Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett
POPULARITY
In this episode, we go back to the Discworld to discuss the book “Wyrd Sisters”, by Terry Pratchett. The second book in the Witches series, “Wyrd Sisters” parodies and satires “Macbeth, by William Shakespeare” (which we discuss in the episode after this one). We discuss which character would be the only human in the muppets adaptation, critique on theatre, as well as discussing our favourite metaphor of the book (feat. “the fool jingled miserably across the floor”) If you're a fan of all things Discworld, Terry Pratchett, or Cats perceiving ghosts, then this episode is for you. Book Blurb:“Three witches on a lonely heath. A king cruelly murdered, his throne usurped by his ambitious cousin. A child heir and the royal crown, both missing.Witches don't have these kinds of leadership problems themselves – in fact, they don't have leaders.Granny Weatherwax is the most highly regarded of the leaders they don't have. But even she finds that meddling in royal politics is a lot more complicated than certain playwrights would have you believe. Particularly when the blood on your hands just won't wash off . . .”Content WarningsNASupport the showRecommend us a Book!If there's a book you want to recommend to us to read, just send us a message/email and we'll pop it on our long list (but please read our review policy on our website first for the books we accept).Social MediaWebsite: https://teachingmycattoread.wordpress.com/Email: teachingmycattoread@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/teachmycat2read/Tumblr: https://teachingmycattoread.tumblr.comYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFXi9LNQv8SBQt8ilgTZXtQListener Surveyhttps://forms.gle/TBZUBH4SK8dez8RP9

Recorded March 31, 2024 And we're back! After a (not so) short hiatus, Nate and Ryan resume their antics with a discussion of what makes a game, bread point inflation, and musical theatre. Then after judging Flan KitKats and sparkling juice, they turn their attention to the theatre. All this leads up to their main media discussion of the Sir Terry Pratchett novel Wyrd Sisters, where they talk about plot structure, breaking rules, and how to transplant a country. This is the tenth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Content note: discussion of suicidal thoughts in the What Would Snufkin do part of the podcast This book splits three ways on Midsummer Eve: Snufkin is enacting revenge on a Park Keeper, Moomintroll and the Snork Maiden are having a party with a Fillyjonk, and the rest of our crew are still aboard the floating theatre. There's so much about theatre in this book: a play within a play, a lion being played by two beavers, a disastrous dress rehearsal and happy endings all round. We talk about the effects of responsibility on Snufkin (spoiler: he hates it) and there's some light prison abolitionism. It's a banger. You should definitely read this one. Our Spirits this week are Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett, How It Ends and Wizard Team, a black fantasy podcast from Black Nerds Create.
We had very little wriggle room this month, so when we couldn't record at the scheduled time, we had to postpone our episode about Strata. That's still coming for the 25th of June, but to make sure you're not left hanging, Ben has conjured up this bonus episode on his own! He'll discuss the latest news in the world of Terry Pratchett - and there's surprisingly a lot - and also have a quick chat with Danny Sag, Vice-Chair of Nullus Anxietas, the Australian Discworld Convention, to talk about what makes fan conventions - and Nullus Anxietas - tick. Which of the upcoming Pratchett projects has you most excited? Are there any specific short stories you think we should have on our list for a whole episode? Have you read any of Gabrielle Kent's books? Are you keen to go to a Discworld convention? Do you really want to hear a bonus episode about how the sausage...sorry, the podcast gets made? And why is this last-minute bonus episode still nearly an hour long??? Use the hashtag #PratchatElsewhere on social media to answer these questions, or get in touch via email or our subscriber Discord. Big thanks to Danny Sag for making time for this episode at the last minute - and for dropping so many hints that he wants us to be guests for Nullus Anxietas 9... We hope we can! That website again is ausdwcon.org. We also mentioned the Pratchett podcasts The Compleat Discography; Radio Morpork; The Death of Podcasts; Wyrd Sisters; I've Never Read Discworld; Desert Island Discworld; The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret; and Who Watches the Watch. Plus two others edited by Ben: Kate and Adele's Bridgerton podcast What Would Danbury Do?, and Brock Wilbur's big weird heart of a show, Caring Into the Void. Next episode is the rescheduled #Pratchat68 discussing Strata with someone who's no stranger to fan conventions, EJ Mann! Then in July, Deanne Sheldon-Collins returns for the fourth Long Earth novel, The Long Utopia, in #Pratchat69. Send in questions using those hashtags on social media, or send us an email at chat@pratchatpodcast.com. You'll find the full notes and errata for this episode on our web site.

