And how to get there, even if it seems like it takes a lifetime. I talk about the long, hard road to building the confidence to feel worthy of being there, and to keep confident while there, about the essential-ness of connecting with other people, and of the beauty in finding and having a sense of purpose – all essentials, and all things that it can feel like midlife and peri/menopause threatens. But if you let them, they can be just the opposite. I talk about the feeling of ALMOST entering menopause, meeting heroes, becoming your own hero, and what it feels like to start to see yourself, accept yourself, and BECOME yourself, after all this time. Also discussed in this episode:Not wearing heels when everyone else is + the beauty of proper hair and makeupHow I got involved with Perry, the sisterhood for perimenopausePerry panel members: State of Menopause's Stacy London, Menopocalypse author and Nyah Health cofounder Amanda Thebe, Behavioural Sleep Doc Dr. Shelby Harris,  The Menopause mogul Dr. Joy'El Ballard, Endocrinologist Dr. Disha Narang, journalist and midlife influencer Tamsen Fadel, ob-gyn and menopause expert Dr Sharon Malone and most inspirational-in-midlife maven Rachel HughesYvonne, Hotflash inc perimenoposse member extraordinaireCoffee in Bryant Park with pro-aging advocate Skylar Liberty Rose (apologies, I say ROSS)Menopause Multiverse Cocktail Hour in Harlem: Hosted by Omisade Burney-Scott (Black Girl's Guide to Menopause) and featuring many amazing women including Karen Arthur (Menopause Whilst Black); Jessica Jolie (Age Lust) and and the fearless, wonderfully profane and inspiring Mona Eltahawy, who has such astonishing courage that I switched my own nickname for summoning courage from LADY BALLS MONASThe hero's journey of menopause and midlife Showing up for yourselfThank you so much to Perry and Omi and sparks & honey and everyone else who helped me be a part of this.Join the Hotflash Inc perimenoposse: Web: hotflashinc.comTikTok: @hotflashincInstagram: @hotflashincX: @hotflashinc Episode website: Hotflashinc See hotflashinc.com/privacy-policy for privacy information

This podcast contains some coarse language. --- 2022 was a bad year for gender equality.  It was the year Roe v Wade was overturned and anti-trans legislation and hate surged in the United States of America, the year women were jailed and killed in Iran for their clothing, and the year that female students in Afghanistan were banned from attending university by the Taliban.    At a time when women's rights are under attack in so many places, it's more important than ever to think globally and stand in solidarity with women around the world. Feminism isn't just about the rights of women in the Western world – it's a global movement that fights for the rights and equality of women everywhere. And on International Women's Day, we have the chance to come together and stand in solidarity with women all over the globe.    In this special event with Mona Eltahawy, hear from one of the world's most prominent feminists and a fierce advocate for women's rights. Eltahawy's writing has sparked vital conversations about the ways in which young women are leading the charge for change, and the challenges and issues that women face around the world. She takes a no-holds-barred approach to tackling some of the most pressing issues facing women today, including sexual violence, reproductive rights, and the patriarchy.  This event was chaired by the Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Anti-racism, Education, International Aid, and Animal Welfare, Senator Mehreen Faruqi. Mehreen has been an unflinching voice on social, environmental and racial justice, pushing to dismantle the systems of power, privilege and patriarchy that allow these injustices to continue.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

