In Episode 36 of the "Redefining Energy" series, host Michael Barnard engages Michele Wucker in a nuanced discussion about the complex nature of risk, focusing on the distinction between risk profiles and risk fingerprints. These fingerprints, shaped by an individual's inherent traits, experiences, and environmental influences, are crucial in understanding how people and organizations perceive and manage risks. The conversation emphasizes climate change as a significant "gray rhino" that requires strategic, rather than merely tactical, responses. Wucker examines the fossil fuel industry's risk perceptions, considering the potential for these companies to transition into the clean energy sector and exploring the implications of peak oil demand. The episode also addresses the evolving risk landscape in the wake of COVID-19, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility between individuals and corporations in reducing carbon footprints and adopting sustainable practices. Wucker underscores the need for collaborative efforts and the role of governments in shaping behaviors through policies and incentives. In the final segment, the discussion turns to the equitable distribution of risks and benefits in policy-making, particularly concerning independent workers. The episode advocates for improved systems to support these workers and stresses the importance of understanding personal risk decisions and their broader impact on society.

In Episode 35 of "Redefining Energy - Tech," host Michael Barnard engages with Michele Wucker, the author of *The Gray Rhino* and *You Are What You Risk*, in a thought-provoking discussion on risk perception and management. Wucker introduces the concept of the "gray rhino," which symbolizes obvious yet often overlooked risks, in contrast to the "black swan," which represents unforeseeable and improbable events. The conversation highlights climate change as a prime example of a gray rhino, underscoring the importance of recognizing and responding to such evident threats before they escalate.   Wucker shares her background in emerging market debt and sovereign credit risk, providing context for how she developed the gray rhino concept. The discussion explores the historical and societal dimensions of risk perception, with Wucker emphasizing the need for greater awareness and proactive action regarding significant, visible risks like climate change. The episode also examines how human perception of time influences our responses to long-term threats, drawing parallels with the global reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.Further into the conversation, Wucker introduces ideas from her book *You Are What You Risk*, including the concepts of "risk fingerprint" and "risk empathy." She discusses how cultural differences, particularly between Eastern and Western societies, shape varying approaches to risk assessment and decision-making. The episode concludes by exploring the interconnectedness of personal, organizational, and governmental decisions in managing obvious risks, highlighting the collective responsibility in addressing gray rhino threats. This episode offers listeners valuable insights into how we can better identify and respond to the risks that are most apparent yet frequently ignored.

"I went for wave energy just because I saw a field that has huge demand, that has huge potential for positive impact on the world, and that nobody's succeeding in. So, that kind of was for me, I don't know, maybe a feeling of destiny here. I got a second chance in life and maybe I can make something for the first time in the world, so maybe my second chance will be kind of, you know, worthwhile.”  Inna Braverman on Electric Ladies Podcast Harnessing wave power has been a challenge for smart engineers and innovators for years, and now a Ukrainian-born, Israeli woman has found a way that is surprisingly simple. It's early yet, but her technology seems promising and is and earning accolades. Because you won't give up your dream that easily. “We are a resource hub in that we engage with individuals, organizations, and communities who are on the front lines of climate injustice and ensure that they have, they know what informational, technical, financial, strategic resources are out there to strengthen their work…So that's everything from developing research reports to help folks to have the data that they need to make the case…We are helping communities who might be on the front lines of sea-level rise and they know that the waters are rising around them, but they might not know what systems they need to engage with in order to have the infrastructure that they need to, literally weather the storm.” Jacqui Patterson on Electric Ladies Podcast The communities that Jacqui Patterson and her organization and partners are helping are those that have been left out of the conversations about community resilience, because they are still in primitive condition, including lacking running water – in the United States. Investing In Companies For Social Impact - Meredith Shields, Citi Impact Fund “We have an allocated pool of capital that we are investing in early stage startups that are solving some of the world's most critical challenges. And…we care just as much about the financial success of the company as we do the impact that that company is going to make on the world. When I say impact… we think about that in two parts. One, who is running this company? Can we deploy more capital into diverse founders, meaning women, people of color, who have traditionally not received the investment capital that's warranted? And the other impact lens that we take is what we would define as ‘thematic impact,' which means, what social problems are we solving?...And again, we care about that just as much, if not more than the financial return.” Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast To solve the climate and equity crises, we need funders who are willing to back innovative – aka risky – ventures by people who come from different backgrounds with different perspectives. Some big companies are stepping up with venture funds and the like. One of them is Citi Impact Fund, which provides capital for early stage companies by a range of traditionally underserved founders whose companies are seeking to make a positive social impact. Listen to the head of that Fund, Meredith Shields, explain how they work and what they invest in – and much more – on Electric Ladies Podcast in this value-packed interview with host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear: How Citi Impact Fund defines “impact” – and how it fits in their focus. Tips for what to look for in investors for your entity – and why What impact she thinks the SEC's new climate risk disclosure rules mean. What makes up the best board of directors to maximize today's marketplace. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “My advice is to get really clear about what you're good at and what your functional skillset is, and what your managerial and or leadership skillset is. And then if you want to make a difference, think about where that's needed….As the world has changed and as this notion of impact has changed, there've become more opportunities to use my skillset in different ways, like many different ways that didn't exist previously. But I think you have to be open to that as a concept. And so just again, getting really clear on what are you good at and is that portable? And many, many things are in lots of different arenas.” Meredith Shields on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. She explains how to rehearse and prepare to reduce anxiety associated with risky events. She also explains positive risks and how to use choices and exit strategies to navigate risks better.   Michele Wucker's Interview on Business Leadership Risk Management Michele Wucker is a strategic advisor, author, and global economic policy analyst who coined the term "gray rhino" as a challenge to take a fresh look at prominent, impactful, probable events and to help decision-makers respond more effectively. Understanding oneself is crucial for making the best risk decisions.   Risk is not fixed and varies depending on an individual's personality and experiences. Understanding oneself and one's risk fingerprint is crucial for making the best decisions.   Having a diverse group of people with different risk preferences can be beneficial for making well-informed decisions. Self-awareness is the key to making better decisions.

Geothermal Energy 101 – Sarah Golden, Greenbiz VP of Energy “Geothermal very broadly put, is just the collection of energy from the heat that comes from the earth's core. And so it's, it's tapped into by just going to underground reservoirs and capturing some of that heat. There's a couple of broad categories I'd like to split geothermal into from the outset, and that's geothermal for electricity generation versus geothermal for direct heat applications. And so primarily with geothermal and electricity generation, it is done through drilling into the earth's crust and tapping into either dry steam… or flash steam…and using that to turn a turbine to generate electricity. The other form in direct applications is usually just tapping into the ground to do some sort of heat pump where it's primarily used for heating buildings or heating water.” Sarah Golden on Electric Ladies Podcast The new trifecta of federal legislation – the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Investment Act and the CHIPS and Science Act – include a range of funding for alternative energy sources, one of which is geothermal. But most people don't know what geothermal is, so today we'll find out. How geothermal energy gets to the grid to provide electricity. How Iceland became a country run on 85% renewable energy, in part by using geothermal energy. How the by-products from geothermal energy companies in Iceland are being used by other companies in a truly circular economy. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “What's top of mind for me right now is, around recognizing the finite nature of what you are able to do and the way the sort of obsession that our jobs have and the way our economy is set up for productivity and churning things out…….So what I'm working on right now, and I would encourage other people to do, is to respect our finite nature, not buy into the never ending cycle of hustle culture and be thoughtful about where you really want to spend your time and design your work and personal life to make space for that without trying to please everyone else.” Sarah Golden on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here too. Does everyone in your team look at risk in the same way? When we make decisions on whether to take a risk or not, we all have our biases. Our guest on The Melting Pot this week argues that diverse groups tend to make better decisions as they bring different perspectives. That's why it's really beneficial to look at the risk profile of everyone in the room to ensure that your team is looking at risks the right way and understands everyone's perception of risk.  This week we learned from strategic advisor and best-selling author, Michele Wucker. Michele is famous for having coined the term Gray Rhino – a metaphor that made headlines around the world as a framework for the ignored warnings for the COVID-19 pandemic and has appeared in media in more than 70 countries and 35 languages and counting. It has sent tremors through global stock markets when Chinese officials warned of gray rhino financial risks. Central banks and securities regulators around the world use gray rhino theory, as do business strategists, boards of directors, business continuity and emergency management professionals, insurers, ESG specialists, and policymakers focused on everything from national security to climate change. In this episode, Michele talks about her latest book, You Are What You Risk: The New Art and Science of Navigating an Uncertain World, about the perception of risk and how people feel about it. “Now we are leading a new revolution, which is a environmental and ecology and social revolution…. We launched ChangeNow in 2017 as a social enterprise to accelerate the environmental