This week I get back to the great Terry Pratchett with, Wyrd Sisters.
For our sixtieth episode - our troll's teeth anniversary - Liz and Ben are once again devoting an entire show to answering your questions, about the Discworld, Pratchett's other work, and their own - with an eye on what's still to come. (And yes, we allowed ourselves to break the 2.5 hour limit, just this once.) What would your ideal Pratchett adaptation look like? Who's the best Dicsworld villain? If one of your possessions could be made from sapient pearwood, what would it be? Which books have been the worst, the most challenging, and the most surprising? If Vetinari died and the people of Ankh-Morpork could queue up to see his body, what would happen? And which is the most confused bird? You asked these and many more amazing questions! Plus we specifically asked you: Do you have other people in your life with whom you share your love of Pratchett? How are you reading - or re-reading - the books, if you are? What do you do when you listen to the show? Can you follow the show if you haven't read the book? Do you have a word or phrase you've said most of your life that you discovered was wrong? What joke did you not get until years later? Use the hashtag #Pratchat60 on social media to answer any of the above. (Thanks again to listener Jodie for this eternally useful idea.) You can find Elizabeth on Twitter as @elizabethflux, and on Instagram at @elizabethflux. Watch out for her amazing self-made outfits. You can find Ben and via his web site benmckenzie.com.au, on Twitter at @McKenzie_Ben and Instagram at @notongotham, where you might catch a glimpse of his T-shirt collection. Special thanks to our sibling Pratchett podcasts for their questions: Who Watches the Watch, Desert Island Discworld, Wyrd Sisters and The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret. And thanks to each and every one of you listens, asks questions or sends in answers. Next month is a special double-header: we'll be reading the 34th Discworld novel, 2005's Thud!, with guest Matt Roden. Get your questions in via the hashtag #Pratchat61 by late October! Plus we're teaming up with Jo and Francine from The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret to tackle the book-within-a-book, Where's My Cow? Ask questions for this team-up using the hashtag #MakeYeChat. You'll find the full notes and errata for this episode on our web site.
Thank you so much to everyone who made this show possible!
Manning and Liz have covered 41 Discworld books. Let's see what they can remember.
