Your hosts are joined by Krystle Matar to talk about Cassiel's Servant by Jacqueline Carey, a book that covers the same events as Kushiel's Dart but from another character's perspective. Lilly can't even bring herself to describe it as "the love interest's perspective" due to how there is neither love nor interest in Kushiel's Dart (although Sara disagrees), but Cassiel's Servant was pretty fun. They discuss the huge shift in genre, different characters' priorities, and some retconning.Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of fictional sexual assault and grooming. This whole episode contains spoilers for both Kushiel's Dart and Cassiel's Servant.Find more from Krystle:https://x.com/KrystleMatar Find us on Discord / Support us on PatreonThanks to the following musicians for the use of their songs:- Amarià for the use of “Sérénade à Notre Dame de Paris”Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License

Your hosts try not to make anyone too mad with their opinions about The Final Empire, Brandon Sanderson's first Mistborn novel. Credit where credit's due, it's got a really cool magic system. This is a sweet, charming read, absolutely designed to be enjoyed on a crisp fall evening. I want to go to Thistle Grove. My greatest regret about this book is that it isn't a five-season TV show that I can already sit down and just binge.”—Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author "A sexy, charming, and completely magical romance full of sparkling dialogue and loveable characters. Emmy's quest to find out where she belongs is so relatable, with some spells and supernatural elements included to spice things up. And Emmy's hometown, Thistle Grove, is so enchanting that I found myself wishing I could plan a visit! Reading Payback's a Witch is like curling up with a big mug of cider on a perfect autumn day."—Kerry Winfrey, author of Very Sincerely Yours "No tricks, all treat! Lana Harper's debut Payback's a Witch is a compulsively fun read.”—Jacqueline Carey, New York Times bestselling author of the Kushiel's Legacy series "Harper makes her adult debut with a queer rom-com that bewitches from the very first page...This magical joyride manages to feel both vibrantly current and timelessly mystical while avoiding the typical queer rom-com stereotypes. Combining John Tucker Must Die with a helping of an adult Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and a dash of Charmed, this addictive concoction begs for adaptation."—Publishers Weekly, starred review --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

I used a small smoothie blender for this. For Drink:  1 oz vodka 2 oz creme de cacao 1.5 oz Hershey's caramel syrup 1.5 oz milk or preferred milk substitute Hershey's chocolate syrup (optional for garnish) If not making salt foam, you'll need a table salt/smoked salt mix for rim (depending on how strong your smoked salt is, just cut it with table salt until it tastes good to your palate) Mix vodka, creme de cacao, caramel syrup, and milk in a mixing glass and stir well. All ingredients should be chilled - if not, stir with ice to chill and then strain out the ice. If you're not using the salt foam, rim a martini or coupe glass with the smoked salt/table salt mix instead at this stage. Pour the mixing glass into the prepared glass. If using foam, pour it gently on top. Drizzle lightly with chocolate syrup if desired. ----more----   Drink Recipe 2: Ice and Vines: 2 oz blue raspberry vodka 1.5 oz simple syrup 1 oz lime juice 6-8 mint leaves 1-1.5 cup of ice (depending on desired consistency) Granulated sugar (for rim) Mint sprig (optional for garnish) Muddle mint and simple syrup together, then strain through a fine strainer to remove leaves. Add the strained syrup, vodka, lime, and ice to blender, blend well. Rim a glass with granulated sugar and pour into the glass. Garnish with a mint sprig.