and social transition…. and the ChangeNow Summit has become in a few years, the world's largest event for the planet. We gather 1000 solutions from all over the world. We gather over 30,000 people in Paris, all committed to make change happen and to accelerate change…. Entrepreneurs, but also, investors, corporates, media talents, so that altogether we can connect and accelerate change.” Rose-May Lucotte on Electric Ladies Podcast As Women's History Month comes to a close, we are taking one more week to celebrate unknown women doing extraordinary work for the planet and people. ChangeNow, a relatively young company connecting changemakers working for positive environmental and social change, just awarded their Women in Sustainability Awards. Listen to Rose May Lucotte, Cofounder and Chief Operations Officer of ChangeNow, from Paris, France on their huge annual event and the 25 amazing women they honored in this fascinating discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear about: How ChangeNow grew to over 30,000 attendees at their annual Summit in only a few short years, including accounting for when events were shuttered due to covid. How they chose the 25 Women in Sustainability to honor this year Stories of a few of the remarkable women they honored What surprised her most about the women. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “I will say an advice I was given at the very beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, which is, never under underestimate a meeting. When I mean you're in your professional life and also personal life, there are some meetings that seem to be very relevant. You have a lot of expectations. And, you have meetings that are random or you don't really know why you've been connected to this person. You have time to go to this meeting, and actually those meetings sometimes are the most powerful ones. So many times I experienced that. So really, never under underestimated meeting.” Rose-May Lucotte on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes article on the women ChangeNow honored here and other related articles here too. “We have now forward looking data, data that allows us to look 30 years into the future and understand how and where we're vulnerable. The different hazards, by the way that we have, are flood, wind, drought, and wildfire. And what we're doing with that is, we're integrating it into the network design and planning processes, as well as the vulnerability modeling for assets that are in the ground today.” Jessica Filante Farrington on Electric Ladies Podcast We all experience how we lose power to our homes, businesses, cell phones, etc. in the devastating destruction caused by extreme storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and more, including due to the rising impact of climate change. I've always wondered what it would take to shore up that infrastructure that undergirds our everyday lives.  Well now a partnership between AT&T, Argonne National Labs and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency are figuring out how to better mitigate it – and its free for all of us. Listen to Jessica Filante Farrington, AT&T, Director of Global Sustainability describe the partnership and its new portal, and what it could do for us in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson.  You'll hear about: How the new ClimRR portal will help cities, companies, real estate developers, and really anyone predict the climate impact in their area for 30 years into the future and increase their resilience. How AT&T will use the portal to shore up its own network so its customers have more consistent cell phone service especially in weather crises. How the new Infrastructure Investment Act funding will make a difference. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Don't be hesitant to jump into the sustainability space because you don't feel you have the technical chops yet. That doesn't mean you don't have to get them, but like don't let it discourage you at the onset. And it can be an advantage because you're often communicating with people who are not climate savvy. And I guess the other piece in terms of how much risk to bring into your life,…During Covid, a lot of us parents became sort of the chief resilience officers of our own household. So, how do we manage all the risk and how do we adapt?... I just feel so passionate about inviting more women and having more women to work with in this space.” Jessica Filante Farrington on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes article on this new portal here and others related here too. Understanding the Concept of Gray Rhinos and Our Negligence to Respond to Highly Likely and Impactful Events

5 Minutes Podcast with Ricardo Vargas

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 23, 2023 4:37

In this week's episode, Ricardo discusses the Gray Rhino concept described in Michele Wucker's book. Ricardo comments that this idea is the opposite of the Black Swan concept. Events and risks, according to the Black Swan concept, have a very low probability of happening but can have catastrophic consequences if they do occur. The Gray Rhino concept refers to risks with a high chance of occurring and a massive impact if they happen, but we fail to recognize them as threats because we overlook their obviousness. It's not that we didn't see trouble coming; we just despise it. The analogy to the gray rhinoceros is that the rhinoceros is like a destructive steamroller, which runs at high speed through the savannah and leaves a path of destruction in its wake. Ricardo gives several examples of situations where the consequences were obvious, but we could not take concrete actions to mitigate them, such as the 2008 financial crisis, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and the problems with climate change. Using this idea in projects, we tend to focus on Black Swans during risk assessment and neglect Gray Rhinos. We often face threats in our projects that are so obvious and impactful that we do not give the necessary importance. Listen to this week's #5minpodcast to learn more.

