The point of this podcast is to better fuel your drive so you achieve more fulfillment. I've met few people who want to talk about death. We avoid it like…death. It's black and dark and to be feared. At least in our culture. But seven months ago my Dad got a surprise cancer diagnosis, and he died six weeks later. I was fortunate to walk with him daily until his last breath. I went from zero exposure to death, to full exposure. And it's altered my life. My brother Jared Angaza was there as well, and he participated intimately as a death doula, walking with my Dad intimately in his personal care and spiritual ponderings. We'd never heard the term “death doula” before. Well, divinely, I was contacted by an agency about having Alua Arthur on this podcast. Alua is the most visible death doula working in America today. She trains and educates other death doulas to walk with people in the end days of their lives, from basic planning to nurturing their souls and the lives of their loved ones. Alua has spent literally thousands of hours with people as they contemplate their mortality when regrets, secret joys, hidden affairs, and dim realities are finally revealed aloud. It is for this insight I wanted to talk with her. Her TED Talk, “Why thinking about death helps you live a better life” has 1.5 million views. She has been featured on CBS's The Doctors and I've now seen her in Disney's “Limitless” docu-series with Chris Hemsworth. Alua's journey to death work started when her family fled a murderous coup d'etat in Ghana. She went on to become a lawyer, but after walking with a close friend through his death, she devoted herself to walking with others and educating us on what we can gain in our lives today, from considering our death in the future, instead of avoiding it. I'll be referencing Alua's new book, Briefly Perfectly Human: Making an Authentic Life By Getting Real About The End, which is her raw, no holds barred, honest, and frequently hilarious memoir that shares her powerful message with people all around the world. You can also find out more at Goingwithgrace.com. I sat down to talk with Alua about how her insights with death can help us lead more authentically driven and rewarding lives, right now. This is my Big Idea & Action episode where I pull out the key highlights from our series on transforming conflict. Our catalyst was William Ury, one of the world's best-known experts on negotiation, and the co-author of Getting to Yes, the world's all-time bestselling book on the topic with more than 15 million copies sold. He's a co-founder of Harvard's Program on Negotiation and his brand new book and our muse for part one in this series, is, POSSIBLE: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict. I also had a conversation in the previous episode with my co-host and brother, Jared Angaza who has served domestically and overseas as a conflict negotiator. It was in the conversation I had an epiphany, which I'm about to share in what turned out to be seven key highlights that stood out to me. This episode is part 3 in my series on Inner Mastery. We think what drives us is the desire for something...out there. It's having a goal and wanting the goal so much that we're motivated enough to do what it takes to achieve it. This is how we parent. I've done it too. Provide an incentive. "Here is what you'll get...what you can have...if you'll get up and do the work." It can work, but it's a short term solution. Once the prize is achieved you go back to square one. What we want is to be people who are always motivated toward positive results. Again, you are always driven. But your drive is fueled by fear or desire. You can be driving backwards, you can be driven off on time wasting detours. You can be driven to massive wrecks. We all want to be driven to wake up daily and make positive progress toward fulfilling destinations, and regardless of the destination, be enjoying the ride. This comes from inner mastery. Note, don't hear "mastery" as a noun. A destination. Think of it as a verb. More like...inner mastering. Always growing. My expert in part one and two was Hitendra Wadhwa, a professor at Columbia Business School where his class on Personal Leadership & Success is one of the most popular classes. Hitendra's new book is titled, INNER MASTERY, OUTER IMPACT: How Your Five Core Energies Hold the Key to Success. Here I have my brother and frequent co-host, Jared Angaza on to discuss these five keys, as in my long talk with Hitendra we never got past the first key, purpose. Next are wisdom, growth, love, and self-realization. My interest is digging into how we have cultural meanings programmed into us and misperceive all five core energies, and how we can get them flowing to better inform and direct our drive You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. We continue our discussion on misbelief and strive to get to the heart of how our beliefs primarily exist to serve and protect us. However they are seldom if ever, fact. I want you to hear that. Few if any of your beliefs are fact. They are not right and other's are wrong. And a dramatic amount of your current problems and stresses and relational issues are due to your unhealthy relationship with your so called beliefs. Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics Dan Arielly claims they are mostly in truth, “misbeliefs.” His book, MISBELIEF: WHAT MAKES RATIONAL PEOPLE BELIEVE IRRATIONAL THINGS, is our muse for this series. My co host this discussion is my brother, Jared Angaza. Who every once in a while I'll remind you that while our last names are different and we look nothing alike, we have the same parents. Supposedly. But through a lifetime of pursuing wisdom, we've seen the early beliefs of our upbringing…change. Evolve. Get rejected. So we're going to try and get to some root issues of what our beliefs are actually useful for, and when they are not. And ultimately I hope we can showcase the great freedom there is in trading in the word belief, for the term of…faith. Today's episode is a tribute to Dan Miller. He was a well-loved man, a mentor, and a friend to many podcasters and entrepreneurs, including myself. He is the author of the New York Times best-selling book, 48 Days To The Work You Love. In December, Dan was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and he just passed away on the weekend. My deepest condolences go out to his wife, Joanne, and their children, Kevin Miller, Ashley Logsdon, and Jared Angaza. From The MM Vault For today's episode, I have accessed our interview from the Mindfulness Mode vault of past episodes. I talked with Dan in July of 2020 and decided to share the conversation with you today. Dan Miller has been a guest on CBS' ‘The Early Show,' MSNBC's ‘Hardball with Chris Mathews, and the Dave Ramsey Show. Dan has spoken at the White House Christian Fellowship and is in high demand as an expert on new opportunities in today's changing workplace. His 48 Days Podcast consistently ranks in the top 3 under Careers on iTunes. The 48DaysEagles.com community is viewed worldwide as an example for those seeking to find – or create – work they love. We wrap up our series on Happierness featuring Atlantic columnist and Harvard Professor Arthur Brooks, and Oprah Winfrey, who just co authored the book, “Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier.” In the last episode I also talked with my brother, Jared Angaza, and we discussed further aspects of this grand, cultural pursuit of happiness and what is at the root of it. This is my Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action episode to distill it all down, and I found six primary issues around happiness that stood out from our conversations. Let's walk through them together You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. We continue our series on Happierness which we kicked off with Atlantic columnist and Harvard Professor, Arthur Brooks. Arthur's new book with Oprah Winfrey is called Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. This issue of happiness is significant to me for two reasons: 1) happiness is such a hot topic because we as a culture are not finding ourselves…happy, and 2) I feel we are mostly dealing with the symptoms regarding happiness