Ever wanted to see TNG turn into a mindless action franchise? Yeah, neither did we, but here we are anyway. It's “Star Trek: Nemesis” on this very special episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast, and it's coming at you right about . . . NOW!The final frontier is reached at last as we enjoy this final “Next Generation” motion picture extravaganza! In an unexpected maneuver, the newly ascended praetor of the Romulan Empire requests a visit from the Enterprise E! Picard hightails it to the Romulan homeworld without the common courtesy of dropping off the newlywed Troi and Riker. What could be so pressing as to lead our classy captain to commit such a faux pas?  How about a coup that places the mysterious Shinzon in the role of predator of the empire backed by his equally mysterious Reman “brothers”? (Are there any female Remans? If so, where are they?) The command crew beams down to Shinzon's goth palace for a chat, and as a welcome gift, Shinzon offers some of his blood. Sounds gross until Bev analyzes the blood to discover that Shinzon is a clone of Jean-Luc! (Which is still gross, but at least there's a point to it, kinda.)Meanwhile, the Enterprise just happens to stumble onto yet another Soong-type android scattered across a desert planet. Picard drags Worf and Data on a dune buggy ride to retrieve the bits and reassemble them into an android that looks just like Data. They deduce it's a prototype that just happens to be named . . . B-4. Seriously. That's its name. It has the brain of a Pakled and a jumpsuit to match. Seems they don't make clones the way they used to. But things kick into gear when Shinzon begins to implement his master plan involving the deadly Thalaron radiation! How is B-4 linked to Shinzon and his master plan? What is his master plan anyway? Why does he need Picard's blood so badly? Why is his suit so tight? (that has to chafe!)  Do they not have dentists on Romulus? Found out in this all new episode of ST:TNGeez, Not Another Star Trek Podcast!Even more available at: https://tngeez.com

This week we find the Enterprise missing two crew members. Captain Picard and acting Ensign Crusher make there way to Starbase 515, Wesley for his Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam and Captain Picard for a medical procedure that Dr Pulaski ensures him he's put off for too long. Wesley, not looking forward to spending several long hours alone with the Captain, is nervous and awkward while Captain Picard (who simply wants to read his book) is equally awkward and somewhat irritated. Meanwhile, back on the ship, the crew responds to a distress call from a ship crewed by the Pakleds, a not particularly intelligent race of beings. The Pakleds are in over there heads with their vessel which contains technology from various species none of which the Pakleds know how to operate. The Enterprises crew's efforts to help lead in a kidnapping and mind games which leave them all shaken and Captain Picard on the verge of death. Will Wesley and Picard make it to the Starbase without embarrassment? Can Geordi repair the damaged Pakled ship? Is Captain Picard tired of Dr. Pulaski? What is the deadly Crimson force field? All these questions are more will be answered in this week episode of Hailing Frequencies Open.

The Cerritos Lower Deckers are back!  ...but they are also grounded on Earth while Star Fleet looks into the accusations that Captain Freeman blew up the capital city of Pakled planet. So... it's not great.    Nonetheless, the Lower Deckers are making the most of it. Rutherford and Tendi are making the most of it, seeing the sites on earth. Boimler is working hard at his family's *raisin* vineyard.    And Mariner... well, Mariner, believing Star Fleet is looking for someone to take the fall for the Packled planet incident, is not supremely confident the trial will go well for her mother. Frustrated with the advice from her father to trust in the system, she enlists the rest of the LDers on a desperate (and very much unsanctioned) mission to clear her mother's name.   It goes... well.   Links mentioned in today's episode:   Our website for all things Set Phasers: http://www.setphasers.com    Star Trek Day portals: https://vrscout.com/news/star-trek-day-2022-will-feature-ar-delta-portals/   Lower Decks T-shirts: https://www.startrek.com/gallery/star-trek-lower-decks-t-shirt-collective-season-3/star-trek-lower-decks-t-shirt-collective-week-1-4503/3    Wrath of Khan 40th anniversary screening: https://www.fathomevents.com/events/Star-Trek-II-The-Wrath-of-Khan-40th-Anniversary-presented-by-TCM

He wonders if life is as dull on lower decks of other ships.   Well, we get a look at life on the lower decks of other ships: Klingon, Vulcan, Pakled... And also, something strange is afoot. Strange energy readings! Perhaps a convergence of these disparate groups is in the offing?   Or maybe it's just a casual day off of pottery making and free-climbing and mother-daughter target practice. There is, indeed, a spy humongous on the USS Cerritos. Capt. Freeman and Shaxs have gone down to the Pakled planet (which they called "Pakled Planet") to try and negotiate a peace. But then a "prisoner" from the planet "escapes" to the Cerritos and asks for "asylum" – and also schematics for the ships defensive capabilities.   Meanwhile, Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford are on Anomaly Consolidation Duty. Basically, they are collecting dangerous science trash that senior staff has collected on away missions. The results are... messy.   Also meanwhile, Rutherford gets recruited into "The Red Shirts," and club of enterprising young officers who see to help each other get promoted through the ranks. If it seems like a cult, or just a bad idea, it is.   So, you know, the usual.