The term ‘gray rhino' is one she came up with to take a fresh look at how we respond to the obvious, probable and most impactful risks we face. Her book, THE GRAY RHINO: How to Recognize and Act on the Obvious Dangers We Ignore became a bestseller. It's about how we as individuals can better navigate uncertainty by better understanding how our experiences and perceptions shape the way we view it. “Trust in the corporation today is higher than in your own government. That really gives them this moment and the trust factor that they should not squander because the majority of Americans do believe in climate change and do want something done about. And so, I think there are some real opportunities …. And this is for boards of directors…If it's a basic functioning of the company…the board of directions will be held liable for failure to mitigate climate change damage.” Trisa Thompson on Electric Ladies Podcast   A recent study by Edelman found that trust in companies is higher than trust in government, despite the flurry of people leaving their jobs for greener pastures.  Trisa Thompson, former longtime Chief Sustainability Officer of Dell Technologies, says this represents a window of opportunity that companies should seize to make a difference, grow, and recruit and retain the best talent, including women. Listen to Trisa Thompson explain why in this engaging interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: What's creating this window of opportunity for companies to mitigate climate change and grow. Why boards of directors are vulnerable and need to step up, as part of their fiduciary responsibilities. What she would do if she was still a Chief Sustainability Officer today – including who she would partner with. How to persuade executives and others who are not on board with sustainable practices. Plus, insightful career advice. And much more! “You have a job, whatever it is, you could be in marketing, you could be a supply chain engineer. Where do you see low hanging fruit, whether it's in your job description or not, that can make a difference in your company? And how do you go get that done?... , I would say let's all grab the moment with this Inflation Reduction Act and let's go see what change we can make happen by 2030!” Trisa Thompson on Electric Ladies podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. “What I think is really interesting is how do we get PPPs out there, public private partnerships, where we bring in also the investment community from the beginning, so that we can truly shift the capital where it needs to go in order to reduce our impact.” Sandrine Dixson on Electric Ladies Podcast The new Inflation Reduction Act invests $369 billion in driving a climate resilient, clean energy economy, as well as reduces prescription drug costs, among other important initiatives. Will these investments, coupled with those in the Infrastructure Bill earlier this year, usher in a more planet and people-friendly economy?  Listen to Sandrine Dixson, Co-President of the prestigious Club of Rome - an organization of heads of state, top global CEOs, etc. – explain to Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson the new economic model she says we need to tackle climate change and birth the net-zero economy in this enlightening conversation. It was conducted last fall at COP26 in Glasgow. Sandrine had just hosted the session with President Biden, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other world leaders at COP26 and previously had been Director of Prince Charles' environmental nonprofit. You'll hear: Why Sandrine thinks unusual partnerships are critical to get us to a net zero economy. The unique role women play at this moment. What the United Nations can and should do to seize this moment when truly all the world's nations need to come together to save our shared planet. Plus, insightful career advice …. “Women need to have more confidence in what they can deliver and to take those risks and to go for those jobs, even though they may not have 100% of the criteria that's necessary because what happens most of the time, women over-deliver, and…work with women, work with men, continue to develop our own capacities.” Sandrine Dixson on the Electric Ladies podcast Read Joan's related Forbes articles here too. “This is very much a jobs plan….It deals with four interwoven challenges…The first is the post-pandemic reality, the second is the economic downturn, the third is the climate crisis, and the fourth is inequality and racial equity… The general theme is that the road to economic recovery is through climate action..” Anne Kelly, Ceres.org on Electric Ladies Podcast The Senate just passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which has $369 billion for climate and energy initatives.  