and not the root issues. To dig further into what I feel are root issues, I have with me…Jared Angaza. Jared is a strategist, activist, and storyteller behind many influential brands and campaigns. And he's my brother and business partner and someone who I ponder the topics of drive and motive and meaning with…a lot You can watch this full episodes on YouTube - just search for “What Drives You with Kevin Miller” What Drives You is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping Life and Leadership coaches. I wrap up our series on perfectionism and how it is hurting our drive. This is the Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action episode to distill it all down. Being a perfectionist is not something to be proud of, and it in fact points toward our inability to be authentic and a propensity to people please and perform. It points to our insecurity, not strength. My catalyst and expert for the series was Thomas Curran, a professor in the Department of Psychological and Behavioral Science at the London School of Economics. Thomas studies the personality characteristic of perfectionism, how it develops, and how it impacts our mental health. His TED talk on our dangerous obsession with perfectionism has received more than three million views. In part three I brought on my brother, Jared Angaza, to discuss our journeys as seeking perfectionists who thought we were being valiant but ultimately realize we were attempting to fill our self-identity voids. Come with me as I boil down the highlights of what I've found out, and am striving to learn. We continue this series on Focus, highlighting that it's not about gritting your teeth, but in changing your paradigm on what focus is and how to harness the focus that you do have within you. Our expert is Dandapani, a world renowned, leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus, and author of, The Power of Unwavering Focus. Listen to my previous talk with him in part one, or just type “dandapani focus” in your search engine and you'll see his TED talk with 6.7 million views. Today I bring in a long time devotee of Dandapani's who has been studying his work and teaching on focus for many years. My brother, Jared Angaza. We kick off discussing Dandapani's statement that “most people surrender their decision-making process to their environment. And it takes discipline to take ownership. This led into an organic discussion on discipline and how we as a culture misperceive what discipline really is. If you feel you are undisciplined, overall or in certain areas, I invite you to listen in, as the conversation brought some revelations to me. We continues on then, digging further into how to have more focus in our lives, and for disclosure, Jared and I both struggle with ADHD, so this is an acutely relevant topic to us. This is the wrap up to my series on perception, which continues to be a prominent issue for me amongst the whole concept of personal development. As long as we perceive our reality to be factual reality, we are greatly limited and handicapped. I brought on an expert on perception, Lynda-Ross Vega. She and clinical psychologist Gary Jordan developed the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. Their book is Unlock the Power of Your Perception. After talking in depth with Lynda-Ross, then talking further in part two of the series with my brother, Jared Angaza, I've pulled out 5 aspects of perspective style I'm working to learn from. We've been looking at the idea of an inherent perception style. Meaning, that you have a hard wired perception style. You will naturally experience life a certain way. The expert I brought in to discuss this is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda-Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. Their book, and my muse, is Unlock the Power of Your Perception. I discussed the concept with Lynda-Ross in the previous episode. Here I bring my brother, Jared Angaza, in to discuss this further. We accept the concept of an inherent perception style. Jared actually has twins and testifies to them having a different perception style, right out of the womb. However, we agree on the ability to understand our inherent perception style, not judge it as right or wrong, and wield it according to what will serve ourselves, others, and the situation best. Listen in to see if you agree and are game to understand and leverage your perception style. This is part three of my series on Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani, cofounder of MindValley and author of Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living An Imperfectly Authentic Life. This is my discussion episode and I brought back my brother, Jared Angaza, as I know him to be someone who has fervently pursued the discovery and continual alignment with his authentic self. The tagline of this Self Helpful podcast is, “elevate your personal experience and the way you show up for others”, and Jared coined it. In this show we dig further into aspects of what it means to be authentic and he brings up the aspect of before we can show up authentically for others, we need to first show up authentically for ourselves. And many of us have never known our authentic selves, and we have work to do to discover who that is. We cover a primary way to start that you can begin today. It would be great if we could just snap our fingers and be present, and realize a positively altered state. But most of us can't, so we must all look at what we need to do to facilitate it. We start by discussing space and the overview effect, made famous now by William Shatner. Captain Kirk himself. He literally went into space, Jared was involved in the project, and it forever changed his view of earth and life. Most of us can't do that, but what can we do? That's our show. I'm a 6' tall, slim white man. I have an automobile, house, job and good income. No felonies. Imagine if myself and nine other identical men all created profiles on a dating app and that's all we put. How many inquiries would we get? Probably zero. This is our world and marketplace today. No matter who you are or what you do, everyone is looking to know your story before they spend a minute or a dollar on you. They are looking for context on connecting points to determine if they find resonance with you or not. This is Part 3 of my series on Miriam Schulman. Her new book is called Artpreneur: The Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Sustainable Living from Your Creativity. If you are involved, or want to be, in the fine arts, and make a living at it, she is your guru. On a bigger scale she brings the message of how creativity and art in your work is a necessity in today's overcrowded marketplace. I continue this discussion today with my frequent co-host Jared Angaza. Jared is a brand architect who has recently devoted himself to helping the space community tell their story. His expertise is in doing that, helping us all tell our story so we have the chance to connect with others, whether personally or professionally. He's also my blood brother and who is helping me tell my story as a podcast host and author so you know if I'm someone you care to listen to or not! In this show we really hone in on not only the opportunity, but the absolute necessity to tell your story or get left behind. Looking at our work, what you do is no longer enough. You can't be the best, nobody will believe that. But you can be unique. You are unique, even if you don't realize it. Just as you must put on clothes to go to work, if you want opportunity in the marketplace, or trying to get a date, you've got to communicate who you are. Your identity. This is the only way people can know if they want to connect with you or not. If you try to play it safe and remain storyless, you'll get just that. Less. And in today's culture, letting your identity be known shows confidence, while remaining hidden makes you suspect. Be authentic, this isn't about performing and being a show pony. It's again, just like a personal profile in a dating app, merely sharing who you are and what you're about as a service to people who might be interested. Imagine yourself stepping onto a tennis court, golf course, or dance floor for the first time