The LA Superior Court is the largest single unified trial court in the United States, serving the approximately 10 million residents of Los Angeles County—the cases it handles spanning a wide range of legal matters, from civil cases to criminal cases, family law, and juvenile matters. As the state and county have grown, so has demand on the legal system. Access to justice—the inability for Americans to find and/or afford legal representation—has been called a crisis. What does that mean? What can be done about it?Stanford Law School's Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession and Legal Design Lab released a groundbreaking diagnostic report in April that outlines a blueprint for creating more innovative, modern, and accessible courts. The report marks a significant milestone in the unique partnership established in January 2024 between the Superior Court of Los Angeles County (the Court – SCLAC) and Stanford Law School. Created in collaboration with court leadership, frontline court staff, and community partners, the findings of the Stanford report demonstrate the Court's commitment to enhancing the self-represented litigant experience and its dedication to leading in justice innovation. Our guests joining Pam Karlan for this episode include Stanford Law Professor David Freeman Engstrom, the co-director of the Rhode Center whose work focuses on access to justice in the millions of low-dollar but highly consequential cases, including debt collection, eviction, foreclosure, and child support actions, that shape the lives of Americans each year; Margaret Hagan, the executive director of the Legal Design Lab at Stanford Law School whose researches, designs, and develops new ways to make the U.S. civil justice system work better for people; and Daniel Bernal, associate director of research at the Rhode Center whose work explores the intersection of civil procedure and access to justice, with a focus on designing and testing innovations to make state courts work better for people. Over the years, libraries have become more than just places to borrow books or bring your kids for storytime. They offer newcomer services and advice -- a place where new Canadians can find community and learn about their new home. They have youth hubs where teens can meet and stay occupied, and plenty of children's programs that foster learning through play. They provide free wifi, and offer refuge from cold in winter and heat in the summer. We take a look at Albion Library and find out why it's become an important second and third space for some. As Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael engage in talks to form the next Irish government, the controversial issue of facial recognition technology (FRT) in policing is back in the spotlight. With plans to introduce FRT into Garda operations already on the table, this topic is expected to become a flashpoint in political and public debates in the months ahead. Adding to the conversation, a public Think-In event titled Facing the Future: Let's Talk Facial Recognition Technology was held recently at The Digital Hub as part of Beta Festival. Co-organised by Dr Ciara Bracken-Roche and Dr Emma Clarke of the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, the event provided a platform for experts and citizens to critically assess the potential impact of FRT on Irish society. The session featured contributions from Daniel Kahn Gillmor, Senior Staff Technologist at the ACLU, and Olga Cronin, Senior Policy Officer at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL). Both highlighted major concerns, including the risk of bias in FRT systems, threats to personal privacy, and the broader implications for civil liberties. Participants were invited to discuss real-world scenarios, such as using FRT to identify a vandal after a car was damaged or tracking a hit-and-run driver. These discussions revealed a complex web of ethical and practical questions about how this technology might be used responsibly, or abused, in law enforcement. The Think-In also included Calculating Empires, an immersive research visualisation by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler. The artwork examines how technological systems and societal structures have evolved over centuries, offering a powerful lens through which to view the modern surveillance landscape. This debate takes place against the backdrop of significant political change. As the new government takes shape, its stance on FRT will likely signal Ireland's broader approach to balancing technological innovation with the protection of civil rights. The issue became especially pressing last year, when the government proposed using FRT for serious crimes, including riots and violent disorder, following public disturbances in Dublin. Supporters argue that FRT could improve Garda efficiency by speeding up video analysis in investigations, while opponents, including the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, warn of the potential for mass surveillance and errors that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Calls for robust safeguards and comprehensive legislative scrutiny have been growing louder. With public trust, privacy, and security at stake, the debate over facial recognition technology is certain to remain a high-profile issue as the next government sets its priorities. ADAPT researchers are at the forefront of addressing these challenges. Dr. Abeba Birhane and Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche have made expert testimonies for the Oireachtas' Joint Committee on Justice's Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) (Amendment) Bill 2023, and co-authored prominent opinion pieces warning about granting Gardaí extensive FRT capabilities risks creating "roaming surveillance units" and foreshadows "big problems" if such technology is adopted without rigorous safeguards. ADAPT's work on trustworthy AI focuses on ensuring that emerging technologies like FRT are developed and deployed ethically, transparently, and with public trust at their core. See more stories here.