We explore every author's worst nightmare as writer Penny Love returns to Pratchat and finds the barrier between reality and fiction getting all wibbly-wobbly in Terry Pratchett's 1988 short story, "Final Reward". After a particularly bad row with his girlfriend Nicky - and a pint of wine - author Kevin Dogger decides to kill off the protagonist of his best-selling fantasy series. The next morning, Erdan the Barbarian appears on Dogger's doorstep with the milk. He was, after all, promised a final reward: an eternity of carousing in the halls of his creator... Content note: the story "Final Reward" contains discussion of (fictional) suicide. If you or anyone you know needs help, use the Wikipedia list of crisis lines to find one local to you. Written for the short-lived roleplaying magazine G.M., "Final Reward" is Pratchett's go at the age-old tradition of writers writing about writers. But in true Pratchett form, it's not just about that... Hailing from around the time of Wyrd Sisters and Pyramids, but "tinkered with" before appearing in A Blink of the Screen, it depicts an author ill at ease with the real world and human relationships - by all accounts not much like Pratchett himself at all. And then there's the way it ends... What did you think of this one? Have you ever written a character you'd like to meet in person? Would you swap places with them? And is this a dig at any real fantasy authors, and we've missed the joke? Join in the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat58 on social media. Guest Penelope Love is a writer best known for her roleplaying game work, especially with Chaosium for Call of Cthulhu, including the upcoming Victorian London campaign she mentions this episode. She previously joined us for #Pratchat45, "Hogswatch in Grune", discussing the quite Lovecraftian "Twenty Pence with Envelope and Seasonal Greeting". Penny is also part of Campaign Coins, who as well as making gorgeous metal coins for use with tabletop games, publish Penny's comic fantasy short story collections about “The Three Dungeoneers”, which you can find here. Penny is on Twitter as @PennyLoveWrites, or you can follow @CampaignCoins for more on their projects. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our website. As previously advised, due to some technical difficulties - and not a time machine, to Ben's disappointment - the next episode to be released will be #Pratchat57, discussing the third Long Earth novel, The Long Mars, with Joel Martin. Look for it in the Pratchat podcast feed on August 25. Next month in #Pratchat59, we're discussing The Science of Discworld III: Darwin's Watch with science and fiction writer, Dr Kat Day! And after that, in October, it's finally time for another general questions episode, #Pratchat60. This is the perfect opportunity to ask us about books you missed first time round, or general questions about Discworld, Pratchett, us and the show! Send in your questions for either of those episodes via social media (using the appropriate hashtag), or send us an email at chat@pratchatpodcast.com.

Physics turned weird during the last century, first with the relativity and then with quantum mechanics. Supersymmetry and String Theory have been en vogue for the last decades because they are such beautiful theories, but the experiments (LHC at CERN) don't turn up the predictions (all the while LIGO has found the gravitational waves). Sabine Hossenfelder is a German theoretical physicist and has asked herself, why the physics community likes the beautiful theories so much more then the ugly but well-tested Standard Model, in this months non-fiction book recommendation. When we see Satanists and Satanism in media, it's always the same story: Black cloaks, human sacrifices, and not a lot of authenticity. Today, we've singled out some of our favorite fictional works and characters that portray our real Satanic values -– even though none of these are actually supposed to be Satanists. Episode 3 of Unseen Academicals, examining the second book in the Witches Series, Wyrd Sisters (1988), and using it to explore theories of humour, the power of words, Shakespeare, the history of Macbeth, evolving depictions of witches, broomsticks, Black Aliss, vegetarian ghosts, and more! The sound on this on is pretty rough. As Alice and I have alluded to on the previous episodes, recording this one was a bit of an ordeal and I essentially had to stitch it together, Igor style, from three seperate back-up recoridngs that all got weirdly compressed. We're pretty down on this one too, so heads up about that.Referenced transcripts: independentresearcher.academia.edu/JoshuaBulleid/Podcasts Contact: unseenacademicalspod@gmail.com Alice's other podcast, Of the Devil's Party: https://ofthedevilsparty.sounder.fm/ Support: patreon.com/doctorprometheuspod

Wyrd Sisters is a great entry point book for Discworld. It's stacked to the rafters with solid female characters, it's the point at which Terry's exploration of witch magic gets really good, and it's a really fun read to boot. This episode contains depictions of violence that some listeners may find disturbing. Further trigger warnings include mutilation and child death.
What do desquamation, freak propeller accidents and hypodermic cone shell needles have in common? They're all featured in The Wyrd Sisters' first episode of 2020. This week's oceanic theme takes us into the tragic fate of the Titanic and her sisters, the single largest instance of humans eaten alive by animals, and a cruisy tour of Australia's deadliest sea babies. Please note that this podcast contains mature content. This episode contains depictions of violence that some listeners may find disturbing.
