Katie talks to Human Rights lawyer Craig Mokhiber and Palestinian-American journalist Said Arikat about Israel's relaunched genocide, Zionism's war on free speech and Human Rights, and the attacks on Yemen. Craig Mokhiber is an American former United Nations (UN) human rights official and a specialist in international human rights law, policy, and methodology. On October 28, 2023, Mokhiber stepped down as the director of the New York office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). In his final letter to High Commissioner Volker Türk, he harshly criticized the organization's response to the war in Gaza, calling Israel's military intervention a "textbook genocide" and accusing the UN of failing to act. Said Arikat is a Palestinian journalist and Washington bureau chief for Al-Quds, a daily Newspaper which has been published out of East Jerusalem (uninterruptedly) since 1951. In addition to his work as a journalist, Arikat is an adjunct professor at the American University. He served as the United Nations Chief Spokesman in Iraq from 2005-2010. He is a familiar face at U.S. State Department press briefings, where he has engaged in sometimes contentious exchanges with State Department Spokespersons. ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: https://x.com/kthalps Follow Katie on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kthalps/ #news #politics #youtube
Host Sarah Henry is joined by Partner Solicitor Nusrat Uddin, Head of the Public Law and Human Rights department at Wilsons Solicitors. In this episode, Nusrat shares insights into her work, with a focus on modern slavery, forced labour, and human trafficking. She discusses several groundbreaking cases she has worked on, as well as her involvement in Business and Human Rights cases, particularly those addressing forced labour within supply chains. Nusrat Uddin specialises in public law and human rights, with a particular focus on modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking. She brings cases against central and local government bodies for failing their duties, as well as claims against those who have exploited their workers. In 2023 she was awarded Public Law Lawyer of the Year in the Legal Aid Lawyer of the year awards. Nusrat also specialises in Business and Human Rights work. She has provided evidence for several US investigations into complaints against companies, from the fashion industry through to rubber gloves. US authorities have banned products from entering the US where indicators of forced labour in supply chains have been found. She believes the UK's approach is far weaker and is critical of the Modern Slavery Act's approach. Nusrat's team have pioneered the first case against the UK authorities in relation to forced labour in their own supply chains, which settled with the government conceding and agreeing to improve their due diligence. The case was covered widely in the media and Nusrat was interviewed by Channel 4 News which can be seen here. She is currently building a second case in relation to the government's due diligence of Uyghur made products in their supply chain. Nusrat was instructed in the key Supreme Court case of Wong v Basfar 2022 dealing with diplomatic immunity in trafficking civil claims. The Supreme Court established for the first time worldwide, a current diplomat is not protected from claims of human trafficking. The judgment was groundbreaking with global political implications. Nusrat was presented with the 2022 Anti-Slavery Day Award for Outstanding Contribution to Reducing Vulnerabilities, in Parliament, for her work on this case. Nusrat has a particular focus on improving state support for victims of trafficking and modern slavery. Last year she was instructed in the lead case, K and AM v SSHD [2018] EWHC 2951 (Admin), challenging the cuts by the Home Office to subsistence monies paid to support victims. The High Court found the cuts to be unlawful, resulting in victim support being reinstated to the full amount, and rebates being paid of around £1 million. She often advocates for safeguarding support and accommodation for victims who are facing homelessness and risks of further exploitation. Nusrat was profiled as Lawyer in the News in the Law Society Gazette for the successful case. Nusrat was also awarded a Research Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to compare the UK's models of support to those in the US and Europe, for victims of trafficking and modern slavery who are involved with criminal prosecutions against their traffickers. She presented her research findings at the end of last year and made recommendations to improve the UK's systems. The research has been shared widely, including by Anti-Slavery International and endorsed by Luis deBaca who was the US ambassador for trafficking. She also gave oral evidence in Parliament to the Home Affairs Select Committee for their Inquiry into Modern Slavery in 2019. She outlined key issues for victims in relation to support services, immigration and the criminal justice system; particularly highlighting problems of victims being wrongfully criminalised by the police and immigration systems, instead of being correctly identified and protected. Nusrat is also currently instructed in a significant challenge to police policies in relation to this issue. In recognition of her work in this field, Nusrat was shortlisted in the 2019 Anti-Slavery Day Awards, for Outstanding Contribution to the fight against Slavery, in the Enabling and Supporting Survivor Rights and Entitlements category. Nusrat was Highly Commended in the 2019 Law Society Excellence Awards for Human Rights Lawyer of the Year. Nusrat was also shortlisted as a finalist for Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year 2019, in the Children's Rights category, organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group. Nusrat has gained international experience having worked in the Human Rights and Legal Aid department of BRAC in Bangladesh, (formerly Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) one of the world's largest NGOs. She also volunteered at Al-Haq, a Human Rights NGO based in Palestine, building potential cases against corporations operating in the West Bank. Nusrat is currently a Trustee of Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights.
