3x USA Memory Champion John Graham shares his journey of mastering memory techniques like visualization and memory palaces, and how he overcame anxiety and panic attacks. He discusses effective learning strategies such as active recall and spaced repetition, debunks the myth of fixed learning styles, and reveals his counterintuitive methods for processing suppressed emotions and regulating the nervous system. Learn how John helps high performers release anxiety for good and achieve personal growth by balancing ambition, passion, and letting go. Takeaways Memory techniques such as visualization and memory palaces can help in memorizing large amounts of information. Active recall and spaced repetition are effective learning strategies. Learning styles are not fixed, and it is important to trust one's memory and not limit oneself to a specific style. Anxiety and panic attacks can be overcome by facing and fully experiencing the emotions rather than avoiding or distracting oneself. Optimizing the nervous system and unhooking from anxious thoughts are crucial in managing anxiety. Catalyst merging can help release suppressed emotions without the need for extensive digging or therapy. Regulating the nervous system is the first step in managing emotions and finding relief from daily overwhelm and anxiety. Emotions are often triggered by past experiences, and present-day catalysts can help access and release suppressed emotions. Surrendering and letting go of control is more effective than trying to force change through techniques like meditation or mindfulness. Finding and aligning with one's passion can lead to abundance and fulfillment in life. Discover how meditation can transform your mind and reality as Thom Walters shares over 40 years of insights and practical tips. Learn to navigate stress and anxiety with mindfulness and uncover the limitless possibilities within your thoughts and beliefs.Hey friends! I'm back with my good buddy Thom to chat about how meditation can be a game-changer for mental health. Thom has been meditating for over 40 years - talk about experience! He shares how it's brought him comfort and wisdom during challenging times. In this laid-back convo, we break down how thoughts literally create our reality. The key is figuring out which thoughts are "yours" versus borrowed. Meditation helps you observe thoughts more objectively. We also discuss techniques for overcoming anxiety. By becoming more aware of your body's signals and separating your stuff from others' stuff, you can say "nope" to extra stress. Thom explains how asking the right questions extracted his pain response after stubbing his toe as a kid. Wild! Just shows the power of mindset. I share a vulnerable story about when my event prep triggered old anxiety patterns. Meditation helped me shift my state and come from the heart. The key takeaway? No matter how far you are in your practice, challenges will still pop up. Meet them with self-compassion, not judgment. Worrying is a natural human response to uncertainty. But when we allow our worries to consume our thoughts at all hours of the day, they can quickly become overwhelming. One effective strategy to manage this is by only giving yourself five minutes to worry and sulk over negative emotions. Call this your 5 minutes of worry time. Worrying is a natural part of life. We all have things that cause us stress and anxiety, whether it's work, relationships, or just the daily grind. And sometimes, it can feel overwhelming to try and push those worries away. But having a bit of time to allow ourselves to worry can also be helpful. So during your 5 minutes of “worry time,” allow yourself to think about all the things that are causing you stress. Give yourself permission to worry. By acknowledging our worries, we can better manage and control them. But once the time is up, move on to something else. Listen to this episode to learn more. Here's my interview with Daniel Andreev, CPO from PsyTech VR. He tells the story about how his company got started and how virtual reality is being used to treat various forms of mental health disorders from OCD, PTSD, to phobias of all sorts. Andreev covers lots of cool ways VR can help people work through mental health issues. Here are the big ideas: VR takes fear-facing to the next level - it's safer and feels more realistic than imagination. This works much better to treat phobias, anxiety, OCD and more. VR boosts EMDR trauma therapy through perfectly-timed sensory cues tuned to each patient. Custom relaxing VR worlds help trauma patients feel peaceful when they struggle to picture calming places. Therapists can precisely control VR scenarios to optimize treatment intensity. And I talked about the bigger applications for training our imagination for our individual health and fitness journeys. How to unlock your brain's natural antidepressants. We live in a world filled with risk. But the human brain is not good at thinking in terms of probabilities. Our fear response may not turn off until the perceived threat is completely gone. Can we find a way to adapt that doesn't involve reaching for prescription medication? Flow might be the answer. When we are in a state of flow, our brain is flooded with the neurotransmitters that are the key to a happy mind. ------------------------------------------------------------------- About Steven Kotler: Steven Kotler is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the Executive Director of the Flow Research Collective. We don't merely need the peace of God, we need the God of peace. The key to overcoming anxiety is believing that “the Lord is at hand.” But what will the Lord do when he is with us? Will he give us the money we need? Will he thwart the plans of the person who is trying to harm us? Will he spare our children from all accidents and disease? We know that at least occasionally the answer to these questions is “NO.” So then what difference does God's presence make when he offers no promises to a wield his power in the ways we would like?

