The Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond podcast is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in sailing and cruising. Hosted by Franz, the podcast offers a great blend of interviews and monologues, covering areas that are of interest to sailors. The interviews are well thought out, with guests given ample time to answer questions thoroughly. Franz's interviewing style is pleasant and he has a soothing voice that makes for an enjoyable listening experience.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the variety of topics covered. From idyllic sailing destinations in the Mediterranean to boat maintenance and repair tips, there is something for everyone. Each episode offers valuable knowledge and often points listeners in the direction of further research. The relaxed free-flowing style, combined with Franz's own stories and experiences, adds a personal touch that sets this podcast apart.

One potential downside to the podcast is that some listeners might not appreciate Franz's occasional rants against the European Union. While it may not be bothersome for everyone, it can be a detractor for those looking solely for sailing-related content.

Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 290 Interview with Matthew Bracken Version 1.0.0 From Navy SEAL to Novelist and Bluewater Sailor: Meet Matthew Bracken In this episode of the podcast, we welcome Matthew Bracken—a man whose life reads like an adventure novel. A former Navy SEAL and lifelong sailor, Bracken is best known for his action-packed political thrillers that blend real-world tensions with gripping, character-driven plots. But what truly sets him apart is his deep connection to the sea. After serving in the Navy, Bracken didn't just settle into civilian life—he sailed off into it. He spent years living aboard and voyaging across oceans on his own sailboat. His time at sea gave him a firsthand look at self-reliance, freedom, and the raw edge of adventure. These themes echo powerfully throughout his fiction. Matthew Bracken's Books 1. Enemies Foreign and Domestic (2003)The first in the Enemies trilogy. A rogue federal agent stages a mass shooting to justify draconian gun laws. A retired SEAL and a sharp-eyed journalist race to uncover the truth. It's a chilling tale of government overreach and personal courage. 2. Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista (2006)Set in a fractured near-future America, the story imagines the Southwest under separatist control. With borders dissolving and loyalties shifting, Bracken explores nationalism, identity, and civil conflict. 3. Foreign Enemies and Traitors (2009)The trilogy concludes with the rise of a tyrannical president who invites foreign troops onto U.S. soil. Resistance forces fight back in a gripping climax of betrayal, bravery, and rebellion. 4. Castigo Cay (2011)A true sailor's thriller. Dan Kilmer, a former Marine turned outlaw sailor, becomes involved in rescuing a kidnapped girl from a Caribbean crime cartel. This one draws heavily on Bracken's own sailing experiences—and it shows. 5. The Red Cliffs of Zerhoun (2016)A group of Americans is kidnapped by jihadists in North Africa. With strong echoes of historical captivity narratives, this story blends action, cultural conflict, and survival. 6. The Bracken Collection: Essays and Short Fiction (2019)A mix of political essays, short stories, and thought experiments—this collection offers a look into Bracken's worldview beyond the world of fiction. 7. Doomsday Reef (2020)Bracken returns to nautical action in this maritime adventure set in the South China Sea. With rising international tensions and a cast of rogue seafarers, it's a modern-day pirate story laced with geopolitics.

Andrews Website http://www.sailgeja.com Andrew Vic: A Journey on the High Seas Andrew, a San Francisco native of Scandinavian descent, has always had a deep connection to the water. Born and raised in a city surrounded by the stunning expanse of the Pacific Ocean, it was only natural that he would find himself drawn to a life at sea. His maritime adventures began in the early 2000s, when he embarked on a sailing journey that would shape the course of his life. In the year 2000, Andrew took his first steps into the world of sailing on the iconic San Francisco Bay. With its gusty winds and challenging currents, the bay provided the perfect training ground for a budding sailor. Andrew quickly became adept at navigating the often turbulent waters of this picturesque location, honing his skills and fostering a love for the open sea. As the years passed, Andrew's passion for sailing grew, and he sought to explore new horizons. During recent summers, he took command of the Geja, a vessel that would become his trusted companion on a remarkable journey. Setting sail from the Bay Area, he embarked on a maritime odyssey that covered over 12,000 nautical miles of Mediterranean waters. His voyage took him along the coasts of some of Europe's most enchanting countries, including Italy, France, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Albania, and Greece. Each destination offered its own unique blend of culture, history, and breathtaking landscapes, making the journey an unforgettable experience. While the Mediterranean served as Andrew's primary playground, he didn't limit his adventures