A delightful, (relatively) standalone novel in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, Small Gods tells the story of a god who finds himself in the body of a one-eyed tortoise, seeking the help of a true believer. It's a quest story, but also one that tells a story of power, humanism and philosophy - all while being laugh out loud funny. Dr Murallitharan Munisamy joins us for this month's book club, and stays on to chat in our Footnotes about other books that also tackle and highlight philosophical matters.
Welcome back to another episode of the Online Warriors Podcast! We've got a ton of news to talk about this week so let's get into it: - The Last of Us 2 leak spoils the plot of the game (no spoilers in our discussion though), as the game gets a new release date (1:52) - Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is getting a television adaptation (19:12) - The Pentagon releases official footage of UFOs (28:32) After our news coverage, we go more hands on and cover what the crew has been up to the last week. - Techtic plans for an at-home haircut and finishes up "Going After Cacciato" (38:17) - Nerdbomber improves her Animal Cross island, reads the "Crazy Rich Asian" trilogy, and starts Crash Team Racing (44:05) - Illeagle finally gets his hands on a Nintendo Switch at MSRP (48:09) Unfortunately, Fantasy Movie League as a whole is on hold due to current events that have results in movie delays and theater closures. But, we still have our trivia! This week, we're getting down and (not) dirty with some detergent trivia! Who will be the squeaky clean champ? And on today’s Dark enigma we’re going to try to pull ourselves out of the slump caused by the anticlimactic ending of Game of Thrones… don’t worry; if you haven’t seen it, there are no spoilers here. But today, we propose the question… are Dragons real, could they be? But before we jump into the darkness of today’s topic, we have a little business to address first. That’s right, we will be playing our drinking game; and remember, the drinking game is only for those that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. A little homework for today’s episode, there is a drink out there called Dragon’s blood which comes regular and flaming, so your mission… if you choose to accept it, is to find the recipe… make many, many, many of them and drink as much as you can stand. This podcast will self-destruct at the end. Kidding. Alright, so every time I say dragon it’s a single shot and every time I say Christianity, that’s a double shot. Now that we have the business end out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and be warned… There be dragons here… One very prevalent fixture of fairy tales and modern fantasy films and fiction is the all-powerful presence of the mighty dragon. Immense, unstoppable, and truly terrifying, these terrible lizards are like something out of a nightmare, and one may feel comforted to believe they exist only in the world of the imagination. Or do they? For centuries there have been numerous accounts that treat these fierce monsters as very real, and from back in the dark corners of time all the way up to the present there are those who claim that the dragons of lore are much more than just legend and myth. Now, no mythological creature is more varied than the dragon. From the compound-eyed, alien dragons of Anne McCaffery's Pern series to the chronically ill swamp dragons of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, dragons have been invented and reinvented countless times in popular fiction. It’s almost impossible to pin down traits that every fictional dragon shares with others—just look at the diversity of form that exists in the How To Train Your Dragon movies alone. But do any of these dragons have real-life counterparts in the animal kingdom? Dragons may not exist exactly as we know them from shows like Game of Thrones, but have any non-fictional creatures ever demonstrated distinctly draconic features?
Episode 138: Streetwalkers, Courtesans and Companions - The World's Oldest Profession in Speculative Fiction Many sci-fi and fantasy worlds have incorporated their version of the sex industry into their world building. From the highly sought and exquisite companion to the lowly street walker trying to scape enough credits together to get off world, prostitution is rife in SFF. So is this a good thing, reclaiming sex and sex positivity? Is it exploitative, perpetuating bad steriotypes and encoraging a mindset of permissiveness toward the ill treatment of sex workers? Or is it merely a snapshot of life and human nature, falling into neither the positive or negative? This week the dragons delve into the sometimes seedy world of the SFF sex industry. On the slab this week - Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, Terry Pratchett's Discworld, Firefly, The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora pierce and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Steve watch Ridley Scott's The Fifth Elephant with Harrison Ford as Vimes, Rutgar Hauer as Wolfgang and, eh, Imelda Staunton as Lady Margolotta. Well, not quite, but have a listen and you'll see what we're getting at here. We went to Uberwald expecting fat and uncovered a gem instead.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Supernatural foes are trying to take over the kingdom and Granny Weatherwax is starting to doubt herself! Sound familiar? Colm and Steve take in the last hurrah of the Lancre Witches, discussing its similarities and differences to the mighty Lords and Ladies, and how it follows on from Small Gods with the decidedly, deliberately un-mighty Mightily Oats.