Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2023 34:47

In this episode, Sonny Vu, Founder of Alabaster and former founder of Misfit Wearables, and Jeremy Au discuss three main themes: 1. Vietnam & America Roots: Sonny talked about growing up in the Midwest as his older brother's sidekick and a Vietnamese immigrant who spoke Vietnamese to his American friends. He decided to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois, but quickly realized his passion lay elsewhere - and shifted to eventually studying computational linguistics at MIT under Professor Noam Chomsky. He also shared why he felt Noam Chomsky was misunderstood by the broader public. 2. Founding Misfit Wearables ($260M acquisition by Fossil): Sonny's entrepreneurial journey started when he participated in the MIT $50K Business Plan Competition with FireSpout, a startup focused on machine learning-assisted natural language processing (NLP). After selling his first startup, he co-founded other startups including AgaMatrix, an electrochemical biosensor for diabetes management, and Misfit Wearables, a wearable technology company that was eventually acquired by Fossil for $260 million. He discussed how he figured out product-market fit by reading 5,000 reviews of competitors' wearables and emphasized the importance of timing and market needs. He also stressed the importance of assembling a crew that's deeply committed to the mission beyond personal gain and celebrates the rare and precious servant leaders who prioritize the team and the mission over themselves. 3. Navigating Tough Decisions: Sonny shared a story of physical bravery while hiking in Turkey, as well as a critical business decision during his second company's near bankruptcy, where ethical considerations led him to reject a term sheet that would have been detrimental to previous investors. He asserted that true bravery and courage emerge not from the absence of fear but from facing and navigating through it despite potential risks. The key is considering the long-term perspective of self-perception and integrity. Jeremy and Sonny also talked about how the disciplines of art, math, and languages and are a unified pursuit of beauty, the evolving nature of entrepreneurship, failure as a more potent teacher than success, the importance of sales in startups, and the value of continuous learning. Sonny Vu is here to talk about his exit from Misfit Wearables to Fossil back in 2012. It was an acquisition that came about because Sonny was searching for brands to do collaborations with. When several of the brands that Sonny wanted to work with happened to be under the umbrella of Fossil, talks of an exit became reality. Today, he serves as CEO of AREVO and Executive Chairman of Impact Biosystems. In between, he's had a lot of growth and success that he'll share with listeners. From a budding entrepreneur at age 12, Sonny knows what it means to build from the ground up. A Young Entrepreneur When Sonny was just 12 years old, he landed a job selling fireworks. He sold more than anyone else because he was really into the product, and he knew his stuff. From there he was off running. He invested in many companies, but Misfits is his most notable. He and his wife built it from the ground up from their apartment. They were lucky they got on board when they did, as the wearables trend was just starting to happen. Searching For Possible Collaborations Sonny always knew who to target, and he watched certain brands like a hawk. Watching the Apple Watch and asking himself why people bought it, Sonny found that deep down it was about fashion. After doing collaborations with such companies as Victoria's Secret, Sonny began to consider who else they could approach. Reaching out to people like Kate Spade and Armani, he found that most of these people were in the Fossil group. Sonny ended up getting a call from Fossil directly because they had heard Misfits was interested in fashion. It was a very natural conversation, and Sonny discovered he would love to work with all of their brands. That's when everyone came to the realization it may make more sense just to merge. Open To An Exit, But Not Dependent On It The goal from the beginning was to build the company to be sustainable and stand alone. Sonny didn't want to rely on needing to make an exit. However, he wasn't opposed to an exit either. Fossil made them an offer, mostly up front cash with incentives to stick around for a while. Sonny says at the time of the acquisition, they had 240 employees, with about 200 of them overseas in China and Vietnam. All the plumbing of the company happened there. By doing this, they were able to keep costs down and speed up. When The Timing Proves Perfect The timing proved to be perfect when Sonny saw that another company that had twice their revenue was acquired at ⅔ the price just six months later. Also, at the time, the new Apple Watch was getting ready to be announced, and Sonny knew he needed to get out ahead of that. From the time of the first emails to money in the bank was about 6 months. Sonny did end up staying on board with Fossil for a while because he wanted to see it through and work with an incredible company. He ended up working on collaborations with 14 of Fossil's brands in his time there. What Sonny Is Working On Now After his Misfits exit, Sonny began running a small, family office where they invest in deep tech companies, mostly in climate change. Lately, they've been promoting a lot of plant-based meats. He also serves as the executive chairman at Impact Biosystems, where they've recently built a smart massager called Pact. It's a full feedback smart massage system with muscle scanning technology. To learn more about this product, visit www.thepact.com. For this episode of our podcast, I interviewed Sridhar Iyengar, Founder and CEO of Elemental Machines. Very few entrepreneurs in the Boston tech scene have had the same level of success as Sridhar. As a co-founder of three different companies in the medical device and wearables industry, the products that he's helped bring to market are incredibly innovative. Take AgGaMatrix, a glucose monitoring company that built the world's first medical device that connected directly to the iPhone. Or, Misfit, the makers of elegant wearable products that was started along with Sridhar's longtime collaborator Sonny Vu and also, John Sculley—yes, that John Sculley—the one that was the CEO at Apple. Misfit ended up getting acquired by Fossil for a reported $260M. At Elemental Machines, the company is modernizing the lab and helping to accelerate science with its IoT and data science platform. The company has raised over $11.5M in funding. In this episode of our podcast, we cover lots of topics, like: -How to give constructive feedback to your co-founder. -Sridhar's early background