and immediately having correct form and performing perfectly. It's a dumb concept as we all know it's impossible. To even be decent requires a good bit of training and practice. Now think of all the relationships in your life. Did you have training in how to relate well? Did you practice specific relational tactics and techniques in order to be a great listener, conversationalist and expertly hone your personal relationship skills? It's doubtful. To make matters more challenging, we actually, all, had some poor relationship skills taught to us so we come into all relationships with some poor and unhealthy form. To start improving we must first audit ourselves. This is part three of my series on Nedra Glover Tawwab and her brand new book, Drama Free. In this episode I'm joined by my frequent co-host, and brother, Jared Angaza. Yep, full blood brother and different last name. I asked Jared to join me because he's done so much work in his own relational journey and he understands the challenges, and the benefits. We really give focus to the need and opportunity of getting clear on your relational dysfunctions. Even in the absolute best of families with great love, acceptance, and support, there are no perfect people. And as you are imperfect, you will likely adopt unhealthy perspectives around some relational concepts regardless. So getting your learned and adopted dysfunctions on the table is the first step in you having drama free relationships, as Nedra is leading us. Nedra Glover Tawwab is a New York Times best-selling author, licensed therapist, and sought-after relationship expert. You can find her on Instagram where 1.6M people are following her relational guidance. And find her new book, Drama Free, anywhere. When you break it down and really look at it, nearly all our attempts to love others are action based. They are things we do. One of the bestselling self-help books of all time is The 5 Love Languages and it cites words of affirmation, receiving gifts, quality time, physical touch and acts of service. But all of those are…acts. Things we do. And yet where we feel the most love from people is not in any act, but in them connecting with us. Being love, in essence, not doing love. This is part 3 on the message from Humble The Poet and his new book, How To Be Loved. Today I'm talking about Humble and his message with again, my brother, Jared Angaza. I just keep having guests that are right in Jared's wheelhouse of experience, so I brought him back on. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback about Jared and his insight, and as you hear me mention in this show, he's the brand and culture architect behind my new look, which you can see at kevinmiller.co. You can connect with him at jaredangaza.com. Here we also take aim at the idea of you not being able to love others beyond the extent to which you love yourself. What we came to is…you can loathe yourself and still do…a lot of loving. You can do a lot of acts of love. But it's pretty impossible to be the love they need, if you can't be the love you need for yourself. It's a big distinction. What this episode will do is help you see why so many of your efforts to love others don't end up being the love they really need and you're killing yourself for nothing. You can make a shift, and quit wearing yourself out, and finally connect in a way that matters to you and those you…love. The Self-Help(ful) podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches to help leaders and top performers excel professionally and personally. Industry thought leaders discuss, how do we make space available for everyone? Featuring Oroville science advisor André Bormanis, "October Sky" protagonist, Homer Hickam, Dan Hawk, Jared Angaza, and Dr. Shawna Pandya.
When will you be enough? The question bothers me. I'm a fan of growing and striving and achieving and to a fair degree I feel it is a responsibility to do so. There are aspects of myself I'm not satisfied with. And yet a primary tenet of emotional health is to be ok with yourself, right now. Can you come to a place of being enough right now, even though you're not content to just stop and coast from here on in your life? Still be an aspiring person? This is part 3 of my series on Peter Moo - tar -bar - ze who lived a horrifically abused and neglected life in Africa from his birth in a small town outside of Uganda up living on the streets till age 15, when thanks to the opportunity afforded to him by one family, he went on to attend and graduate from universities and ultimately move to America where he's an entrepreneur, foster father, and now author of the book, “Now I am Known”. I invited my brother, Jared Angaza, to cohost with me again, as Jared spent a decade in Africa working amongst street kids like Peter. We talk a bit about his experience, but our primary discussion landed on what Jared cited as the epidemic of enoughness that seems to span all of humanity, whether you lived on the streets and slept in a sewer in Africa, or you lived in a million dollar home in Beverly Hills. Find Peter's book, Know I Am Known, a self-help classic in my opinion, anywhere and visit Nowiamknownfoundation.org to connect with Peter and his incredible story.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
As you listen right now, you are likely thinking of hearing or learning something of interest, and something that will help equip or direct you toward more of what you want from life. We are all here striving to grow and better ourselves for an end result. Otherwise you'd just be listening to music or listening to a crime or comedy show. And I'm a full out believer in this concept of learning and growing which is the point of this Self-Helpful podcast. And, I'm ever more interested in seeing a challenge or commitment catapulting our learning curve from zero to hero almost overnight and in some aspects, bypassing all this stuff. Meaning, you can listen to a year of my shows. This summer my book, “What Drives You” comes out, but you can skip that. And instead just make a big commitment to something you care about, and it will do more to shape you than any amount of content, teaching and guidance. This is the message we got from legendary visionary and humanitarian Lynne Twist in her book, "Living a Committed Life: Finding Freedom and Fulfillment in a Purpose Larger Than Yourself.” This is part 3 on Lynne and her message and I invited a special guest to co-host the discussion with me. Jared Angaza is an activist and philanthropist. He spent over a decade in Rwanda and Kenya working to pull women and children out of sex slavery. As of late he has devoted himself to the space industry, specifically Space For Humanity, and advocating the overview effect recently made famous by Star Trek celebrity William Shatner. Those are mere bookends of a life dedicated to big efforts. Jared cites Lynne Twist as a primary inspiration to his life and has lived what Lynne talks about and experienced the devotion to a cause as the most profound tool for shaping him into the kind of person who can make a world impact. Jared is also my full on blood brother. While in Africa he changed his last name from Miller to Angaza to fully embrace his purpose, passion and vision. Following is our discussion on how this message of commitment from Lynne Twist has played out in Jared's life and the lives of others we've walked with. You'll also hear some brotherly riffing on some past adventures. You can find Jared at Jaredangaza.com, and of course find Lynne Twist's book, Living a Committed Life, anywhere. In this episode of the Motive Podcast I’m hitting on a key ingredient of our motives, and it’s how we feel about ourselves. I realized many of the good habits I engage with everyday, while all good and well, have less value in and of themselves in comparison to simply making me feel good about myself. I became aware of how important it is that we feel proud of ourselves, and that so often we are trying to push ahead in our lives and we are not...feeling proud of ourselves. I brought Jared Angaza on the show to talk about the issue. This is not an interview but a candid discussion and as you’ll hear, a discovery, of the power and nuances of how proud, or not, we feel about ourselves. And yes, we unpack some of the baggage around the word, “proud”. By the end you’ll hear that the discussion helped clarify and add much to Jared’s and my understanding of the issue. If you missed episode 21 of the Motive podcast, I walked with Jared through his story of motive, and it was significant. Jared, by the way, is my brother! If you are intrigued by what he shares, find him at jaredangaza.