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Steve and Colm take a trip down under (not exactly possible on the Disc unless you want to end up on an elephant's back, but bear with us) and discuss the last hurrah of the Discworld's first protagonist. They wonder why Rincewind is so dense here, whether the Faculty could be the book's protagonists, and how they can bend their minds around the distorted geography and history of XXXX.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Radio Morpork returns from its post-Hogswatch slumbers and wakes up to war! Colm and Steve discuss how this book feels like a bit of an oddity within the Watch continuity, how Pratchett handles intra-human culture clash in a world previously known for inter-species conflict, and what their alternate selves are doing after they pick up a zoom recorder from an alternate dimension.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the Earth were flat and also being carried by four gigantic elephants who were all standing on the back of a giant space turtle? Us too! Which is why Terry Pratchett's Discworld series remains relevant 35 years after its inception in this week's book, The Colour of Magic.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Happy Hogswatch, one and all! In honour of the occasion, Steve and Colm are joined by their old friend, Rose to talk about the dark roots that run beneath the blossoming Yuletide cheer, and how Pratchett shines a light on them with characteristic aplomb. They also discuss best and worst Discworld villains (hint: one of the best ones was in this book), their childhood fears and why humans need fantasy.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Steve and Colm join the City Watch for their third outing, wherein there's a conspiracy to oust the Patrician in favour of a puppet king... again. Is Pratchett re-visiting this plot a good thing? Listen and find out! You'll also get a rambling discussion on trans-gender, trans-humanism and trans-legal justice (and Colm ranting about Oliver Cromwell a bit).
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Steve and Colm join the Lancre Witches as they journey to Ankh-Morpork to explore the curious and contrary world of opera. They (the hosts, not the Witches) discuss how Pratchett handled the tricky business of returning to Granny and Nanny after the climatic brilliance of Lords & Ladies, how body image and confidence are explored through Agnes/Perdita, and the tantalising tease of a Witches/Watch crossover!
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm & Steve travel to the Aurient to tackle Rincewind's return in Interesting Times. They ramble on about legacy, colonialism, revolution and an absolutely epic finale. They've reached the stage in the series where there's a lot of comparing Discworld books with Discworld books (and also the point where they fawn over the UU Faculty and Twoflower a lot).
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm & Steve rock (and/or roll) out with a rambling discussion about grief, rebellion, growing up, and the opposition between art and commerce. There's also much chuckling over music references and and occasional bad impressions of the voice actors from the animated adaptation.
How does one map onto our world a fantasy world that rides around on the back of a turtle, where there is no London or England - or, to be more precise, where those places exist, but only in a magicless round world that’s kept in a glass sphere at Unseen University? I went to the HisWorld exhibition at the Salisbury Museum to find out.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Steve return to the streets of Ankh-Morpork to discuss the second installment of the City Watch sub-series. Their bumper discussion takes in gun/gonne control, racism/speciesist discrimination, dog/wolf identity and dom/sub relationships.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Steve join Granny, Nanny and Magrat as they return to Lancre to deal with folk memory fear mongers, the Elves. Their discussion takes in how this book follows on magnificently from what's been established in the previous Lancre witches books, how Lancre itself feels realer and more lived in here, and comparing Elves to the Internet, celebrities, aliens and much more besides.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm & Steve journey deep into the desert (of the mind) and re-emerge as literary prophets, rambling about theology and tortoises. Their discussion takes in the opposition between flexibility and certainty, the character development (and occasional strange turns) of Brutha and Vorbis, and a veritable holy war about how to rank the book.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Steve and Colm leap back into the Discworld and accompany the Lancre Witches as they on holiday to the New-Orleans-meets-Disneyland city of Genua. Their discussion includes fawning over the wonderful chemistry between the three central characters, the restrained and ambiguous way Pratchett depicts magic, and the strange treatment of the good-bad binary.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Steve and Colm leap headlong into life, death and shopping centres! They reference Michael Bay, Bruce Springsteen, Doctor Who and Red Dwarf in their efforts to wax lyrical about the emotional and thematic highs (and occasional structural lows) of Reaper Man. This culminates in a lengthy debate as to where this book fits in our podcast's ultimately subjective... ahem, highly prestigious, ranking list.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Steve briefly transform from bibliophiles into kinephiles in honour of the clicks. They discuss the book's depiction of postmodern hyperreality, the notable Discworld debuts of Ridcully and Gaspode, and compare Holy Wood to Silicon Valley.