Hi from the UK! I’ve been listening to your podcast for years – I love it. You’re both awesome! I’ve been playing a lot of the video game Ghosts of Tsushima recently and I’d love some recommendations for books set in Japan to complement it! I like historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, sci-fi (I’ll pretty much try anything). I have Pachinko on my list. Bonus points for Samurai.  -Charlotte 3. My wife and I just had a baby on Valentine’s Day. We are white, Christian, and a LGBT family. We want our daughter to have as much diversity as possible. We have the little leaders and dream big series along with plenty of feminist books. We need some picture books about transgender kids, Muslim (or other religions) children, and children of different races/cultures. What are your favorite picture books for us to add to her library? Thank you! -Jessica 4. Could you recommend a fantasy or sci-fi read-alike for The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison? The things I like most about it are the fantasy elements, the fact that the main character is a person in power who leads responsibly because he’s genuinely a good, empathetic person, and the way that the protagonist learns to assert and value himself slowly throughout the book. Either way, thanks for your time! I appreciate you and your work! -Laura 5. I have been enjoying getting into some more door-stopper sized books this year and was hoping you could help me find some more. Specifically, I’d love an adult fantasy novel with a female lead (preferably written by a woman) maybe with a little steaminess. I generally really enjoy fantasy which doesn’t operate within the standard Tolkein-esque genre, but has its own twist and interesting world building. I read Kushiel’s Dart and that’s almost what I was looking for but I just couldn’t get past all the questionable consent stuff…. I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series. Some fantasy books I have loved (not all door-stoppers) include the Broken Earth trilogy, the Abhorsen trilogy, Gideon the Ninth, Lies of Locke Lamora, and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. A friend recently got me into the Wheel of Time series as well, which is fun but with a much more male-centric, standard fantasy feel. I do like when sci-fi elements are thrown into a fantasy world (such as with Gideon), but would prefer it to lean more into the fantasy side of things (already have some good sci-fi ones on my shelf). Generally not a huge fan of time travel or robots (excepting Murderbot). Please no sexual violence. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks! -April 6. Hi! About a year ago, I finally told my husband (and admitted to myself) that I’m bisexual. I hadn’t told anyone else because, well, I’m happily married and it’s not like I’m looking to date. And then, just a couple weeks ago I found out that my best friend of over 30 years is also bisexual! FEEDBACK Turtles All the Way Down by John Green (rec’d by Kelly) The Weight of Chains by Lesley Connor (rec’d by Justin) QUESTIONS 1. Dear Fellow Book Mistresses, I am looking for a book to gift this Christmas for a male friend of mine who is more than a friend, but less than a monogamous, significant other. Our relationship is mixed race (he’s a white man and I’m a black woman), so I’d like to point him in the direction of a non-white male focused book. He likes non-fiction and auto/biographies. I happen to know he likes and has read Marilyn Manson’s book “The Long Hard Road Out of Hell,” and he’s a fan of Rob Zombie films. I would like to gift him a non-fiction book about an interesting person or occurrence, but I would also like to incorporate a social justice aspect and gift a book that is written by a person of color, LGBTQ, or disabled person, or impacts one (or all) of these groups in some way. Thank you in advance for your recommendations! Sincerely, -Sneaky SJW 2. I’m looking for a romance (or erotica, I’m flexible) to break my reading slump? NaNoWriMo is a hard time for me to read and almost always throws me into a slump, and then holiday stress. And I like starting out the new year with getting ahead in my reading goal. For slump breaking I’m looking for “lighter” romances, queer MCs preferred, gender is fake so I don’t care pairing wise, and if it’s part of a series that I can [MARATHON] – even better. Some of my favorite romance authors are Tiffany Reisz, KJ Charles, Avon Gale, Aidan Wayne, Jacqueline Carey, Courtney Milan, Alisha Rai, Alyssa Cole, Cat Sebastian, Shira Glassman, Katrina Jackson, Chelsea M Cameron. -Casey 3. Need Answer – ASAP. Hi, I’m requesting this for my husband who has very different taste than me. My husband and I have a trip planned to Spain in January and he would like to learn more about the history of Spain. He’s wanted to for years but hasn’t been able to find the right book. He has read “The Name of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafron. His preference would be for a non-fiction audiobook but I think a good historical fiction especially a saga spanning centuries and it does not have to be an audiobook. Please help -Ellen 4. Hello ladies! My husband and I have booked a trip to the Pacific Northwest on a whim today as flights are cheap and coincide with our eight year anniversary! We love to pair our travels with some good books and turn to Book Riot for recommendations. We are QPOC, scientists (I’m a paleontologist, he is a