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Let me take you on the most epic motive story to date. From the bowels of the Nashville music scene, to building airplanes for one of the father’s of mountain biking, to saving women and children out of sex slavery in Africa, to today sending people to space in an effort to change human perception, democratize space, and improve the state of the World. Jared Angaza is the Strategy Director for Space For Humanity and serves on a global environmental protection council and this is his story of what motivated him from gutters to mountain tops. The point as always is so you can see and find yourself as we share the common plight of man, and become inspired and equipped to hear first hand how getting clarity on one’s motives will take you to the heights you truly desire. Jared is also...my brother. Though we share the same parents, our last names are different. You’ll hear the motive behind that too. This was as raw a discussion as I’ve had, as I know more about Jared than most guests, and because he’s one of the more “woke” people I know. His level of personal awareness and introspection is rare, even more so when combined with a completely down to earth perspective. Even his elevated place in space is aimed right back here at our own terra firma out of love for the humans that tread upon it. Find him at jaredangaza.com Learn more about your ad choices. How does one become an authentic activist that can truly make a difference? Identity Architect, philanthropist, Space for Humanity Strategist and activist Jared Angaza joins Press The Damn Button to discuss his journey and his advice for all of us in regards to strengthening our empathy muscle to change the world. Jared was the very first person I reached out to as I was building out the strategy and value proposition of this podcast. Jared and I met in the hallway of the San Diego Convention Center as I was speaking at Social Media Marketing World 2019 and a mutual friend of ours said we should connect. As with most events things are chaotic and meeting new people usually goes as far as small talk, a couple of interesting filler moments then exchanging information and saying lets talk soon. With Jared it was different... Jared isn't like anyone I've ever met and his presences within the first two minutes captivated me and we ended up talking for almost 90 minutes before realizing we should have been recording the entire conversation as we started sharing our philosophies on empathy, change and the role we each play in making the world a better place. Soon after that conversation we got on Skype and talked for multiple hours and a true bond and friendship had begun. I was a guest on his podcast Noetic in April and I can honestly say it was the most profound and dynamic guest spot I've ever done. Listen here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/brian-fanzo-the-humanity-of-social-media/id1179441785?i=1000437000530 At the time we met so much of our focus was collaborating to bridge our worlds and unique backgrounds to make a difference and to help people change through our actions. The conversations we had back then weren't around Covid19 or Black Lives Matter or George Floyd but the message we shared was no different than the message so many are taking a stand for in the summer of 2020. On this episode we breakdown a wide range of topics including: How he's helped me realize that my silent support of BLM was actually more compliance than anything else and why I must become a better ANTI-RACIST and how the words we use truly do matter. We discuss Jared's lifelong commitment to activism and what he has learned, the optimism he has for the future and what keeps him going even when it seems in many cases the bad continues to repeat itself. Jared shares how he manages the balance of business and his role as a strategist for the International Human Space Program with his passion and life's work on pressing the buttons that matter to stand up for the injustices built into the systems and world culture today. --- FOLLOW JARED -- MUST READ MEDIUM Resources: https://medium.com/@jaredangaza Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jaredangaza/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaredangaza Noetic Podcast: http://noeticpodcast.com/resources/ -- Podcast sponsored and powered by Restream.io -- EXCLUSIVE OFFER from our Sponsor Restream: 50% off discount for the lifetime of Restream ENDS OF OCTOBER 31st! Her Other Book Mentioned: The Book of Beasties Sarah's Website: FollowYourFeelGood.com Help me out and leave an iTunes review! How Good Are You Willing to Let it Get? No matter what type of fear, procrastination, or resistance gremlins enter your life, there is always one thing you can control that will stop their invasion: your energy. Will you allow these negative forces to drain and taint your energy, or will you take control of your energy and use it to learn, reflect, and move closer to your visions? Over many years, I have intermittently struggled with allowing myself to feel my happiest because of some sort of external factor that was bothering me. Sometimes this shows up in the form of depression, full-body inflammation, or a lack of self-worth and often leads to a downward spiral. Because of the negative experiences, I sometimes created imaginary limitations for myself in an attempt to establish protection from more bad experiences moving forward. I was removing parts of my life that brought me happiness and love because I was scared that something might go wrong and make me unhappy. I was settling for a middle ground of simply existing rather than experiencing. Does this seem familiar? You see, the security blanket is actually the problem in itself. We hold ourselves back from our dreams because we are afraid we will fall on our face. In other words, we aren’t allowing ourselves to reach our heightened states of mind, body, and spirit. We aren’t willing to let allow ourselves to blossom into the flowers we can be. We are sacrificing our lives to fear. So, How Good Are You Willing to Let it Get? What happens if you let love in? What happens if you say yes to everything that excites you? What happens if you trust in your intuition? What happens if you release your fears and doubts? How will things change if you surrender, let go, and become one with your passions? “it is a mess out there, but sit up tall, smile, and laugh. that’s your work.” I first heard Sarah Seidelmann talk on a podcast she did with a mentor of mine, Jared Angaza, on "the wisdom of the wild things,” and I was immediately catapulted into a stronger, happier mindset. She’s one of those rare people that can change the way you look at life in its entirety with just a few words. Sarah spent two decades practising medicine, specializing in surgical pathology, and raising her family. But something started shifting in her, drawing her into an exploration of deeper creativity, nature and intuition. She wanted to figure out what would make her FEEL GOOD all the time, and how she could apply her experiences to help others do the same. So, she took a six-month sabbatical from her job and started exploring. Well, when you follow your bliss, magical things start to happen. Sarah followed hers through shamanic journeying, animal totems, and an interesting meeting with one of her spirit guides, Alice the Elephant. To date, Sarah and Alice have co-authored multiple books, including their newest release, How Good Are You Willing to Let It Get? Daily FEELGOOD Inspiration for Creatives, Healers, and Helpers. (Secret**: She has a card deck coming soon too!) I’m ecstatic to have Sarah on this episode of Never Stop Peaking, as we explore universal synchronicity, spirit-animal guides, the magic of nature, shamanic journeying, life transportations, the creative process, and more.
