MOBO is a single myofascial release tool designed and created by Dr. Christie Powell. Her inventor story is different than the ones we have heard previously. MOBO is only offered in blue…why blue? I have scaled back the company and product offering We got a huge verbal order before COVID that wanted blue. Happy accident since we had to order 10,000 units How did you get started? As a smaller person performing myofascial release on large D1 athletes. I kept having to McGyver things together to teach the patients how to do the work at home. At a huge CrossFit event, the contestants all had 10+ devices and that was a huge inspiration. I wanted one device that could replace most of those. I reached out to an engineering friend and we worked together. You mentioned getting funding for MOBO…can you share? It is so complicated, I am a PT and I just want something for my patients. We had to create CAD drawings Film videos Pay someone to listen to your idea The very first prototype was $1000 to produce. We connected with a producer that worked out in our gym and he was our first funder. $10,000 seemed like so much but that went through really quickly He hooked us up with the filming studio. We launched a Kickstarter to produce about 1000 units. All my friends were product models and my gym was always the setting for photo shoots. We did a “Meet and Greet” and the people donated about $20,000 which allowed us to make our first order. We had trouble sourcing the materials in the US so we had a big process of finding the materials that were responsible. We got another couple hundred thousand dollars from customers.  This was a personal loan-type investment. I had to bring on some business partners and there was much more stress. So much time lapsed between a problem and a solution because they were being made overseas. The last round of funding happened right at COVID.  We had put in all the work and fine-tuned the process. We took away all of the moving parts to limit the possible breakages. We simplified the tool, but of course, that costs money and time. We got 1.5 million dollars from one investor and that was in January 2020…right before COVID. We now have to spend all this time filming and creating a website and an online shop. Discuss the MOBO licensing deal I felt like I was letting my baby leave the house. Our deal was with DICK'S Sporting Goods. We actually shared their manufacturing facility and they felt our tool would help them reach the adventure sports crowd. We had to negotiate so many things to produce the product cheaper. We knew there were certain areas we could not compromise on certain components. What would you do differently if you were starting over? Everything got me to where I am now with the product and company. I could not have done this by myself.  Surrounding myself with the best possible fit and people that have the same values. I allowed anyone who showed interest to help instead of vetting them and picking the “right” person What do you see going forward? I am going to lots of places to do a demo for a running group and a yoga studio. I am excited we are expanding and blowing up. On this episode of Huntavore, Nick is joined by The Intrepid Eater, Adam Berkelmans.  Adam is a self taught cook who has a passion for wildgame, growing and foraging, and making amazing dishes out of both.  Together, these guys chat about some deep topics related to self-sustainability, responsible meat-eating, and finish up on a fun way to serve wild game, in sushi rolls.  All this and more on the next episode of Huntavore.Adam Berkelmans hails from Ontario, Canada.  He took his passion of hunting, fishing, and foraging and mixed it with love of cooking.  Taking on the title of Intrepid Eater, Adam shares that with a little creativity, some self taught practice, and an adventurous spirit, wild game can be just about any dish that you desire.Adam leads the discussion on an idea of responsible meat-eating. The thought is, if you only eat the most desirable cuts without the rest of the animal, then the waste and discarded parts would surpass what is taken.  Head to tail eating of animals, not only provides a wealth of nutrients, but also stretches the use of that animal.  Both Nick and Adam agree that if we are going to spread this idea, it has to be done by sharing recipes, encouraging others to try new things, wagging a finger and telling someone to keep their livers without first creating motivation would be not good.On a lighter note, Nick asks about wildgame sushi.  Adam has made several variations of what closely resembles Kimbap (Gimbap) , a Korean version of sushi, but with cooked and pickled items, rather than raw, in traditional sushi.  The Crappie and Chips rolls he made was to stretch the use of one fish.  Being notorious for not freezing well, Adam didn't want to freeze the fish, but fried in a tempaura batter, followed up with fried potatoes and rolled it all in sticky medium grain rice and sushi seaweed paper.  No special equipment is needed. They still sell 95 million cans of Play-Doh a year. David Young: 95 million cans of it. Steven Semple: 95 million cans a year. And when there was a bunch of marketing companies got together a while ago and created this list of the most memorable brands in the world and number 24 was Play-Doh. Mark it in your calendar, September 18th is national Play-Doh Day. David Young: Oh, sweet. That's nice. They have their own day. Steven Semple: So when you have your own day, you're kind of a bit of a deal. David Young: Yeah. I mean, it's a foundational toy for most of us, right? We all remember playing with Play-Doh. Steven Semple: And here's the interesting thing, it didn't start as a toy. Didn't start as a toy. So, if we go back to 1920, there's a company called Kutol and it was founded by Cleo McGyver, McGyver, not MacGyver, McGyver, and it was a soap and cleaning product. And basically houses at that time were heated by coal, so there was lots of soot. And what was really popular in that time was wallpaper. Wallpaper was much more popular than painting. So, you basically had a house, it was heated by coal wallpaper on it, lots of soot, and basically, Kutol sold all these products basically to different grocery stores. And what happened is Kroger basically said to them, "Hey, do you have a cleaning product that would clean soot off of wallpaper? Did you have something like that?" And he said, "Sure, I do." And they signed a contract and then he went, "You know, this is really good news because we've been a struggling business about to go bankrupt. We now got this great contract from Kroger." David Young: We just got to figure out... Steven Semple: We don't have a product. So he went to his younger brother, Noah, and he said, "Can you make a product? I got an order. Can you make a product?" So, they created this putty pliable, like substance that you would basically roll on wallpaper and would collect the soot off the wallpaper and had cleaning product in it and whatnot. And it would clean the wallpaper. And the product did gangbusters in the company made tons of money until suddenly the 1950s come along. And you know what happened in the 1950s? Oil and gas, no longer coal. Way cleaner. Soot went way down, also a trend away from wallpaper to painting. But the big thing is, you didn't need this cleaning product. So demand went, boom, like this. So for the second time in the company's history, first time is struggling and they get those order from Kroger and they make this product. They're now a struggling company again, about to go bankrupt. And so basically they hired their nephew, Joseph to join the business.