We go a little off the UK track, as we responded to the signs in front of us. Through our dear friend and Dance Al Fresco DJ Youssef Boutayeb, we were led to the work of CADFA, Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association led by Human Rights lawyer Nandita Dowson. Youssef is a super connector, who works deeply in his local borough, bridging many worlds across music, cultures and communities. CADFA works in the UK to promote awareness about the human rights situation in Palestine. Starting in 2003 when people from the London borough of Camden made links with people in Abu Dis a town in the Jerusalem suburb. Within their core work, they organise exchange programmes with the young people of Jerusalem. As a perfect connection to our ‘Why Dance?' series with Andrew Cuerden, we explore with dance teacher Tamara, and her friend and colleague Sara (and at times translator) what dance means to their culture, how it infiltrates life, and right now amongst the rubble and war, what dance brings them on the ground in such a difficult time. As Andrew talks into, this is not a political podcast. However as we're all experiencing politics influences everything in all of our lives. This podcast is a conversation between Andrew, Tamara and Sara and Human Rights Lawyer and CADFA CEO Nandita Dowson, who has enabled us a window of time in which we can meet and interview Tamara and Sara. As we all, Carmen, Youssef and Andrew, sat through the recording of this episode, we felt extremely moved and touched by Tamara and Sara and their way of expressing all things culture, life and hope. We don't want to reduce their words to ours, or indeed paraphrase their emotions to diminish what you might feel as you listen to their stories. For this reason, we just ask you to listen to this episode with curiosity about what life might be like for the women in Jerusalem and how dance changes our worlds. Following the recording, we joined CADFA for a beautifully open dinner where we felt welcomed with open arms. A symbolism of the culture in itself. We left moved and emotional, as we went about our usual evening, feeling blessed to have met them all and privileged to hear their stories. For more information on CADFA check them out here, and see how you might want to engage or support their work. For obvious reasons we haven't used their surnames or images of Tamara and Sara but if you'd like to connect, then please do email CADFA. Since 2022, the East Africa Community (EAC) has expanded to include two new partner states, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia, bringing its membership up to eight partner states. Each nation admitted to the bloc brings its own set of challenges but also expands the opportunities and avenues for cooperation in the region. The EAC has been strong in providing economic opportunities to its partner states and the inclusion of DRC and Somalia prospects to acquire greater markets for the trading states and allow the two nations to grow. On the other hand, the EAC grapples with political integration problems as mistrust and tension exist across the borders of member states, weaving a complex web of alliances and political clashes. Beverly Ochieng, CSIS Senior Associate (Non-Resident), and Pascal Kambale, Human Rights Lawyer, join Mvemba to untangle the issues and opportunities faced by the EAC. As the EAC faces a transition period with its new member states, how can it solidify its leadership and ensure that each partner is held to account?