Alan Weisman's book Countdown changed my strategy to the environment. It ranks among the top most influential works I've read, watched, or come across, up there with Limits to Growth. Why? Because when you look at environmental issues enough, and it shouldn't take too long these days, population always rises to the top as one of the top issues. Many people today hear about projections that the population will level off around 10 billion. Actually, the ones I see project that the population will keep growing exponentially then, just slower than now.If you only look at one issue---only climate, only deforestation, or only extinctions---they seem possibly solvable, but they're all linked. Solving several at once---say meeting power needs while the economy falls apart and food becomes scarce---looks impossible. Also, since nothing deliberate limits population growth, we're lucky if it levels off. We aren't choosing where to level it off and 10 billion looks three to five times what the Earth can sustain. Cultural changes could promote more growth. Many populations are promoting maximum growth today---very powerful religions and autocratic rulers for example.I don't want to rely on luck for our species' survival. Besides, my research into what Earth can sustain says that we're over the limit. If we're heading toward a cliff, simply maintaining our speed and not accelerating doesn't stop us. We have to decelerate.Despite the convergence of all these issues, for years I held back from talking about population. People don't like others meddling in their personal lives. I don't want the government in my bedroom. People overwhelmingly associate population talk with China's one child policy, eugenics, and Nazis. I did too. I didn't see how I could improve a situation by suggesting to avoid misery later through misery now.Still, I knew some cultures---island nations that lived centuries or longer, for example, or the bushmen in southern Africa whose archeological record went back hundreds of thousands of years---kept their populations level, so they must have developed some mechanism. In some past episode of this podcast, with Jared Angaza, for example, I pondered aloud how to find out how they did it, though it may have come up when I was a guest on his podcast. I could only wonder what worked but couldn't promote what I didn't know.Countdown changed all that. Alan found and reported on numerous examples in today's world of cultures lowering their birth rates without coercion, without top-down government authority, voluntarily, desired by all participants, leading to abundance, prosperity, peace, and stability, the opposite of where overpopulation takes us.Countdown tells stories of 21 places, some promoting growth and results aren't pretty and some where they've lowered birth rates and they're remarkably pleasant, even prosperous and stable. He talks about the top ones in this episode. We have tough times ahead of us. One change simplifies everything---a smaller population achieved voluntarily, peacefully, joyfully. Alan has researched firsthand more than almost anyone. He has more than enough reason to despair if he wanted to. If he's not, I conclude that everything he's found nets out to say we can do this.Family planning, education, and contraception seem technologies and practices that can work more than carbon sequestration, solar planes, and everything else. They're cheap, they're available, they make sex more fun, they've overcome cultural resistance outside the gates of the Vatican!Read his books and Limits to Growth.I'll do my best to bring him back.Past episodes I based on Alan's books258: The World Without Us, by Alan Weisman251: Let's make overpopulation only a finance issue250: Why talk about birthrate and population so much?248: Countdown, a book I recommend by Alan Weisman See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Nadav Wilf is a spiritual entrepreneur. We met through a mutual friend. He’s worked alongside Peter Diamandis at XPRIZE and HeroX and built his own digital nomad empire. He’s a beautiful soul and it was an honor to have a chance to talk to Nadav about his journey and the lessons he’s learned along the way. We talked about envisioning the future and then taking steps to manifest it, while you continue to believe it is possible. Where do you want to be? How do you want to feel? That’s where your focus should be. Not on the lack, but on the possibility. Nadav teaches the art of "Feeling good as a foundation for success", because feeling good is the goal, and is in fact “success”. We need to have the vibration and feeling of what it would feel like to be “successful”. That’s how we attract that success. "We have to be open to the unknown. I know why I want a thing, but I’m open to how it comes to me.” "I focus on my vibration more than anything else." People asked him when he was going to grow up, get a job, and stop all of the spiritual mumbo jumbo. That would trigger him but when he stayed in the vibration of love, he was able to receive them as love and respond in love. That’s certainly in line with my idea of success. It took time to be grateful for everything, from the sheets and pillows to the people in his life to his breathe, he centered his life around gratitude and doing things that feel good. If he feels bad, he surrenders to it and listens to his body. He asks some vital questions. Can I think a better feeling thought about this? Can I do something that feels better that isn’t about this? Or can I just feel good about feeling bad right now and let it pass through me? We talked about the importance of self love and living as "The Vibration of Love”. Self love starts with forgiveness. We have to start with forgiving ourselves. We have to become better and better at loving ourselves. We have to maintain a practice of attuning our awareness. We have to constantly check in with ourselves and be diligent about being aware. "We win when we’re in the moment.” "Time is made up by humans.” Nadav Wilf I’m grateful there are people like Nadav out there doing meaningful work. He’s an inspiration for all of us. Check out his work. The links are in the list below.