hd-intelligence, a new Irish legal-tech company, has announced the launch of its innovative e-discovery system designed to allow small and medium-sized law practices to compete with larger rivals at a cost they can afford. The SaaS business, established in 2020 with a mission to 'revolutionise the legal industry', is initially targeting a potential Irish and UK market valued at €150m and is confident of further global demand for its innovative e-discovery platform. hd-intelligence is a user-friendly, cloud-based software solution that allows legal professionals to quickly upload, review, critically analyse and produce documents online. Such e-discovery processes are now required as part of disclosure procedures in legal cases, but while software solutions are already available, they tend to be prohibitively expensive for all but the largest firms. hd-intelligence's 'plug and play' platform is deliberately designed with simplicity and cost-effectiveness in mind to 'level the playing field' and allow smaller companies operate at the same level as their larger competitors. It operates using a 'pay-as-you go' system based on the amount of storage needed and users can upgrade to different storage packs when required at costs that are affordable. To allow for more efficient processing, hd-intelligence has recently incorporated artificial intelligence (AI) into the platform. By building its own unique AI function, hd-intelligence aims to become the go-to platform for large and complex litigation cases where an AI model will scan and identify key material on a case-by-case basis, enabling legal professionals to review the most important documents to their respective cases early on. The company is initially targeting legal firms of between four to 12 employees of which there are in excess of 100 in Ireland and over 450 in the UK. However, it believes its system could be used worldwide by companies in other sectors including financial services and insurance as well as by government departments and agencies. It is projecting sales of over €1 million by 2025 and of more than €2.7 million by 2027 with plans to hire ten full-time employees in the next two years and grow this number to 20 by 2027. The idea for a more accessible and less costly e-discovery platform was borne was out of necessity for co-founder Anthony Joyce, a partner in the Dublin 8- based law firm Anthony Joyce & Co. Faced with an incredibly daunting review of hundreds of thousands of documents in a commercial case and dissuaded from using any of the available e-discovery platforms by high licence fees, Joyce teamed up with barrister and co-founder Francis Daly to create a solution. The two ultimately partnered with Mark Murphy, founder and chief executive of Juvo, a web design and development company based in The Digital Hub technology campus in Dublin 8, to bring hd-intelligence's platform to market. Murphy has since been appointed chief technology officer of the business. A total of €560,000 has been invested in the platform from a number of sources, including from the founders, private investors and Enterprise Ireland funding. Recent investment over the last twelve months fuelled developments on greater security and localised GDPR policies, as well as developing the platforms artificial intelligence review function. Anthony Joyce, co-founder of hd-intelligence said: "We are delighted to launch our new e-discovery platform, which has been about four years in the making. Our product can be used effectively by any law firm, but we are primarily targeting legal practices employing between four and twelve solicitors both in this jurisdiction and in the UK. We believe there will be significant demand and we are extremely confident in the platform's ability to become a go-to solution in what is a significant and growing part of the legal sector." "We have identified over 100 law firms in Ireland and over 450 in the UK that could immediately benefit from our system. In time,...
Beta, Ireland's festival of art and technology, will return for its second edition with a focus on interrogating the relationship between power and technology, examining how digital tools influence society and how we can take agency back in their use. Co-founded and supported by The Digital Hub, Beta will return from 1st to 17th November and will feature a series of events including two exhibitions, several interactive workshops, performances, a thought-provoking conference, and an assembly focussed on artificial intelligence and art. Cannes Film Festival winner Noire, the Unknown Life of Claudette Colvin will make its Irish debut at this year's Beta Festival. Directed by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud, Noire tells the real-life story of 15-year-old Claudette Colvin, who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a segregated 1950s Alabama through an immersive and encapsulating digital performance showing the power of storytelling through technology. Noire is presented by The Digital Hub, the French Embassy in Ireland and Institut Francais, as part of the official Novembre Numérique programme, and is supported by Smart Dublin. This year, Beta will host two exhibitions: the first Unsettling the Algorithm: Seeds of Resistance, is an international exhibition curated by Aisling Murray and Nora O' Murchú. Featuring artists including Irish-Iraqi artist Basil Al-Rawi, Tega Brain and Sam Levigne, Firas Shehadeh, Winnie Soon and Tzu-Tung Lee, Nora Al Badri and Mediengruppe Bitnik among others, the exhibition will explore how digital infrastructures and algorithms shape, influence and govern our daily lives. Separately, the Local Artists Network will spotlight emerging Irish artists with new work from Conan McIvor, Aisling Phelan, Cailean Finn, and more. Among these installations will be the interactive artwork Boogaloo Bias, which explores the dangers of unregulated use of facial recognitiontechnology particularly among law enforcement. Created by Jennifer Gradecki and Derek Curry, the project examines the practice of 'brute forcing', where law enforcement substitutes images of celebrities resembling suspects when high-quality images are unavailable and explores themes of accountability and bias in automated systems. Keynote addresses by cognitive behavioural scientist and member of the UN's AI Advisory