'Twas three nights after Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a bearded, cookie-thieving home invader. Welcome listeners, to the Wyrd Sisters' Christmas episode. In this show, we go beneath the Yggdrasil tree to learn a few things from the Wyrd Sisters to see what they have to say about Pluto. He has been in Capricorn since 2008 and still has a few years to go. Currently, we are at the peak of his performance with the rest of the Boneyard (Saturn, Jupiter, Ceres, Ketu). No better time to get acquainted than right now. It is my prayer that you learn something both new and old about him. I also hope it dispels any fears you may have as well. It’s the other way around.” A king has been cruelly murdered, his throne usurped by his wicked cousin and his ambitious wife. An infant heir and the crown of the kingdom are both missing. Dim soldiers, strolling players and querulous peasants roam a land in peril. But it’s three witches that stand between the Kingdom and destruction.
The most up-do-date info available on the big scoring controversy between the wizards and the witches. As of this writing, the books which have been adudged as featuring one or more witches in a major role are:Witches: Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, Carpe Jugulum, Wee Free Men, Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, I Shall Wear Midnight and The Shepherd's Crown.Initially, the Wizards were given credit for The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Moving Pictures, Eric, Interesting Times, Hogfather, The Last Continent, The Last Hero and Unseen Academicals. The wizards appealed because they hadn't been credited with a point for Equal Rites. They also discovered that the scorer, who has since been sacked, counted The Color of Magic as one book. With these changes, The contest resulted in an eleven-all tie. The witches appeared to accede to this, although there is some disagreement about that. The wizards, however, immediately expressed their displeasure and appealed to Lord Vetinari, claiming that Soul Music, Going Postal and Raising Steam all feature at least one wizard in a major role. There is some disagreement about this, to put it mildly. But Lord Vetinari will have to sort it all out. It is rumored that he has tasked Commander Vimes with investigating this whole situation, but from our perspective it is very difficult to see a reason for calling in the Watch. In episode four, vaudevillian Elly Squires - aka Clara Cupcakes - joins us to discuss one of her first Discworld books, and the start of the witches series proper: Wyrd Sisters! The sixth Discworld novel, published in 1988, it's the second book to feature Granny Weatherwax - but the first to introduce her fellow witches, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick. Seasoned witches Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are adjusting to life in a coven with recently graduated apprentice Magrat Garlick when the king of their tiny country of Lancre is murdered, and his baby son escapes into their arms. The murderer, Duke Felmet, is crowned the new, much crueller king, but with the rightful heir off being raised by a troupe of travelling actors, Granny, Nanny and Magrat must contend with rumour, theatre and their own clashing personalities if they are to change their kingdom's story... The witches are one of Pratchett's most beloved groups of characters, and pre-date both the City Watch and the modern faculty of Unseen University - so it's surprising to see them spring so fully-formed from their first novel! We loved meeting them all over again. We'd love to hear what you think of Wyrd Sisters - if you're joining this episode's discussion on social media, please use the hashtag #Pratchat4 so we can all find each other's thoughts! (Big thanks to listener Jodie for this brilliant idea.) Elly Squires can be found on Twitter as her alter-ego @claracupcakes. She's touring her hit 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show, The Worst, to various festivals around Australia and the world, including Fringe World in Perth and the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland. Keep an eye out for her tour dates on Facebook or (if you're not afraid of Russian hackers) at claracupcakes.com. You can read the full show notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Our next book, discussed in our March 8th episode, will be 1989's standalone Discworld novel, Pyramids - and joining us to talk about assassins, gods and a very different tiny kingdom will be comedian Richard McKenzie! We'll be recording on February 19th, so get your questions in before then if you'd like us to answer them on the podcast! You can use the hashtag #Pratchat5 to ask them via social media.