Joshua Spodek is an NYU Professor, TEDx Speaker, best selling author, astrophysicist, and host of the Leadership and the Environment podcast. Josh was on the show two years ago and we’ve become great friends since. With his new book coming out, I wanted to get him back on the show for another interview. In this episode, we talk about what it’s like to truly live by your values, in a way that brings you joy, rather than a feeling of obligation or sacrifice. Josh is a genius when it comes to effective leadership and living an authentic life that brings you, and others, joy. We talk about the fact that most activists and leaders are stuck in the habit of making demands and trying to guilt people into perspective and behavioral change. However, facts and figures don’t usually get people to change. Josh offers some profound advice on how to more effectively incite behavioral change that comes from true desire, rather than a feeling of obligation. Living in harmony with our planet is not an obligation, it’s an opportunity to live a happier, more purposeful and fulfilling life. Decluttering and minimizing and living deliberately isn't about lowering your quality of life, it’s about raising it. It’s widely believed that we must change our mindset in order to change our behavior. However, Josh has found that very often, just changing our behavior can begin to shift our perspective. Experiences are what form our beliefs, so when we have new ones, they affect the way we see the world, and what we believe to be true. We have enough technology and information to heal the planet and live harmoniously with nature. The real question is “will we choose to do it”? What would your life look like if you lived by your deepest values? Four Steps to Living By Your Values Here are Josh’s four steps to living by your values that he shared on the show. Ask yourself the question, "What does the environment mean to you?" Think about the emotions, feelings, etc. that come up with that question. What do you value about the environment around you? Think of something you could do to act on that value. Not the biggest thing, just a simple step that is in line with your values. Once one small thing you could do today? Make it a SMART Goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Bound) It should be specific, like a type of plastic, or packaging, or something like that. It should have a timeline on it. Create some form of accountability for making it happen. Tell someone what you’re doing and commit to doing it in a specific way in a specific time period. Design your own ways of reminding yourself of your values so you can hold fast to them. There is no greater joy than to give yourself to a purpose greater than yourself that elevates the human experience. It’s only the first stage (5%) of the work that requires the most self-discipline or willpower. But once you experience the benefits of living that way, it transforms into simply continuing to uphold behavior that brings you the most joy. Our best life is available to us any time we want it. We just have to be clear about what we value, and commit ourselves to live by those values. Josh’s incite almost makes it sound easy. And perhaps it truly is.
Frank White is a Space Philosopher, author, and Instructor at the Harvard Extension School. He published the first edition of The Overview Effect in 1987 and I read it about a decade ago. Years later, a short documentary was created, called Overview, to articulate the essence of the book. A few years later they created a full documentary, called Planetary that expanded on the nature and opportunity of the Overview Effect. That book and two films have influenced me profoundly. Frank’s “language” is part of the fabric of my being at this point. That body of work played a major role in inspiring me to create this podcast a few years ago. In late 2016, I contacted Frank through the Harvard website, just to express my gratitude for his influence in my life. A few months later, he responded and said we should chat sometime. We did, and we’ve had a beautiful relationship since. We talk once or twice a month and I’m so grateful to have a friendship like this with one of my heroes. I love Frank’s perspective and his approach to life. His thoughts on us being “citizens of the universe on Spaceship Earth” provide a beautiful investment in our perspective of our place in the universe. He’s helping to create a holistic “space philosophy” so we don’t repeat mistakes we’ve made in past explorations in ways like Columbus and other explorers did. With hindsight from that, we can now be more intentional. I hope you enjoy this heart-open, humanity soaked conversation with Frank White. He’s a true hero with a philosophy that can help us come back into alignment with one another, and our cosmos. Enjoy!
I’ve been writing notes down about this concept for a while. And I’ve been excited to share it with you. It feels like it’s largely the exposé of my full ethos on life. After writing it out and then reviewing it, I realize the weight of what I’ve articulated here. I know this is a pretty heady title. I was actually going to title this, Falling Away From Union, But I figured The Meaning of Life was probably a more effective headline. The following ideas are reflections of my ethos, my perspective, and my journey. It’s personal. And sharing it, for me, is risky. At this point in my life, I’m ok with that. I talk about the importance of authenticity all the time. So here’s me revealing my most personal thoughts about, what I feel is the meaning of life. While in conversation with friends the other day, I worked my way into a point where I said, “wait a minute, I think I actually just figured out what I believe to be the meaning of life”. It’s not every day that happens, so I thought I’d share the thought process with you. In this episode, I discuss: What (not who) is God? What is sin? (or at least what does that Christian reference refer to?) What is the opposite of love? The role of the mind and our thoughts. And… What’s the meaning of life? When we ask the big questions like, “Who and I and why am I here”, we are going to end up in a discussion about “what is love”? I’m excited for you to join me on this journey!
Every year I take the months of November and December to deconstruct my identity and my brands and refine and improve them. I always use this time to sort of reinvent myself and get clear about what I want to experience in the next year. I take time to write out my New Years Intentions and I set those intentions every day of that following year. It’s part of my morning and evening routines. I’m grateful for what I experienced last year and eager to experience all the wonder and adventures this next year will bring into my life. This episode is not only the first for this new year, it’s also the launch of the new show brand and format. I explain the reason for the relaunch and what to expect from the new show and a bit about our new and growing community here in San Diego and the more formalized “tribe” that is growing out of that community. I think “wonder is our medicine” and I’m excited to share with you the story behind the new show.
Since appearing on his podcast, he and I have become friends. You can't hear it in this recording, but since meeting on line, I've met him in San Diego, where I stayed in his guest bedroom, meet his family, and cooked my famous no-packaging vegetable stew together. So this episode is more personal.Jared has acted more than most to live by his environmental values, so you'll get to hear someone not complaining. You get to hear people who have acted sharing our experiences. If you haven't acted and mean to, you'll hear that from other side. We don't complain, though we wonder why people don't act.To me this was an open, honest conversation among people who are making meaningful changes in their lives and enjoying it. The leadership part of this podcast is about that joy, as well as meaning, value, importance, and purpose.I hope this conversation showed that you'll enjoy changing when it's to live by your values and you'll wish you had earlier. Yes, you'll stop doing some things you are. Think of great historical change -- civil rights, slavery, and so on. People who made big changes are glad they did.Incidentally, Jared introduced me to people who held an event where I spoke on leadership and the environment while cooking my famous no-packaging vegetable stew for 50 people See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
I’m always looking for patterns and little elements that come up that may need adjustment in my life. If something is out of place, or bringing me down, I want to try and transform it or eliminate it. I want to be deliberate and intentional. Lately, I’ve noticed something. I’ve noticed my feeling of unease and frustration when comparisons start creeping into a conversation. It seems benign at first, or may even go unnoticed. But then it starts to turn into this toxic ooze that permeates the whole conversation. It takes over. It turns the conversation into something that it wasn’t about. It becomes about comparing the thing I was talking about, to something else. That sort of robs us from the ability to appreciate something for what it is on its own. If I observe something and compare it to something else, I have no choice but to judge the situation in order to articulate the comparison. The act of comparing things seems to be a sure way to devalue and degrade something. It’s come up for me a lot, so here are my thoughts on the topic of comparison, and how we might choose a more life-giving path.