Board Abebe Birhane and Head of Arts Technologiesat London's Serpentine Gallery Kay Watson will be delivered at the conference, while several workshops, discussions and think-ins will be hosted by ADAPT research centre, the Creative Futures Academy, Fire Station Artists' Studios and Creative Spark during the festival. Key highlights for the festival will include: Noire, the Unknown Life of Claudette Colvin tells the real-life story of the 15-year-old who refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in a segregated 1950's Alabama in a near-mirror event to that of Rosa Parks, told through an immersive digital performance. Noire won the inaugural award for Best Immersive Experience at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and the production is brought to Ireland by the Beta Festival and The Digital Hub, in association with the French Embassy and Institut Francais, and is supported by Smart Dublin. Noire will make its Irish debut at the Samuel Beckett Theatre from 7th - 10th November. Assembly on Art and AI will bring together AI researchers, policy makers, cultural leaders and artists to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on arts and culture and identify challenges and opportunities to fuel a rolling agenda of areas to consider when creating policy centred on AI. Cold Call, a call centre created by Tega Brain and Sam Lavigne that reimagines carbon offsetting, by transforming the concept of time theft - a form of resistance where employees deliberately slow productivity - into a carbon-saving strategy aimed at high-emission companies. Beta, Ireland's art and technology festival, will return for its second year in the first two weeks of November. Co-founded and supported by The Digital Hub, Beta will host a series of events including creative exhibitions, keynote speakers, interactive workshops and an assembly centred on artificial intelligence in Dublin 8 and beyond. The 2024 edition of Beta will explore critical themes around the relationship between technology and power including facial recognition technologies, the impact of AI on artists, untold histories and elevating empathy through creative technologies. The festival's main exhibition, curated by Beta co-founder and director Aisling Murray and curator and Associate Professor at University of Limerick Nóra O'Murchú, features international and Irish artists, whose work will explore how technology can become a tool to resist hegemonic political orders and open new avenues for resistance. Irish-Iraqi artist Basil Al Rawi is among those who will partake in the exhibition with his artwork House of Memory, which immerses viewers in a digital environment that reveals different image landscapes constructed from archived pictures and stories from Iraqi diaspora who hold the memories of these landscapes. This work connects to ongoing research showcasing the value of XR experiences in developing empathy. Other artists confirmed for the exhibition include Firas Shehadeh, Jennifer Gradecki and Derek Curry, Sebastian Schmieg, Sam Levigne and Tega Brain, with more to be announced. Following on from its' successful first year - which saw an audience of nearly 2,000 people attend the festival in 2023, Beta Co-Founder and Director Aisling Murray, is looking forward to welcoming more visitors to the second year: "I'm excited to bring Beta back to Ireland for a second year where we can explore how the intersection of art and technology enables us to understand more about the world around us. This year, we're conscious of current technological advancements that impact Irish society including conversations about the impact of artificial intelligence on arts and culture, the influence of algorithms on politics and democracy and law enforcement's use of facial recognition technology. "We're hoping to stimulate conversation about technology policy, ethics and regulation and the important cross-section between art and technology. We want to help people understand how technology and art impacts action, and this year's programme gives a really fertile space to enrich these conversations." In addition to the main exhibition, a second exhibition - Local Artists Network - will spotlight newly commissioned work by Irish artists including Aisling Phelan and Cailean Finn, among others. Beta will aim to evoke important discussions on topical areas at the intersection of art and technology, with Kay Watson, Head of Arts Technologies at the Serpentine Gallery in London scheduled to deliver a thought-provoking keynote speech at this year's festival. CEO of The Digital Hub, Fiach Mac Conghail expands on the concepts at play in this year's festival, stating: "The Digital Hub continues to support Aisling Murray's vision of Beta as we mark the second festival. We operate at the intersection of technology, creativity and imagination. Beta is about exploring debate and insights into the critical issues facing us as a society as we witness major technological shifts and innovations. Art has a role in challenging us and we hope our audiences will continue to find inspiration throughout the festival." ADAPT Research Centre will return as the research partner for Beta with their collaborative interactive Ethics Studio, a dedicated exhibit space for visitors, researchers, and artists to meet and explore our relationship with AI using creative methods and interactions. “We're creating a new generation of digital entrepreneurs that we like to call digital warriors… And this new generation they're passionate about technology – they're going to be the ones driving innovation in our country.”Throughout its history, the island nation of Cape Verde has seen heavy emigration – especially at times of drought and shortages. It means that now there are many more Cape Verdeans living abroad than on the islands themselves. And while the government acknowledges the benefits that have come with that – with its diaspora sending back much-needed foreign currency – it now wants to encourage young people to find opportunities on the islands by developing the country as a ‘digital hub for West Africa'.On today's Africa Daily Alan @Kasujja speaks with Pedro Lopes, Cape Verde's minister for digital economy, as well as entrepreneurs Óscar Borges and Jael Alves Monteiro. With special thanks to producer Anne Marie Borges.