International Women's Week on Intelligence Squared. There are seven necessary sins for women and girls, that's according to Egyptian writer and activist Mona Eltahawy. Anger, ambition, profanity, violence, attention, lust, and power, are all attributes that the patriarchy sees as vices for women, she says, but these should be harnessed as virtues. On this episode of the podcast, which was recorded in 2021, Mona was joined in conversation by physicist and broadcaster Helen Czerski to discuss how women and girls can tap into their inner fury, and rather than surviving the patriarchy, they can dismantle it. — We'd love to hear your feedback and what you think we should talk about next, who we should have on and what our future debates should be about. Join me as I talk to Mona Eltahawy, journalist, activist and author. (Note that there is liberal use of the F word throughout - as Mona herself proclaims, profanity is one of the ways she claims her power!)  We discuss her last book "The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls" - including why it is so critical we stop teaching girls to express anger. Here's one of my favourite quotes from the book: “What if we nurtured and encouraged the expression of anger in girls the same way we encourage reading skills: as necessary for their navigation of the world? What if we believed that, just as reading and writing help a girl to understand the world around her and to express herself within it, expressing her anger was also a necessary tool for a girl making her way through life.” We then move on to talk about the anthology she is currently working on entitled "Bloody Hell! And Other Stories: Adventures in Menopause from Across the Personal and Political Spectrum" a much needed lens on a subject where many of the voices we hear are White, Western, and straight. We cover Mona's own disbelief at how unprepared she was for perimenopause, why global, and gender-expansive voices and stories are so important, and why the patriarchy really (really) hates it when older women discover their power and become shameless...and how it tries to silence and shame us all the more. Oh...and why we all talk about moisturising our faces...but heaven forbid we should talk about moisturising our v@ginas! The phrase force-of-nature was created to describe this week's guest. Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy has been fighting back and refusing to shut up for the best part of 50 years. She has been assaulted and detained in Tahir Square, banned from an Australian TV network, and has made it her business to be the scourge of the pale male, and stale everywhere. She is also a huge source of inspiration for women and girls the world over through her Feminist Giant newsletter. In her new book - The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls, a fierce, fearless and utterly uninhibited manifesto and call to arms - she tackles head on all the things women are taught from an early age and encourages us to stick two fingers up to the lot of them. Mona doesn't want equality - she wants to set us free. She wants us to be the star of our own lives. She wants us to sin!Mona is unashamedly political as she talks anger, perimenopause, ambition, ageing disgracefully, going grey and why she believes it's up to us to decide how we want to emerge on the other side of menopause. You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and The Seven Necessary Sins For Women And Girls by Mona Eltahawy. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. 'We need to dismantle the patriarchy' is a familiar feminist rallying cry. But Egyptian-American writer and activist Mona Eltahawy believes we should stop just saying it, and start actively defying and disrupting the patriarchy now - with force if necessary. Mona's latest book is The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls. She joins Emma to explain why she wrote it with enough 'rage to fuel a rocket.' In a recent article, writer and travel editor at the Independent, Cathy Adams said she wished the phrase 'I sometimes resent my baby' went down better at the pub. She describes imagining an alternate life without her son at the centre, and how thirteen months after her son's birth she's still struggling to articulate her feelings because of the lack of language surrounding maternal ambivalence. Cathy joins Emma - along with Amy Brown, a Professor of Child Public Health - to discuss these conflicting emotions and why we find it so hard to openly talk about the challenges of being a parent. In Thursday’s Elections in Wales Natasha Asghar made history by becoming the first woman from a Black or Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) background to be elected to the Welsh Senedd. She’ll represent South Wales East for the Tories – a seat held by her dad until his death last year. However the overall number of women elected was down on the last Election. Emma talks to Natasha about what the victory means to her and how she feels about following in her father’s footsteps. Plus Jess Blair from the Electoral Reform Society Wales tells us why more needs to be done to make sure that we see more women coming through.

Eltahawy advocates a muscular, out-loud approach to teaching women and girls to harness their power.Eltahawy came to Intelligence Squared to tell the stories of activists and ordinary women around the world from countries including South Africa, China, Nigeria, India, Bosnia and Egypt who are fighting back against these taboos and tapping into their inner fury. When women try to introduce nuance into certain public debates, it doesn't usually go well for them. Western media conglomerates are often more interested in protecting power than interrogating it. If a woman offers an unvarnished analysis of power structures, or a contrary view, it's often framed as ugly, inappropriate or ungrateful. Mona Eltahawy is an award-winning Egyptian American feminist. She has written for establishments like The New York Times and the Washington Post. She spends her time between Cairo and New York. Mona is a strong proponent of “FUCK THE PATRIARCHY”. In this episode, Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane sat down with Mona to discuss her much acclaimed book. Mona shares stories about how the book came about. It initially started as an essay titled “Why They Hate Us”, then the essay blossomed into a necessary book. The book tells the story of Muslim womxn and how they are subjugated under the gaze of faith and culture. Mona describes the thesis of the book as the trifecta of misogyny, which is the State, Street and home together oppressing girls and womxn. The conversation also touches on our how institutions like religion are used as conduits of patriarchy. Letlhogonolo and Mona spoke on a range of interesting topics, such as identity, (Black) feminism, consent, queerness and some of her favorite writers. At the time of recording Black Panther was a huge point of discussion, so they spoke about North Africa and the anti-blackness that exists in that part of the region. Mona believes in the autonomy of womxn and upholds the proclamation: “I own my body”. This conversation is both illuminating as it is incendiary. At the end of the podcast, she also reveals that she is working on a new book.
