four years later we assemble again in a slightly more hopeful mood against a backdrop of Biden possibly emerging victorious. We can't forget though that nearly 70 million voters choosing Trump again, despite or perhaps because of, his four year reign which has included white supremacist allegiances, children in cages, lies, sexism, narcissism, meltdowns and more lies. Joining our host Kathy Sheridan for this invigorating conversation which included an exploration of 'tenacious optimism' and 'fuck you feminism' was feminist giant Mona Eltahawy, human rights lawyer Simone George and Irish Times Washington Correspondent Suzanne Lynch. Cheerful is not an option, says Mona. Righteous anger and activism are what we need to dismantle the patriarchal structures that are still alive and well whether, when all the votes are finally counted, Biden/Harris or Trump/Pence take The White House.
It was an absolute pleasure to sit down and chat with human rights lawyer, activist, advocate and TED talk speaker, Simone George. We discuss #StandForTruth and how her work with the Redress Board shaped her and the work that she would go on to do. Simone shares her insights into structural inequality, patriarchy and working on domestic violence issues. There is also a theme of resilience, resilience practices and developing a vicarious resilience by helping others in difficult situations. Finally, Simone pays a beautiful tribute to her mother, Claudette, who passed away from a long illness only a few weeks ago during this most difficult of times. She was an incredible woman. “Spinal Injury strikes at the very heart of what it means to be human” – Mark Pollock A talk by explorer Mark Pollock and human rights lawyer Simone George as part of the Trinity Long Room Hub 'What does it Mean to be Human in the 21st Century?' lecture series. When faced with life's toughest circumstances, how should we respond: as an optimist, a realist or something else? In an unforgettable talk, explorer Mark Pollock and human rights lawyer Simone George explore the tension between acceptance and hope in times of grief -- and share the ground-breaking work they're undertaking to cure paralysis. Simone George and Mark Pollock delivered a joint TED talk in 2018 which was recorded at the TED Conference in Vancouver and received over 1.5 million views in its first 6 months online. For the finale of the What it Means to Be Human in the 21st Century, they joined us in Trinity College Dublin to speak about on the journey from injury to inspiration in an exploration of human endeavour. Simone and Mark's talk is followed by a short interview hosted by Ian Robertson, neuroscientist and clinical psychologist at Trinity College Dublin. The lecture series was organised by the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute in partnership with The Dock, Accenture's global research & incubation hub in Dublin.
It's a truly inspiring interview on my podcast this week as I speak to Mark Pollock about the inner strength needed to cope with life's toughest challenges. ‘He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how’ is Nietzsche's quote and Mark’s mantra for living. "If you know why you’re doing what you’re doing and it makes sense to you, then you can put up with all the tough stuff. It sits over everything to do with my life really," Mark explains. He expects problems while exploring the possibilities and it’s how he made it to the South Pole and has coped with blindness and being in a wheelchair. 20 years ago, in the space of two weeks, he went from being a person about to start a new job and life in the city in London to becoming completely blind and stuck back at home in his bedroom. "Suddenly I was a blind person and had to try and find a place and identity in the world again," he says. All of which led to running ultra marathons in some of the world's most inhospitable climates and now, after the accident leading him to being in a wheelchair, he's looking to tackle paralysis through the Mark Pollock Trust. It's an incredible story that can only but inspire and why not also take part in Mark's Run in the Dark in November? This week, Irishman Abroad Podcasts is proud to deliver to you the inaugural episode of our new podcast series Men Behaving Better. It's a new collection of conversations that nobody else is having. This is a podcast for men who want to change and for women who believe that change is possible. In front of a packed Soho Theatre in London, Jarlath was joined by comedian’s Pierre Novelli and Fern Brady, and the celebrated human rights lawyer Simone George for the first pathfinding episode of the series. This conversation explores how Fern’s former work as a stripper opened her eyes to the truth behind the power dynamics between men and women (7:00) and the importance of men simply listening (14:00). From the challenges facing modern men (25:00) to the shocking moment when Simone revealed how she was sexually assaulted inside the high court (28:00), to male fatigue surrounding feminism (45:00) and much more, this conversation is a truly gripping and entertaining way to open the doors to the new series and new kind of conversation about changing men for the better.