Ruth was 'Passed the Golden Baton' to be in the show by Comedy Store Player Co-Founder Neil Mullarkey, who recorded a "Good Listening To Show" LIVE with me at the Bath Theatre Royal a few months ago.You can also Watch/Listen to Neil's LIVE episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5Ye4tXFI4kJust before doing this interview, Ruth Bratt had very recently completed a mammoth 50 hour Improv Marathon (which she does at least once a year - which we talk about) followed by a glass or three afterwards to celebrate! She is also, rather profoundly, a survivor of having had the extraordinary experience (last Summer) of an unexpected brain haemorrhage, whilst performing live on stage, with "Showstopper: The Musical", in Edinburgh. This obviously took her months from which to recover - and delighted to say that Ruth is here in the Clearing , very much restored & the 'right way up', made of Sterling stuff indeed! She is a real trooper. A proven performer, who admits to being addicted to improv. A successful co-writer of TV comedy. An amateur potter, an occasional painter, a reliable person who prefers to push herself rather than feel cosy in any normal comfort zone. You can now find Ruth Bratt most Sundays at the Comedy Store, where as a recently signed up member, she is happy to be live and vulnerable. Ruth is proud to be a collaborator, who is inspired by the twinkle in another actor's eyes. And to think, at Nottingham University she thought she fancied becoming a Human Rights Lawyer - until a drama tutor in a small college in North America almost randomly repositioned her career prospects!Ruth would like to remembered simply as being both ‘fun and kind.'On the basis of this interview, that is an odds-on certainty!Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. If you would like to be my Guest too then you can find out HOW via the different 'series strands' at 'The Good Listening To Show' website. GUEST OVERVIEW: Dan Kovalik is a Human Rights Lawyer, Professor and Author of several books.
FIDF CEO, Steve Weil is joined by Human Rights Lawyer and CEO of the International Legal Forum, Arsen Ostrovsky who explores the actual tenets of international law and the boundaries it imposes on armies. Given those parameters, he then offers numerous examples of how Israel is above-and-beyond upholding these rules, whereas Hamas is perversely violating them, committing war crimes and double war crimes. He also delves into emotional topics like the handling of hostages and the abdication of responsibility by the Red Cross, and the ICC's reversal of truth, already and baselessly targeting IDF soldiers as war criminals. Later, Major General Nadav Padan explains the war taking place in the Red Sea that has been waged against Israel and the United States by the Houthis, backed by Iran. Importantly, he communicated a shift in Iran, which is that it is now declaring that it IS indeed a player in this war, whereas before, it maneuvered as a silent puppeteer. He further updated about escalations in Judea and Samaria, Hezbollah's tactics in the North, and how the IDF is advancing in key cities in Gaza. Donate NOW at FIDF.org for the fastest and most direct way to give IDF Soldiers what they need most. 100% of your contribution will go to meet their emergency humanitarian needs. (Recorded 12/27/2023)

Human rights lawyer, Stephen Patterson joins us today to talk about his work representing ex-members of the New Zealand based Gloriavale religious group. Stephen provides insights into life in the group thanks to his many conversations with former members. It's some of the worst exploitation we've heard about on this podcast with children being forced to work long hours from the age of six, very little freedom within a highly patriarchal and oppressive system. Stephen also provides some more general advice on how to use the law to hold high-control groups and cults accountable for their bad behaviour. The leader of the UK's opposition Labour Party and former Human Rights Lawyer, Keir Starmer, declares Israel's 'right' to cut off power and water supplies to Palestinians in Gaza, yet it's a war crime to cut off water and electricity says the EU's von der Leyen - but only when it's done by Russia, not Israel.George is joined by rapper and activist Lowkey who talks the history of Zionism in the music industry and why Labour Leader Starmer is a prostitute to the Israel lobby. Julie Kornfeld has one of the most interesting backgrounds out of any of the digital nomads we have interviewed. Julie was a refugee lawyer representing people throughout the globe who were looking for a legal path to finding a place of safety. While working as a refugee lawyer, she put “become a digital nomad” on her bucket list. And Julie is not a person to dwell on things that she wants - she charges forward into life headfirst. Julie has now been a full-time digital nomad since 2021. Listen in for more on Julie's stories about: What it's like to live in Uganda Skydiving in Cape Town Dating as a digital nomad How to be successful in an unorthodox career while traveling Living as a “slow-mad” versus traveling quickly.
