The business was a partnership with a friend who owned a real estate agency and saw the need for ads and marketing for agents. As a marketer and website developer, Jaime was a great fit. Jaime's partner Mariano had moved to the U.S. from the Philippines. "He had the relationships and knew the work culture," Jaime says. The business was built with remote workers long before international virtual assistants were popular. For a couple years, the partners found great success together helping real estate agents with their branding, marketing and advertising.  Then when the 2008 recession hit and real estate took a turn, Jaime found himself shuttering the business. "We lost 70 clients in the span of three months." At 38 years old, Jaime had to move back in with his parents. While owning that first business, he says he spent instead of saved, lived paycheck to paycheck and just enjoyed himself.  Fast forward nearly ten years and Jaime now has his own virtual, remote-work based business with clients around the world. The Podcast Pivot Stop Riding the Pine (SRTP) Podcast is Jaime's podcast designed for business leaders who want to overcome workplace barriers, transcend changes, and perform at their best. The name of the podcast is based on a sports analogy for 'get off the bench.' As an amateur hockey player who has created several successful businesses with his DIY attitude and a drive to accomplish an education-based dialog, the term fit. In the beginning, Stop Riding the Pine (SRTP), was created to interview leaders in the industry to share their marketing tips and strategies. When Jaime started Bottleneck, his world was less about marketing and changed to focus more on culture. So after about four years, he decided to pivot and start a new show, Culture Eats Strategy. His technology helps foster a more humanized experience between brands and people. Main Questions Asked: What is a chatbot? What are some applications for a chatbot? What types of businesses are chatbots suitable for? What kind of feedback are you getting from people who are using chatbots? Key Lessons Learned: Chatbots Chatbots are essentially software programs that simulate human conversation. Relationship Experience Technology is the future of communication where we create emotional interactive experiences within the technology itself. All new technologies face an initial backlash but eventually reach equilibrium. Chatbots are superior to every other form of marketing because it’s instant and consumer driven. Every interaction with a chatbot can be used to tag the conversation and keep track of the unique individuals. Peter believes that chatbots will be the end of email. The average US American gets 121 emails a day, chatbots are how you get above the noise. Your existing marketing efforts can put people into your chatbot which allows you to develop the lead with an autoresponder sequence. Be careful not to overwhelm a person by spamming them with messages. The open rates and click through rates of chatbots is currently extremely high. Facebook Messenger isn’t the only platform where chatbots can be found, they can be found on websites and other chat apps too. Chatbots are good options for both large, established businesses as well as the solopreneur. The character embodies the brand. If you’re just using chatbots for text communication, you’re missing out on an opportunity. Injecting humour into your message is a great way to make the interactive experience more memorable. Use Cases Chatbots can be used as a funnel facilitator that keeps leads moving through the various stages of the funnel. The interactive character of the chatbot can also be used as an accountability partner to keep the user on track. Messenger codes can allow the consumer to scan the code and have an interactive educational experience around their product. Final Tips If you want to rise above the noise, you have to do something different. Interactive experiences are the future of marketing communication. Jaime Jay founded Slapshot Studio, LLC in 2013. He wanted a business that combined his life-long passion for the sport of ice hockey with his ability to build websites and thus the Slapshot Studio brand was born. With his signature customer service and DIY “get-it-done” style, Slapshot Studio quickly became the go to web development company for many entrepreneurs and small businesses. At the core, the Slapshot Studio team develops WordPress website solutions that convert by integrating technology platforms such as Chatbots, funnels, social media, and more. Jaime is an amateur hockey player and starter geek who truly enjoys helping his clients build a solid foundation online that not only keeps his clients happy, but turns them into raving fans. Since leaving the U.S. Army as a former paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in 1994, he began working in corporate America. He worked for a couple different fortune 500 companies over the next 12 years. He learned a lot about business and working with others, but he never quite felt like he found his calling. It wasn’t until the summer of 2006, when he co-founded a small real estate ad agency that he realized his passion for the entrepreneurial spirit. A whole new world opened up to him, but it wasn’t without heartache and trouble as the real estate bubble burst in 2008 and he lost all his customers in a span of just over three months. After some considerable thought and self-grief, he picked himself back up and dusted himself off. He was always attracted to technology and most of his friends and family knew this. Jaime is an avid hockey fan. He loves the competitive spirit and the team aspect of the game. He enjoys the sport so much that he decided to integrate his passion for the sport into his passion for marketing. Jaime has been working in the sales and marketing arena since he left the US Army as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division in 1994. Working for three different fortune 100 companies, Jaime learned quickly how to build relationships. The challenging aspect of working for a large company was having the ability to be creative. This is the main reason he went out on his own and started his own business. As time progressed, Jaime found that he really enjoyed making websites for people and so he started Slapshot Studio in 2013 and never looked back. Jaime