In this special episode, Dr. Jodi Richardson welcomes two brilliant minds in child psychology for an in-depth conversation about supporting anxious children and their families. Join Dr. Chris McCurry, clinical child psychologist and author of "Parenting Your Anxious Child with Mindfulness and Acceptance," alongside Emma Waddington, clinician, author, and founder of Us Therapy, as they explore the vital role parents play in helping anxious children not just survive, but truly thrive. In this episode, you'll discover: How temperament shapes a child's anxiety and what parents should look for The powerful concept of "the anxiety dance" (ABC pattern) and how to re-choreograph unhelpful family patterns Practical strategies for supporting anxious children without falling into avoidance traps The importance of "coping out loud" and modeling emotional regulation for your children How to balance pushing your child to grow while honoring their temperament Why parents need to regulate themselves first and give themselves permission to take breaks Age-appropriate ways to discuss your own mental health challenges with your children The "gardener vs. carpenter" approach to parenting - helping children unfold rather than trying to mold them Chris and Emma also share details about their new story-driven workbook series "Just In Case," designed to help children ages 8-12 learn acceptance and commitment therapy techniques through engaging narratives. "What's the worst thing that can happen" is a question l've asked myself repeatedly over the years and many times it's been the single strategy that got me to say yes to things I needed to, which were often also the things that scared the metaphoric sh*t out of me. Believing that I could survive the worst-case scenario is often what got me to take a first step. Apart from that question, Dr. Jodi and I also chat about the power of delaying gratification, intelligence vs. knowledge, people who have zero fear because they have a 'broken' amygdala, the lifelong influence of our favourite school teacher, parents passing down their dysfunctional behaviours and habits to their kids and lots more. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dr. Jodi Richardson sits down with Yale and Stanford researcher Dr. Emma Seppälä to explore the profound science behind human connection and its impact on our mental wellbeing. From explaining the neurological mechanisms that make kindness feel good to debunking common misconceptions about happiness and success, this conversation offers practical wisdom backed by cutting-edge science. Discover why: True resilience stems from compassion rather than toughness Our loneliness epidemic may be more dangerous than smoking Technology is simultaneously connecting and isolating us Simple breathing techniques can rapidly calm your nervous system Compassion meditation can rewire your brain for greater wellbeing Whether you're struggling with anxiety, feeling disconnected in our digital age, or simply seeking evidence-based strategies for greater happiness, Dr. Seppälä's insights provide a roadmap to living a more connected, compassionate, and joyful life. In this gripping first installment of a two-part series, Dr. Jodi Richardson welcomes Yale and Stanford researcher Dr. Emma Seppälä, who reveals the traumatic 9/11 experience that changed her life forever. When traditional anxiety remedies failed her, a skeptical scientist discovered an ancient breathing practice that not only healed her own PTSD but would later transform the lives of war veterans who'd lost all hope. Dr. Seppälä shares how "sovereignty" - making your inside stronger than your outside - can help anyone navigate life's chaos. From witnessing the Twin Towers fall to pioneering breakthrough trauma research, her journey proves that our greatest potential often emerges from our darkest moments. The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Dr. Richardson's own anxiety surfaces during recording, leading to a powerful demonstration of the breathing techniques being discussed. Listen to discover the science behind reclaiming your inner power, how a simple 40-day practice changed everything, and why self-compassion outperforms self-criticism in every metric. Just as the story reaches its most profound revelation, we pause... leaving you breathless for Part 2. Don't miss the conclusion where Dr. Seppälä' will reveal the extraordinary story of her friend Etel's unimaginable trauma and remarkable transformation through sovereignty. In some ways, Dr. Jodi and I are peas in a metaphoric pod. We've both had our battles with food, exercise, weight, body image, self-esteem, self-worth, eating issues and all the psychological, emotional and sociological stuff that intersects with the 'body' stuff. As is often the way on TYP, this conversation was not the one we intended to have, going in. Fortunately, I think it was better. Dr. Jodi Richardson continues her illuminating conversation with psychologist Jodie Wassner, diving into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and its transformative approach for families navigating childhood anxiety. What you'll learn: Why building connection and understanding must precede cognitive work with anxious children How to use the powerful ACT question: "Is that just something your mind is telling you?" Practical strategies for helping both parents and children tolerate uncertainty The step-by-step process of moving from empathetic understanding to helpful cognitive techniques Standout moment: "Parents often rush to fix their child's anxiety, but Jodie explains why spending months truly understanding your child creates the foundation for all effective intervention work." Who this episode is for: Parents supporting anxious