and a deep dive into AgaMatrix and Misfit, including the story of how John Sculley got involved. -What led him to start Elemental Machines and all the details on the company. -Whether he thinks equity should be equal between co-founders. -Advice for founders on managing cash and raising capital. -Plus, a lot more. We are getting very close to episode 100 of The VentureFizz Podcast! Can you believe it? So, I need your help. Who is the #1 person that you would want interviewed for the 100th episode? Sridhar Iyengar has been around the innovation block. Several times. With his business partner Sonny Vu, he created the diabetes-care company AgaMatrix, then Misfit wearables, and now he's the CEO and Founder of Elemental Machines. In a wide-ranging conversation with Continuum SVP Kevin Young, Iygengar's intelligence shines through, illuminating the worlds of medical devices, consumer health, and tech entrepreneurialism. Among the many wise words of this podcast, you'll hear these: · “We did predictive analytics before the phrase was sexy.” · “What we thought with Misfit is—let's do something in health and wellness, where we can iterate really quickly without having the regulatory burden. And once we understand the UI and the user experience, we can then put a quality system together and then move that into medical.” · “We had to design the product in such a way that the Apple decision-maker would fall in love with. So, of course, we mimicked the Apple design language. We actually got a very nice compliment by one of the folks there saying, ‘Wow, this looks like something we would've designed.'” · “Quite simply, our market research involved one intern sitting in front of a laptop for two weeks, and reading every negative review on Amazon for the competing products. We told her: just tell us what the top three complaints are.” · “There's no de-bugger for physical processes—and that's kinda what we're doing at Elemental Machines.” · “As somebody runs that assembly line over and over and over again, our system learns where the critical variables are, and then alerts them and basically guides our customers to say: ‘OK, step number 14—the variability there is what's causing quality problems in your product.'” · “One of the best ways to spot an opportunity is to solve a problem that you've had yourself.” · “Solving an existing problem is generally not as exciting as working on a new technology. But if you solve an existing problem, it gets a foot in the door, you can build a business, and then you can start investing in the new sexy exiting things that are swirling around.” Host: Pete Chapin Editor: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

The desire to create a piece of innovative technology that dominates the market has fueled founders for a long time. When Sonny Vu and his partners created Misfit, they wanted to go a step beyond that. They wanted to create technology that was innovative because it truly served people in meaningful ways, rather than the other way around. In his mind, it had to be something people actually wanted to wear, something they enjoyed using. This conversation tells how Sonny was born in Vietnam, raised in the home of immigrants, and began starting companies of his own when he was in his early 20s. It’s not the road most commonly traveled, but it’s one that has brought Sonny a lot of personal and professional fulfillment. You’ll be inspired by his story and empowered by his lessons-learned from founding, scaling, and selling a very successful and innovative technology company, Misfit. Wearable technology needs to serve us and be something we want to use In Sonny’s opinion, most of the wearable technology that comes to market seems to have been designed by brilliant engineers, for people who have the IQ of a brilliant engineer. There doesn't seem to be thought given to the end-user and what would make the tech something they would not only find useful but also enjoy using. The goal in starting Misfit was to bring a product to market that accomplished both of those things. As part of the product research phase, Sonny read thousands of Amazon reviews for wearable tech purchases. His suspicions were confirmed: Most purchasers expressed frustration and didn’t actually enjoy using what they had purchased. The Misfit road to success is one that has changed that story. Elegant, useful products created with the end-user in mind. Listen as Sonny explains. Wisdom, judgment, culture: Areas where new team members MUST fit your company One of the hardest things to get right in any company is hiring. It’s almost impossible to discern character, wisdom, and cultural fit in a handful of interviews. So how do you do it? Sonny says it’s not an exact science but you can get better at it. He’s learned to focus on three things: wisdom, judgment, and culture. He does everything he can to get a clear view of those because they are the character traits that will have the biggest impact on the team, both positively and negatively. He prefers to work alongside people before he hires them. He watches how they interact with others, their body language, and pays attention to the degree of insight they demonstrate during the project. Are there ways you can apply this “lean startup-like” approach to finding and hiring the right people for your team? New hires require micromanagement until they earn autonomy When I asked Sonny how he goes about bringing a new hire onto his team, he expressed a desire to get them to a state of independence and autonomy as soon as possible. But that doesn’t mean he throws them into that level of freedom right away. He actually does the opposite. He believes it’s prudent to micromanage new hires for a season because autonomy is something that has to be earned. As a new hire proves their ability, capacity, and judgment they are allowed more freedom. How would this approach work in your organization? Technology that is incredibly useful and extremely affordable is the best innovation I always like to hear who has influenced my guests in significant ways. For Sonny, one of those people was Steve Jobs. He had the opportunity to spend 5 to 10 minutes with Steve once and received a great deal of insight from the famed Apple founder in that compressed encounter. Steve asked him about what he was working on and inquired what the most innovative thing he could do might be. During the conversation Steve said that the best innovations are the ones that are incredibly useful to many people yet very affordable, so the masses can benefit from it just as much as those with greater resources. Sonny loves that mindset and wants it to characterize the way he develops tech solutions. He hopes to one day be part of a project that makes life better for the “bottom billion” - those who are the poorest of the poor across the globe.