to this region alone. He expanded his horizons and explored the waters of Mexico, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, the U.S. East Coast, the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and even ventured to the exotic paradise of French Polynesia. His thirst for adventure knew no bounds. In late 2018, Andrew achieved a significant milestone in his sailing career. He joined the crew of an Amel 54 and set sail from the Canary Islands, embarking on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean. This transatlantic journey marked a pivotal moment in his maritime endeavors, proving that he had the skill and courage to navigate the ocean. Andrew's dedication to sailing and his commitment to safety are evident in his achievement of a United States Coast Guard Mariners License. This certification is a testament to his expertise and his ability to operate vessels with the utmost responsibility. Andrew's journey from a San Francisco native with Scandinavian roots to an experienced sailor with thousands of nautical miles under his belt is a testament to the enduring allure of the sea. His adventures across the world's oceans have not only shaped his life but have also allowed him to forge a deep connection with the maritime world. As he continues to explore new waters and embark on fresh adventures, one thing remains certain: Andrew's love for the sea is unwavering, and the call of the open ocean will always beckon him to new horizons. My journey began as a dive instructor, traveling the world and cultivating a deep appreciation for the ocean. Subsequently, I transitioned into becoming a yacht captain and marine engineer, a path that has been incredibly fulfilling and enriching. Currently, I serve as the Captain of Twin Flame, a Lagoon 77 catamaran based in the Caribbean. Our charter experiences focus on luxury adventure, blending elements of foiling, SCUBA diving, and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. Through innovative partnerships and a shared vision with the owners, we've redefined the Caribbean Charter Yacht experience, prioritizing environmental connection and sustainable practices. In addition to my role as a yacht captain, I'm also the founder of Revive Water Systems, where we specialize in post-RO watermaker treatment. Our system transforms stripped product water into mineral-rich, alkaline water, promoting maximum hydration and eliminating the need for plastic water bottles onboard. This endeavor stems from my firsthand experience recognizing the necessity for remineralization in combating the detrimental effects of consuming desalinated water over the long term. I believe that the intersection of my experiences as a yacht captain and marine engineer, coupled with my entrepreneurial journey with Revive Water Systems, offers a unique perspective that would resonate with your audience. I'm eager to discuss topics such as: The development of innovative marine systems and scaling a business within the industry. The health benefits of incorporating a Revive Water System onboard and its synergy with RO Desalinators/Watermakers. Insights into running a large catamaran in the Caribbean and crafting a distinctive charter experience. Exploring the breathtaking adventures and favorite cruising grounds of the Caribbean. Sailing with Norman Jewison: A Memorable Adventure I want to share some memories I have about my time sailing with Norman Jewison. Norman Jewison was a remarkable man whose life and achievements left an indelible mark on me and those around him. Though my interactions with Norman Jewison, and his at the time girlfriend, Lynn St David were primarily through our shared pleasures of skiing and sailing, I always held great admiration for Norman's illustrious career. His contributions to the film industry were unparalleled, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. The news of his passing on January 22, 2024 at the age of 97 has caused me to reflect and reminisce about the time we spent together. The first time, in the year 2000, after he received the DeBeers Diamond award at the Taormina Film Festival for his Film Jesus Christ Superstar. When Lynn and he arrived at the boat In Puerto Rosa in Northern Sicily, I can only imagine what Lynn thought she  saw my boat. I don't think it is what Lynn was expecting. However, Lynn was a trooper and made the best of what I'm sure she thought was a terrible situation. We proceeded to have the worst weather of any one week that I've spent in the Mediterranean with guests. It could not have been worse. That first night on the island of Volcano, it was flat calm when we anchored then after the sun went down the wind came up, and up, and up, and that quiet safe anchorage became a dangerous lee shore. I decided it would be more dangerous to try and move the boat in the night, so I decided I had better keep an anchor watch. The boat was rocking and bucking all night long, I couldn't imagine that Lynn and Norman Jewison were able to sleep up in the forward berth. The boat next to us dragged its anchor, and I watched it slowly move downwind and ended up on shore. The next morning the wind died to nothing again, and then we went and enjoyed the mud baths. My skin stank for weeks, smelling of the sulfur mud after that no matter how much I went swimming. Then we sailed around