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Rose and Colm discuss the 4th book in the Discworld Series, and they’ve brought along a friend to help! Steve Hill joins the hosts to talk about death (of course), love (of the young and uncertain variety) and a “quantum leap” in quality. Plus the Top 10 Anthropomorphic Personifications!
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Rose talk about the very first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic. They discuss its status as an incongruity in the Discworld series; how much more magic there was, why Death was so much more sadistic and whether that was really Vetinari eating the crystallised jellyfish. They also describe how they first discovered Pratchett’s pizza-shaped planet.
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Rose discuss The Light Fantastic, a further step towards the Discworld most readers are familiar with. They talk about all manner of things that didn’t feature in The Colour of Magic; a plot, a finale, an apocalyptic event and an octogenarian barbarian hero. In honour of Twoflower, they also detail the best tourist destinations on the Disc – in the unlikely event you are sucked through the pages and into the book a la The Pagemaster.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Rose and Colm tackle Equal Rites, the book that takes a big step towards a Discworld that would be more familiar to most readers than the madcap fantasy theme park of the first two novels. They also explore the parts of the book that seem might incongruous in retrospect: a Nanny Ogg-esque Granny Weatherwax and a proto-Ridcully era Unseen University. Also, there’s the top 10 One Book Wonder Characters!
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Rose return from a long hiatus to discuss the first of the wildly popular City Watch series. Their rambling discussion takes in how ‘million to one’ odds are calculated, the possibility of Vetinari being a villian and what the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night has in common with modern Men’s Rights groups.
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Rose tackle the fifth book in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. Their rambling discussion takes in their reluctance about Rincewind’s reluctant hero act, a mixed bag of side characters and the top five Discworld apocalypses. Is Sourcery a step back for the Discworld, or a side track down the scenic route?
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm chats to Rose about her visit to the 2015 Irish Discworld Con before they dive headlong into an analysis of Wyrd Sisters. Their rambling discussion takes in the fluctuating size of Lancre, Pratchett’s use of ‘mad’ villains and the top 5 Discworld computer games they’d love to see made.
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm and Rose are joined by Discworld newbie Aisling Lynch to discuss Pyramids. Therein are more Gormenghast references, Pratchett’s depiction of reluctant kings, Discworld prequels we’d like to see and possibly the most sympathetic and complex antagonist in the entire series.
Radio Morpork is a podcast that discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Radio Morpork returns! Rose has sadly had to bow out, but Colm is joined by Steve (of our Mort episode fame) to discuss this Discworld oddity. They talk about the limitations of Rincewind as a protagonist, the machinations of Satanic bureaucracy and the continuing taming of Unseen University.
By the Power of Grayskull! Walt and Annie make their first foray into Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, and team child-witch Tiffany Aching up with hard-nosed, by-the-book Sergeant Nicholas Angel. Will these two partners learn to work as a team on behalf of the Greater Good (the Greater Good), or will they need to turn in their guns, badges and frying pans? You'll have to listen to find out, but remember: we are absolutely 100% humans.
People will let you down, but Sunshine Bubbles and Scarlet Ember never will. This week on the show we dig back into some classics, as Jordan makes his first foray into Terry Pratchett's Discworld series with "Going Postal" and Caitlin checks out what Jordan considers a 'TV TV Show' with the animated cult classic Clone High. How'd that go? You know how to find out. Also this ep! Harley Quinn goes solo, Westworld is here, Tim Burton boofs it, a quick survey of Jordan's Pottermore life, so many updates on what we've been watching, what we Geekdowned for before Geekdown and Caitlin endures some anime trash to continue our informal series on tolerable fan service. Thanks so much for listening every week, friends!
Over four years of podcasting together, and I finally got KC to read a Discworld book - in fact, it was kind of her idea! After a quick catchup on life, we give a general introduction to the Discworld and then a short summary of Guards! Guards! (Discworld #8, Watch #1), before sounding our spoiler alert and diving a little deeper. We talk about Pratchett's writing style (including the undercurrent of anger that is often noted by readers), dialogue, and humor; gender representation in the Watch; our favorite characters, scenes, and quotes; and the sticky subject of cover art. KC sprinkles in some of her dream casting for a non-existent film adaptation, I share some thoughts about cosplaying a character from a book, we discuss the possible TV series adaptation, and we read part of a review from Anomaly staffer Michele. 10:25 - Main Topic Begins23:35 - Spoiler Alert!
We interview Paul Kidby, who is now the artist for Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, but used to do cover art for videogames boxes and magazines.