In episode three, comedian Cal Wilson is back to discuss the book that started her passion for Terry Pratchett - Sourcery! The fifth Discworld novel, published in 1989, it features the return of the inept wizard Rincewind. Rincewind is very happy to have left his adventuring days behind him, working as assistant librarian at Unseen University in Ankh-Morpork, the Disc's premiere college for wizards. But just as a new archchancellor is about to be named, the young boy Coin arrives. He is the eighth son of an eighth son of an eighth son - a Sourcerer, a source of raw magic, something not seen on the Disc since the ancient time of the Mage Wars. As he takes over the university and wizards across the world awaken power they've never known, the end of the world draws nigh...and Rincewind just can't seem to avoid getting involved. Rincewind was Pratchett's first protagonist, and this novel exemplifies all the things that make us love him: genre-awareness, unrepentant cowardice, reluctant heroism, lack of any skill at wizardry and fierce self-identification as a wizard. It also sees the return of the Luggage, a living chest which follows Rincewind wherever he goes. It was a delight for us all to see these characters again, and we have grand plans to go back to their beginnings in the very first Discworld novels... In the meantime, when you've finished listening to this episode, get ready for the next one by reading Wyrd Sisters! We'll be recording on January 14th, so get your questions in ASAP if you'd like us to answer them on the podcast. Show Notes and Errata: Cal is still on Twitter at @calbo. Her new live stand-up show, Hindsight, will be playing in multiple cities at festivals throughout 2018: this page at comedy.com.au lists a bunch of them. (You can also see the poster she mentions; it really is good!)Freddie Mercury was a first son of a son of undetermined order, so his magical powers clearly came from somewhere else.Ben talks a lot about Dungeons & Dragons this episode; if you've no idea what it's all about, his article "What Even Is Dungeons & Dragons?" will get you up to speed. The Age interview with Terry featuring his thoughts on J K Rowling is still online here: "Mystery lord of the Discworld", Peter Fray, November 6, 2004.A person who doesn't realise they're no good at what they do might have a form of cognitive bias known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, named for a 1999 psychological study.Hook turns might not be widely used by cars outside of Melbourne, but they're a common way for bicycles to turn across traffic at cross intersections in many parts of the world. The Annotated Pratchett File (APF for short) is a brilliant source of information on the various references in the novels. We also recommend the Discworld & Terry Pratchett Wiki, also hosted by the L-Space Web.
In our second episode, writer and deputy culture editor for Guardian Australia Stephanie Convery joins us as we discuss the runner-up in our poll for which book to read first - Mort! Published 30 years ago, it's the fourth Discworld novel, and the first to put Death in a starring role. Mort (short for Mortimer), a daydreaming farmer's son, is offered an apprenticeship by Death himself. Travelling outside of space and time to Death's home, he finds things aren't what he expects: Death has an elderly manservant, an adopted daughter, and an unusual interest in fly fishing. Mort, left to do the job alone, tries to defy fate in a very human (and teenage) moment - but can he possibly succeed? And why does an immortal anthropomorphic personification need an apprentice, anyway? Mort is often cited (including by us) as the first book in the series that feels like the Discworld we know and love, so if you're joining us for the first time this episode, this is a great place to start. (And don't worry: we will go back and read the first three books at some point!) Show Notes and Errata: You can follow Stephanie on Twitter at @gingerandhoney, and find her work at Guardian Australia here.Sir Terry's thoughts on where to start reading the Discworld are most clearly outlined in the essay "Straight from the Heart, Via the Groin", which is most easily found in the collection A Slip of the Keyboard."Mort" does mean death, but it's not Latin - it's French (or in Discworld terms, Quirmian).A "squib" in the world of Harry Potter is the rare child of a magical person who is not magical themselves. The lead Gentleman in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode Hush was played by Doug Jones, now famous for playing Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth, and Saru in Star Trek Discovery. He plays Count Orlok, the titular vampire, in the upcoming remake of Nosferatu. And he'd make a great Death.Christopher Lee was the voice of Death in both Cosgrove Hall animated adaptations (Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music), and The Mob's live-action adaptation of The Colour of Magic, following Ian Richardson's death. And his Death. (Richardson played Death in The Mob's first Discworld adaptation, Hogfather.) The body of Death was played by Marnix Van Den Broeke, who also played the golem Mr Pump in Going Postal. The horse that plays Bucephalus in Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is, unfairly, not named in the credits of the film.