the island of Lipari and tied up on the uncomfortable, surging concrete quay in the city of Lipari that next night. Then the weather started to deteriorate again, and we were stuck there for several days. We were bored just sitting around the harbor, so on July 12th, 2000, we rented scooters to drive around the island, that was my birthday and we stopped at that little restaurant in the middle of the island. Lynn and Norman bought me lunch as a celebration, and then we decided to turn around and go see some caves. In turning around the scooter, the clutch grabbed and accelerated into the rock wall lining the road. I was so worried about Lynn two, but Norman Jewison was just sitting there on the pavement with a bloody arm laughing. What a great sense of humor! To top off the evening after supper, Lynn fell into the water when it was dark while trying to get on the boat in that surging harbor. Lynn could have easily been seriously hurt, but fortunately, Lynn just got wet, and a bit pissed off. Finally, the weather broke, and I thought I had a weather window to go enjoy some of the other islands, so we sailed on up to the island of Panarea. Again, in the middle of the night, the weather came up, and we were in a dangerous lee shore situation, again... Norman took the helm well I brought up the anchor, in the process we were swinging back and forth coming very close to bumping into another boat at anchor who was also dealing with the same wind and trying to get out of there. So back to Lipari we go. This time it was very difficult to find an anchorage because it was so deep and so many other boats had run for shelter, we finally tucked back into a corner with a lot of chain out in order to hold the boat in the strong winds. I think we were there for two or three nights and one day we all got off the boat, Lynn and Norman went one way,

Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 278 Chris Ryba of S/Y Olivia Grace   This is from the great website Chris put together to record this voyage: https://oliviagrace.travel.blog/home-page/ This voyage began in 2015 when I sent Joy a text message: “Just an idea… what do you think of taking a 6-month sabbatical?” I also sent a link to Sailing Totem (https://www.sailingtotem.com/welcome-aboard). Fully expecting a quick dismissal, I was floored upon receipt of her response, “that sounds awesome. Lets do it.” A few days later, Jimmy Cornell's treatises, which detail world cruising routes and destinations, arrived via Amazon and we were “off to the races.” Since that time, countless hours have been spent planning and preparing. From the big issues, (e.g., money, home, safety and education) to the small, (mail, lawn care, snow removal), we've done our best to ensure a safe and seamless transition to a “voyaging lifestyle,” albeit a temporary one. From 2015 through 2020, on any given night our dining room table was covered in nautical charts, cruising guides and nautical almanacs. Winters were spent at Larsen Marine in Waukegan partially refitting the boat for extended cruising. Broad information on the refit is detailed under “Our Vessel” and blog entry “Outfitting for 2020 Sabbatical.” We broke the news to the girls in 2017 and received a mixed response. Frankly, neither of them is excited about this. And, admittedly, our anticipated track is a long one. Of the two, Frankie—who spends 5 days per week sailing Optis during the summer—is more resistant, but mostly because she does not want to leave the dog. Evelyn, on the other hand, is largely ambivalent. But given the choice, it is clear that Evelyn (13 at the time of cast-off) would rather be with her friends and electronics than with her parents and sister aboard a small sailboat. From my perspective, that's all the more reason to go and go now......"               Please Consider supporting the podcast in Patreon   My Boat is for sale here are the details!   See Dream at anchor in Turkey near Gocek If you have ideas for future podcasts or comments please drop me a note! and PLEASE rate my podcast in iTunes and perhaps write a note. link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sailing-in-the-mediterranean/id566678892?mt=2 https://www.medsailor.com/ If you're interested in my sailing instructional audio series here are the links: Sailing! Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 276 Jon Bilger founder of PredictWind Jon Bilger  Bio: One might say the seas are in PredictWind Founding Director Jon Bilger's genes. The son of a triple Olympian sailor, Jon set sail at the age of eight, traveling with his father to attend regattas around the world. Jon carried the family legacy forward, sailing on to become an Olympian in his own rite as well as a two-time America's Cup winner and New Zealand National Champion in multiple classes.   As a lifelong competitive yachtsman, Jon knows how dangerous sudden weather changes can be. A seemingly benign thunderstorm event forced Jon and his crew to sail with a jury-rigged broken mast for the final 10 days of a Transpacific race, underscoring the importance of reliable, accurate, and remotely accessible weather forecasting. After spending 10-years on the America's Cup scene, including serving as Weather Team Manager for the Swiss team and Navigator for the TAG Heuer team and utilizing the best forecasting technology in the industry, Jon was determined to make this private technology available to the public at large to help prevent dangerous, potentially life-threatening situations at sea.   