Clearly this will have huge economic consequences and affect the business community. So, what does the business community think of it? Listen to Anne Kelly, Vice President of Government Relations at the nonprofit Ceres, which works with the business community directly on these issues.  This episode aired last fall when the elements in this new legislation were called Build Back Better. Anne is also Director of Ceres' Business for Innovative Climate Policy.   You'll hear: What specifically the infrastructure bills fund upgrades to and what the Clean Electricity Standard is. What jobs would be created and the skills that would be required for them. What “sustainable infrastructure” is and how it will protect communities from the ravages of climate change – including maintaining power in a storm. Why businesses support these bills to maintain and grow, and create more jobs – and the SEC's ESG momentum. Plus, insightful career advice that may surprise you…. “Be careful about what you're good at. So, if you're not happy with what you're doing, you really do have to take a risk and be willing to step out of your current role and try something new, and test yourself. How will Members of Congress view the risks of climate change and their actions as they prepare to vote on new ground-breaking legislation to reduce carbon emissions, further the transition to clean energy, and help families with basic costs?  What's our own risk “fingerprint” and risk “ecosystem”? Listen to this interview with Michele Wucker on Electric Ladies, with host Joan Michelson about how people view risk and how it affects their choices. For example, will the Members think it's "risky" to vote for this bill? Or that it's "risky" not to?  Michele is the author of the best-selling book, "You Are What You Risk: The New Science & Art of Navigating An Uncertain World." “Your risk fingerprint is… a combination of genetic,… your innate personality… It also interacts with other things, your experiences….And lots of social influences...And they pretty much tell you what it is that you care about, what you value, what you're ready to risk losing or not.” Michele Wucker on Electric Ladies Podcast You'll hear: What exactly a risk fingerprint is and how to find yours, and those of the people in your life. How families, peer groups, organizations, and even countries each have risk profiles and how to use this tool to understand them better. How men and women see risk differently – and what impact that has in the workplace and families. How risk is a tool of negotiation and innovation, and the differences in it between executives in large companies versus entrepreneurs. Plus, insightful career advice for using the risk fingerprint tools in your career…. And much more! “Understand what your risk fingerprint is, and the most important things about who you are. That, in turn, leads to the path forward that you're going to chart through often very, very uncertain times, and will help you to make the choices that you need. “At ON Power...combined we produce just under 20% of the energy produced in Iceland…. We are removing carbon from our operations....Plus, we have been operating a carbon removal station, since then, mineralizing and removing from the atmosphere just over 10,000 tons (of emissions) a year.” Becca Olafsdottir on Electric Ladies Podcast In a recent whirlwind trip to Iceland, one of the fascinating companies Joan's visit to that beautiful Arctic country is ON Power, which operates the largest geothermal plant in the country, which produces 20% of the total energy Iceland produces. It's also removing the carbon emissions from its plants, and partnering with its sister company Carbfix to remove CO2 from the air.  This is ground-breaking technology that can get us to 100% renewable energy, like it is doing for Iceland. How? Listen to Berglind “Becca” Olafdottir, ON Power CEO in this engaging conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson during her recent trip there, conducted live in Reykjavik. You'll hear: How ON Power captures the CO2 it emits and mineralizes it. About their business parks that only take tenants that can share products and byproducts of other tenants, creating a circular economy in each park. How ON Power is partnering with its sister company Carbfix and with Climeworks to bring ground-breaking technology to market that captures CO2 from the air. not just their own emissions. Why women play an important role in driving the innovations in Iceland's renewable energy economy. Plus, great career advice.... “Women, we have a tendency of underestimating ourselves in general, and I think my advice would be that, if you're mid- career and you want to take a step up in the corporate ladder…I think it's important for women not to discount their experience and the knowledge. Try to be a bit bold. If you're applying for something that is advertised, don't not submit the application