enjoys traveling, boating, playing guitar, hanging out with family, and playing hockey. When Jaime Jay left his service in the 82nd Airborne division of the U.S. Army he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He waited tables for a while then got into some corporate jobs where he learned a ton of things. One of those things was that he had enough ambition and dreams of his own that he really needed to start his own business. But it was scary. All of the uncertainties that come from not having a consistent paycheck and all of the responsibilities being on your shoulders were very present and very real for him. How do you deal with that kind of pressure successfully so you can move on and make your business a success? Jaime Jay shares his story on this episode of Chasing Dreams. He discovered that being stubborn and selfish are great things. Two things that Jaime Jay says were instrumental in his success are that he was stubborn and that he was selfish. What he means is this: You can’t stick with it during the hard times to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals if you aren’t stubborn. And you can’t expect to be a blessing or benefit to anyone else if you can’t first provide for yourself, so you’ve got to be determined (stubborn) and you’ve got to be clear on accomplishing what you want and need to accomplish (selfish). If you’ll take the time to hear how Jaime describes his perspective on those two things it will make a lot more sense to you and hopefully inspire you to put those two things to work for yourself. When Jaime Jay’s business team started to grow he discovered within a short amount of time that as the leader of the company, everybody came to him for answers. That was OK, he didn’t resent it or feel overwhelmed. But what he realized was that he didn’t have anyone that he could ask the questions he had. That’s when he first took the steps to get involved in a Mastermind group so that he could get help, insight, and benefit from the experiences of other leaders who were on the same business path that he was. Jaime has a lot of great things to say about masterminds and wants to encourage you to get into one as soon as you can. You can hear his challenge on this episode. Success is not in what you achieve, it’s in the goals you set. When it comes to business success most people measure it in terms of dollar signs. That’s a worthy aspiration and one that has to be in place in order to truly be profitable. But Jaime Jay says that he’s learned that viewing that long term goal as the measure of success is a sure way to become discouraged and impatient. Instead, he measures success by setting goals for each day and the accomplishment of those goals. That way he’s able to have victories every day, build momentum, and stay optimistic about the path he’s on and the ultimate results that will come from the little, daily victories. Paul Colligan - The Back Story There's a great story about this podcast that I would like to share with you before I really dive into who Paul is and what transpired during this episode. So, to start things off, I have to go back to February of 2014 in sunny San Diego. I went to an event where I was fortunate enough to speak with an expert panel in front of 300+ peers in my industry. It was a fairly nerve racking experience and if the super animated crowd of 300+ anxious event goer's weren't enough, I was sharing the stage with a couple people I really looked up to. I had been following them, at this point, for a couple years and have learned so much from them that I actually used what they taught me in my own business. Guess what? It works. This takes me to my introduction to Paul Colligan. He was one of the co-hosts of the event. If you are anything like me, then you really enjoy live events. Especially if they are produced well with tons of great content and entertaining speakers. Paul is definitely an entertaining speaker. Anyone attending an event where Paul is speaking can see how much passion Paul has for his craft. Sometimes, it's almost as if he forgets to breathe when he's talking becuase it seems he can hardly wait to tell you about his next thought. I liken it to a child who just gets back from Disneyland and wants to tell you all about their day. Only difference? Paul is talking tech. Without getting too far off track, I was able to meet and talk with Paul for the first time in person. It was a really cool feeling. He had been talking about "multicasting" at this particular event. Multicasting is a way in which you can create content once via video and reproduce the content multiple times by extracting the content and making a book out of it, posting blogs, pulling the audio and uploading the audio to a podcast, etc. I was particularly interested in podcasting. After I got to listen to Paul speak about the power of podcasting and how easy and fun it was, I had to get started. Now, here's what I did next... ready? NOTHING! There are three ways to make money with podcasting... direct, indirect and integrated. - Paul Colligan Can you believe that? After that big build up at the event, I did nothing. What the heck is wrong with me? As you get to learn more about Paul today and in the future, you will learn that he is full of "Action". He doesn't just preach... he practices what he preaches. He hangs out with other action takers and that is who Paul Colligan is. A couple months later, I listened to Paul's podcast again and I finally got off my lazy arse and got to work on my show. I never looked back since. One of the reasons I got involved in podcasting is because of Paul. I won't ever be able to thank him for all his words of wisdom that helped motivate me to stop riding the pine and get in the game (ah, see what I mean by the title of the show now)? He was asking what everyone's goal was for the new year. I responded by saying "I would like to interview Paul Colligan" His reply was a simple one-word answer... "Done". That was that. It was the end of the year and tons of things were happening with the holidays, but the new year couldn't come soon enough. Paul talks about utilizing the podcasting platform so that the "little guys" or the "mom and pop outfits" can now play in the big leagues. Thought this story could resonate with you in that you really can do what you want as long as you set your mind to it and take action.
