Welcome back to the Ready Set BBQ podcast, your go-to destination for the latest and most exciting happenings around the world! In this episode, we talk Texas football or Eagles & Niners, Taylor Swift, new cookoff season, Elon Musk, Mark Cuban, and Xmas gifts .  0 mins We are back and Jaime, Hiram join me as we talk about the Texas Longhorns making the college football playoffs.  Some teams were left out and therefore disappointed but what matters most is that our team made it.  Hey we've been on the other side before. We talk about the Niners and Eagles as Hiram takes a victory lap.  I was more interested in the suspension of Big Dom, the Eagles head of security.  We give a shoutout to our buddy Nick and podcast contributor for winning World Flag football championship.  20:00 mins BBQ Time - We talk about our most recent cookoff as we didn't quite do as well as the last time but still managed to get a top 5 overall call.  I talk about how I just don't get how judges can differ from one week to the next but that's the name of the game.  I talk about our upcoming cookoff in January 2024 and tell the guys that the Spazmatics will be headlining the musical performance.  We prepare the audience for another appearance of Captain Mike on the season finale and hopefully he cooks us up some good eats.    30:00 I give the guys a choice to talk about Elon Musk or Mark Cuban.  Apparently they still aren't interested in having multiple topics but at the same time won't ever come up with any of their own.  Elon Musk would have a nice response for them.  While Mark Cuban want to build a mega casino in Dallas.  We close it out by talking about what to take to a white elephant party.  We also talk about buying a xmas gift for someone you just started dating.  Tune in next time for our season 5 finale. A bunch of joes that cook like pros!!!Palmer Drug Abuse Program - McAllenPalmer Drug Abuse Program (pdapmcallen.org)Websitehttps://www.readysetbbq.com/Facebook Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/readysetbbqElda's KitchenHome - Elda's Kitchen (eldaskitchen.com)Melissa Bankard Farmers Insurancehttps://agents.farmers.com/tx/richardson/melissa-bankardWebsite/Shop https://www.readysetbbq.com/Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/readysetbbqElda's Kitchen Home - Elda's Kitchen (eldaskitchen.com)Melissa Bankard Farmers Insurancehttps://agents.farmers.com/tx/richardson/melissa-bankard

I had a chance to chat with Niki Austin from 3 Sheets Events today.  She brought by some of the food creations as well as some microbrews and wines you'll see at the first Annual Backlot Wine & Beer Weekend.  The event happens May 20 and 21 in the lot between 3 Daughters Brewing and the Old Train Station in St. Pete. The weekend raises funds for two important local non-profits: Hero to a Child which advocates for children of abuse and neglect as well as Operation Craft Beer Deployment which is a new foundation with a mission to provide craft beer to our soldiers and provide them with a taste of home.  There are two nights... with totally different vibes. Friday 6-9pm, May 20 is Wine & Jazz night. Guests may sample up to 50 wines in a sip and stroll atmosphere with live music by Hot Tonic in a night market setting with over 25 arts and craft vendors. VIP entrants can enjoy special pours in the tent sponsored by Bogle Winery along with a special catered menu. Saturday 1-4pm, May 21st is Beerfest  (Q105 will be there)with live music by local favorite, the Spazmatics. With sampling cups provided by Visit St Pete Clearwater, guests can sample over 100 craft brews. VIP guests will enjoy a beer-inspired menu (attached) from Toasted Associates along with unique local craft brews along with a special visit from Horse Soldier Bourbon. Breweries featured include Sea Dog, Bayboro, 3 Daughters, Cigar City, Motorworks and more. Many have made special and rare donations that will be up auction at the event including a Keys Weekend Giveaway Islamora Brewing.