On this episode we’ll be taking an insider look at…"Leading by example"…And why it might need to mean something very divergent than it used to!We all know that as a leader you are an example… but has sayings it become a cliche that means very little? If we are going to lead by example have we actually taken the time to self enquire what that example might REALLY be? If you have taken the time to genuinely do that, is it translating across your brand? What if discovering and living your brand is a sacred journey? Well stay tuned because our guest on this episode is Jared Angaza is a Identity Architect, author, podcaster, philanthropist, spiritual development coach, and philosopher. Over the past 20 years, he's leveraged the studies of behavioral science, consciousness, philanthropy, creativity, and culture to develop remarkable brands, events, and activism campaigns. Today, he continues to develop socially conscious brands, cultures of innovation, and advancements in technology that enhance the human experience and our relationship with our planet. As a leader and consultant he's on a life-long quest to expand people's perspectives and contribute to a more harmonious world. This is NOT your average everyday Leadership conversations....This episode is an adventure, a heroic journey into leadership at the most soulful level! For example we will speak about:In the wake of what could seem to be a new "war of the sexes" we'll examine the "false masculine” Leadership through the lens of feminine and masculine energy. The importance of imagination and creativity in deliberately designing our identity. Why the sweetest elements of life are as a result of discipline (and that's a gift, not a curse!)We dig into how to find your own sacred and heroic journey. To find out more about Jared: jaredangaza.comTo find out more about hiring the host Dov Baron as a speaker or strategist: http://fullmontyleadership.com/consulting or http://fullmontyleadership.com/speakingRemember you can now also find us on iTunes, Spotify, iHeart Radio, or wherever you tune into podcastsAnd on traditional radio stations across the US every Monday and Thursday on: 99.5 FM & 1520 AM Las Vegas102.1 FM & 1640 AM Lancaster, Philadelphia87.9 FM & 810 AM Macon, Gorgia 92.1 FM & 1630 AM Tampa, Florida97.7 The Villages, Florida96.3 FM Boulder ,Colorado90.3 FM Milwaukee, Wisconsin 94.7 FM Pittsburg, Philadelphia87.9 FM Colorado Springs, ColoradoAlso look for us on ROKU TV where there’s 100K subscribers. Jared and I have deep, engaging conversations, starting from before my appearances on his podcast a year before we recorded this one. You’ll hear we quickly get deep on this one. It follows an earlier conversation a topic that many won't talk about or listen on, but that we consider essential, at least to talk about. We discuss resources per person as our populations grow. Some societies controlled their population for thousands of years in concert with their available resources. I wonder how. What mechanisms did they use, since that duration suggests it wasn't by luck. If you know, please let me know. What challenge will Jordan take on? I think you’ll really enjoy this semi-controversial conversation between the two of us. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Why do we go to therapy? Or a workshop?Or a coach?Or a training? Or a retreat? A core dynamic of these events is accountability. We actually pay for it and sign up for it. And that’s easier to get our heads around if it’s “a professional”. But it’s often hard for us to open ourselves up to accountability from those around us, like friends and family. If I view accountability as nothing more than judgment from others, or unwanted responsibility that makes me uncomfortable, or any other negative perspective, I am rejecting a potentially profound gift or transcendence, and connection, and expansion. I crave accountability. I want that type of community. And I want to also be available to others to keep them accountable in times of need. That’s a humanitarian act I’m happy to engage in. How does accountability feel to you? How do you view it? Do you want it? Do you seek it out? How does the concept affect your perspective? I invite you to share your thoughts in the show notes section of this podcast. I’d love to hear from you. Alright, go out there and get yourself some accountability. It’s a beautiful day to grow and expand!