because you don't check all the boxes, because people are also hired on potential….and you might be the right person.” Berglind “Becca” Olafsdottir on Electric Ladies Podcast You'll also like: Halla Hrund Logadottir, Director-General, Iceland's National Energy Authority, on how the country has become 85% renewable energy. “I think now, business models will have to somehow rely more on collaboration rather than competition, So, I think, and maybe, naively hope, (this) will be the future of business models…We've harnessed geothermal power for ages, and then we decided we needed to… harness the effluent stream, the excess material that comes from, for example, the geothermal resource. And from that we are developing aquaculture, agriculture, the future of food, cosmetics and, spa life. So, enhancing the quality of life tremendously.” Birta Kristin Helgadottir on Electric Ladies Podcast On Joan's recent whirlwind tour of some of Iceland's unique technologies and business models that help its economy run on 85% renewable energy, one of the things that fascinated her was their unique collaborative business parks that share resources in clever ways, creating miniature circular economies on each property. This seems like another way Iceland could be a pilot project for the rest of us on how to run a country on 100% renewable energy. What are these unique business parks? Listen to Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson's fascinating conversation with Birta Kristin Helgadottir, the Director of Green By Iceland, their public-private partnership driving their initiative to be a 100% renewable economy, conducted live in Reykjavik. You'll hear: How these business parks in Iceland share products and byproducts among the tenants, creating a circular economy in each park. Examples of two of these unique parks and how they choose which businesses can be housed there. Lessons we can all learn from these creative business models. Why women play an important role in driving the innovations in Iceland's renewable energy economy. Plus, great career advice.... "Always follow your gut. You want to advance that's one thing. You want to make money, that can be a totally different thing… So you have passion… go with a gut feeling and go with your instincts, because sometimes you just go with what you think society would think is right….(And,) the traditional path towards a great career and a perfect life that there is an ideology about that, but you need to shape your own ideology. Iceland runs on 85% renewable energy. How did they get there? “My favorite part of Iceland's renewable energy story is that it started small. It started with innovation, entrepreneurship. “I think one of the most important starting points, whether it be on social or environmental, is back to the measurement, setting a goal and making progress every single day towards that goal with actions….Even if that goal seems unattainable, challenging, unsure of what the steps are between X and Y. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Michele Wucker discuss:What the gray rhino is and what it means. Why people are hesitant to take risks.Risk tolerances, risk adversity, and individual risk relationships.Evaluating risks and understanding the risk of not taking a risk. Key Takeaways:We should not assume that because something is ever present and talked about means that it is being handled properly or that you aren't vulnerable to that issue. The more you take risks, the more you develop your risk muscle, and the better you get at it.By trying to avoid certain risks, you are creating other ones. There are ways that we can increase our own risk taking, such as eating spicy foods, cranking the air conditioner, or turning on upbeat music. "People make an average, give or take, of 35,000 choices a day. Every one of those choices is a risk, and every risk is a choice. But do we think of them as constant risk taking throughout our day? "Net zero means that you may have some emissions, but you're going to offset them in another way...When you talk about net zero buildings, meaning...that it's generating as much energy as it's using. But when you talk about a utility commitment to be net zero by 2030, 2035, 2040, they may mean net zero in....the energy they produce to sell to customers. They may mean net zero across the organization." Janet Gail Besser on Electric Ladies Podcast   Companies and governments announce their “net zero” goals, saying they will get to net zero by 2030 or 2035, for example, but what does that really mean and how will they do it? If you have been at a utility for 15 years, look around at some of …the new technology providers, look at some of the startups, look at some of the opportunities in clean energy finance, if that matches your skillset. Look beyond where you are now at what's happening and be open to