Season Finale?!?!  ALREADY?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... ok. So, Boimler let's slip that Mariner is the daughter of Captain Freeman. Everyone starts coming to Mariner to curry favor and so she considered applying for a promotion to the USS Sacramento – the same one Boimler is gunning for. That would be drama enough, but then a group of extremely advanced Pakled's destroys a federation ship and takes a crack at the Cerritos. With the ship disabled, the captain injured, and imminent destruction hanging over their heads – Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi each have a part to play in getting out of a deadly situation. This week on Episode 503 of Priority One: We Trek Out some of the big announcements from First Contact Day, with teasers for new seasons of Discovery, Picard and Lower Decks, while Prodigy asks, “Please state the nature of the coffee emergency,” Oberth April Fools perhaps in Star Trek Online, a new study into the nature of lootboxes, and a quick look at Star Trek: Legends! This week’s Community Questions are: CQ: With all the new Star Trek updates, what was the biggest surprise for you? Was there anything you were hoping they were going to announce? CQ: Would a T6 Oberth be the greatest starship in the game, or the GREATEST starship in the game? What would be a fitting trait for such a fine ship? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Star Trek: Discovery Reveals First Look at Season Four! By Rosko McQueen “We’re all living in uncertainty”. They are the first words from Discovery’s Captain Michael Burnham in the teaser trailer for season four.  And as is often the case with the series, it looks at the world now and works to provide a reflection back to us through a sci-fi mirror.   The first noticeable difference is the uniforms have a new splash of colour. The grey Starfleet uniforms of the 32nd century have been upgraded.  We now have tops of command red, science blue and engineering gold along with medical white, offset with a black vertical stripe. So now there is no mistaking which department is which.   Image: StarTrek.com In the trailer we hear about, potentially, this season’s universe-threatening problem: a gravitational anomaly five light-years across. Where is it? We don’t know.  Where could it turn up? Not a clue. Who can save us all? We’ll find out later this year, as season four is set to premiere in 2021.    Star Trek: Picard Returns for Season 2 in 2022 By Elio Lleo While Discovery focuses on the large-scale event to tie the story together, season two of Star Trek: Picard, coming in 2022, is all the more personal.   The camera moves slowly towards Château Picard, and we then transition inside the home of the retired Admiral, weaving our way through his study.  On a table in the centre of the room is a Bajoran tablet, cracked and broken, possibly from the lost city of B’Hala.  A painting of the Enterprise-D overhangs the mantle where a bronze sculpture of a farmer and horse-drawn plough rests in the centre.   Picard’s chair sits behind a desk, draped in a Mintakan tapestry. On the desk we see a model of the USS Stargazer, a teacup and saucer–decaf perhaps?–and a small Kurlan naiskos perched on the edge of the table.   We pass over a combadge, a Dixon Hill novel and a copy of Paradise Lost. When Picard’s voiceover talks of “what we wish we had done in a crisis,” the shot sits squarely on the hull of the Stargazer.  We then cut to a gaming table upon which sits a deck of cards and a solitary queen of hearts.  The card dissolves before our eyes until all that is left is one corner, and the letter that tells us so much–Q. Q-ed Up For The Big Reveal Patrick Stewart spoke with Wil Wheaton about the second season of Picard, teasing the different “times” that we will see that have never been seen onscreen before. John de Lancie then beams in from his boat, expressing his delight at the opportunity to return to the role and his amazing ability to age himself up for the part.   Sir Patrick also hints at the critical moment Q returns and teases the trauma surrounding it. While De Lancie remarks on the apparent ease he can slip back into character, describing Q as annoying and self-involved. Lower Decks Season 2 Teaser By Rosko McQueen Paramount+ also announced season two of Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere later this year, and like any episode of Lower Decks, there's a lot of detail in a short amount of time. Image: StarTrek.com We see the Cerritos, with Mariner, Tendi and Rutherford hanging out. We cut to a Miranda class starship, the USS Macduff, activating evasive maneuvers.  Then out of nowhere, a mugato! Mariner shows off her sweet anbo-jyutsu moves, red suit and all.  Commander Ransom seems to have god-like powers, then–cut to a Pakled phaser party. A group of Cardassians get their butts kicked by Mariner wearing 80’s workout gear–THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!!! All hell breaks loose when snakes grow arms and attack Tendi, then we relax with the Lower Deckers in the comfort of the brig. But where is Boimler, you ask? He’s staring into the void and screaming for all to hear. Captain Riker throws out some more jazz references, but sadly Boimler didn’t get the joke as the Titan moves into some sort of wormhole or spatial distortion while under fire from multiple craft.     Season two of Lower Decks will premiere on Thursday, August 12, 2021. Star Trek: Prodigy: More Info! By Cat Hough And finally, we received a brief synopsis about the other animated series coming out, Star Trek: Prodigy. Co-creator Dan Hageman confirmed the series is set in the Delta Quadrant in the year 2383. It features a group of young aliens who find a lost Starfleet vessel that happens to be equipped with an EJH–Emergency Janeway Hologram. This training hologram was designed to assist a crew that may have strayed too far off course and is probably programmed to locate coffee in any nearby nebulae.  Image: TrekMovie.com The animation for the Janeway hologram was also revealed during First Contact Day, with Kate Mulgrew noting that the Hageman brothers insisted on “...making the character so beautiful.” CQ: With all the new Star Trek updates, what was the biggest surprise for you? Was there anything you were hoping they were going to announce? STAR TREK GAMING NEWS April Fools...But Maybe Not? By Cat Hough It was a quiet Friday morning at Ambassador Kael’s house. Coffee had been achieved. The toast was buttered. Star Trek Online’s dutiful Community Manager opened up his Twitter feed and spit coffee all over his keyboard. At least, if his post from April 2nd is any indication that’s what happened. “Morning folks! Did anything interesting happen while I was WHAT THE F…” https://twitter.com/AmbassadorKael/status/1378010255716622336?s=20 What was all the fuss? Well, it was an 11:59pm April Fool’s Day post to the official STO Twitter account. If it’s not just an April Fool’s prank, then it might spell doom for Kael’s jokingly vocal anti-T6 Oberth crusade. The post in question sported two images of what can only be a 2411 treatment of the Oberth-class. The images were captioned “Kael’s asleep! Post it post it POST IT!“ https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1377878220712914945?s=20 Yes, it was still April Fools. But, consider… someone clearly spent the time to model this 2411 Oberth to what looks like at least late-stage Work-In-Progress. It’s worth remembering that on a recent live stream of his work, Thomas Marrone pointed out that they sometimes have the ship art done well before the systems designers have the ship built. So, perhaps that’s the case here. But in any case, it’s hope for those Oberth fans among you, Captains. CQ: Would a T6 Oberth be the greatest starship in the game or the GREATEST starship in the game? What would be a fitting trait for such a fine ship? Delta Recruitment Returns! By Cat Hough Announced earlier today, and starting April 15th on PC and May 13th on Xbox and PS4, you can create a new Delta Recruit character. However, this Delta Recruit event has been slightly modified. You’ll still earn extra rewards, and gain special account unlocks, but the devs have removed some out-of-date missions and added new goals with new rewards.  For example, reputation mark reward boxes have been updated so that you can claim all of the reputation mark options, not just the ones that were around during the first launch of Delta Recruitment. And, there’s now a reward for reaching level 60, which gives you even more marks, Reputation dilithium, as well as salvage. Plus, there’s new rewards for completing your faction’s Admiralty campaign, which features a very special Admiralty card: the U.S.S. Voyager! Existing Delta Recruits will be able to complete these new goals as well, and if you’ve already finished them, you can claim the rewards immediately. Remember, to become a Delta Recruit and gain access to the rewards, you need to make a new 2409 Starfleet character, a Klingon Defense Force character, or a Romulan Republic character during the event, then you have to complete the tutorial and receive the special Delta Recruit tesseract transceiver device. Once you receive the device, your character is a Delta Recruit and you can complete the goals any time and claim the rewards, even after the event ends. Image: Cryptic Studios. Gambling and the Future of Loot Boxes Written by Elio Lleo Lock Boxes. A recurring topic of conversation on this show since their introduction into Star Trek Online those many moons–in 2012. Nowadays, they’re so ingrained into gaming ecosystems–not just STO–that most people have accepted their permanence. But does that mean we shouldn’t continue to look at the relationship between STO’s Lock Boxes–and every other video game’s respective lootbox–and gambling?  