children, educators working with anxious students, therapists interested in ACT approaches, and anyone seeking to understand psychological flexibility in managing anxiety. In this insightful episode, Dr. Jodi Richardson sits down with Jodie (Jordana) Wassner, a neuro-affirming Educational and Developmental Psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with young people and their families across Melbourne and Sydney. Drawing from both her professional expertise and personal lived experience with neurodivergence, Jodie shares her unique approach to supporting neurodivergent youth through radical acceptance and values-based strategies. As an author, speaker, and clinician who divides her time between direct client work and educational training for professionals and families worldwide, Jodie brings a wealth of practical wisdom to this conversation. The discussion takes a refreshing turn when addressing social challenges for young people with autism. Rather than prescribing generic social skills training, Jodie explains her values-first approach—helping neurodivergent youth define what meaningful friendship looks like specifically for them before determining steps toward connection. This personalised method honours individual differences while providing practical pathways to fulfilling relationships. Listeners will appreciate Jodie's candid exploration of "worry habits" and her perspective that anxiety isn't something to eliminate but rather to understand and accommodate. She challenges traditional symptom-reduction approaches to stress, instead offering tools to help young people recognise their specific anxiety patterns and develop sustainable coping strategies. Throughout the episode, Jodie weaves together insights from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with her extensive experience supporting autism and attention differences, creating a compassionate framework for parents, educators, and clinicians supporting neurodivergent youth. Whether you're a parent seeking to better understand your neurodivergent child, a professional working with diverse young people, or someone interested in progressive approaches to mental health, this conversation offers valuable perspectives on embracing neurodiversity while building meaningful lives. Join Dr. Jodi Richardson in this powerful and deeply moving episode as she welcomes acclaimed author and psychotherapist Dr. Stephanie Dowrick to discuss her transformative new book, "Your Name is Not Anxious." In this raw and vulnerable conversation, Dr. Dowrick invites listeners to reconsider their relationship with anxiety, describing it as a "coloniser" that takes over your identity and a "liar" that distorts your perception of reality. Together, they explore how negative self-talk erodes our wellbeing and how breaking the cycle begins with a simple but profound question: "Would you speak to your best friend the way you speak to yourself?" The conversation takes a personal turn as both women share their own journeys with anxiety – Stephanie opening up about her earlier struggles with OCD and current chronic pain from stress fractures in her spine, while Jodi speaks candidly about her experience with medication. Drawing from her book, Dr. Dowrick offers practical wisdom for reclaiming power from the "robbery" of anxiety and depression through small, hopeful steps toward re-empowerment. She emphasises the importance of: Asking for help when needed Using body-soothing techniques to reduce cortisol levels Implementing guided meditation and self-hypnosis (techniques expanded upon in her book) Learning from situations where you already cope well This episode doesn't just theorise about anxiety – it offers a compassionate roadmap for those struggling to separate themselves from their anxious thoughts and rediscover their true identity beyond the limiting label of "anxious." In Exercise Science there's a concept (tool, scale) that's used to assess how hard a person thinks they're working (1-10) based on their capacity, with 10 being their (perceived) absolute physical limit. It's called the 'Rate of Perceived Exertion' (RPE) scale. It's a subjective self-assessment (which makes it makes it more science-ish, than hard science) but nonetheless, I'm always interested in how hard people 'think' they're working (or perhaps, how much of their potential they think they're using) in the gym, but also outside the gym. In life. In this TYP extravaganza, Dr. Jodi (who has a PhD. in Exercise Physiology) and I do a deep dive around this concept (and lots more).drjodirichardson.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Or perhaps you feel those tell-tale signs in your physiology and notice the changes in your thinking when an opportunity comes your way, you're ready to get started on bringing a dream to life or maybe whenever you decide you want to speak up about something you're passionate about. This is part one of a three-part series with parents Leigh and Pierre. Leigh is from the US and Pierre is from France, and they moved their family from France to the states one year ago. They have two children - almost 5 yr old Jean and 2 year old Nina. However, they came to Leslie to talk about Jean who is not speaking outside of her immediate family. Over time, Leigh and Pierre have heard the diagnosis “selective mutism” and have made changes accordingly, but they're still struggling with what they should do. In this episode Leslie walks Leigh and Pierre through an assessment of why a child might be selectively speaking. While there are lots of causes, they mostly boil down to vulnerability. Is Jean stressing about her learning two languages at once? Struggling with perfectionism? Or Is she not feeling safe when she's out in the world?
