A hundred-foot fall at 12,500 feet. A freezing night without shelter. Storms, thin air, and two helicopters fighting for lift. That's where Mark Wellman's story begins—and somehow not where it ends. We sat down with Mark at the Abilities Expo in Dallas to trace the path from a Sierra accident in 1982 to an ascent of El Capitan seven years later built on 7,000 pull-ups, custom gear, and a mindset that refuses to stall.Mark walks us through the mechanics of survival and the reality of rehab—seven months in hospital back then versus the compressed timelines many face today. He shares how PNF-based therapy rebuilt confidence, how depression tried to fill the gaps when therapy stopped, and why adaptive sports like wheelchair tennis and swimming became a lifeline. From there, we step into Yosemite: ranger days in the Valley, the culture of big walls, and the nuts-and-cams vocabulary of modern climbing. Mark breaks down aid systems, fall factors, dynamic ropes, and the dreaded zipper effect with the clarity of a coach who's been on the sharp end and lived to translate it.The ingenuity is as compelling as the grit. With his late partner Mike Corbett, Mark stitched “rock chaps” from canvas and leather to protect insensate skin during multi-day ascents. He explains chest-mounted ascenders and the way peregrine falcons sound like jets when the canyon turns into an echo chamber. We also get candid about the disability community: the balance between hope and acceptance, the legacy of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, and why community programs and expos matter for turning curiosity into action. If resilience had a blueprint, this conversation sketches it—practical, honest, and grounded in systems you can use. In this episode, Lisa and Annie discuss:Career planning when chronic health conditions or physical disabilities affect daily functioningSelf-advocacy and accommodations across education, training, and employmentAligning career choices with realistic capacity and long-term sustainabilityUsing real-world experiences and conversations to validate career fitKey Takeaways: College provides a structured environment where students can learn to articulate how their condition affects them, practice requesting accommodations, and build confidence navigating formal systems they will later encounter in the workplace.Accommodations support access but do not eliminate essential job functions, making it critical to assess whether the physical, cognitive, and stamina demands of a role can be met consistently over time.Hands-on validation through internships, clinicals, job shadows, and informational interviews reveals the lived reality of a job in ways that academic requirements alone cannot.Sustainable career planning requires honest conversations about energy limits, recovery time, and quality of life, rather than defaulting to paths that are technically possible but personally draining. “You have to be comfortable talking about your condition and your needs.” – Annie TulkinAbout Annie Tulkin: Annie Tulkin is the CEO and Founder of Accessible College, as well as an educator, author, and public speaker. I had the wonderful opportunity of speaking with Maggie Goldberg, President and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, for this week's episode of The QuadCast. Following a C2 injury at 16 years old, one that she fully recovered from thank goodness, Maggie seemed destined to work on behalf of the paralysis community. She started at the Reeve Foundation in 2000, and has held numerous positions over the years: Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Vice President of Policy and Programs, Chief Operating Officer, and in September, 2021, was chosen from a field of more than 200 candidates, as the President and Chief Executive Officer. Maggie, and her team, carry on Christopher's mission of curing spinal cord injury by advancing innovative research and improving the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by paralysis. Today's Care. Today's Cure! I so appreciated Maggie's time, and the tireless work she and the Foundation continue to do on behalf of the SCI community. I hope you will enjoy getting to know her in this episode, and that you'll learn something new from it as well. As always, thank you for listening!

Stacey Frigerio Mahdavian graduated from UMass Amherst in 1989. She planned to work as a camp counselor that summer and then travel a bit. Unfortunately, life had another idea. On a gravel road in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, the car in which she was riding, fishtailed and then flipped four times. In between the third and fourth flip, she was thrown 100 feet from the car and sustained a spinal cord injury at L1 and L2. At the time she was told she would never walk again, nor be able to have children. In this week's episode of the QuadCast, Stacey tells us about her remarkable journey, which has had many twists and turns. Over the years, she has worked as an assistant district attorney in the Brooklyn district attorney's office, worked at a private law firm, become an advocate for the SCI community with United Spinal Association and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, and more. Most importantly/impressively, she will participate in November's New York City Marathon in a handcycle with a guide runner… who just so happens to be her 25-year-old daughter, Anastasia (the oldest of her 3 children)! Stacey is the personification of resilience, and you will hear that loud and clear in our conversation!

Ilya Salkind is one of the movie's executive producers that started the superhero genre. Superman: The Movie in 1978 taught audiences that you can believe a man can fly. Salkind's father Alexander acquired the rights to make the movie, and its sequels, Superman II and Superman III. He also exec-produced 1984's Supergirl starring Helen Slater. In this episode, Salkind gives an in-depth conversation about making those movies. He discussed casting Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, and the legendary Marlon Brando. He also revealed that there was a draft of a never-made Superman V. Entitled Superman Reborn, this script was performed recently as a stage reading, the audio of which will be featured in next week's podcast episode. Salkind explains how the idea of doing the reading came to be, and how he uncovered the draft of Superman Reborn. Proceeds from the reading went to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