geographer), love to be outdoors, and love learning about history. Would it be cheating to ask for one rec for each of us? A non fiction, nature book for my husband and a historical fiction for myself would be ideal (bonus points for graphic novels, romance, multigenerational sagas, and QPOC authors!) -Michelle 5. TIME SENSITIVE: CHRISTMAS. I am stumped on what to get my 17 year old cousin – she is not a big reader, but that mostly stems from the fact that she hasn’t much liked the books assigned in school. She plays sports, likes makeup, sings and acts in school productions, and is in junior year of high school. I’m thinking the way to go is gift her a graphic novel, a short book, or a something that can be skimmed/read in chunks rather than a thick novel. Any thoughts? TIME SENSITIVE: CHRISTMAS. Hello Book Riot! I am looking for a book to gift my cousin who is 27, has high functioning autism, and ADD. He loves dreaming up and drawing twisted fairy tale stories/creatures, and especially loves the Alice in Wonderland mythos. He doesn’t have the patience to sit through even a young adult novel, but I think a Middle Grade or YA graphic novel with bright colors and limited text would be fantastic, especially as it might inspire some new creatures for him to draw! Dark themes and adult graphic novels are okay, I just something with too much text or too complex of a plot will lose his attention. Looking forward to seeing what you have to recommend! TIME SENSITIVE: CHRISTMAS. Hello Book Riot! I am looking for a book for my sister in law. She is in her early twenties, living in LA where she goes to film school and has recently started directing her own films, funded through kickstarter and her own savings. I would love to get her either a coffee table book or biography about women in film who are NOT actresses or a book about becoming a woman in the workforce, specifically as someone who is in the position of overseeing her own cast and crew. Thanks for your help! 6. This year, I would like to read more big books (the longer the better, really) to force myself to slow down and get immersed in a story before moving on to the next shiny new book. I’ve got a few in mind (War and Peace, The Luminaries, 1Q84, A Suitable Boy) but would love some more suggestions, preferably by women or authors of colour. I’m open to any genre of fiction, though I prefer my sci-fi and fantasy on the softer side. Some of my favorites of the last few years a A Little Life, The Long Way To a Small, Angry Planet, Homegoing and Lincoln in the Bardo. Thanks! -Stacey 7. Hi guys, I really enjoy listening to your podcast and love getting new book recommendations from you! I was hoping you might have suggestions for books related to Greek Mythology. I just finished reading Circe by Madeline Miller and loved it! It reminded me of how much I enjoy Greek Mythology and I’ve been craving more ever since. When I was younger, I also really enjoyed all of the Percy Jackson books and how they transplanted the Greek Gods into a modern day setting. Do you have any recommendations for other books that are similar to either of these? [Content warning: Discussion of social justice, discussion of violence, spoilers for Jacqueline Carey books.] [Edit 10/25: This post was inspired by a debate with a friend of a friend on Facebook who has since become somewhat famous. I’ve renamed him here to “Andrew Cord” to protect his identity.] I. Andrew Cord criticizes me for my bold and controversial suggestion that maybe people should try to tell slightly fewer blatant hurtful lies: I just find it kind of darkly amusing and sad that the “rationalist community” loves “rationality is winning” so much as a tagline and yet are clearly not winning. And then complain about losing rather than changing their tactics to match those of people who are winning. Which is probably because if you *really* want to be the kind of person who wins you have to actually care about winning something, which means you have to have politics, which means you have to embrace “politics the mindkiller” and “politics is war and arguments are soldiers”, and Scott would clearly rather spend the rest of his life losing than do this. That post [the one debunking false rape statistics] is exactly my problem with Scott. He seems to honestly think that it’s a worthwhile use of his time, energy and mental effort to download evil people’s evil worldviews into his mind and try to analytically debate them with statistics and cost-benefit analyses. He gets *mad* at people whom he detachedly intellectually agrees with but who are willing to back up their beliefs with war and fire rather than pussyfooting around with debate-team nonsense. It honestly makes me kind of sick. It is exactly the kind of thing that “social justice” activists like me *intend* to attack and “trigger” when we use “triggery” catchphrases about the mewling pusillanimity of privileged white allies. In other words, if a fight is important to you, fight nasty. If that means lying, lie. If that means insults, insult. If that means silencing people, silence. It always makes me happy when my ideological opponents come out and say eloquently and openly what I’ve always secretly suspected them of believing. My natural instinct is to give some of the reasons why I think Andrew is wrong, starting with the history of the “noble lie” concept and moving on to some examples of why it didn’t work very well, and why it might not be expected not to