PredictWind is a passion project driven by Jon's desire to keep sailors of all ilks as safe and prepared as possible. Thirteen years in the making, PredictWind provides the most accurate and reliable wind and marine forecasting tools available, at a price every seaman can afford. Today PredictWind serves nearly a million users and Jon considers his company the lighthouse keeper of the world, offering accurate forecasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to anywhere on the planet.   Jon holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Auckland. When he's not working, you'll find him wind foiling, kite foiling, or wing foiling with his wife and two daughters.  https://www.predictwind.com/   Please Consider supporting the podcast in Patreon If you have ideas for future podcasts or comments please drop me a note! and PLEASE rate my podcast in iTunes and perhaps write a note. link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sailing-in-the-mediterranean/id566678892?mt=2 https://www.medsailor.com/ If you're interested in my sailing instructional audio series here are the links: Sailing! I had cards printed up before I even owned a camera.  Started out working for the music press and ended up working for The Evening Standard, London's newspaper, but I slowly slipped back into the music industry and ended up directing a bunch of live concert videos. Then I got invited to do a couple of jobs in Los Angeles and fell in love with the place ….. so I stayed ….. for 27 years. I returned to the UK to look after my elderly mother, after she had floated off into the ether, I had some choices to make. To be honest, I didn't see a great future in the slowly declining United Kingdom, so I bought a boat and headed south. I wasn't even sure where I was aiming for, but Malta kept creeping into the conversation. After researching this it appears to be a common problem YOU CANNOT INSTALL THE COPPER SEALING WASHERS ON THE BANJO BOLTS  CORRECTLY GRAVITY PREVENTS THE COPPER WASHERS FROM SEATING INTO THE MACHINED GROVES, THE SOLUTION FOR THIS IS TO GET SPECIAL WASHERS THAT HAVE SOME SORT OF RUBBER COATING THAT ALLOWS THEM TO SEAT WITHOUT BEING ALIGNED INTO THE GROVES!!! I started a career in YouTube at the age of 21 years old with a backpack and $1,000. After 6 months in South America I converted a van in order to begin my travels in North America. About 2 years ago I moved to the Mediterranean and bought a sailboat with only 7 days of sailing experience. I have since sailed from Spain to Croatia, all the way into the Black Sea and all the way down to Tunisia, where I am currently living aboard on my 1939 Morgan 382 sailing boat, The Arianrhod, until the borders reopen. My life choices and professional journey have been called anything from risky to unconventional but FLORB is now a full-fledged, reputable film production company based in Los Angeles, California. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! Dylan Dylan Magaster flew to South America at the age of 21 with only $1,000 in the bank and his camera gear. He backpacked for 6 months, converted a van, and began creating influential short documentaries showcasing Alternative Living. After nearly two years in a van, Dylan decided to move to the Mediterranean in pursuit of adventure. With only 7 days of sailing experience, he bought a 1979 Morgan 382 sailing boat and has since been living aboard The Arianrhod. Currently, he has sailed over 6,000 nautical miles to 3 different continents. He has traveled to 27 countries thus far while sharing countless inspiring stories of Alternative Living. Dylan's main passions are Adventure, Storytelling, and Sustainable Living. Now, he is the CEO of FLORB, a successful film production company based in Los Angeles, California, USA. This is the second part of a two part interview with Captain Skip Strong and Twain Braden of: In Peril: A Daring Decision, a Captain's Resolve, and the Salvage that Made History When Skip Strong, the thirty-two-year-old Captain of the 688-foot oil tanker Cherry Valley received the call, all he knew was that an ocean going tug with five men aboard was in distress off Florida's east coast. Caught in an unusually powerful storm, the tug's engines failed, and as the winds gusted to more than sixty miles per hour and the sea whipped into a frenzy, the tug--and the barge it was towing-- were in danger of being swept ashore. Captain Strong also knew that he would follow the age-old tradition of sea rescue. Coming to the aid of the crew, the tug, and its cargo, he would have to maneuver his ship--laden with 10 million gallons of oil-- in extremely hazardous conditions. One mistake and Strong would be responsible for an ecological disaster on Florida's beaches equal to that of the Exxon Valdez. What Captain Strong didn't know was that the tug was carrying a 150-foot aluminum fuel cell worth upwards of $50 million. And that in the instant he decided to rescue the tug and its crew, he was opening the door on a dramatic and tense legal struggle that would pit him against the United States Government for salvage rights. I is hard to believe but it's been almost 2 years since I last talked