new opportunities. Risk is a funny thing – our minds are constantly looking for risk, scanning our environments and our available choices. And sometimes we do a great job at anticipating and avoiding risky situations. But that doesn't mean that we are universally good at dealing with risk. In fact, we can be downright appalling at considering and avoiding risk. In this episode, we explore the concept of risk, why we're so bad at understanding it, and the steps we can take to improve. Perry speaks with four risk experts who will help us understand the ups and downs of how we evaluate risk. We'll touch on everything from Black Swans to Grey Rhinos to risk frameworks, risk equations, inbuilt risk in the design of computing interfaces, and more. Featuring Michele Wucker (author of The Grey Rhino and You Are What You Risk), Christian Hunt (Founder of Human Risk), Dr. Arun Vishwanath (Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Avant Research Group), and Matt Stamper (Chief Information Security Officer and Executive Advisor at EVOTEK and co-author of the CISO Desk Reference Guides vol1 & vol2). “The really important thing I think about this rule (from the SEC),” Dr Gorte explained, “is that if companies are going to be on the record as having a certain level of emissions, especially as climate change gets worse, there's going to be increasing scrutiny and pressure on them to reduce those emissions." Dr. Julie Gorte on Electric Ladies Podcast The Securities and Exchange Commission, the SEC, recently announced long-awaited proposed rules for how publicly-traded companies will need to report the risk to their businesses from climate change in their audited financial statements. This is a really big deal. What does it mean?   “The SEC's statutory authority is to make sure that investors have the information they need to make informed, reasonable investment decisions,” Dr. Julie Gorte, Senior Vice President of Sustainable Investing at IMPAX Asset Management and a veteran ESG investment advisor, told me in an extensive interview about these new rules on Electric Ladies Podcast. ESG is environment, social and governance-focused investing, which is also a business strategy now. Listen to Julie Gorte explain what these proposed rules mean exactly and more in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear: What ESG-focused investing is and how it can have an impact to address climate change. Why the SEC is taking action now and why it's proposing new disclosure rules. What companies will have to disclose going forward in their financial statements How we will be able to rely on them…and much more Plus, great career advice.... “The best career advice I ever got was when I was leaving academia when I had just about gotten my PhD and I had these two job offers… One of my professors said, Julie, you don't have to decide what you're gonna do for the rest of your life. You need to decide what you're gonna do next. And that just, it sounds so obvious, but it just absolutely liberated me. And so I took the path less trodden, to quote Robert Frost, and my entire career has turned out really well, but not because of a plan. The only the thing that I've always followed is what I wanted to do.” Dr. Julie Gorte on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes article about the interview and the SEC climate rules here, and others on ESG & Ukraine here, on ESG actions here and on the new ESG economy here. Have you ever heard of the term, “Black Swans” or “Gray Rhinos”? Black Swan are events that we never saw coming, while Gray Rhinos are the things we see from a mile away. In this episode, author and strategist Michele Wucker explores the gray rhino and risk fingerprint metaphors and translates big picture trends in ways everyday folks can apply to their lives. Lastly, she addresses the question we've all asked ourselves at some point: why do some people choose to get to the airport early while others get there as late as possible?   Guest Bio: Michele Wucker is a strategist and the author of four books including the global bestseller, THE GRAY RHINO: How to Recognize and Act on the Obvious Dangers We Ignore. The metaphor and principles from her book have moved markets, shaped financial policies, and made headlines around the world. It helped to frame the ignored warnings ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic and have even inspired the lyrics of the hit pandemic pop single, “Blue & Grey” by the mega-band BTS. Michele's 2019 TED Talk has attracted over two million views.    Links: Hacker Valley Studio: Swag | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram | Email Ron & Chris | Website Support Hacker Valley Studio on Patreon Join our monthly mastermind group via Patreon This episode is sponsored by our friends at PlexTrac and Axonius Learn more about Michele's research here.
