Terry Pratchett may still be pegged as a comic novelist, but . . . he's a lot more.” — Washington Post Book World Getting knocked back in time thirty years, Sam Vines, Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch experiences a day like no other in which past, present, and future collide with hilarious—and poignant—results in this rollicking Discworld adventure from Terry Pratchett. One moment Commander of the City Watch Sam Vimes is chasing a murderer across the rooftops of Ankh-Morpork. The next, he's lying in the street below, naked—and back in his own tough past thanks to a lightning strike and a group of meddling, time-manipulating monks. It's a dark Discworld that is all too familiar. Worse, the cop-killing psychopath he'd been pursuing has been transported back with him, and it's the eve of a deadly street rebellion that took a few good (and not so good) lives. Vimes is determined to do his duty— track down the murderer and change the outcome of the rebellion. By changing history he might just save some worthwhile necks, and steer a novice watchman straight—an impressionable young copper named Sam Vimes. But if he succeeds, Sam knows it could cost him the future—including the job and the family he loves. The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Night Watch is the sixth book in the City Watch series. The series includes: Guards! Guards! Dr Kat Day joins your hosts to talk about Night Watch by Terry Pratchett. They discuss where the novel fits into The City Watch subseries and Discworld as a whole. They somehow manage to agree to disagree about Carrot. There's conversation about anti heroes, lampshades, and sexy lamps (some more metaphorical than others). In this very special episode, Liz and Ben are joined by fellow Discworld podcasters Joanna Hagan and Francine Carrel on an existential journey deep into our very souls! Yes, it's part three of our Thud!-related trilogy, in which we discuss Where's My Cow? Every night at six o'clock, Sam Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, reads the picture book Where's My Cow? to his one-year-old son, Young Sam. But tonight, in between doing the barnyard noises, Vimes starts to question whether this is really the right story for a child of Ankh-Morpork. Released at the same time as Thud!, Where's My Cow? is a picture book based on a novel inspired by a board game. Lavishly illustrated by newcomer to the Discworld Melvyn Grant, it takes the couple of pages explaining the book - and the "Vimes street version" - and brings them vividly to life, along with wonderful new visions of some of our favourite Discworld characters. But is Young Sam cute, or in the uncanny valley? What's the deal with that flying book? What do you think the Discworld's answer to duct tape would be? Are are you, in some way, looking for your cow? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat62. Guests Joanna Hagan (chef, poet, playwright, author) and Francine Carrel (writer, editor) are the hosts of the Discworld podcast The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret, which is about to reach its 100th episode! Their format splits each novel up into three weekly episodes per month, and they're going through the Discworld books in mostly publication order, with side trips to Pratchett's non-Discworld work along the way. Find them wherever good podcasts are available, but also at their website, thetruthshallmakeyefret.com, and on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, TikTok and probably something else by the time you read this. If you like what they do, please consider supporting them on Patreon. You'll find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. As mentioned above and at the end of the episode, we've decided to cut ourselves some slack in the new year by extending the "Thud! trilogy" to four parts. In January we'll be welcoming back Matt Roden to discuss the Discworld short story "A Collegiate Casting-Out of Devilish Devices", featuring A. E. Pessimal and available in A Blink of the Screen. We'll also tackle some more of your brilliant Thud! questions! If you have questions about the short story, send them via social media with the hashtag #Pratchat63 or via email to chat@pratchatpodcast.com. Finally, if you want to catch The Amazing Maurice before the rest of the Australia, and you're in Adelaide, the Australian Discworld Convention's fundraiser screening is on Saturday, the 10th of December, at 3 PM at the Palace Nova Prospect. Get details and book your tickets here! (We won't be there, but do tell us if you go!)