No, because as the mechanic continues to become part of the mainstream, it’s important to understand the impact it can have. Even if we have been told it’s not gambling because you get a “reward in every box.” Image: Cryptic Studios. In an April 2nd article on Ars Technica, writer Sam Machkovech spotlights new research from four British Universities, commissioned by the gambling-protection advocacy group BeGambleAware. What does the research suggest? “[T]he authors determine that loot box purchasing has a statistically significant tie to problem gambling behaviors.” So… how can we mitigate the problem? The suggestion is to go cold turkey. “The report leans toward starting with outright bans of paid loot boxes in software—as in, the easily defined practice of ‘any game-related purchase with a chance-based outcome’—or at least requiring more fully transparent ‘odds’ statements about the likelihood of specific in-game items in those loot boxes.” Image: BeGambleAware, University of Plymouth, and University of Wolverhampton, via Ars Technica. The report itself says particular circles of gamers are more susceptible to the lure of loot boxes, stating there are groups which are particularly at risk. ”Those particularly affected include males and younger gamers, with our survey screen of over 14k gamers also suggesting that those with lower educational attainment and lower levels of employment may be disproportionately affected. These factors, however, are unlikely to be limited to loot boxes.” Fleet Command Charts Its Next Course By Thomas Reynolds It’s bedtime for those old scientists in Fleet Command, but Scopely’s already sharing where the rest of 2021 will go. Players have a number of developments to look forward to, including an entirely new Officer Away Teams system. Send your unused characters out on errands–sorry, special assignments, and receive goods should they succeed in their tasks. And if they can’t handle even that, well, you can always send them to Starbase 80. https://startrekfleetcommand.scopely.com/2021/03/30/roadmap-update-march-2021/ Cetacean Citation in Timelines By Thomas Reynolds George and Gracie are now crew members in Timelines. If this sounds like an April Fool’s prank, I assure you, it isn’t. George and Gracie are now crew members. Complete the three temporary achievement tiers before April 15th, and you can finally staff your ship’s Cetacean Ops facility. Assuming you have the transparent aluminum on hand, of course. Image: Disruptor Beam. It’s Time to Re-enter the Nexus with Star Trek: Legends By Rosko McQueen Load up your favourite Personal Access Display Device and get set to enter the Nexus. Star Trek: Legends has launched on Apple Arcade this week and we’ve had a brief look at the turn-based game. You are the captain of the U.S.S. Artemis, a ship designed to enter the Nexus and draw on the unique properties of the ethereal energy ribbon. Over the course of the game you build a crew of Trek favourites from across timelines and universes to take on missions, collect resources, and power up your characters.   The developers explain in a blog post on StarTrek.com their decision to base the premise of the game around the Nexus, as opposed to other ways of putting characters in a blender like the holodeck, or using Q or the Talosians. Instead they take the largely unexplored idea of the Nexus and expand upon it, incorporating the idea that it was made by design. In a familiar Ready Player One-type premise, each character has their own utopian reality sphere, which is also infinite. So, there’s lots of room to grow.   But How Does It Play? Image: StarTrek.com The gameplay is straightforward, tap the bad guy to target them. You can use Worf’s battle cry to lower morale (it’s super effective!), and there are your typical character class types; engineering, medical, security, etc.  I’ve only played a few early missions as it guides you through how to assemble your team, battle the bad guys and power up your crew using latinum, protomatter and bio-mimetic gels as some of the in-game currency.  But it’s also a brand new game on the platform, and it shows. I had to force quit a couple of times after the game froze at the same point.  The artwork and the attention to detail is excellent. The Cardassians look menacing and there are a few costume callbacks to Voyager and Deep Space Nine standalone episodes. So far so good, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the game grows over time.

By Cat Hough It was a quiet Friday morning at Ambassador Kael's house. Coffee had been achieved. The toast was buttered. Star Trek Online's dutiful Community Manager opened up his Twitter feed and spit coffee all over his keyboard. At least, if his post from April 2nd is any indication that's what happened. “Morning folks! Did anything interesting happen while I was WHAT THE F…” https://twitter.com/AmbassadorKael/status/1378010255716622336?s=20 What was all the fuss? Well, it was an 11:59pm April Fool's Day post to the official STO Twitter account. If it's not just an April Fool's prank, then it might spell doom for Kael's jokingly vocal anti-T6 Oberth crusade. The post in question sported two images of what can only be a 2411 treatment of the Oberth-class. The images were captioned “Kael's asleep! It's worth remembering that on a recent live stream of his work, Thomas Marrone pointed out that they sometimes have the ship art done well before the systems designers have the ship built. So, perhaps that's the case here. But in any case, it's hope for those Oberth fans among you, Captains. You'll still earn extra rewards, and gain special account unlocks, but the devs have removed some out-of-date missions and added new goals with new rewards.  For example, reputation mark reward boxes have been updated so that you can claim all of the reputation mark options, not just the ones that were around during the first launch of Delta Recruitment. And, there's now a reward for reaching level 60, which gives you even more marks, Reputation dilithium, as well as salvage. Plus, there's new rewards for completing your faction's Admiralty campaign, which features a very special Admiralty card: the U.S.S. Voyager! Existing Delta Recruits will be able to complete these new goals as well, and if you've already finished them, you can claim the rewards immediately. Nowadays, they're so ingrained into gaming ecosystems–not just STO–that most people have accepted their permanence. But does that mean we shouldn't continue to look at the relationship between STO's Lock Boxes–and every other video game's respective lootbox–and gambling?  No, because as the mechanic continues to become part of the mainstream, it's important to understand the impact it can have. Even if we have been told it's not gambling because you get a “reward in every box.” Image: Cryptic Studios. “The report leans toward starting with outright bans of paid loot boxes in software—as in, the easily defined practice of ‘any game-related purchase with a chance-based outcome'—or at least requiring more fully transparent ‘odds' statements about the likelihood of specific in-game items in those loot boxes.” Image: BeGambleAware, University of Plymouth, and University of Wolverhampton, via Ars Technica. These factors, however, are unlikely to be limited to loot boxes.” Fleet Command Charts Its Next Course By Thomas Reynolds It's bedtime for those old scientists in Fleet Command, but Scopely's already sharing where the rest of 2021 will go. Players have a number of developments to look forward to, including an entirely new Officer Away Teams system. Send your unused characters out on errands–sorry, special assignments, and receive goods should they succeed in their tasks. And if they can't handle even that, well, you can always send them to Starbase 80. https://startrekfleetcommand.scopely.com/2021/03/30/roadmap-update-march-2021/ Cetacean Citation in Timelines By Thomas Reynolds George and Gracie are now crew members in Timelines. If this sounds like an April Fool's prank, I assure you, it isn't. George and Gracie are now crew members. Complete the three temporary achievement tiers before April 15th, and you can finally staff your ship's Cetacean Ops facility. Assuming you have the transparent aluminum on hand, of course. Image: Disruptor Beam. It's Time to Re-enter the Nexus with Star Trek: Legends By Rosko McQueen Load up your favourite Personal Access Display Device and get set to enter the Nexus. Star Trek: Legends has launched on Apple Arcade this week and we've had a brief look at the turn-based game. So, there's lots of room to grow.   But How Does It Play? Image: StarTrek.com The gameplay is straightforward, tap the bad guy to target them. You can use Worf's battle cry to lower morale (it's super effective!), and there are your typical character class types; engineering, medical, security, etc.  I've only played a few early missions as it guides you through how to assemble your team, battle the bad guys and power up your crew using latinum, protomatter and bio-mimetic gels as some of the in-game currency.  But it's also a brand new game on the platform, and it shows. I had to force quit a couple of times after the game froze at the same point.  The artwork and the attention to detail is excellent. The Cardassians look menacing and there are a few costume callbacks to Voyager and Deep Space Nine standalone episodes. So far so good, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the game grows over time.

Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you believe the Star Trek Franchise is diverse enough to avoid ‘Franchise Fatigue? AND CQ: What Lower Decks content do you want to see in-game? Story missions with Beta Shift? Tulgana IV location map? The Dog? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Alex Kurtzman Takes 5 Alex Kurtzman is a busy man. Other than his work on “The Comey Rule” and the upcoming “Silence of the Lambs” television adaptation titled “Clarice”, Kurtzman also works on a little franchise called Star Trek. This week, Kurtzman sat down with the Hollywood Reporter’s “TV’s Top 5” to discuss everything he’s been working on - and while we may or may not be excited for his other projects - well...let’s just say we aren’t partnered with the Thomas Harris Podcast Network. Kurtzman spent a lot of time talking about Star Trek: Discovery, which is of no surprise - the third season’s premiere is set for October 15th. When asked about how long the series would likely run, Kurtzman was frank in both the series' praise and direction - as well as in the Showrunners commitment to keeping Trek fresh. Along those same lines, Kurtzman noted that he had plans with ViacomCBS for Star Trek that reached - currently - to 2027. When asked whether he was afraid of over-saturating the market with Star Trek, Kurtzman expressed that he felt the world needed the franchise, and that diversity in programming was the key to keeping it relevant. Lower Decks NYCC Panel Last week, in episode 481 of Priority One, we talked about the New York Comic Con Star Trek happenings. But if you’ll remember, we skipped coverage of the Lower Decks panel because it was spoiler heavy. You’ve had a week to catch up, but if you still haven’t watched the season finale of “Lower Decks”, skip to Star Trek Gaming! -- SPOILERS INCOMING -- During the Comic Con panel, Showrunner Mike McMahan and the cast of “Lower Decks” talked about what happened in season 1, and where their characters were heading for season 2 - sans, sadly, Fred Tatasciore’s Lieutenant Shaxs. There were some fun ideas on how to bring back the battle-hardened Bajoran - and discussion on whether he was really dead - or just mostly dead. About half way through the panel, the cast was joined by series special guest Jonathan Frakes, and that’s when things got predictably spoiler-y. As it turns out, Frakes spoiled plot points for co-star Jack Quaid before the show even started. Of Riker, and his appearance on Lower Decks, Showrunner Mike McMahan stressed the characters' fun attitude and joy.  And if you’re concerned that Boimler will mysteriously find his way back to the Cerritos for the Season 2 premiere, fear not. He will be on the Titan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLVO17dQOS8 Mike McMahan Talks Lower Decks This week, Mike McMahan took a Season One victory lap - of sorts - hitting Youtube, Variety, and Inverse to discuss what happened on and off screen during “Lower Decks” first season. On Youtube, McMahan explained his thoughts behind using the Pakled as the finale’s “Big Bads”.  He continued those musings with Variety, before moving on to spoilers - and cheeky possible-spoilers. ”We’ll see the Titan next season because Boimler is off the Cerritos, and we’ll be seeing Capt. Riker again as well. Boimler has been talking about moving on to bigger and better all first season, and now we’re going to see what happens when he gets what he wants.”. McMahan said Councilor Troi would NOT make in appearance in Season 2. But when asked if OTHER TNG Alumn would join, noted, ”That, my friend, I will not tell you, I would say, feels like a pretty good chance of it.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxWq77kgg3Q McMahan told Variety that the second season of Lower Decks would dive deeper into sexuality - Mariner’s specifically - saying ”For me and for the writers as we were making this, we didn’t intentionally mean for anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis. Every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual, in a way. That being said, I am not the most amazing person at writing those kind of stories. I think we get a little bit better about it in the second season.” Mike McMahan Keeps Talking Lower Decks Heading to Inverse, McMahan may have answered a question we’ve asked on Priority One. Could Lower Decks be an off-kilter representation of the Cerritos’ adventures through Starfleet gossip? ”If you’re in Starfleet, and all this stuff has happened, it would be like if you were in the military now, and you were reading about — or hearing about – [real events] either officially or word of mouth through people who have been on ships, or people catching up. There are so many people on these ships, of course they’re going to talk to each other. They’re going to take real life events and put those into media. I think what I’m trying to say is there is no one unifying theory of communication. To me, it’s more that there’s going to be mosaic of communication. There’s things that are going to be popularized, there’s things in the news, there’s things you’ll learn at Starfleet academy there’s going to be stuff you’ll hear rumors about. It’s out there and it’s going to be known.” If you’re wondering about the “First Contact” uniforms making an appearance on Lower Decks, McMahan had an answer for that too! ”I’m very fascinated with the idea that we have replicators [in Star Trek] that can make anything. But who’s designing that stuff? It becomes like intellectual items, like why aren’t they all eating Lincoln’s last meal? The more you look at it, some ships would have different stuff, which is why you’d want to get the thing with the purple stripe on it, which goes all the way down to uniforms. I mean why is Starfleet even in uniforms? It’s not to make them camouflaged and they’re not strictly military. It’s representational of who Starfleet is.” STLV 2020 CANCELLED We’ve got some breaking news tonight, thanks to our Associate Producer Shane Hoover. According to NBC news affiliate Las Vegas 3, the official Star Trek Las Vegas convention has been cancelled. From the website, "Creation Entertainment, the company that brings the Trek convention each year, has announced that the December 2020 show is not going to happen due to pandemic-related reasons. The Star Trek convention will resume next year in Las Vegas on August 11 - 15 at the Rio.” Though we couldn't find any OFFICIAL release from Creation Entertainment at the time of this writing, their previous STLV 2020 page is no longer accessible. Instead it gives way to the 55th anniversary of Star Trek - and creator Gene Roddenberry’s 100th Birthday - in 2021. Keep your ear right here for more on the news. Star Trek Gaming News by Shane Hoover and Thomas Reynolds Venture(Beat) into the Final Frontier By Thomas Reynolds Newer captains may find it hard to believe (and older captains harder to accept), but Cryptic Studios opened its doors before the NX-01 first left spacedock. This year Cryptic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and last week tech business magazine VentureBeat published an interview with Cryptic CEO Stephen D’Angelo. In the interview D’Angelo shows off his toy cabinet (he has a Galaxy-X model, not that we’re jealous or anything), and speaks about thirteen years with a game company driven by outside IP. Saying specifically of Star Trek Online,  ”Star Trek is a universe more than a storytelling style. We’ve tried to, like I said, give people an experience in that universe that captures the look, the feel, and the stories, but going for the diversity the universe offers”. D’Angelo also talked about being STO’s executive producer when it went free-to-play, the changing nature of the game’s playerbase, and the company’s history in the MMO space as a whole. The Titan Reprises A Familiar Tune? By Thomas Reynolds Captains, be advised: the Trek nuggets in this segment may spoil your dinner. Proceed with caution. Last week’s season finale of Star Trek Lower Decks captivated us with drama, tragedy, callbacks, comedy–you know, all that jazz. While the show taketh away (RIP Shaxs), it might also giveth STO players something they’ve wanted for a very long time. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account dropped a screenshot of the in-game Titan and quoted its swingin’ captain’s call to action. Admittedly, this doesn’t explicitly say what is going on with the Titan in 2411. Cryptic may have simply been capitalizing on the ship’s newfound public awareness. However, we had it from Ambassador Kael himself that “there’s something coming from Lower Decks soon-ish,” but he couldn’t tell us about it lest he ”spoil a surprise in the last episode.” It’s hard not to imagine a T6 Luna-class is finally in the cards, and  its holodeck has the Bourbon Street Bar already loaded. Or maybe we’re getting little horga'hn ground devices for the upcoming Tulgana IV map. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314569893358968832 Synth Wave: the Extended Remix By Thomas Reynolds Hopefully you’ve had a chance to play House Shattered’s new TFO, “Synth Wave,” since it was released last week. If you have, you might've noticed some of the escaping ships really seem to like the Utopia Planitia Starbase, because they never leave it. On October 9th, the official STO Twitter account also confirmed that ships were getting stuck within the starbase, which means they could never leave and the TFO could never end. Cryptic says it’ll fix the issue with the October 13th patch, and the event will be extended by another week to make up for the bug. Apparently you shouldn’t let homicidal AIs write your Holodeck code. https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1314617854197526531?s=20

Egy nyitva hagyott kommunikációs csatorna miatt az egész hajó számára kiderül, hogy Mariner valójában Freeman kapitány lánya, ami miatt a legénység egyből a lázadó természetű zászlóshoz fordul, hogy előnyökre tehessen szert a parancsnoki szinten. Míg Boimler és Mariner a Sacramentóra szóló kinevezésért verseng, a pakledek elpusztítják a vadiúj Solvang csillaghajót, utána pedig a helyszínre érkező Cerritos is a rég látott ellenségek célkeresztjébe kerül. A Lower Decks évadzáró epizódját Gergővel beszéljük át.

Episode 286: Lower Decks No Small Parts  Aaron and David are back this week to discuss the next episode of Lower Decks “No Small Parts”. But first we have news that Kate Mulgrew is going to reprise her role as Captain or Admiral Janeway in the Star Trek Prodigy series that will be coming to Nickelodeon. In “No Small Parts'' we get the Pakleds back something David was hoping for since the show first premiered. This time the Pakled have gone from passive aggressive dullard kidnappers to full on raging barbarians that offer up an actual threat to the crew of the USS Cerritos. Luckily Rider and Troi on the USS Titan show up at the last second to save our heroes. This was so great to finally get to see the Titan on screen and see more legacy characters in Lower Decks. This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: Picard’s possible series longevity, Sir Patrick’s history with Star Trek, Mike McMahon’s vision for Lower Decks, and what Simon Pegg knows about the next Trek film - spoiler: it isn’t much! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online goes to Red Alert, takes on rubberbanding, and Star Trek Timelines announces its newest event! Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: Do you think Star Trek is better suited for Television, Movies, or is there a place for Trek on both? AND CQ: What’s your Star Trek Online Red Alert of choice? Why? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Akiva Goldsman Talks Picard Delays are an inevitability - even more so now, during the pandemic. But with those delays comes anticipation, and sometimes opportunity.  At least that’s what Star Trek Executive Producer and Oscar winning writer Akiva Goldsman thinks. Last week, Goldsman sat down with Collider to discuss Star Trek: Picard season 2, how quarantine has changed the timetable, and how the delays may be a blessing in disguise. Goldsman discussed those inevitable delays we just discussed, telling Collider ”We were to start shooting in June, which I guarantee you we will not unless the world opens tomorrow. We had broken the season, we were about halfway through the writing of it. You know, we will start as soon as we can once the world opens, you know? Prep will have to resume, and then we’ll start. We know what it is, and it’s cool.” In regards to Picard’s early “dark tone”, as well as Covid-19’s silver-lining, Goldsman explained ”I kept saying, ‘They’re reviewing the first act of a movie.’ The first act of a movie is always dark. If you stopped It’s a Wonderful Life at the bridge, it’s a really dark movie! Because fundamentally in a longform narrative, it’s a redemption story, it’s a healing story, it has to be bad at the beginning so it gets good at the end, otherwise there’s nothing to fix. So we’re in this weird world now where we create one narrative object but we dole it out bit by bit, which is fascinating. And can be kind of fun. But what you really want is to be able to refine your setups once you’ve written your payoffs… if in fact you could have the time to write 10 hours first, that would be amazing. And maybe we will.” When asked how many seasons Goldsman foresaw in Picard’s future, he responded ”I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show[...]Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that good will until he feels he’s done.” Sir Patrick Lets Loose With CBS This Morning Speaking of Sir Patrick, the “Picard” star had a candid interview with CBS This Morning about his history with Star Trek, Picard, and his daily sonnets. When asked by "CBS This Morning" co-host Tony Dokoupil whether he always aspired to Produce a series, Stewart said ”No. I was too naïve, too new at the game of series television. And I had so much work to do. I mean[...]the first couple of years, I didn't have a life or a social life at all. We'd work a five-day week; 13-, 14-, sometimes 15-hour days, especially towards the end of the week. And Saturday morning, I would allow myself a little sleep in. And then I would do my own laundry, which by the way, I still do. It's an obsession with me.” Stewart was frank about his early days on the TNG set, saying /”I lectured my fellow cast members about some of the fooling around that was going on on the set, and the games that they were playing and the singing and the jokes and the ruining shots. And there was this horrible silence. And it was Denise Crosby who said to me, 'Trick, come on, we gotta have some fun!' And I said, 'We are not here to have fun.' I said that! And that became, you know, a legendary quote, as I progressively got sillier and sillier as the series wore on.” Finally, in regards to Stewart’s charming daily sonnets, Sir Patrick said ”I had no idea what I was saying or what it meant. But there was something in the language” Mike McMahon Tells Us Something About Lower Decks Star Trek’s first animated series since the 70’s is set to air this year, and the buzz is starting to form around the upcoming “Lower Decks”. In the interview from our first story, Akiva Goldsman said ”Lower Decks] literally couldn’t seem funnier to me”. But what does series showrunner and Star Trek super-fan Mike McMahon think? We’re glad you asked! McMahon discussed the series with Slashfilm this week, explaining the premise