The demand for skilled professionals in User Experience (UX) is expected to grow over the next 12-24 months, according to a recent industry survey conducted by UX Design Institute, a leading global provider of online education and certification in UX, based in The Digital Hub technology campus in Dublin 8. The survey revealed an optimistic outlook among industry professionals, with 68% of UX hiring managers anticipating an increase in demand for UX skills in the coming 12-24 months. This positive sentiment reflects a strong belief in the value and importance of UX expertise in today's digital landscape. The survey, conducted by UX Design Institute based in Dublin, polled 537 UX professionals in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the US and other major markets. Contributors to the State of UX Hiring Report 2024 include experts from Meta, Etihad Airlines, Google, and Analog Devices among others. Employment opportunities positive for the UX sector In terms of career advancement, the survey highlighted encouraging trends in both salary growth and career satisfaction among UX professionals. A significant 70% of UX professionals reported receiving a salary increase within the past year, while 76% expressed satisfaction with their current salary. One of the most pressing topics for aspiring UX designers is industry demand, so it is a positive sign that among hiring managers surveyed, 66% plan to hire UX professionals in 2024. Specifically, 51% are targeting UX Designers, 50% are focusing on UX or user researchers, and 47% are seeking product designers. The survey also highlighted the promising employment opportunities for UX graduates, with 79% securing their first job in UX within six months of beginning their job search. This data indicates a robust demand for UX skills in the job market and validates the industry's growth trajectory. Diverse career paths: a rewarding field for career switchers For those looking to break into the UX industry, there are ample opportunities and routes into the industry as the survey revealed the diverse career paths of UX professionals, with 76% transitioning from non-UX careers. And this is attractive for employers too, 55% of hiring managers would consider an entry-level candidate without prior experience compared with only a very small proportion (2%) of hiring who said they wouldn't consider employees without experience. UX professionals are optimistic about their future career Despite recent challenges in the tech sector, including mass layoffs in the top tech companies, almost 9 in 10 (88%) of the UX professionals surveyed remain optimistic about their career prospects. Of these, 1 in 4 (25%) feel very positive, and only 6% say they feel negative. Commenting on the findings, Colman Walsh, Founder and CEO of UX Design Institute, said: "The findings from our State of UX Hiring Report 2024 highlight a promising future for the UX industry. Despite challenges, the demand for UX skills is growing, offering exciting opportunities for professionals and newcomers alike. The upward trajectory in salaries and career satisfaction underscores the growing recognition of UX professionals' contributions to business success. It is encouraging to see that employers and hiring managers plan to maintain recruitment and are open to hiring graduates and individuals transitioning into UX careers, further highlighting the increasing value placed on these skills." The UX Design Institute is hosting a global webinar on 23rd of May to discuss industry trends and insights from the State of UX Hiring Report 2024. The hour-long interactive session will feature a panel of UX career experts, leaders, and hiring managers offering guidance for aspiring professionals looking to enter the field. The online event is free and accessible to all interested in breaking into the UX industry. More details can be found on the UX Design Institute's LinkedIn page and website. The Digital Hub, in partnership with Aisling Murray and with the support of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), are putting in place plans for a new international arts and technology festival for Ireland. Beta, which will take place across 4 days in November, is seeking to critically engage with technology's impact on society through a combination of creativity, debate, and experimentation. Beta will focus on a number of key themes which are dominating the technology discussion at present, including artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, data rights and sustainability. The festival has identified a need to bring together Ireland's research and digital arts communities in order to foster a discussion about how the two disciplines can combine for the benefit of society. Beta is led by Aisling Murray, a curator and creative producer with 15 years of experience across exhibitions, festivals, literature, spoken word, theatre and dance. She most recently worked with the Goethe-Institut Irland in developing their Quantum Technology Art residency and curated the inaugural art and science stage at Electric Picnic, funded by SFI. Prior to this, she worked for Science Gallery Dublin, where she produced national and international creative programmes converging art, science, technology and society. Ultimately, the festival organisers are aiming to position Ireland as a leader in the intersection of art and technology programming in an audience-centred way to engage the public playfully and critically with new technologies. Beta will also include performances, discussions, workshops and a nighttime programme over the four days. Beta has already confirmed a number of acclaimed artists to participate in this year's festival, including Libby Heaney, Leon Butler and Peter Power. Two unique works have been commissioned to support the launch of Beta. Artist Leon Butler has imagined what the identity of a festival of art and technology could be and has generated a new font seen in the Beta logo. The