Overview: In this episode, our friend Jared Angaza joins us on the Think Bold, Be Bold Show! Jared is an independent brand architect, the founder of Third Way, host of the Inipi (ee 'nee pee) Radio podcast, a published author, and a philosopher. His life and work are a constant effort to expand perspectives and foster a more harmonious world. Over the past 20 years, Jared has leveraged the studies of behavioral science, consciousness, philanthropy, creativity, and culture as a Brand Architect and Philanthropist. He continues that journey today as he develops brands, cultures of innovation, and advancements in technology that enhance the human experience and our relationship with our planet. Tune in to hear Jared’s journey and learn a few branding tips along the way! 5 Golden Nuggets Shared: 1. The small things we stress about throughout the day are so minor compared to real-world issues. When you have the opportunity to see the world through another lens, it allows you to have perspective on what really matters. To live a more stress-free and simple life, let the small things go. 2. Always look at the big picture. It’s easy to focus on the race, but it’s important to keep the endgame in mind. Focusing on the big picture will lead you to success. 3. In business and life, people may not remember your words, but they will remember the feeling you left with them. When it comes to your brand, ensure your customers feel the emotions you are portraying and have a pleasant experience. 4. Give something back to society. It doesn’t have to be a monetary value either, give your time, energy, or anything you can sacrifice for the greater good. 5. Take the time to reflect on your life. Ask yourself, what is it for, what is your life really about? Find what impact you want to leave this world with, and make it happen! 3 Bold and Kick-Ass Quotes: 1. “We need bridging techniques to bring people together.“ - Jared Angaza 2. “I help people unearth the essence of who they are.“ - Jared Angaza 3. “We all have influence, no matter what. We are influencing people everywhere we go, good or bad. What are you going to do with that?“ - Jared Angaza Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with Jared! Never Stop Peaking - Motivation for Your Creative Maniac Mind
In 2008, I blindly met Jared Angaza on an airplane traveling towards Texas. He was fresh off extradition by the U.S. from Rwanda where he had been imprisoned daily for 4 months, facing forces of blackmail, corruption, and high-tension accusations. Jared asked me a question on that plane ride, and it planted a seed that would change my life forever. “If you want people to come to you as a coach, if you want them to come to you to buy this product… you have to understand what they’re motivated by, you have to understand the way their mind works.” “Today, a brand is a crafted experience. It is a language that you speak…it is a relationship that hopefully leads to an audience that are going to be your brand ambassadors.” “You don’t have to have a brand to have a successful business….but if you want to create an Apple type of experience, [then you’re going to need a specific and concise message].” “How people do anything is how they do everything.” Jared’s formula for how to find your why: “Imagine that years from now you’re business is wildly successful and the news is interviewing you because you’re such a big success. What are you telling them? What’s happened there? What’s the brand culture like? The family that runs it? The staff that runs it? What do people experience? Are they happy?...What do you want your impact to be?” “Branding, in general, has a lot to do with care. Period.” “If you want to create a great brand, build it in hopes of creating that experience every time for the customer.” “You don’t even get a seat at the table. You have to create attention first…How do [you] get people’s attention, hold it, and then (here’s the clincher) do something good with it?” “People will forget the things that you did. They’ll forget the things that you said. But they’ll always remember the way that you made them feel. Let's dig deep into the subject of Philanthropy today. We've got Jared Angaza with us who is a strategist and philanthropist. There was just something about him and how he's putting himself out into the world that made me want him on the show. I think you'll appreciate his perspective and genuine passion for compassion as much as I do. Jared lived and worked full time in East Africa for over a decade before moving to Costa Rica for the past year and a half. Now he and his family are living in his hometown of Nashville, TN as they prepare to launch a few of their latest philanthropic ventures. For 20 years Jared has created strategies, brands, campaigns, events and teachings that help us re-imagine philanthropy and transform perspectives. Jared coaches and consults for individuals, brands and governments across the globe and is on a quest to contribute to a more harmonious world. In today's conversation he and I discuss some of the bravery he's witnessed and been a part of first and second hand in the realm of advocacy and philanthropy. He also shares with us 3 Pillars of Philanthropy, all of which we can accomplish without having to leave our hometown by the way. And we also discuss how important it is to learn how to observe the pain around us. I'm really grateful that I get to share conversations like this with you, especially today. Our world needs more of this kind of bravery and I'm so pleased Jared joined us to talk about it all. Brave Take-Aways Such a wonderful selection of topics. I really hoped you enjoyed that as much as I did. As with every interview episode on Bare Naked Bravery, today you've got a Brave Take-Away, something you can do today to implement some of the things we discussed from today's show... Today's Brave Take-Away is to do 3 things based around Jared's 3 pillars of philanthropy. - Do one thing that eases pain for yourself or others. - Do one thing to observe pain within yourself or others. - Do one thing which addresses the root cause of the pain of yourself or others. They don't have to be big, audacious acts - just small steps in the right direction. Maybe it's giving yourself permission to take a bubble bath. Maybe it's having a conversation and listening to someone's pain. Maybe it's getting dirty and crossing something off the "honey-do" list for your spouse. Again, just simple small acts of brave philanthropy. I know Jared would love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. Thoughts on Breathing Yes, [breathing has been part of my mindfulness] probably most over the last year. I had this chant going on in my head, I don't really know where it came from. It was, 'find your breath'. It was coupled with this other mantra which I deliberately put together of, 'In this stillness, I am'. So 'in the stillness I am also able to find my breath and to become more still. Right now I'm practicing counting my breaths as I'm meditating which has helped a lot. Today on the podcast we have Jared Angaza joining us. Jared and I was introduced a few weeks ago and since then, I have to say, he is somebody I would consider a friend. We just hit it off right off the bat and I think when you hear this episode you'll know why. Jared is a strategist and a philanthropist, and has created strategies, brands, and campaigns and events for 20 years. The thing that is super cool about Jared is that he really believes in creating brands with soul. He feels strongly that there should be something called “conscious philanthropy” and “brand alchemy” present within every brand. He definitely takes this idea of brand and how to imagine the possibilities of identity and experience to a totally different level. Jared is also the coauthor of the book, Wisdom Meets Passion, that he wrote with his father and bestselling author, Dan Miller. Overall, Jared is super creative, he is a very interesting guy, who has traveled the world and I just loved talking to him. We have a mutual passion for authenticity, so we had a great discussion. Definitely have a listen, and let me know what you think.
Everyday, we can't avoid reading articles that tout the latest and greatest technology and innovation. What we don't see that often is the role innovation can and should play in philanthropy. If you agree that it has a role, how do you bring innovation to philanthropy? This weeks guest, Jared Angaza, has spent his life […]
Most entrepreneurs want to help people with their business, but today's guest takes that to an extreme. Jared Angaza is a strategist, philanthropist, and founder who has built his success on helping others succeed. Especially people most entrepreneurs don't think they can help. That's why Jared has spent about a decade of his career building businesses in African nations like Kenya and Rwanda. His social entrepreneurship efforts have helped free 49 Rwandan women from the clutches of sex slavery by teaching them an entrepreneurial path forward. You can't donate dignity, but you can give a path so downtrodden people can experience it for themselves. As cool as Jared's stories are, one really stands out to me. In this episode, he tells me about how he walked with wild lions on the African savanna. And they didn't even eat him! In this episode, you'll also hear story after story about how Jared, through social entrepreneurship, affected the people of Africa and how they in turn affected him. Invest in your perspective because you know it's going to change the way you view the world. Too much social entrepreneurship, Jared says, is about putting out fires instead of changing perspectives. If you want to do more for people through your business, this episode is for you. Or if you like to hear about best practices for social entrepreneurship, get listening. And if you just want to hear some crazy stories about living in Africa for a decade, click play in the player above to get started.