with my sailing acquaintance Jules Dusek. So in this  episode I catch up on him and his travels through the French canals. In 2013 he and his wife he did the Canal De Bourgogne. This is a slightly-used canal in France which requires a boat with the shallower draft. Fortunately his boat has a drop keel which allowed him to go through this delightful canal. Jules is a member of the cruising Association and he suggests that American sailors heading over to the Mediterranean would benefit greatly by joining this organization. The link to this organization is: http://www.theca.org.uk/home Jules has kindly given me for free distributions to whoever might be of interest to his notes from sailing the Canal du Bourgogne. You can find it at the website but here is a quick link: French Canal De Bourgogne on SY Pluto I got an e-mail from Dan Culpepper he is about to head out into the Mediterranean for a transatlantic voyage and has set up a webpage if you would like to follow Dan's voyage in his posts here part of what he wrote me and a link to their new website: "...We are 2 weeks away from the first leg of our adventure and things are starting to finally come together. The electrical system from batteries to a new Charger/ inverter and a couple of solar panel (strongly attached to the aft davits) have been beefed up. We now have 980 amps in the house bank, 105 amps for the starter, 398 amps for the cockpit winches and 210 amps forward for the bow thruster and windlass. They can now be charged by either shore power, 75 hp. Yanmar main engine, 8 kW generator and/or 200 watts of solar panels. I especially like the solar panels and will be adding more in the future. 3 new air conditioners have been installed and on a recent 72 degree day I was able to recreate out lousy, rotten, freezing winter by cranking the units up and chilling below decks. Hope it will be the same in Morocco... New Sails by Doyle, new running rigging, spare parts, review of all safety gear from Go Bag to Vests, tethers, Padeyes and MOB pole setup. The crew has been set for awhile now. We will be 4 to Bermuda, 4 to the Azores and 5 to Gibraltar. The best part is that my father will be joining us in Bermuda for the rest of the crossing (he did the Newport- Bermuda Race with me in 2008). Also my sister (experienced sailor) will join in the Azores. We will have a Website (kids continue to drag me into the 21st century) called: sailingheldeleine.com ©2015 Franz Amussen all rights reserved Would you like Franz to be a speaker at your Sailing Club or fund raiser? For over 30 years we have been producing the highest quality of model sailboats, toy sailboats, and Radio Controlled model sailing boats in the world. Over 70,000 Tippecanoe model sailboats are sailing in more than 65 countries. No other company produces the fine sailing and traditionally elegant boats that are the hallmark of Tippecanoe Boats. We believe that every boat that leaves our shop in Washington State should be a boat we would be proud to own ourselves. Every boat should sail beautifully, fast, and provide hours of fun and excitement." .... https://youtu.be/un58YTMbCik Will called after the interview and corrected himself , to get magnetic from true north in the Atlantic you start with true then add the magnetic variation to get the magnetic course. The pandemic quickly derailed those plans, bringing them instead to the very cold climate of the North Atlantic as they retraced the original Viking's route, sailing from the United States, Newfoundland, Greenland, across the North Atlantic to Scotland.  Scuba diving was put on hold for some epic sailing in some of the prettiest fjords on this Earth. A Desire to experience | learn | connect When the journey began, Darren and Amanda understood sailing as a mere means to travel adventurously.  However, somewhere in those thousands of miles sailed, they fell deeply in love with sailing.  Travel became more about the journey than the destination. Now enter Outer Passage, an opportunity to connect, share, and explore WITH other like-minded adventurers.  Not only does the journey continue, but with Outer Passage, the sailing continues with YOU aboard one of the best performance cruising multihulls, the NEEL 45 Trimaran.  The interior comfort combined with a fast cruising yacht makes for a unique and unforgettable sailing experience. The Five-Year Voyage: Exploring Latin American Coasts and Rivers Here is a link to the 5 year Voyage This is from the Amazon description; "From the author of Three Years in a 12-Foot Boat comes an expedition of even grander scope, this time with Ginny, his brave sweetheart. Together they fashion a tiny craft in which they row and sail from Florida to the Caribbean along the coast of Central and South America. Though storm-battered and robbed at knife-point, they ascend the Orinoco River to a remote steam connecting with the Amazon. They descend this to Manaus, then climb another tributary south through Bolivia. After a portage they transit the world's largest swamp, then float down the Paraguay to Argentina. Returning via other rivers, they pause to have a son. Steve sails homeward alone to safeguard baby George, but shipwrecks in surf. Written with humor and keen observation, this is the honest account of an unprecedented odyssey."   Want me to go sailing with you? Then contact me!
