Join Dr. Jodi Richardson in this powerful and deeply moving episode as she welcomes acclaimed author and psychotherapist Dr. Stephanie Dowrick to discuss her transformative new book, "Your Name is Not Anxious." In this raw and vulnerable conversation, Dr. Dowrick invites listeners to reconsider their relationship with anxiety, describing it as a "coloniser" that takes over your identity and a "liar" that distorts your perception of reality. Together, they explore how negative self-talk erodes our wellbeing and how breaking the cycle begins with a simple but profound question: "Would you speak to your best friend the way you speak to yourself?" The conversation takes a personal turn as both women share their own journeys with anxiety – Stephanie opening up about her earlier struggles with OCD and current chronic pain from stress fractures in her spine, while Jodi speaks candidly about her experience with medication. Drawing from her book, Dr. Dowrick offers practical wisdom for reclaiming power from the "robbery" of anxiety and depression through small, hopeful steps toward re-empowerment. She emphasises the importance of: Asking for help when needed Using body-soothing techniques to reduce cortisol levels Implementing guided meditation and self-hypnosis (techniques expanded upon in her book) Learning from situations where you already cope well This episode doesn't just theorise about anxiety – it offers a compassionate roadmap for those struggling to separate themselves from their anxious thoughts and rediscover their true identity beyond the limiting label of "anxious." A must-listen for anyone seeking to understand and transform their relationship with anxiety through self-compassion, insight, and hope. It's a heart-opening, deeply compelling episode about how we are all translators, “listening to the deepest voice” and how life itself is our greatest creative act. Mark S. Burrows is an award-winning poet, translator, and scholar. An historian of medieval Christianity, he is a much sought-after speaker and retreat leader in the US and Europe. He is a past president of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality and currently edits poetry for the society's journal Spiritus. “The noise that is most difficult for any of us is the noise that is inside our own heads.” – Stephanie Dowrick After years in which many of us were forced to spend more time alone, a panel of writers join Anton Enus for a profound and fascinating reflection on the pitfalls, pleasures and peace of solitude, and its powerful relationship with self-renewal, self-understanding and creativity. Christine Jackman's Turning Down The Noise: The quiet power of silence in a busy world follows her quest to strip out the constant stimuli of modern living. Donna Ward's She I Dare Not Name: A spinster's meditations on life is a memoir of living life alone in a world built for couples and families. And three decades on, Stephanie Dowrick's classic Intimacy and Solitude: Finding new closeness and self-trust in a distanced world is more timely than ever, and has been republished with new reflections on life in the pandemic. Do you enjoy your own company? Really. Do you? Many of us have been spending a lot of time alone lately due to the pandemic (unless of course, you have kids living at home, in which case you probably wish you had more time alone). We can see being alone as miserable and waste the time complaining and binge-ing, or we can see being alone as the gift of quiet time, as an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate our own company. Psychotherapist Dr. Stephanie Dowrick, in her best-selling book “Intimacy and Solitude,” calls it “welcoming time with your own self as you might welcome time with a friend.” We can also see it as a time to tap our own Innovators DNA for new, creative ideas and solutions. Listen to this webinar Joan did for Lead Up for Women on how. You'll hear: About the five components of the Innovator's DNA and why they matter How to use alone-time to tap your own creativity. Why being your own best friend matters - and is fun, and makes you a better partner, friend, boss or co-worker. Steps you can take today, and tomorrow, including for your career. "We spend so much time reacting to and being distracted by other people's ideas, agendas, stories, news and priorities...that we can lose sight of our own ideas, and of what we want. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION "Religious proselytizers who rant against sex, and the sexual libertarians who claim the right to do anything at all to their own bodies, and sometimes to other people’s as well, make strange bedfellows. But both groups demonstrate in their different ways, that they believe sexuality exists as something separate from the rest of life: as a ‘thing’ to be elevated or despised. Both are reluctant to see human beings as a unity. Separating any aspect of the human being from all other aspects, aggrandizing the physical and sexual either through fear or avidity, throws a person severely out of balance.” * As I conclude the series on Love and Sex, I will look at the unity of body, mind and spirit and how love and sex can help balance these or destroy this balance. *Stephanie Dowrick from her book 'Forgiveness & Other Acts of Love' SUBSCRIBE TO AUDIO PODCAST: VIEW ON YOUTUBE: SUBSCRIBE TO WATCH OTHER VIDEOS: GIVE A DONATION TO HELP US SPREAD THIS LOVE BEYOND BELIEF: LET'S CONNECT: Facebook: Twitter: All Souls Church Website:
