In recent years, coaching has taken on an entirely new lexicon thanks to research into coaching methods and approaches. Richard and Dean examine some of the key ones pertaining to hockey, ones they feel are essential for the modern coach to not only be aware of but also employ. These include: constraints (as in the Constraints Led Approach), ecological dynamics, TGfU, skill vs. technique, observation, variability, and small area games (aka. small sided games). Why do so many PE programs adopt the game TGfU categories as the dominant way that games and sports are delivered? Is this the most effective method to engage our students and help them become physically active for life? Buon ascolto.

Professor Shane Pill from Flinders University in South Australia is one of the leading experts and researchers in coaching and sports education. He was recently awarded the Presidents Award by the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation for distinguished service to the profession. Shane discusses his transition from a physical education teacher in the 1980's to his role researching coaching pedagogies and specifically the game sense approach to coaching and teaching sport. He discusses the differences between pedagogical models of teaching skills through games and highlights the requirement for struggle to promote growth and development. Shane is a wealth of knowledge in this area and his explanations will hopefully go towards coaches being able to apply some of the methods he discusses to build more resilient and skillful athletes. Take away's from this episode are:1.That Kids and athletes play sports to play the game – the best way to prepare them for playing is by actually playing the game not by using one dimensional training drills that require little or no decision making. 2.A games based approach has to be purposeful and provide meaningful learning opportunities. 3.Athletes require some amount of struggle to learn and develop, but there has to be a struggle point – too hard and we lose the athletes, too easy and the learning process is not effective. This podcast is Part 1 of 2.
This episode is something a little different. Rather than interviewing a leader in the PhysEd world, Nathan shares his knowledge on Teaching Games for Understanding. This is the first in our PhysEdcast Learn series where we will break down topics and provide listeners with some professional learning on the go. In this episode, Nathan will cover What TGfU is, how to implement it and where to find resources to help you on your TGfU journey.
Buon divertimento!
Buon ascolto

I was really excited to talk to Jack from The Coaching Lab (https://www.thecoachinglab.org/) about his Matchplay cards! These cards give special powers or tasks to individuals or teams playing games in your PE program. They can be passed out secretly to players to give them new missions and levels to attain. There are also reflection cards that get students thinking deeper about the games they play. I absolutely love these cards and I know it will boost my questions and the understanding of my students. Dr Don Vinson is a researcher and lecturer at Worcester University in England. He is also a practising coach who is working with the U16 England national girls hockey team and a damn fine bloke!! I dropped by to Don's office as i happened to be in his neck of the woods and was fortunate enough to find out that he had a free space open up in his diary and could spend some time with me talking about our combined passions...helping young people be the best versions of themselves, helping coaches to be better, researching and understanding the theories behind what makes us who we are and coach the way we coach. We really get into the weeds in this one but come up for air now and again to bring the ideas to life from a practical perspective. Hope you enjoy!!
