Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! It's been 45 years since Ridley Scott's Alien terrorised audiences from the depth of outer space. In the intervening years we'd had sequels, prequels, spinoffs and now, in 2024, an interquel of sorts. Fede Alverez, (Don't Breathe) brings us another entry into the Alien franchise with Alien: Romulus. Set 27 years after the events of Alien, and before James Cameron's classic, Aliens, this latest installment sees a group of miners discover an abandoned space station floating in space. Seeing it as a ticket off their planet, the group explore and encounter more than they bargain for. In typical Alien franchise manner, the bodies begin to rack up! Check out the show to find out more! On Anniversary Corner we look back at the disaster movie Alien (1979). If that's not enough for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Thank you for supporting us and we hope you enjoy the show! 00:00 Intro 01:53 Shoutouts 02:53 Movie News 11:01 New on Streaming 15:13 New Trailers 24:02 Anniversary Corner 28:05 Alien: Romulus review 48:37 Memory: The Origins of Alien (Hidden Gem) 57:55 Outro

Alexandre O. Philippe has funneled his life-long cinematic obsessions into movies of his own, directing such documentary treats as “78/52: Hitchcock's Shower Scene,” “Memory: The Origins of Alien,” “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist,” and the new “Lynch/Oz” (out Friday 6/2). He made an entire movie about “Psycho,” so it's not toooo surprising that he picked 1960 - but his picks also showcase the wide, eclectic variety of that year's cinema.Sponsored by MUBI. Filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe's latest doc exploring William Friedkin's Exorcist premieres at Sundance. So let's discuss demon possessions and Alexandre's other films Memory: The Origins of Alien, 78/52, Doc of the Dead and The People vs. George Lucas.
At San Diego Comic Con we were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, which made it ideal that we were able to interview Alexandre Philippe, whose first film was about a chicken with its head cut off. We talked about his new film Memory: The Origins of Alien, why chestbursters were so terrifying to men in 1979, and how Legion M helps filmmakers create cool things for niche audiences that they may not otherwise be able to make. It's not game over, man, until you listen to THE NIGHT TIME SHOW!

So we finally saw Memory: The Origins of Alien this weekend and it was amazing. We haven't seen many documentaries, but the handful that we have seen have all been interesting and worth seeing.

Did Danny finally follow through and watch a trailer? Nathaniel definitely did as he recounts in a pitiful tale. How excited are the two for The Rise of Skywalker? Did they even get their tickets?Philippe has a place in Star Wars history, having directed The People vs. George Lucas. His latest documentary is a deep dive into one of the most iconic scenes in sci fi horror history. On this week’s episode, Ebony and Carolyn revisit the sci-fi horror classic Alien, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Our conversation attempts to examine some of the film’s many layers—its focus on working-class characters and their concerns, the ways in which H.R. Giger’s design for the alien taps into some of our most primal fears—while also acknowledging the filmmaking elements that help to make it such an enduring landmark of sci-fi cinema. There is an informative, in depth and well made documentary on the making of Alien (1979) it just doesn’t happen to be Memory: The Origins of Alien which they all watched this week. If you can find a copy of The Beast Within: The Making of Alien you should watch that one. While they’re on a roll they take on two new CW fall series, Batwoman and Nancy Drew. Since Tod is reputed to automatically like anything based on a comic book, and Dave is predisposed to like pretty much anything with an attractive female lead, logic would dictate they would have come up with something good to say about at least one of these shows. Listen and find out. Along the way they cover some random topics, and do an Alien themed round of Show and Tell. You can see pics of their Show and Tell items at regularjoe’s.com ... but probably not before the weekend, because that’s when Tod usually gets around to posting it. Thanks for listening!

Memory: The Origins of Alien premiered at Fantastic Fest 2019 from director Alexandre Philippe, known for 78/52. In Memory, Philippe explores the origins of one science fiction's most iconic films, Ridley Scott's Alien. But, this isn't just a production history, instead he discusses the myths and culture that formed the story of the film and how it could have only happened with the trio of Dan O'Bannon, H.R. Giger, and Ridley Scott. Beyond this, Philipped maps the history of the iconic "chestburster" scene, where it came from and how it was made. I was lucky enough to get to speak with Philippe at the festival and discuss why he chose the "Chestburster" scene, the role that myth plays in film, what sparked him to include some of the more emotional moments with his interviewees, and why making the film accessible to non-fans was important.
This week Megan blows Evan’s mind when she reveals some shocking new information to him about corn. Yes, corn. She and Dave kick off the show by reviewing the utterly disappointing MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN (3:35), a behind-the-scenes documentary that repeats all the same old stories about Ridley Scott’s beloved 1979 film. Then Evan and Dave cover Martin Scorsese’s often-overlooked gem THE KING OF COMEDY (14:38), detailing why JOKER is such an unsuccessful attempt to mimic it. Next Dave and Megan review LUCY IN THE SKY (23:42), a movie so frustrating they wish they didn’t have to talk about it. The one positive thing they can agree on though, is that Natalie Portman goes for broke with her performance. Lastly, all three of them delve into the Netflix mini-series UNBELIEVABLE (35:27), discussing why its first episode is so infuriating, while expounding upon why it’s such an important examination of trauma and a satisfying police procedural with tremendous performances by its leads Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever, and Toni Collette.

During San Diego Comic Con, we jumped over to the Legion M/Jay & Silent Bob activation! The awesome thing about the setup itself, is that they used the actual Quick Stop props from the movie, at the Comic Con. It went straight from the filming, to the convention center, setup by the same people who set it up for the movie. While we were enjoying all of the Jay & Silent Bob sets, we ran into Clare, from Legion M. Clare was kind enough to give us an interview outside of the set. We spoke about Legion M, and what events they had going on during San Diego Comic Con. We spoke a little bit about Memory: The Origins of Alien (out NOW), and about how Legion M and it's shareholders, came to be a part of this awesome documentary. Of course, we HAD to speak about Jay & Silent Bob Reboot! Jay & Silent Bob Reboot is a move that pokes fun of reboots/sequels while being both of those at the same time. Reboot hits select theaters, via Fathom events, on October 15th, and 17th. After you watch in theaters with your fellow peers, you can ALSO buy tickets for the Reboot Roadshow! Watch the movie again with Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes, and then talk about it, with them, after! Remember, we are ALWAYS looking for feedback from our listeners!

In the first of a series of updates from the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Film Comment Editor-in-Chief Nicolas Rapold hits the slopes with Eric Hynes, FC contributor and curator of film at the Museum of the Moving Image. In addition to discussing their dietary regimens (one must maintain strength in the face of this cinematic avalanche), the two trade highlights from their first day in Park City. Rapold and Hynes kick off with a chat about Bart Freundlich's soapy After the Wedding (featuring Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams) before digging deeper into a slate of documentaries: Petra Costa's The Edge of Democracy, Todd Douglas Miller's Apollo 11, and Alexandre O. Philippe's MEMORY—The Origins of Alien. Check back over the next week and a half for updates on all the highlights from the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