and structure of the show ”If you’re watching Lower Decks, you’re getting a full Star Trek episode from the perspective of people who are having their own social and emotional stories and their own sci-fi stories, but they just aren’t on the bridge. They don’t have the information the bridge is getting, and they don’t have the responsibility.” McMahon, who was the showrunner on the popular “Rick and Morty”, explained how Lower Decks isn’t a Star Trek skinned version of his previous show ”A big thing that was important to me was figuring out how do we comedically access these characters. How can these characters be funny and not break Star Trek? You can’t have a Morty [from Rick and Morty] in Star Trek. You can’t just have a stupid person in Starfleet, otherwise it breaks the aspirational paradigm of what humanity is like in Starfleet. So our leads are foils for each other, but they’re very much ingrained in Star Trek.” McMahon gave a little flavor to the series main characters, explaining Ensign Beckett Mariner as ”kind of like Captain Kirk if Kirk wasn’t a captain and didn’t have the power. Kirk would follow his gut, and she followers her gut.” and Ensign Brad Boimler as /”so by-the-book and so burdened by following the rules that he can’t follow his gut.” Simon Pegg Tells Us Nothing About Star Trek IV Oh Simon Pegg. How sick you must be of answering questions about Star Trek. But bless your heart - you keep doing it. This week, Collider had the honor of asking Pegg about a possible upcoming movie that he knows very little about. Pegg was asked what he and his castmates knew about an upcoming film, to which he replied ”If [Paramount says], ‘We’d like to do another movie,’ I’m sure we’ll all jump at the chance. I miss those guys, and I love making those films. But I just don’t know. Noah Hawley’s project has been mentioned, and maybe that will happen. I don’t know anything about that. So yeah, I’m as in the dark as everyone else, I’m in the same boat as you guys.” Pegg discussed the more “niche” audience of Trek, when compared to - say - the Marvel Universe, and offered ”the obvious thing to do would be to not go for that massive spectacle, go for something a little bit more restrained in the vein of the original series. Yes, that would be a brilliant thing to do, and I’m sure it probably has been discussed… You specialize a little bit more.” Finally, Pegg may have talked himself out of future Star Trek work, telling Collider ”Maybe TV is a better place for [Star Trek] now. Television has evolved so much. It’s become something which is very much a contemporary, a peer of cinema. It’s simply viewed in a different way. It isn’t a reduced scope anymore. You can still do masses of interesting things, and it can still look modern and not inexpensive. Maybe television is a better format for Star Trek. That’s where it started, you know.” Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover PC: All the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, all the Red Alerts All the Red Alerts, now put your shields up If Operation Delta Rising, the Draanuur colony, and the Khitomer-class battlecruiser have taught us anything, it’s the value of collaboration across different cultures towards our common goals. However our less-pleasant galactic neighbors have taken the hint, and are launching a coordinated multi-front offensive across the galaxy. It’s teamwork that makes the existential threat work, I guess. From May 28th at 8 AM Pacific to June 4th at 10 AM Pacific, PC captains will be able to play all five Red Alert Task Force Operations: Borg Red Alert Elachi Red Alert Tholian Red Alert Tzenkethi Red Alert Nakuhl Red Alert Players will receive the normal rewards for each playthrough, and each day’s first completed Red Alert will also grant Daily Event Progress on their account. After receiving five daily progress token players will be able to claim either a Universal Tech Upgrade or Specialization Point grand prize for their account. The grand prize can also be purchased outright on a prorated scale, relative to daily progress made in the event. Players who complete a Red Alert TFO each day after getting the grand prize will receive a dilithium ore bonus, starting at 8,000 and increasing by 1,000 each day. So that there’s no confusion, captains, I want to stress: THERE. ARE. FIVE. ALERTS. Console: Eyyyy, La Sirena From June 2nd at 8 AM Pacific to June 23rd at 10 Pacific, captains on console will have another crack at simultaneous Infinity R&D and Duty Officer Promotions. As usual, during the promotion R&D Packs and Duty Officer Packs purchased from the C-Store and opened will grant either an additional 10 Lobi Crystals or a Special Requisition Choice Pack - Tier 6 Promotional Ship Choice Pack. And this time a new ship is making its console debut in the Ship Choice Pack—the contentiously-named La Sirena T6 Heavy Raider, as seen in Star Trek: Picard. Console: To Hell With Honor Also coming to consoles, from June 2nd through June 23rd,  players can assault J’Ula’s moon based shipyards in the “To Hell With Honor” Featured TFO Event. Just like it was on PC, this is a unique TFO featuring space combat over a moon surface map. Destroy J’Ula’s ships before they can join her fleet, and deal with unexpected guests provoked by J’Ula’s Mycelial weapon technology.  This featured TFO is part two of the four part Event Campaign on consoles, with each day’s completion rewarding 50 Event Campaign progress points. To see the event rewards, like the DOT-7 Drones last seen on Short Treks, follow the link to STO’s blog in our show notes.  Rubberbanding Survey Picture this: you’re tearing across the Park in the Dyson Ground Battlezone like, or because, there won’t be a tomorrow. The Voth are almost done collecting Omega particles, and you’re the only one who can stop them. The V-Rex is in sight, you ready your Orbital Strike—and suddenly you’re 50 meters away, running over the same patch of grass again. And again. And again. And scene. You, mon capitan, have been rubberbanded. Player complaints about lagging in MMOs are as old as MMOs themselves. However Star Trek Online has *allegedly* been more badly-affected than usual recently. On Monday the 25th, the official Star Trek Online Twitter account shared a link to a SurveyMonkey poll, asking players to describe their recent experiences. The poll includes your general geographic location, proxy usage, ISP, and in-game locations you find particularly troublesome. Link in the show notes. PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium.  Epsilon Fleet - another Tier V upgrade almost ready to go on cooldown. OTHER GAMING NEWS Star Trek Timelines Events From Thursday May 28 at noon ET to June 1 at noon ET, Star Trek Timelines will feature the Blundering Terror Galaxy Event for the Federation, Ferengi Alliance, and Borg factions. No details for the event narrative have been released but we do have the following key details.  The 4-star Professor Scott--Great Scott! [throw toilet paper roll]--will be returning as a featured crew member, joined by the new 5-star crew member Determined Paris and 4-star Grebnedlog. Grebnedlog, for those whose rubber bands may be broken, is the captain of the Pakled ship in the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare." As always, event crew members grant the highest bonuses. However variants of Tom Paris, Montgomery Scott, and crew members with the Thief trait will also make you strong and make your Faction go. The winning Faction may not attain the 24th level of awareness, but they will receive a new 5-star Kira-variant crew member. 20th century science fiction author Kay Eaton, seen in the DS9 episode "Far Beyond the Stars," will be a featured crew member in the next event starting on 06/04.