Radio Morpork is a podcast which discusses and analyses Terry Pratchett's Discworld one book at a time. Colm chats to Rose about her visit to the 2015 Irish Discworld Con before they dive headlong into an analysis of Wyrd Sisters. Their rambling discussion takes in the fluctuating size of Lancre, Pratchett’s use of ‘mad’ villains and the top 5 Discworld computer games they’d love to see made.

Arcturus is visible in the morning in this season, just follow the arc of the Big Dipper backward to the Really Bright Star. That’s Arcturus. Wave toward it and you’ll be greeting one of the Solar System’s favorite Trans Neptunian Objects. We used Haumeamancy to generate our predictions this week, so hold on for a stellar-fast ride! Octopodes 10+: “Dwarf planet, one-third the mass of Pluto”. this seems to indicate that you’re headed for a growth spurt. Alert your parents to fire up the crock pot and get yourself out there hiking, running, chopping wood, and carrying water. A growth spurt after about age 13 is all about putting down layers of muscle, so go do the things that your body is perfectly designed for! Get Strong, Stay Strong! Neon Tetras 20+: “Claims of discovery have been disputed and no discovery date or team is official.” My word. This week, Tetras, reinvent yourself! You’re not nailed down, you can rock the identity change. Here’s the thing. you discover yourself, decide what your major themes and minor motifs are then be yourself as hard as you can. thank you, Sir Terry Pratchett. Lions 25+: “Designated a dwarf planet and named after the Hawai’ian goddess of childbirth.” I don’t think it’s your height that could be growing. So, remembering that images of gestation and birth are about all kinds of creativity, it’s time to choose your next creative venture if you haven’t already, to block other creative ventures from happening if you take my meaning, to dedicate yourself to doing it the best you know how. That means swatch for your OWL, commit to writing 5K words/day then editing out 3K of them, or decide on some 25-year-plan goals. Fancy Goldfish 30+: “Its shape has not been directly observed, calculations from its light curve suggest it is an ellipsoid, with its major axis twice as long as its minor”. Well, I think this is clear - no one else can quite focus on you, use that air of mystery to your advantage, be a shapeshifter. Also, sort your Tasks into major and minor then give twice as much heart and love to the Things which are major. Narwals 40+: “Rapid rotation, high density, and high albedo.” OK, it’s going to be a heck of a week, Narwhals, full of high density and rapid rotation, but you will do really well at it and you’re gonna shine! Capybaras 50+: “Its gravity is sufficient for it to have relaxed into hydrostatic equilibrium.” Yeah. I’m with you, Sister Capybaras, a little extra gravity and a relaxed waistband are just about the price we’ve paid for the hydrostatic equilibrium. Would you care for a vodka martini while we wait for the children to grow up? Cougars 55+: “A surface of crystalline water ice”. Incoming diamond jewelry. Act surprised, but cool. Peacocks 60+: “the result of a giant collision, which left Haumea the largest member of a collisional family that includes several large TNOs and Neptune’s two known moons.” First, brace for family drama, and second if we are to be a bit less metaphorical, for the love of all that’s holy, buckle up. We care. Dragons 80+: Your mediation is requested, Ma’am. The Planetary Geologic Society is suing the International Astronomical Union for making decisions on sticking their noses into rock business instead of keeping with the burning gasses. I need some of that Frozen North action - She’s Natalya Arctica, I’m GazeboGal, and you’re listening to Radio Ravenclaw on the Wizarding Wireless Network! SECURITY ALERT! SECURITY ALERT! LEVEL ONE! ALL AGENTS! Printers have been identified as a level one threat! They sleep most of the time, but when they break dormancy the best way to subdue them is to swat quickly and repeatedly at any paper that comes out. Printers become loud and angry and begin eating paper. The paper is changed after the printer has eaten it, and can not be trusted. It is not known whether or not the paper itself is a threat, so jump on it! Then, immediately lay on the paper until you know it is safe. There