work so well in the future. But in a way, that would be assuming the conclusion. I wouldn’t be showing respect for Andrew’s arguments. I wouldn’t be going halfway to meet them on their own terms. The respectful way to rebut Andrew’s argument would be to spread malicious lies about Andrew to a couple of media outlets, fan the flames, and wait for them to destroy his reputation. Then if the stress ends up bursting an aneurysm in his brain, I can dance on his grave, singing: ♪ ♬ I won this debate in a very effective manner. Now you can’t argue in favor of nasty debate tactics any more ♬ ♪ I’m not going to do that, but if I did it’s unclear to me how Andrew could object. I mean, he thinks that sexism is detrimental to society, so spreading lies and destroying people is justified in order to stop it. I think that discourse based on mud-slinging and falsehoods is detrimental to society. Therefore…

Hit the road, jack, and don't you come back no more no more no MORE NO MORE Okay, serenades aside, this week as you're preparing to undergo your own road trips and holiday journeys, we're back with a deep dive into the various manifestations of road trips in science fiction and fantasy. We ask all of the important questions, like: journey or destination--how do they relate? What separates a "road trip" from a standard "journey narrative"? What does a poem by Margaret Atwood have to do with ANY of this craziness? And why do we love road trip narratives as a whole, and why do we love some specific stories ... specifically? Some of the many texts we interrogate include: David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas," JRRT's "Lord of the Rings," Brian K. Vaughan's greater body of comic work, Catherynne Valente's "Space Opera" and its inspiration, Douglas Adams' "Hitchhiker's Guide," Richard Powers' "The Overstory," Jacqueline Carey's "Starless," Seanan McGuire's "Ghost Roads" series, the film "Mad Max: Fury Road" and ... yes, a whole lot more. Even the Epic of Gilgamesh (the FIRST RECORDED STORY, WHAT) gets some brief, and laughing love. You can find our back episodes on YouTube. Some people are born into families, some people make their own, and some people stumble onto theirs in the dark. This week, we're here for the found families which gave us a home in science fiction and fantasy. You'll know many of the titles and many of the worlds: Star Trek, Harry Potter, Firefly, Lumberjanes, Avatar the Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra, Steven Universe, Jacqueline Carey's "Starless," Becky Chambers' everything, Charlie Jane Anders' "All the Birds in the Sky," Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time," and many many (MANY) more. There's something inherently queer about the found family trope, or perhaps more rightly we should say that found families make critical space for the queer conversations which have informed our lives as readers and authors and commentators on science fiction and family. We find ourselves in these books, and we want to dig into all of the reasons why! You can find our back episodes on YouTube. From the highly sought and exquisite companion to the lowly street walker trying to scape enough credits together to get off world, prostitution is rife in SFF. So is this a good thing, reclaiming sex and sex positivity? Is it exploitative, perpetuating bad steriotypes and encoraging a mindset of permissiveness toward the ill treatment of sex workers? Or is it merely a snapshot of life and human nature, falling into neither the positive or negative? This week the dragons delve into the sometimes seedy world of the SFF sex industry. Talking today about knowing where a story starts and how that can be difficult, along with taking critique in general. I mention Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey and answer a question from a listener on Exile of the Seas. The morning glory photo is a bit out of focus, but I love how the throat looks full of light. Ah, the challenges of being Pagan in intimate and/or romantic relationships. Is it harder in interfaith relationships than with other Pagans? What challenges arise for Pagans when discussing faith and practice? How do we deal with change and development in these relationships? In this one, Aimee, Amanda, Dani, and Jacob wail in the dungeon about their experiences (and lessons learned). Along the way, there's talk of enchanted swords, undead and/or robot armies, fisting, necromancers, a little about Hinduism, mixing folkways, Paganish traditions, misfortune and luck, prayer positions, shared experience, family values, and so much more. KNKI: Knowledge, No Intolerence, Kindness, Integrity3. “Submission is not about authority and it’s not about obedience; it is all about relationships of love and respect.” -Wm. Paul YoungOn this episode of the Krypt we are going to talk about BDSM in Literature, and no we’re not discussing 50 Shades but first, I have to welcome my amazing co-host, Funsize.Literature both fiction and nonfiction is a staple of civilized society. The lifestyle is a society in and of itself and we have our literature. Our fictions delve into our deepest fantasies and our non-fictions help us learn and share with others. Funsize you are a huge connoisseur of the written word. What books do you find span the scope of our world the best? Non-fictions:The Topping and Bottoming SeriesThis is a series of books that has been around since the mid 90’s. Written