Designer and educator Matt Roden delves deep under Ankh-Morpork with Liz and Ben as they unravel the mystery of the penultimate City Watch book, 2005's Thud!. As the anniversary of the Battle of Koom Valley approaches, the dwarfs and trolls of Ankh-Morpork find their ancient enmity stirred up - not least by Hamcrusher, a conservative leader of the "Deep Down" dwarfs, who has preached hatred against the trolls. But now Hamcrusher's dead - not that the other deep downers want the Watch to know about it - and Vimes must solve the puzzle of his murder before tensions explode across the city. On top of that, he's also been sent a government inspector, he's had to take on the Watch's first vampire, someone's stolen the most talked-about painting in town - and he has to get home at 6 o'clock sharp, every night, to read Where's My Cow? to his infant son... While most Watch books have a mystery that needs solving, none so far have felt as much like a contemporary thriller as Thud! There's an awful lot going on, with politics, religion, art and history all in the mix. Is it too much for one book? Are there threads that get dropped along the way? Is Pratchett having his cake and eating it too with his fantasy abstractions of real world issues? And who do you think should star in Discworld legal drama "The Good Dwarf"? Join in the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat61 on social media! Guest Matt Roden is a graphic designer, educator and the Creative Learning Manager for the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Matt has a long history with storytelling and education; he helped set up The Ministry of Stories in London, and was the first volunteer and a long-running Storyteller with Sydney's Story Factory. You can follow Matt on Instagram (where you can see photos of his dog) at @matthewrodeo. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. We apologise that this episode has gone out much later than planned. While our schedule has gotten a little out of whack, we'll still be continuing our "Thud! trilogy" next episode with our special crossover with sibling Pratchett podcast The Truth Shall Make Ye Fret. We'll be joined by Jo and Francine to discuss Where's My Cow?, the hottest children's book in Ankh-Morpork! Plus we have plans to extend our Thud! trilogy to four parts - details coming in our very next episode.

This episode starts off immediately where episode 8 left off...with the death of Viserys. Alicent, after being made aware by a servant, immediately notifies her father. She tells him, erroneously, that Viserys told her that Aegon should be king. Otto calls a small council meeting to give them the news and, to Alicent's and Lord Beesbury surprise, put his long laid plan in play to usurp Rhaenyra. Lord Beesbury was completely against this and while making claims of treason and murder, he himself was killed by Criston Cole. Otto plan is to remove any loyalists to Daemon from the City Watch and to murder Rhaenyra and her children, to which Alicent disagrees. While putting plans in place for Aegon, both Alicent and Otto dispatched their own people to go and find him. The twins eventually find him in Flea Bottom, only to have Criston and Eyemond take him instead. We saw Alicent try to convince an already imprisoned Rhaenys to join the Greens, only to be rebuffed. With the help of one of the twins, Rhaenys escapes captivity and during Aegon's coronation, she makes her way to the dragon pit to retrieve Meleys. She finally gives us the "beast beneath the boards" moment that we had been hearing about from Helaena. Having an opportunity to end them with one word, she instead flies away, presumably to Dragonstone to inform Rhaenyra of her father's death and the treachery going on. In between all of this there was plenty of backstabbing, murder, and the witnessing of a crazy fetish. So sit back, press play and enjoy as we talk our talk all about it.We wanna keep laughing and building with y'all so please Subscribe to WATCH DEM THRONES by Black With No ChaserYoutube: https://youtu.be/LjirbJX5ldEApple Music: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep1-the-heir-to-the-dragon-recap/id1641754247?i=1000577353881Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2eOsE7L3DTn4l1ObJCXhzh?si=lstDDAZLSCWdCULJcXu9Vg&utm_source=copy-linkAmazon Music https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/45279c3a-c09f-47d1-a3a3-88e6e2507230/watch-dem-thrones-by-black-with-no-chaserIHeartRadio https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-watch-dem-thrones-by-black-101286659/?cmp=android_share&sc=android_social_share&pr=false#houseofthedragon #watchdemthrones #gameofthrones #hbomax #dragons #demthrones #jokes #whogotthebody #explorepage #funny #podcast #podsincolor #blackpodcast #demdragons

James and Ender discuss the 2nd episode of HBO's new Original Series House of the Dragon. Show Overview: Six months after Rhaenyra is named the heir, Daemon illegally occupies Dragonstone, supported by loyal City Watch guards. Meanwhile, Prince-Admiral Craghas Drahar, known as the Crab Feeder, menaces the Stepstones at the Triarchy's behest. Rhaenyra's suggestion to show force against Daemon is dismissed, and she is instead relegated to appointing a new Kingsguard knight. Ignoring others' advice, she chooses Ser Criston, the only knight with actual battle experience. Ser Otto's daughter, Lady Alicent, has been privately consoling Viserys since his wife's death; she urges him and Rhaenyra to discuss Queen Aemma and his kingly duty to remarry. Lord Corlys and his consort, Rhaenys, propose that Viserys unite their Valyrian houses through marriage with their twelve-year-old daughter, Laena Velaryon. The Small Council learns Daemon stole a dragon egg and intends to marry his mistress Mysaria as a second spouse. Ser Otto and a small detachment sail to Dragonstone to retrieve the egg. Rhaenyra follows on her dragon, Syrax, and forces Daemon to renounce his false claims and return the egg to her. Viserys announces he will wed Lady Alicent, angering Lord Corlys, who then seeks out Daemon to propose an alliance. Show Episode Director: Greg Yaitanes Show Episode Writer: Ryan Condal