Before he was the front man, bandleader and namesake of a Los Angeles-based project on the Merge Records roster, Mike Krol was a Wauwatosa teen who loved ska. Recently, while in Milwaukee to play a homecoming show in support of his latest/greatest album, Power Chords, Krol met up with My First Band host Tyler Maas to talk about his very early musical endeavors. In a studio space that was kindly offered to them by WMSE, Krol openly talked about his "checkered past" in suburban ska projects like Spazmatics and The Reactants, recording a demo at UW-Oshkosh, playing shows in churches, his short-lived Saved By The Bell tribute band called The Lark Voorhies, and the impetus of his solo venture (which he almost named "World Denominators"). Before setting out on the European leg of the Power Chords tour, Krol also sent us a few Reactants songs to play at the end of the episode, including a never-before-heard demo about his high school teacher's hairstyle. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and PrideFest Milwaukee. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and The Reactants ("Mrs. Ward" and "Screw You").

Show Notes: https://justinfimlaid.com/1-thing-i've-learned-about-successful-security-leaders/ Sponsor: https://www.nuharborsecurity.com Contact Me: https://justinfimlaid.com/contact-me/ Twitter: @justinfimlaid LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jfimlaid/ I traveled to 7 cities this week.  It was a little intense to say the least.  Luckily I had some awesome company with me which made the trip a little easier. While in Austin I was listening to the cover band the Spazmatics and I was talking to a friend about the Pwned Podcast.  We were kicking around ideas for content, so out of Austin Texas, this weeks question - what is single commonality I see amongst successful security leaders. One commonality I see among successful security leaders. It's their ability to build relationships within a security organization.  They are able to get their peers and other folks in the organization to pick up the security gauntlet to enable the security program.  They are also able to get their organizational cohorts to self select the correct security decisions when no one else is looking.  I was pretty fortunate early in my career that someone much smarter than me taught me about the "Not invented here" stance by many people.  The idea of Not Invented Here is someone's general resistance to an idea because it wasn't their own, and they no matter what believe their ideas are better.  From Wikipedia "The reasons for not wanting to use the work of others are varied, but some can include a desire to support a local economy instead of paying royalties to a foreign license-holder, fear of patent infringement, lack of understanding of the foreign work, an unwillingness to acknowledge or value the work of others, jealousy, or forming part of a wider turf war. As a social phenomenon, this philosophy can manifest as an unwillingness to adopt an idea or product because it originates from [somewhere else]." From What I learned from this is sometimes arguing with someone who has this not invented here stance matters less because it's while you may win the argument now, that same person will try to prove in the long term while you were wrong and look to sabotage, perhaps indirectly, your success. I digress a little bit, but my point is that successful relationship builders can see the bigger picture don't get meyered down in petty arguments of singular facts.  Rather concensus, and doing things together as a team, is the most important thing. As I look back over my career, I can clearly connect some realtionship dots.  One thing I always did was take care of the vendors who took the time to visit me.  See when I was a CISO, I lived in northern VT, and get anyone to leave Boston to make a 3 hour drive was amazing.  Now, I wasn't always a buyer, but One thing I would always do is make it worth their drive by taking them out to dinner, spending time with people, learning about their personal life.  Nothing lasts forever - and when I left my job, it was those vendor realtionships that helped me start NuHarbor Security. Now I'm on the Vendor side, I realized the Vendor community is a WAY WAY bigger network than security professionals who perform security within a company.  The vendor network is big and they talk to everyone.  They're an amazing network to draw on if you ever needed help.  I often see security professionals treat the vendor community fairly harsh, and vise versa.  But really, we're all fighting the same battle and we have a lot of commonalities.  If we accept that we're better together. So my answer this week to what is a single commonality I see amongst successful security leaders.  It's their ability to build long-term relationships with internal cohorts as well as develop external partnerships with outside organizations.  These are the individuals I see excel in the their carrer.

We always say, "Always Be Performing", but what does that mean to you? Are you actively performing? Are you thinking about what to do to perform? Or are you just letting it happen naturally? Is naturally good enough for you and your crowd? And are you the kind of musician for whom "good enough" would suffice in any other aspect of what you're doing on stage? Paul and Dave spend some time today talking through what it means to be a performer and begin answering some of these questions... or at least begin asking them in a way that will make you think.