by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy, these books, explore the basics of each perspective in the lifestyle. Dossie Easton also wrote the Ethical Slut which explores polyamory. The Ultimate Guide to Kink by Tristan TaorminoA very well written basics guide to everything you need to know when you first enter the lifestyle. Of course there are a lot of interesting things to be found within these pages even if you aren’t new. BDSM: How to Take Your First Steps into BDSM Another great book for newbies by Scarlett Dalton. Life, Leather, and the Pursuit of Happiness by Steve LenuisThis particular book delves into the history of leather culture and the beginnings of modern BDSM as we know it. History is very important so this is really a must read. You should also check out the Leatherman’s Protocol Handbook by John D. Weal. Other nonfictions to check out when you have a moment are:Raven Kaldera’s books Power Circuits: Polyamory in a Power Dynamic, and Sacred Power, Holy Shrine. Two Knotty Boys and Two Knotty Boys Back on the Ropes, a couple of interesting, educational, and entertaining books on learning the art of rope bondage. Elizabeth Cramer, Kuldrin I know you love her writings just because she keeps things short and simple, which works well with your busy schedule. She has written something like six or seven books detailing how to be a dominant and how to be a submissive. We’re both huge fans for a reason. And finally, Igniting the Fire: the Art of Romantic Submission by Master Arcane. This amazing book illustrates the BDSM dynamic through the eyes of a truly caring dominant. I’ve personally read this book at least twenty times over. If you want to get an idea of what you’ll be reading definitely go back and listen to the amazing interview between Kuldrin and Master Arcane. https://kuldrinskrypt.com/s01e14 There are dozens of others we could recommend but in order to keep me from talking until I’m hoarse this is the list we’re going to have to settle for today. If you have any more suggestions feel free to join in the discussion on our Fetlife group, Kuldrin’s Krypt. FictionSo our starting point for this particular half of the list is a rather obvious choice; the granddaddy of Sadism, the Libertine, Marquis de Sade. Justine explores a whole world of human sexuality, torture, imprisonment, and the duality of the justice system. Even if it doesn’t quite explore true BDSM and power dynamics it is a wonderful read. 120 Days of Sodom is a novel of erotic orgies. While this sounds fun in a sense, this particular tale is all about sexual abuse, torture (not the fun kinds), and finally the slaughter of several characters involved. There are several other works by de Sade, many of them available for free in PDF format. It is however, important to remember while de Sade inspired the word sadism for his works on featuring pain in a sexual setting, much of what is actually portrayed is not respectful or caring. It is in fact abusive and often non-consensual acts in vivid detail so if you can not stomach these things, be sure to skip these classics. The Way of a Man With a Maid by anonymous is actually one of my favorites. This novel portrays a man who is fascinated by a young woman, which leads to acts of obsession, bondage, and questionable consensual content. It’s highly erotic but can again doesn’t accurately portray the consent necessary for anyone truly in the lifestyle. Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty series illustrates the traditional tale of sleeping beauty in a more erotic light. It truly does display certain fetishes and parts of the BDSM lifestyle. Maya Banks the Enforcers Series, Mastered, Dominated, and Kept, are three books which mix the erotism of BDSM with more romantic notes. Quite enjoyable. The Kushiel’s Legacy Series by Jacqueline Carey, which set off my exploration of the lifestyle. I read the very first novel in this series when I was only thirteen years old and when it’s subject matter was discovered it led to a talk which led me to my training years later. It’s still one of my favorite’s not only because of the highly masochistic main character, or the erotic scenes, but also because of the political intrigue. And finally the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The series as it moves along begins to depict more of the lifestyle and even features a submissive character, Nathaniel, to explore what it’s like for some of us out there. What’s more is that these novels, despite their fantasy/ sci-fi setting, still manage to (mostly) accurately display everything from fetish clubs, to power dynamics, to the roles of protectors. I’m clearly a huge fan. So these were the literary works we’ve chosen to delve into. As we said before there are tons more to be found. A final note or two.I’d like to thank our Executive Producer Jeremiah, Our Senior Producer Matt, Producer Missy Lynn and our Jr. Producers K-2SO, Irish Mt. Dragon and The Accidental Trucker. Help support this podcast! >> Hey there, friends. In episode 018 of the Write Now podcast, I'm going to give you some advice that I'll bet you don't hear all that often: Fail a lot. As writers, why are we such perfectionists? Why do we expect perfection from ourselves? Shouldn't we understand better than anyone else that the human creature is inherently and beautifully flawed? I know, I know. I'm guilty of this, too. But let's do something we writers tend to be not-super-great at and dive headfirst into