James and Ender discuss the pilot episode The Heirs of the Dragon HBO's new Original series House of the Dragon. Overview: With both his sons dead and the succession undecided, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen convenes a Great Council for the Westerosi lords to select a future ruler. Jaehaerys' eldest grandson, Prince Viserys, is chosen over his eldest grandchild, Princess Rhaenys. Nine years into his reign, Viserys organizes a tournament to celebrate Queen Aemma Arryn's pregnancy, confident she will give birth to a male heir. The Small Council disregards Master of Ships Lord Corlys Velaryon's warning that the Triarchy, an alliance of Essos' Free Cities, threatens to cripple Westerosi shipping lanes. Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower, criticizes Viserys's brother and heir, Prince Daemon, for his brutality as the City Watch commander. At the tournament, Ser Criston Cole, a common-born Dornish knight, outcompetes Daemon, while Aemma dies in childbirth, her son, Baelon, dying shortly after. Viserys refuses the council's pleas to anoint a new heir until Ser Otto reveals that Daemon mockingly styled Baelon as, "The Heir for a Day." Outraged, Viserys banishes Daemon from King's Landing and anoints his only living child, Princess Rhaenyra, heir to the Iron Throne. Episode Director: Miguel Sapochnik Episode Writter: Ryan Condal

Fire Will Reign Emotional Fantasy Music - Ice & Fire by Solas. House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series that is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019), both based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R. R. Martin. The prequel series was created by Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO and is based on portions of Fire & Blood. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are showrunners for House of the Dragon. Set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons". Season One, Episode One: The Heirs of the Dragon: In the last years of the reign of Jaehaerys Targaryen, the Old King, tragedies took the lives of his two eldest sons, Princes Aemon and Baelon, leaving the question of succession open. Faced with this situation, the king convened a Great Council where all the lords of Westeros would choose their future ruler. Two of Jaehaerys' grandchildren were candidates for succession, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon, the richest man at the time, and Prince Viserys Targaryen, Rhaenys' younger cousin and husband of Lady Aemma Arryn. By Westerosi law, a male descendant always comes ahead of a female descendant, causing Rhaenys to lose even though she was the oldest descendant of the king. Nine years later, King Viserys I reigns under the threat of the Triarchy, an alliance made by the free cities of Essos to obtain the region of Stepstones. In addition, Viserys has to deal with his brother Daemon Targaryen's misbehavior for practicing brutality against criminals in King's Landing in command of the City Watch. Queen Aemma dies during childbirth along with her newborn son, who would be Viserys' heir. The Queen's death occurred during the tournament held for the Prince's birth, where Ser Criston Cole defeated Daemon. The Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower, suggests that Viserys name his only living child, the young princess Rhaenyra, as heir to the Iron Throne instead of Daemon. After a falling out with Daemon, Viserys officially names his daughter Rhaenyra the Princess of Dragonstone and has several lords swear allegiance to her. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Trousers of Time end up in a knot as writer Nadia Bailey rejoins Liz and Ben and we go back to the Glorious Past in the twenty-ninth Discworld novel, 2002's Night Watch. While pursuing dangerous killer Carcer across the rooftop of Unseen University, a magical bolt of lightning (or something) sends Sir Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch and Duke of Ankh, thirty years into the past - along with his quarry. Carcer kills Vimes' old mentor, Sergeant John Keel, and Vimes steps into Keel's thinly-soled shoes; he'll have to show himself the ropes to keep history intact. But he's not just reliving any old past: it's almost the Glorious 25th of May. The day the people deposed the paranoid Patrician Lord Winder; the day hundreds were killed in violent clashes across the city; and the day John Keel died... Night Watch is beloved by Discworld fans, no least because it gives a double dose of everyone's favourite "honest copper", Sam Vimes. But he leaves Sybil in labour as he's thrust back intp the best and worst days of his early career, forced to grapple with the darkness in his and others' souls with only the technobabble of a few time boffin monks for guidance. It's possibly Pratchett's darkest book, and certainly takes us into one of the darkest corners of the Discworld: Ankh-Morpork before the rise of Vetinari and the Guilds. Does Vimes knows where to draw the line in this book? Is Carcer an intriguing villain, or a cookie cutter evil psychopath? Could you teach your younger self everything you needed to know to become you? And is this book in your top five, or do you fail to see what all the fuss is about? Join the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat54 on social media. Guest Nadia Bailey is a writer, editor and critic. She's published a number of pop-culture related