final logo almost looks hand drawn or screen printed with beautifully imperfect edges - this intersection of cutting-edge technology and human creativity is exactly what Beta will explore with the festival. Beta's website, which launched today, features a new commission from artist and designer Farouk Alao. Specialising in 3D motion and web design, he has drawn inspiration from nature, his world, and human emotions. His vision explores the intersection of reality and imagination. The motion piece on Beta's website called the Beta cube, positions Beta as a centre point in which art, technology and creativity resolve and makes use of the unique font designed by Butler. Beta is also launching a new international residency in partnership with transmediale in Berlin, supported by the Arts Council of Ireland. Transmediale is one of the leading and longest-running festivals for art and digital culture in Europe. The Beta x transmediale residency will bring together four artists from Ireland and Germany to explore critical perspectives on artificial intelligence and digital art. Taking place as a hybrid residency with two weeks online, three weeks in Dublin, Ireland and 3 weeks in Berlin, Germany, the residency programme will provide space, resources and mentorship to four artists to develop new artworks that generate new imaginaries around climate resilience and political polarization. Aisling Murray, Director of Beta, said: "Beta has the potential to really put Ireland on the map in terms of the intersection of research, technology and digital arts. Each of these disciplines continues to grow from strength to strength, which is why it's very timely that Beta is now coming to fruition. The Digital Hub are the ideal co-founder for this with their experience both creatively and with industry, I'm so grateful for their support and excited to create an anchor point in the year for the communities interested in these themes. I'm hugely excited for what is...
Smart D8, one of five Smart Districts of the Smart Dublin programme designed to improve health and well-being in an urban population, has today announced the successful applicants from their third call for pilot projects. Smart D8 is led by The Digital Hub, St James's Hospital, Dublin City Council and Smart Dublin. A record number of 60 applications from private and public organisations were received following the pilot call in March. Four projects have now been selected which focus on menopause, physical rehabilitation, exercise and sleep apnea and will share a €50,000 fund to advance their existing work: Menopause and the City from Dr Louise Fitzgerald of Grafton Medical Practice/InforMD.ie: This pilot is seeking to create a better educational ecosystem around menopause health for both individuals as well as families and friends. A project with truly scalable potential, Dr Louise Fitzgerald is aiming for Dublin 8 to become the centre of the first city-wide approach to positive menopause education and support. Brace from Conor Motyer: Brace is a community-based recovery app which seeks to assist patients who are undergoing physical rehabilitation. With an added focus on the mental wellness aspect of rehabilitation, Brace uses exercise tracking, gamification and community support to improve both recovery engagement and mental health outcomes arising from research that has found that rehab program completion rates can be as low as 50%. MoveAhead from Dr Jamie McGann and Dr Johann Issartel: MoveAhead is based on years of clinical experience from both founders, as well as practical research carried out with the GAA, which has found that children's movement skills are deteriorating in line with increased use of screens and technology. MoveAhead is the world's first motion tracking and movement analytics platform built specifically for children, which informs games to assist with improving children's movement skills. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Identifier from Dr Brian Kent/St James's Hospital: OSA Identifier is seeking to reduce the wait time for a sleep apnea diagnosis, which is currently up to two years. OSA Identifier has developed an app to provide at-home data which can be reviewed by clinical specialists, and both inform and speed up diagnosis and treatment options for sleep apnea. Jack Lehane, Smart D8 Ecosystem Manager, said: “We were really impressed with the quality of applications for our most recent call for pilots. With the four successful projects, we are confident that they have the potential to address issues and conditions that are impacting large numbers of people. One thing which particularly stood out was the potential many of them have to scale. At the heart of Smart D8 is cross-sectoral collaboration that allows healthcare innovation to be fast-tracked, and these projects will greatly enable this.” The Smart D8 consortium is led by The Digital Hub, St James's Hospital, Dublin City Council and Smart Dublin, together with the Guinness Enterprise Centre, HSE Digital Transformation, Tyndall National Institute, St Patrick's Mental Health Services, Trinity College Dublin Research & Innovation, Trinity Translational Medicine Institute, National College of Art & Design, and Health Innovation Hub Ireland. The initial work of Smart D8 focused on significant community research to measure unmet population health and wellness needs. Following on from this research, a number of pilot projects were actioned to directly respond to this community feedback. A range of innovations have already been rolled out with positive impacts on population health and well-being - reaching over 5,000 citizens in and around the Dublin 8 district before scaling nationally. These initiatives include Heart of Our City which aimed at improving awareness around and management of cardiovascular disease in the community; Civic Dollars, which enabled people to earn digital currency through spending time in local parks; and Ways To Wellbeing, wh...

