We're celebrating the 50th anniversary of TAS' second season with guest Aaron Harvey, author of "Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series." In many ways, TAS broke new ground by expanding on what had come from TOS and making the Trek universe a richer place. For the first time, Orion pirates were seen, and they, along with many other TAS creations, have left an indelible mark on the franchise ever since. Dive into the roots of felinoid species, what makes "canon" and more on this week's episode of The Trek Files. THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY of the debut of The Animated Series more or less coincides with Trek Marry Kill's 1ST ANNIVERSARY, and so to celebrate both, Bryan has decided to remove this podcast's original sin of holding the animated shows off to the side by fully embracing them with the first of what will be monthly special episodes dedicated to animated episodes. Joining him for the first special episode is Laurie Ulster of TrekMovie.com, who hosts the All Access Podcast on that network. She also copy edited Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series, an awesome reference guide for this Emmy-nominated Saturday morning cartoon that's not "just" a cartoon -- it's animated Star Trek! This month, the first two episodes of the series. One written by the same guy who wrote the first episode of The Original Series and the other written by D.C. Fontana, perhaps the second-most important writer in franchise history after Gene Roddenberry. Hear about Bryan's chance encounter with her back in 2016. The grades begin at (22:15). "Yesteryear" discussion begins at (48:23). This episode features some old promos for which you can see here on YouTube. One of those promos is an old "Keep America Beautiful" PSA. Our theme is "70's Synth Funk Jam" by Phill_Dillow on Pixabay. We also use a snippet from Luis Humanoide from Pixabay's "Space Fleet" during our bridge. If you're liking the show, consider rating us five stars on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.
Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock are summoned by the Vedalans, the oldest known spacefaring race, to recover a stolen religious artifact called the Soul of Skarr, the theft of which must be kept secret in order to prevent a holy war from enveloping the galaxy. In order to carry out their mission across a volatile and dangerous planetary terrain, Kirk and Spock are teamed with members of other alien races that are experts in their field, but soon after the expedition gets under way, they begin to suspect that there is a traitor in their midst. Written by Stephen Kandell — who wrote “Mudd's Women” and “I, Mudd” for “The Original Series,” as well as “Mudd's Passion” for “The Animated Series” — “The Jihad” is an entertaining and exciting adventure that plays to the many strengths that fully defined the very best of “Star Trek," and it brought the first season of “The Animated Series” to an effective and satisfying close. Welcome back aboard the continuing voyages of "Enterprise Incidents," which officially gets under way with our preview of "Star Trek: The Animated Series." We're excited to be joined for this very special podcast episode by Aaron Harvey and Rich Schepis, authors of the detailed and lavishly-illustrated book "Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series." Among the many questions that we'll have answered: What were the events that led to the creation of "The Animated Series?" How did the syndication of "The Original Series" and the very first "Star Trek" conventions play a part in that? How did most of the original cast members sign on to reprise their iconic roles? Which producers and writers from "The Original Series" also came back for "The Animated Series?" How did "The Animated Series" grease the rails for "The Motion Picture" and, basically, every other "Star Trek" series that followed? And perhaps the biggest and most loaded question of all: Is "The Animated Series" officially considered part of "Star Trek" canon (and should it be)? Since the early 1970s were such a crucial time period that set the stage for the continued existence and evolution of "Star Trek," this is one episode of "Enterprise Incidents" you won't want to miss! Grab your bat'leths and prepare for an amazing quest, adventurers! During their downtime, General Martok returns (kind of) to lead our Lower Deck crew on glorious quests and missions. When on duty, Boimler decides he is going to change his ways and be more assertive, and that quickly puts him in danger with an alien who has targeted him as prey! Meanwhile, Mariner is at odds with Ransom (again) during an away mission when he assigns the engineers to negotiate with the Dulainians while he and Mariner try and fix the big space elevator. This assignment swap, as you can imagine, doesn't go...well! Dan, Sara and Kasey expose their navels and break down the second episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 - The Least Dangerous Game! This week on Star Trek: Lower Decks, it looks like Captain Freeman is leaving the Cerritos for bigger and better things! But