REALITY and admit: We are human. We are not perfect. And that is okay. Go ahead and repeat that a couple times, whether out loud or simply to yourself. Because it's true, and it's true of everyone. Especially if you're the type of person who protects yourself from failure -- and by doing so also prevents yourself from trying. And protects yourself from success. Failure fun facts: Failure is not rejection -- rejection is subjective feedback. Failure is not the opposite of success -- failure is a step toward success. Failure is not consequence -- before you stop yourself from failing at (a.k.a trying) something, it pays to find out what the consequences for that failure are, if any. If anyone has been successful at anything, whether it's writing a book or painting a mural or learning to walk, it's because they failed a lot on the way there. The more you fail, the more you'll succeed. In short, you have all the permission you need to fail a lot. Now go out and make it happen. The book of the week. The paranormal romance genre (often called PNR) has been gaining popularity over the past decade or two, recently exploding into the Twilight phenomenon. But far before Edward began stalking Bella, Buffy romanced Angel and Spike, readers fell in love with Christine Feehan's dark side, and Elena Michaels was bitten. I love PNR -- as long as it's well written. There are so many coattail-riders out there post-Twilight success that sometimes it can be hard to tell the good from the bad. However, I picked up Dark Currents by Jacqueline Carey with blissfully blind confidence. Jacqueline Carey has long been one of my favorite writers. I first read her (in)famous Kushiel's Dart series in high school and found a whole new world of sexy political intrigue in a uniquely feminine high-fantasy setting. It was new and surprising and soaked in syrupy language while remaining imminently readable. So when I saw that Ms. Carey had written a PNR series, I was ecstatic. How was she going to deviate from the norm this time? I wondered. I bought all the volumes I could find (which, at time of writing, is 3) and happily began to devour the first, Dark Currents. Unfortunately, Ms. Carey's considerable skill wasn't enough to elevate this novel from what it was: a perfectly by-the-book (no pun intended) PNR standard. Love triangles, mythical beasts, sociopaths, and a murder mystery should make for an immensely compelling story. But unfortunately, we've seen it all before, and all too often. Also, I'm still not super 100% sure what to make of the main character's tail. Keep up-to-date with my reading exploits on Goodreads. Featured quote: Leave me a review. Like the Write Now podcast? First Story: “Infinity Syrup” by Laurel Winter Fay was Zen shopping, something she had learned when she worked swing shift in card assembly at IBM. The effort of plugging six components into the right holes on four hundred cards had always left her too tired to think. Too tired to think, but too wired to sleep. So she usually stopped at a twenty-four-hour grocery on her way home and let her hands do the shopping for her. Hands reaching mindlessly, plucking items off the shelves. And she was always surprised to find — when she got home and unpacked the paper bags — that she had exactly what she needed. Odd combinations, perhaps. Who would have paired avocado and Kashi, kippered herring and strawberries? But the four basic food groups were always represented. No unappealing leftovers, tastebuds tantalized in wonderful ways. And so, even when she worked her way from swing shift to first and from manufacturing to management, she still practiced Zen... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Our final panel from Confusion 2014. We hear from six authors, Jacqueline Carey, Sarah Zettel, J.C. Daniels, Sam Sykes, Merrie Haskell and Cindy Spencer Pape. From the programme:"The Trojan War was fought for the love of one woman. Arthurian legend would be incomplete without the love stories. Quests are often undertaken due to an underlying romance, but our popular understanding of genre and various authors' place within and among them seems to lose sight of this fact. Why is one writer's love story paranormal romance, while another's is a tale of fantasy?"

More feedback than you can shake a stick at this episode, as listeners talk to me about their hopes, their dreams, and the way their first D&D character didn't quite work out as planned. Also, I'm accused of bragging and what I call J.R. Blackwell when we're not in front of microphones. Here's some of the folks who contacted me this week: Pat of the JFP Podcast Nobilis of Nobilis Erotica Joe of the On The Podcast And here's some of the things we talk about: Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series My Monarch's Henchman costume from the Venture Brothers. Today's story is an excerpt from Jacqueline Carey's novel, Kushiel's Dart.  It's a marvelous book and I heartily recommend it to lovers of fantasy, romance, and erotica.  The reader is my wife, Dee.  Kushiel's Dart is copyright 2001, Jacqueline Carey. Some folks have voiced a distaste for erotica read by a man, so I have instituted an alternate feed at http://nobilis.libsyn.com/rss/reader that will contain only those episodes where the reader of the story has one or more female voices.Theme music is "Twenty First Century Love" by The Aphrodisiacs, courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network.Direct Download