books about such diverse subjects as Stranger Things, Frida Kahlo and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her latest publication is The Deck of Crystals, a deck of cards which looks into the history, superstition and lore of gemstones. Nadia has just begun a PhD researching (among other things) the lives of queer women during World War I. You can find Nadia on Twitter as @animalorchestra, or visit her website at nadiabailey.com. Remember that we have two contests going on: The Portal Poetry Contest, and the Name That Show Contest. Deadline for entries for each contest is NEXT FRIDAY, August 20th. The Poetry Contest is your chance to get creative, and to maybe win a custom episode of the Portal just for you. Send you poems to me at randy@mindkindle.net, and I will read them on the show (unless you'd rather I didn't). I'll also select three winners from among the entries, and those three winners will each receive their own custom episode. You aren't limited to one poem—send is as many as you'd like. The Name the Show Contest also has a deadline of September 20th, and as with the Haiku Contest you can send in as many name suggestions as you want. My decision as to the winner will be final, and alas! the winner will have to sign a legal thingie transferring rights to the name to Medieval Gnome Productions. The goal is simple: to come up with a new name for the show which is more likely to attract Terry Pratchett/Discworld fans and readers. The name does not have to include the word portal. Check the names of other Discworld-related podcasts if you need some inspiration. The winner of this contest will be announced on October 1st (the last episode for season 10.) The prize for this contest is a copy of the brand-new book, The Ankh-Morpork Archives. The book won't be published until August 10th, but I have pre-ordered a copy for our lucky contest winner. So tell me, what should the new name for this show be? And, PLEASE send me some new questions for Granny! You can ask her anything. You can send your emails to me at randy@mindkindle.net.You're also invited to come join our Discord community, Friends of Medieval Gnome Productions! The appearance of such websites as DramaCool.City is no stranger to computer users. So if you can't access DramaCool, don't worry. There are several equivalent sites out there that help to download content, occasionally not in https://dramacool.city/.Moviezwap: was established a few years ago and supplied a range of hot entertainment products. It quickly gained popularity and became one of the most top-rated free movie download websites.Downloadhub: is another alternative of DramaCool, which was officially put into operation. This website is full of renowned movies in the Hollywood and Bollywood sectors, which is similar to those websites above. The site is uncomplicated to connect and download, but it is illegitimate; thus, don't surprise if it is banned in your country.
Sam Vimes didn't like the idea, because he doesn't like non-humans. He doesn't like humans either, though, so that's ok. If you have thoughts about Pratchips, please shoot me an email at randy@mindkindle.net. I'd love to hear from you; I will answer you; and if you are a first-time emailer I'll include a recording of the Clacks episode with my reply. That's the only way you can get a copy of the Clacks episode, short of using a second email addy and a fake name! The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion wines, dines, and has his way with Lord Janos Slynt. He appoints a new head of the City Watch and rounds out his evening by verbally sparring with Lord Varys. Mackelly and Simon consider Tyrion's power moves and prospects. Chapter Review: Tyrion plies Janos Slynt, the new Lord of Harrenhal, with wine over a lavish dinner. The commander of the City Watch is quite drunk by the time Tyrion turns the tables and announces Slynt's new career as a member of the Night's Watch. The new head of the Gold Cloaks, Jacelyn Bywater, has his former boss escorted to a waiting ship and onward to the Wall. Lord Varys admires Tyrion's stratagems but the Hand is annoyed that the all-knowing Spider failed to protect baby Barra and her mother from murder at the hand of Slynt's brutal henchmen. Varys apologizes, but claims he did get Gendry out of the city when he saw what Cersei had planned for Robert's progeny. The men discuss Cersei's cruelty and the riddle of where power truly resides. After Varys departs, Bronn confirms that he's recruiting worthy new men to Tyrion's service, and with the Gold Cloak's now led by Tyrion's man Bywater, his position in King's Landing should be secure. Steve & Colm discuss Vimes' final outing, as the Commander of the City Watch takes a jaunt to the country with his family. They discuss the risk of homogenisation during cultural integration, parse the plot to unpick its uneven attempts at narrative tension, and try to remember who was supposed to eat who in Swift's 'A Modest Proposal.'

We return to the rank (no file, yet) of the elite guardians of the evening, the City Watch (night). Per Vetinari's orders, they are taking on additional recruits to diversify the face of the modern watch, including a troll (Detritus, previously appearing in Moving Pictures), a dwarf (Cuddy), and a w... (Angua--if you know, you know). In a meditation on firearms, the role and purpose of police in a modern society, and what it really means to be a man (or w...) of the city, Terry takes us over towers and under sewers in a fast paced chase for the truth. In Vaes Dothrak, Drogo swears to Dany that he will get vengeance Westeros for the attack on her life, and back in King's Landing, Robert's death allows Cersei to put Joffrey on the throne and turn the City Watch against Ned Stark, who is betrayed by Littlefinger.