All Good Things is the finale episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. It is noteworthy because, in it, Picard jumps forward through time into the future, around the time that the new Star Trek Picard will be set. Join me as I geek out over the 10 episodes and movies you should watch before Star Trek Picard. ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven. I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of The Stars. And I am a nerd. This is episode 5 of the podcast, and we’re now halfway through my list of 10 episodes and movies that you should check out before watching Star Trek: Picard. Today, we’re looking at the finale episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. All Good Things. The IMDB description for this episode reads Capt. Picard finds himself shifting continually into the past, future and present and must use that to discover a threat to humanity’s existence. And this episode first aired on the 23 May 1994 Make it so. My first encounter with this episode was actually seeing the VHS for sale at a shop. It was a special numbered limited edition that came with a little book that covered the history of the show and that was the first I even knew the show was ending, so I bought that and I watched it, and then I watched most of the rest of season 7 on TV. It’s just how it goes down here. So this episode begins with Worf and Deanna Troi finishing up a date on the holodeck. This relationship is something that they’d been building slowly over the course of season 7.Personally, I was never quite able to buy into the idea of Worf and Troi as a couple. Worf and Dax seemed a much more natural pairing to me. But, it added some interesting drama to this episode, as we’ll see. And just before the credits roll, Picard arrives, as close as we’ve seen him to panic, explaining that somehow, he’s moving back and forth through time. Having a big grand 2-hour finale was a pretty rare thing in 1994. A lot of shows started off with a movie-length pilot, but most shows didn’t end with such a big bang. Star Trek the Next Generation had a planned end, because they wanted to start making movies with the TNG cast. This set a precedent that both Deep Space Nine and Voyager would follow. So as Picard tells Troi about his time-travelling, he jumps forward as we get our first glimpse at the future. This is the year 2395. Star Trek: Picard will be set 4 years later in 2399. So we’re near the end of the 24th century. Picard is retired from Starfleet, having served as an ambassador. He’s now living on the Picard Estate tending the vineyard. This is a very similar life situation that we’ll find him in the new show. But in Picard, he’d been an admiral before retirement and we get the impression there was a lot more tension to his departure from Starfleet. Either way, he’s ended up in the same situation. It’s important to note here that what we’re seeing in this episode is an alternate future. We know things will proceed differently in the real future, that is Star Trek: Picard. The characters say this themselves in the show. And, the Enterprise D was destroyed in Star Trek Generations, so it won’t still be around at this point to have a third nacelle installed. And we learn that Picard has irrumodic syndrome, a form of dementia. A lot of the drama in this episode comes from Picard trying to convince his crewmates that he’s not crazy. In the future, it’s because of his irrumodic syndrome. In the past, it’s because he can’t risk telling them the truth of what’s going on for fear of affecting the timeline. In the present, they come to believe him quickly, because Crusher is able to measure the fact that he’s accumulating days worth of memories in mere moments. Crusher also finds a defect in Picard’s brain, in the present, that could lead to a condition like irrumodic syndrome. So it’s a very real possibility for his future. I wonder, what will they do with that in Picard? Will they acknowledge it? We’ve seen in the trailers, times when Picard is talking to Data when he clearly can’t be there for real. Are these dreams? My guess is that Picard is hallucinating Data because he’s developing irrumodic syndrome. What do you think? Then Picard flashes back to the past, to season 1. We see a scene that occurs just before the pilot episode. The past sequences in this episode give a wonderful sense of nostalgia.Star Trek: The Next Generation changed a great deal over its seven years. The uniforms changed, the tone and feel of the show changed. The sets changed. But most of all, I changed during that time. When the show first started, I was a kid. When it ended I was well into my teens. Finishing up school and preparing to go to university. There was a lot I’d forgotten about the early days of the show. I’d almost forgotten that the character of Tasha Yar had ever existed. But this episode brought it all back. We even get to see a beardless Riker through the use of some old footage on the viewscreen. Very cleverly done. Each time Picard shifts, he retains more knowledge of his experiences. He becomes completely away of all three time periods. I like how Geordi is willing to just go with Picard to visit Data. He doesn’t entirely believe Picard, but he’s a friend, so he’s willing to accompany him. The exterior shot of Data’s house in Cambridge is cool. I love the mix of the old and the new, well, futuristic.I also love his tea lady. It’s great when he asks for Tea, Earl grey hot. And she says “Of course it’s ‘ot. What do you want in it?”Interesting note, Data says that she makes him laugh, which suggests to me that in this timeline, just like in ours, Data eventually installed the emotion chip.At this point in his life, Data has fully integrated his emotions into his being. And that’s kind of how he comes across. It’s great to see O’Brien back appearing in the red uniform just as he did in the pilot episode, Encounter at Farpoint. Of course, at that point, the character didn’t have a name. He was just the conn officer. Picard calls for a red alert in the shuttle bay, because he keeps seeing visions of people, which we’ll learn are from Q’s fantasy based on the post-atomic horror. The crew all look stunned and refuse to move. This is actually kind of believable. When I did training to be a fire warden at work, I learned a little about people’s behaviour. Their natural inclination in a situation like this is to wait and see what everyone else does. The captain is acting very oddly, so I’ll just stay still and look uncomfortable. But Yar’s training kicks in. The captain ordered a red alert. It doesn’t matter if I don’t understand his reasoning. He’s the captain so his orders are to be obeyed. She makes the others move, which is kind of what a fire warden needs to do when the evacuation alarm goes off. I appreciate the trouble they went to in order to modify the sets to look as they did in season 1. The wall of the conference room is different in later seasons. There are also some panels on the bridge that change. Picard’s slip up when he gives Worf an order that should be given to the security chief is a nice touch. In both the past and the present, Romulans are entering the neutral zone to investigate an anomaly, which of course is a dangerous situation. I also really like how Data’s dialogue and performance are different between the time periods. It shows just how much Data has changed over the years. Crusher is really struggling with Picard’s irrumodic syndrome. She’s convinced it will happen just as Picard has seen in the future. He’s not as worried. The future is not set in stone, he says. I like that this