In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes fifty-seven through fifty-nine of Fruits Basket (2019)! In episode fifty-seven, we learn about Ren and Akira's love story, and the terrible way Ren treated Akito as a child. When Akira dies, a maid gives Akito a box “containing Akira's soul”. Ren, unaware of what is inside the box, violently attacks Akito to take it from her. Kureno tries to console Akito after another zodiac bond breaks, assuring her she can start over. Akito hurts Kureno in response. In episode fifty-eight, Kyo and Tohru have a difficult conversation about her feelings for him and his past relationship with Kyoko, including him being at the site of her fatal accident. In episode fifty-nine, Tohru helps Akito decide to start over, only to fall from a dangerous height as the ground below her crumbles beneath her feet. Kyo breaks down at the sight of her injuries. In episode sixty, Akito apologizes to Uo for stabbing Kureno, who shows her compassion. Uo and Kureno talk about the future. Yuki and Kyo fight, finally telling one another how they truly feel about each other. Kyo visits his father, who is cruel to him, blaming him for his mother's death. In episode fifty-four, Rin is missing, causing concern among the younger zodiacs. Hiro tearfully tells Hatsuharu and Kisa the truth about why Akito hurt Rin and Kisa. As a result, Haru confronts Akito. Kureno has Rin taken to the hospital, where she later escapes, and collapses on the street. Haru comes to her aid. In episode fifty-five, Momiji has a growth spurt that takes everyone by surprise. He urges Kyo to not give up on Tohru, or else he might swoop in. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, Momiji's bond severs, bringing his future into his own hands for the first time. In episode forty-seven, Yuki and Manabe discuss Tohru and the nature of Yuki's feelings towards her. Tohru's class decides to rewrite Cinderella to fit their odd casting choices. In episode forty-eight, it's showtime! Cinderella-ish is a hilarious success, despite an out of character outburst from Tohru at the end of the show, causing Kyo to wonder about her true feelings towards him. In episode forty-nine, Yuki makes sure to include Machi in the student council's plans to celebrate the end of the school year together. It's also time for the New Year's banquet at the Sohma estate, which results in an unsettling exchange between Akito and Yuki around forgiveness of one another. Tohru spends the holiday with Kyo, Kazuma, and Rin at Kazuma's dojo. Tohru's wish for the new year is for the Sohma's curse to be broken. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana, Chika, and Clarissa of the Anime World Order podcast review episodes forty-one through forty-three of Fruits Basket (2019)! In episode forty-one, Tohru visits the Sohma estate to talk to Kureno on Uo's behalf. By happenstance, she meets Momo, who is fascinated by Momiji and hopes Tohru can convince him to be her big brother. When Tohru speaks with Kureno, he vows to never speak to Uo again. In episode forty-two, it's time for Tohru's class trip to Kyoto! Romantic shenanigans are abound, while Tohru and Yuki find souvenirs to bring home. Yuki muses over the positive impact Tohru has had on his life and silently offers her gratitude. Kyo and Tohru spend some time alone. In episode forty-three, we learn about Rin and her difficult childhood, which culminated in her parents abandoning her in her teen years. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes thirty-eight through forty of Fruits Basket (2019)! In episode thirty-eight, Yuki meets new members of his student council. Kakeru Manabe and Yuki have an argument after school when Manabe asks Yuki regarding his feelings about Tohru. The boys have a heart-to-heart conversation, which breaks up the tension between them. In episode thirty-nine, Shigure steps in for Tohru's parent-teacher conference when she learns her grandfather won't be able to attend. Yuki contemplates inviting his own parents to the conference. Hatsuharu and Rin finally reunite. In episode forty, at parent-teacher conferences, Ayame arrives to help Yuki through the very uncomfortable meeting with his mother.