The Digital Hub and the Robert Emmet Community Development Project (RECDP) are bringing the latest buzz to Dublin 8 with a new Smart D8 pilot programme, Bee8. Together with the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), St Patrick's Mental Health Services and the Tyndall National Institute, Bee8 will focus on bringing the community together to develop a link between society, nature and well-being using bees and data to better understand the Dublin 8 ecosystem. Smart D8 is a collaborative initiative with the purpose of investigating how new and innovative approaches can be used to improve citizens' health and well-being in Dublin 8. Bee8 will build on existing work already being undertaken in the community, and through partner support, RECDP is set to become Ireland's largest urban apiary in 2022 with a total of 57 beehives spread throughout 12 locations in Dublin. Smart D8 is supporting Bee8 with ‘smart' beehives developed by the Tyndall National Institute, which will see Dublin 8 be home to one of the largest deployments of smart beehives in a community setting. 20 sensors across 4 beehives have been developed and installed to monitor key data from bees including temperature, hive weight, sound, humidity and bee activity levels. It is hoped that from its beginnings as a social enterprise in Dublin 8, Bee8 will grow into a process which can be applied to beehives internationally. The project already has an international dimension, with the development of sensors supported by the Celtic Advanced Life Science Innovation Network (CALIN). CALIN is a partnership between Irish and Welsh institutions to strengthen economic links and stimulate cross-border collaboration in life sciences. Bees are excellent sources of information about how a local environment is performing, and the data gathered will serve to inform the project team on air quality, climate and pollution in the Dublin 8 area. It is planned that over time the sensors will be further developed to capture air quality and CO2 levels in the local area, creating a feedback loop between local residents and the hive managers as to the impact the hives are having on Dublin 8's biodiversity. Bee8 will focus on citizen science projects with local residents to promote urban wellbeing and biodiversity. Community workshops on the importance of bees and bee by-products by trained experts will form part of an inclusive learning programme. A Community Engagement App is also planned as part of Bee8, which will enable locals to get directly involved through live streams of bees in their natural habitat during key stages of the beekeeping calendar. Community members will be trained on how to use and collect data from the smart beehives, which will assist in creating educational material to encourage young children to transform their neighbourhoods into healthy and bee-friendly areas. The Bee8 programme will also support the development of a sustainable social enterprise established by RECDP, which will bring sustainable jobs to the Dublin 8 and surrounding area. The programme will lead the way in providing insights for a sustainable model for community-led beekeeping and honey production, with new technology offering detailed knowledge on beehive states, ways to improve bee health and reduce bee loss. Fiach Mac Conghail, CEO of The Digital Hub, said: “It's encouraging to see an additional Smart D8 programme beginning, particularly one that will hold a great importance among the Dublin 8 and wider community. The Digital Hub are proud to be supporting Bee8, which will bring communities together to not only learn about the relationship between people, nature and well-being but also to develop research and knowledge through participation in the project. In doing this, communities are making a true impact and The Digital Hub looks forward to supporting and participating in Bee8.” Austin Campbell, Executive Director of the Robert Emmet Community Development Project, said: “Bee8 is an importan...