seems to be a great deal of printer unrest this morning, so be very aware, and protect your humans from the dangers of printers! If you have acquired a pet or familiar since then, watch carefully for signs that this creature could be an Animagus trapped in her or his animal form! Signs include, but are not limited to: vivid dreaming (evidenced by sleep-woofing); hypervigilance; constructing sandwiches out of human food. Tower, we have another letter from ChrisFixedKitty in Lindisfarne. Chris? Dear Towermates, Hallo, everyone! My apologies for the delay in writing, but the regular postal owl convoy only comes to Lindisfarne once a week. Just as all the books about the history of medieval calligraphy say, this is a back-end-of-nowhere place, easier to reach by sea than by land, which is almost hard to tell from the sea much of the time, it’s so marshy. Yes, I said ‘postal owl convoy’, because lone owls are pretty much flying playtoys in the view of the younger dragons. No wonder poor Skrim was so raggedy when he brought me the directions here. The young ones do seem to understand that brooms sometimes bite back, so to speak, so flying in and out is pretty safe. Although there are a few dragons here that like to sniff all incoming visitors, in-flight, and say ‘hi’ at length. They really need to add a warning about that in the directions. Imagine a flying great Dane the size of a city bus jumping all round you and barking enthusiastic “hihihi!”as you enter a friend’s house. It’s like that, only include in your mental picture that said ginormous beastie has just barged straight up out of the treecover and nearly inhaled you and your broom and the airstream of its leap has flipped your broom over into barrel rolls. Yeah. I don’t care if Walter is “a graaaate beeg softie, he couldnae love people more, here, have a towel for tha’ slobber. No, he rrrreallllly likes ya!” A warning would have been nice. I have no regrets about having thrown up on him during said barrel rolls. Walter, I mean. I do feel bad about hurling on Mr. C. Be assured that we arrived perfectly safely, although 2 days later than we were expected. So we were met some distance out from camp by one of the search parties, and it probably saved me another day of trying to pinpoint the camp itself. Preep has made several new friends among the drakelings and the preserve workers, but she-- yes, Preep has been confirmed as a she-- is still insistently huddling around the humans’ ankles every night after dinner. What –do- you do with a dragonlet who is afraid of being away from people in the dark? It turns out the usual answer is giving them a week to get over it and putting some magical nightlights around the camp. We’re on day 5. No change yet, fingers crossed. During the day, she seems happy enough here, scampering off after breakfast to play with the other dragons, and I’ve been playing Muggle tourguide around the Lindisfarne ruins and museum. One of the regular tourguides has been taken ill with dragonpox, and I’m already pretty familiar with the history of the place and Muggle vacationing expectations, so I’m going to be filling in for a bit. There’s a lot around here that they really shouldn’t be noticing, so there’s always one behind-the-scene illusionist and one up-front tourguide for every group. It works out pretty well. Some of the illustrations in the museum are like magical portraits, and a few of the monks have senses of humor about the tourists that are positively not helpful to maintaining wizardly secrecy! I expect to return with Skrim guiding me back a few days before the start of term. I should arrive the day before classes start. See everyone again real soon! -CFK Thank you, ChrisFixedKitty. Rucksack Universe Author and Pratchett Enthusiast, Anthony St. Clair joins us to wrap up our reading of Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters. Is Granny Weatherwax a conduit for Pratchett's righteous anger? Does Tom live next to Nanny Ogg? All these mysteries and more revealed.
We give our last thoughts on The Goblin Emperor, kick of our April pick, Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett and discuss why some author names are bigger than their titles. But what really gets this episode going is the debate about whether a reader has the right to "clean up" an author's language.