If you're listening to this podcast, I'm going to assume that you either want to quit drinking or you already have. For those who want to quit drinking there are typically two camps. Those who think of themselves as alcoholics and everyone else. I got sober in a time when AA was really the only program available, and people who went were facing a serious problem. Nowadays, there are all kinds of programs that help people stop drinking no matter where they fall on the addiction spectrum. This episode will focus on the moderate or “middle lane drinkers”. And the perfect guest to talk about how to help those people is Andy Ramage. He was the co-founder of “one year no beer”, he's the author of two books: “The 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge: Sleep Better, Lose Weight, Boost Energy, Beat Anxiety” and “Let's Do This!: How to use motivational psychology to change your habits and change your life” and Founder of The Arete Way Coaching Certification Program. I have to say, Andy is different. He is special. He is so full of excitement and enthusiasm, that his energy is totally contagious. So contagious in fact that I have decided to partner with him.. There is a coaching certification program starting in October, that I myself will be participating in, so if you feel like your current career is no longer fulfilling, or you are looking to do something that is more in line with your authentic self, then check out his course. I will leave an affiliate link in the show notes at odaatchat.com. If you do decide that you'd like to get certified, I'm offering a special bonus to help you create your first coaching offer. Because after you get certified, you'll need a magnetic website that tells people how you can help. Honestly, online marketing has been one of my favorite obsessions over the last 20 years, so I got you covered! Andy's story is really amazing, he's a lot of fun and is super smart. I can't wait for you to meet him, so without further ado, please enjoy this episode with Andy. Connect with Andy here: Visit Website: Andy Ramage Coaching Subscribe So You Don't Miss New Episodes! Dr. Drew Ramsey is a board certified psychiatrist, author, and mental health advocate. He has been featured on a variety of talk shows, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He is currently an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Ramsey founded the Brain Food Clinic, which is a digital clinical practice that blends nutrition and psychiatry to provide alternative treatment options for mental health diagnosis. His book, Eat to Beat Depression and Anxiety, incorporates research on how a mindful diet can greatly decrease levels of depression and anxiety. He also serves on the advisory board for both Men's Health and the nonprofit Bring Change To Mind. In today's episode, host Shay Beider welcomes Dr. Drew Ramsey to discuss the intersection of mental health and nutrition. He defines nutritional psychiatry as the use of nutrition to optimize brain health and to treat and prevent mental health disorders. Dr. Ramsey talks about how, as a psychiatrist, he encourages choices around food to incorporate empowerment in making decisions. The two discuss some of the recent studies on incorporating various diets, including the Mediterranean diet, to greatly reduce levels of depression and anxiety. Dr. Ramsey shares his role with Men's Health magazine, and how he has worked to decrease the stigma around expressing emotions that leads men to feel they need to “man up.” Shay and Dr. Ramsey close their conversation with alternative options for mental health treatment, and the importance of finding ways to treat the symptoms that keep you from living your best life. Blair Abee is a longtime meditator from the Bay Area who went through a traumatic experience at work and was fired for being a whistle-blower. This experience prompted him to take a deep dive into his meditation practice for therapy and to start writing and journaling as a form of therapy. After writing about 150,000 words, he realized he had some material that could be useful for others and started putting his six books together on meditation, which are available on Amazon. Blair practices a meditation technique called Higher Consciousness Meditation, which bypasses the traditional mind training that comes with most meditation practices and puts him in direct contact or awareness of the all and the omnipresence of the universe. He starts his day by saying "peace be still" and then practices Higher Consciousness Meditation, acknowledging his higher self and letting his higher consciousness answer his questions. Blair also shares tips for meditation and mindfulness that he uses in his daily life. About our Guest Blair Abee Blair is an author, poet, educator, consultant and ordinary mystic. He has written award winning 5 books available on Amazon Books and dozens of articles on meditation, manifestation, and related topics. He describes himself this way, “I am an explorer who has discovered a variety of techniques, tools and ideas that I think you will find useful in your own personal development. Here's an example of what I mean. From one perspective, each of us has a unique story in which we are born, live and die as three-dimensional characters here on Planet Earth.