episode lets us really see the human side of Crusher. I don’t think the show always did her justice. It’s a nice little reminder that Crusher has very deep feelings for Picard, as was recently revealed in the episode attached. Interesting little tidbit. Future Geordi has the blue ocular implants like we’ll see him get later in the TNG movies. I love that Crusher is now captain of a medical ship. The USS Pasteur is a cool looking vessel. And the future Starfleet uniforms also look really cool. We know that they’re choosing not to use these uniforms in Picard, which is a shame. Especially since DS9 and Voyager both consistently used these uniforms whenever they portrayed this time period. Still, people like to put their own marks on things. I do like that they’ve taken some inspiration from this uniform, such as the rank pips on the chest. I like that Picard and Crusher married in the future, but it always disappointed me that they were divorced. Whenever I hear about a divorce, it always makes me sad. Even a fictional one. I just, I can’t comprehend divorce. I can’t fathom it. I guess that shows how lucky I’ve been with my marriage. The fact that Crusher kept the name Picard shows that she still cares for him. I guess there could be other more practical reasons she kept it, but the way she interacts with him also shows how much she cares. So, I’m left wondering…what went wrong? I hope they acknowledge the relationship between Picard and Crusher in the new show. The nostalgia kicks into high gear when Picard finds himself standing in the 21st-century courthouse and Q appears in his ridiculous judge outfit.I remember thinking how awesome it was that they were tying this story directly back into the first episode. So Q makes the argument that Picard and his crew have squandered the last seven years. In Picard’s mind, they have expanded their understanding of the universe, but from Q’s point of view it has been a very limited amount of progress, compared to what they still have to achieve, and from a Q point of view, I can understand that. Here’s an interesting question. Why are the Q so interested in the human race. The crew of the Enterprise and Picard in particular? Why are they not judging the Klingons, or the Vulcans, or the Pakled, or the Ferengi? My theory is that they see something special in the human race. A potential for greatness. And in their own, rather inappropriate way, I think they’re trying to encourage us to reach that potential. And then Q drops a bombshell. The destruction of the human race will be Picard’s fault. He will cause their extinction. Can’t you just feel Picard’s frustration when the anomaly fails to appear in the future. It just confirms to everyone else that all of this is in his mind.Of course, it makes perfect sense why the anomaly isn’t here, once we know what is causing it, but it doesn’t help Picard’s credibility. Given the evidence, it’s actually extremely loyal of Picard’s friends to still be doing this with him. As Crusher says, “If it were anyone else but you, we wouldn’t even be here.” At this point, Picard starts taking advantage of his time-shifting, using knowledge he gains in the future to help him in the present and the past. The anomaly is having strange effects on the crew of the Enterprise. Their bodies are reverting to previous states. This is causing old injuries to be healed, but it’s not so good for Nurse Ogawa who loses her baby. This phenomenon is a key to what’s going on with the destruction of humanity. The anomaly is fascinating. The earlier in history, the larger it is. When Q takes Picard back to prehistoric times, the anomaly fills the entire Alpha Quadrant. It prevents life from arising on earth. Q Goes out of his way to give Picard hints to help him figure this all out. There’s no malevolence on his part. He wants Picard to succeed and save his people. So the anomaly prevents humanity from coming into existence, and Picard is responsible for the anomaly. He still doesn’t understand how he caused it though. We learn that Troi died at some point in the past. Worf and Troi never got together. Worf saw Riker as the reason. This has caused a rift between these two friends. The scene where Riker discusses this with Crusher, Geordi and Data is really good. When Picard sees the three tachyon pulses, from three different time periods, all converging, he realises what caused the anomaly. They caused it with the pulses. In effect, they created the anomaly they were looking for, but because it travels back through time, it didn’t exist in the future.Unfortunately, now that he knows, he has the challenge of trying to convince his shipmates, who are by now convinced he is crazy. How frustrating it must be to have the answer, but struggle to articulate it. And worse, people won’t listen to you, to give you a chance to explain yourself.Luckily, Data catches on and allows him to speak. Unfortunately, at this point, there’s a whopping big plot hole. You see, it makes no sense for them to see the initial formation of the anomaly when they return to the Devron system. The anomaly existing reversed in time. It grows as it travels back through time. And, if it exists now, then it should retroactively be at the earlier point when they were on the Pasteur. It doesn’t work. It’s a difficult hole to plug, and I can’t think of how they could have written it differently off the top of my head.Don’t get me wrong, this is an awesome episode, but this plot hole does bother me. It’s bothered me for 26 years.Anyway, we’ll put that aside. The climactic scene where the three versions of the Enterprise enter the anomaly and collapse it with a static warp shell is fantastic. Q was ordered by the continuum to put Picard though this, but helping him out was Q’s own idea.Through all of this, Q has shown Picard a new level of exploration. He expanded his mind to think outside of the normal constraints of space and time, considering options he’d normally never consider. See why I have that theory about the Q seeing potential in humanity and wanting to push them along a bit to see how far they can go. Q’s final words to Picard almost suggest a promise from the writers, that there are amazing things to come, where Picard will be further stretched. The movies never really paid off on this promise. I understand why. They had to stand alone for a wider audience. But I wonder if they’ll come back to this idea in Star Trek: Picard?I won’t hold my breath, but it could be interesting. The episode rounds out with a touching scene as the whole senior crew get together as a family. Picard joins them for their poker game, for the first time. And the Enterprise sails off into the unknown. This really was a fantastic episode. It worked on multiple levels. It was a great character piece. It had a really interesting sci-fi concept. And, it not only called back to the past but closed off the present and hinted at the promise of the future as well. You might say it was the perfect finale episode for The Next Generation. It doesn’t have the sense of finality and closure that you might expect in a finale, but this isn’t really the end of the story. They were jumping straight into movies after this. I’m looking forward to seeing how the world of Star Trek Picard differs from the future portrayed in this episode, as well as the similarities it may have. I hope you’ve enjoyed this look back at All Good Things. Next time, we’re looking at the movie Star Trek First Contact, which continues the development of the Borg, and adds a whole lot of new lore to the star trek universe.I’ll see you then. Live long and prosper. Make it so.