before that happens she has to help her old friend Captain Sonya "Hot Chocolate" Gomez when her ship, the USS Archimedes loses all power and hurtles towards a nearby planet! Meanwhile, Rutherford is having implant problems. Seems he has been storing his memories of Tendi in case he suffers memory loss again and its causing issues with performing his duties! And when the Cerritos has to literally strip down to help Captain Gomez, the rest of the Lower Deck crew will stop at nothing to get the job done, even if it means....drowning?? In space??? Bill, Dan, Sara and Kasey break down the amazing season finale - and surprise season ending cliffhanger of Star Trek: Lower Decks - First First Contact! Join us for some great fun and discussion! This week on Star Trek: Lower Decks, did you ever wonder what life as a Lower Decker was like on other alien starships? Well wonder no more friends, as this week we get to see life below decks on a Klingon ship, a Vulcan ship and even a Pakled ship! Logic isn't always the only option for Vulcans but battles to the death seem to be for the Klingons! And as for the Pakleds, yeah they are still dumb. Meanwhile on the Cerritos, Boimler is trying REALLY hard to fit in and find a 'bridge buddy' to hang out with. Will bending the truth about where he is from work with Commander Ransom? This week on Star Trek: Lower Decks, a Starfleet Drill Instructor with ulterior motives arrives on the Cerritos to test the crew. The Lower Deckers and the senior staff switch roles and as one might expect, things don't go as they all hoped. This week on Star Trek: Lower Decks, while Tendi creates a new genetically altered pet named "The Dog", Boimler helps Rutherford with a new transporter project and things don't go as smoothly as planned. Meanwhile, Captain Freeman, Shax and Ransom are away on a super important secret mission (not really) and an old friend of Mariners takes temporary command of the Cerritos. Her first order of business? Make Mariner First Officer while they help a planet in need and investigate why the U.S.S. Rubidoux is adrift in space! Aaron Harvey: The Official Guide to the Animated Series. An often-overlooked corner of the Star Trek universe, the animated Star Trek series of 1973-'74 was the first time Trek would make a comeback. Utilizing most of the original voice talent, TAS approached storytelling in much the same way as its predecessor. A comprehensive guide to this groundbreaking series has never been made available... until now! In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by Aaron Harvey, Trek.fm host and co-author of Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series. We discuss his passion for the animated adventures of Star Trek, how he and co-author Rich Schepis got the job of creating this guide, the process of putting the book together, the layout of the book, some interesting surprises that were revealed about the series, and wrap up by talking about where Aaron can be found online. In the news section, we talk about the release of issue #1 of Star Trek: Discovery: Aftermath from IDW, get a sneak peek of Dayton Ward's upcoming Kirk Fu manual, and judge the cover of the upcoming novel Star Trek: Discovery: Dead Endless by Dave Galanter. We also respond to your Babel Conference feedback for Literary Treks 280: The Rigellians are Psycho. When Star Trek was cancelled in 1969, and before the motion picture premiered in 1979, the cast got together and made two seasons of shows for Saturday morning television. Jeff talks to Aaron Harvey and Rich Schepis, the authors of Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series. It is a beautiful coffee table book in full color, and their insight delivers a fascinating discussion.
Keith DeCandido: Articles of the Federation. In Star Trek, we are used to seeing mighty Federation starships exploring space and boldly going where no one has gone before. However, there is more to Federation society in the 24th century than the men and women of Starfleet: newly-elected Federation President Nan Bacco finds herself embroiled in one crisis after another as she and her administration deal with the fallout from the Tezwa affair and the surprise resignation of her predecessor. The first year of her tenure as president will be her trial by fire, and marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the United Federation of Planets. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther welcome author Keith DeCandido back to the show to discuss his landmark novel, Articles of the Federation. We talk about The West Wing of the 24th century, linking this novel to the other novels in the literary universe, the huge cast of characters, various issues that the Bacco administration has to deal with, answer some questions listeners posted in The Babel Conference, and wrap up with what Keith is working on now and where you can find him online. In the news segment, we announce the upcoming Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series co-written by Trek.fm's very own Aaron Harvey, and report on the tragic loss of a Star Trek literary legend, author Vonda McIntyre.
